Two children, a boy and a girl, each nine years old, sat naked under a fig tree, looking over a skirt with a broken zipper, an ice cream scooper with a defective mechanism, and one more item which commanded their immediate attention.
Paula Akron was excited as she examined this new treasure her boyfriend, Paul Macon, had brought her from the recycle bin. It was like a small magazine, with tears and loose pages. In fact, one or two pages were missing altogether. Still, it had a full-color drawing of a naked girl on the cover, a girl standing on a sidewalk with fully-clothed high school girls around, and some boy. Inside it was black and white and the girl appeared to be going to school naked.
“They look like anime people,” Paula noted.
“I know what this is!” Paul shouted. “This is a manga!”
“Manga?” Paula didn’t know the word.
“A manga,” the little boy told her, “is a Japanese comic book.”
That made sense. The Japanese language would have a word for “comic book,” and this certainly seemed to have that Japanese art look.
“This one’s been translated,” the little girl noted. “I’m glad you found it, even if it is falling apart.”
Though it took a little while to realize that they should read the manga from back to front, and panels from right to left, thanks to some instruction just inside the cover they did figure that out and began again. They hadn’t read more than a couple of pages (in the proper order) when Paul had an objection.
“Some big-boob girl going to school naked is a fun idea,” the boy pointed out, “but really, how come she’s not in trouble? I mean, wouldn’t you get kicked out of school for that?”
“It isn’t just some special ‘you can be naked’ school,” Paula noted. “Nobody else is naked, and the boy telling the story sure thinks it’s weird.”
“But nobody else does,” Paul added. “Everybody else is acting like she’s got her clothes on.”
“Turn the page.”
The next page was missing, which the children didn’t realize until they had read two more. A bit of leafing through the loose pages Paul had found allowed them to reconstruct the story at this point.
“So...” Paula scratched her head. “So she’s not really naked, but he’s got X-ray vision or something? But ... I don’t know, Paul.”
“If he has X-Ray vision,” the nine year old boy wondered, “wouldn’t he be looking at lots of girls? I mean, she’s the one he likes best, but he’d still take a little peek at the other girls.”
“If YOU had X-ray vision,” Paula giggled, “you’d probably go to Waikiki Beach and look right through all the bikinis!”
Paul shook his head.

Paula lightly pressed her fists to her bare chest and began walking around, moving her fists to simulate the bounce of hefty adult breasts. Her boyfriend laughed out loud. But then he hugged her.
“No matter how big they get, I’ll still love you.” He gave her a little kiss. “Hell, I’ll love you if you never grow any boobs at all.”

The next kiss was a lot longer, but then the kids returned to the manga. Though a couple of pages were missing altogether, and another was missing half, they were able to follow the story in general. The sex scene in the nurse’s office was something they especially liked, and they thought that the solution to the mystery of the naked schoolgirl was pretty cool: it turned out it was the girl who had a superpower. When she falls in love with a boy, her clothes turn invisible for him, though everybody else still sees her in her school uniform. Only thing was, the girl didn’t know she had this power, and the manga ended with the boy wondering how he was going to tell her about it.
Paula thought this was a wonderful superpower. After all, if you like a boy you want to get his attention, and showing up to class starkers would certainly get his attention. Best part was that you wouldn’t get into trouble for not being properly dressed.
Paul wondered if the girl would be embarrassed when she found out, but Paula said no, because she’d already taken her clothes off in front of the boy, and they had made love already, so there was nothing for her to be embarrassed about. Paul couldn’t really argue with his girlfriend’s logic, yet he still thought it might be embarrassing, somehow. He wasn’t going to make a fuss about it, though; not when they could look at and read the sex scene again.

Despite not having any electronics, any television, and very little in the way of reading material (they had as of yet not found another manga in the wealthy man’s recycle bin), Paul Macon and Paula Akron were seldom bored. They played, swam, made love and explored the woods. Sometimes they spied on the adults who also played and swam, only these adults did so in areas the children dared not visit, such as the pool and the various lanai (balconies).
Often, the adults were nude, as they preferred skinny-dipping to swimming in swimwear. Men, women, teenage girls, and once a boy of about fifteen or so: all nude when in the pool. There were kisses, and hugs, and there just HAD to be sex, but never sex where the kids could see it. The lack of observable sex was much on Paula’s mind this morning as they walked into Honolulu.
“You don’t think they know we’re there, do you?” she asked her boyfriend. “That’s why they won’t fuck where we can see them? No, that doesn’t make any sense; they wouldn’t run around with their dicks hanging out if they knew we were there.”

The kids were hoping to find things dropped by tourists, and it didn’t take long: a Kansas driver’s license here, a GoPro camera over there, a couple of five dollar bills nowhere near each other, a twenty under their (second) favorite banyan tree (the one near the zoo), some quarters and a dime lying together on the sidewalk. They also found a ripped bag with a dozen frosted donuts, but the donuts were covered in sand. Even without the sand, the presence of ants was enough to discourage the children.
They set the license and GoPro in front of the door to the little police station at the beach, and hoped that would be enough. For obvious reasons they did not seek out the attention of any actual police officers. The money they kept, the donut bag they threw away and the donuts themselves they left to the ants. There: they had done their part for the environment.
It was now noon and the child-couple spent one of the fives and all of the loose change on a small meal they split between them. They still had some of the eighty-seven dollars Paula had taken from Genkins, about fifty bucks, and what they had found today replaced most of what they’d spent out of that. Of course now they’d blown a chunk of their new cash, but in truth they didn’t need much money. A city of over a third of a million people, on an island of nearly a million, with a tourist influx of five million or more each year, produced plenty for two nine-year-olds to live on, especially considering the fruit, coconuts, and fresh water they had at home. Home, they didn’t quite realize yet, was how they had already started thinking of PLUR-MAkKikM.
