"You did it you smooth talking Yankee son-of-a-bitch. You nailed her didn't you?" Sam Harding chortled as his friend and fellow attorney, James Austin, sat down at the smalltable in the noisy club.
Austin scanned the crowded bar before answering the question with a brief nod. His eyes locked with those of a striking brunette standing alone at the bar. In fact Jim rarely dated a girl more than three or four times. When Sam had suggested that Jim join him working in the Harding family's large law practice in San Antonio rather than return to the small practice that awaited him in Vermont, he had been quick to opt for the State of Texas. His father had been extremely disappointed, expecting his son to ultimately take over his practice, particularly since he had paid all of Jim's college expenses.
Jim's response had been curt. "No way am I going to freeze my ass off in the boondocks of Vermont, trying to make a living out of settling boundary disputes, water rights and the other two-bit shit you handle. I'll make more in one year working for the Hardings than I would in ten working with you."
And that's how it had been. He had adapted to the Texas life style likes a duck to water. In a state where beautiful women abound, he had continued his hit and run tactics, scoring almost weekly and providing Sam with even more dazzling tales of wild sex. Sometimes he worried about Sam, telling him to get a life of his own, to find some willing young thing who would make him stops relying on Jim for his sexual kicks, albeit second hand ones.
It was to this end that he had suggested that they meet at Mad Michael's, a Tex-Mex style bar popular with San Antonio's young professional crowd. After working closely together for several days, Sue Anne had finally talked a little about herself. She was married to a part-time rodeo cowboy named Billy-Bob or Joe-Bob, one of those double-barreled names of which Texans are so fond. No children yet. All though she spoke of Joe-Bob in glowing terms, Jim got the impression that the couple were dependent on Sue Anne's salary for survival.
Preparing the paperwork for the development was straight-forward, but time consuming. Consequently Jim had kept Sue Ann working late several evenings during the last month. Sam had immediately accused him of trying to get something going with her.
Jim had been adamant. "Look Sammy boy, you know how I feel about married women. They're trouble from the git-go especially one with a husband named Bubba-Bubba or what ever the hell it is. Thanks, but no thanks. Besides you know I don't believe in screwing women I have to work with."
But Sam had refused to believe him. "I know you, you're just like Grampa Harding's old herd bull. Every time one of the cows come into heat, he's right there to cover her. The rest of the time he doesn't want anything to do with them."
Jim had laughed at the comparison. So Sam thought he was like an old bull. Well maybe he was. Screw them and then move on to the next. "If I believed in re-incarnation, maybe I'll come back as a big old bull with a whole herd of cows just for my pleasure." he had told Sam.
Jim had kept Sue Anne late every evening earlier that week. On Monday and Tuesday she had seemed to be willing to put in the extra hours, but on Wednesday when he asked her to stay late again, she had seemed reluctant. "I really need to spend more time with Joe-Bob," she had said. "He's home alone all week and he gets lonesome." But Jim had been insistent so she had stayed.
Thursday morning when she came in to work, Sue Anne seemed distracted. She was even more quiet than usual. Finally, just before quitting time, he called her into his office and closed the door.
He handed her several sheets of paper, a deed which she had just prepared and in which he had found a number of mistakes. "Ok Sue Anne, what's the problem? It isn't like you to screw up so I know something is wrong."
To his surprise she burst into tears. "Oh Jim" she sobbed, "It's just that Joe-Bob wants me to quit my job here and I don't want to. Besides I have to work since he doesn't bring in much money."
"But why does he want you to quit?" Jim asked, baffled. "Well maybe it's my fault. I told him how nice you were to work for, how you always were real concerned about how things were going for me and all. He got real jealous and he says I can't work late with you any more. In fact he wants me to try to find another job right away and you know how hard it is to find a job if you quit for no real good reason." She hic-cupped.
"Shit!" Jim thought. "Maybe I'll have to be more careful about how I talk to the women around here." He didn't have any designs on Sue Anne or any of the other women at the office for that matter, it was just that he couldn't seem to talk with any female with out naturally being seductive.
He stepped around the desk and put his arm around Sue Anne's shoulders as he handed her his handkerchief. "Look, if I don't keep you after hours for the next few nights, maybe Joe Bob will get over being so jealous. That way you won't have to quit your job. And tell him I yelled at you for the mistakes you made."
Sue Anne looked up at him, her deep blue eyes shining with tears. Without thinking he bent his head and kissed her gently. She whimpered and snuggled close to him, her lips parting and her tongue searching for his.

The following morning, shortly after Jim had arrived at work, Sue Anne stepped into his office, a steaming cup of coffee in her hand. "I brought you some coffee Jim, but what I really came to tell you was that what happened last night was something very special for me. Joe Bob's the only one I ever had sex with before this. He certainly never made me feel like you did. I talked to my friend, Laura, last night and she said that it should be that way all the time but most men just don't think about how a woman feels. She said I was really lucky to have someone like you make love to me."
"Great" Jim thought. "Now she'll be recommending me to all her friends. All I need right now is to have it get around that I'm banging a married woman here at work."
"Look Sue Ann, I know that you have all kinds of warm feelings for me right now and, to be truthful, I have to admit that last night was pretty wonderful for me too." Jim's mind raced as he tried to figure what he could do to dampen Sue Anne's fires with out angering her to the point where she might bitch to one of the senior partners of the firm. "The best thing to do is to string her along for a little while until I can let her down real gently. Maybe I can even convince Sam to get his father to let her go." he thought. "Actually I wouldn't mind going a couple of more rounds with her before ending it. If I'm careful no one will ever get wise.
"We have to be very careful." he said to her, echoing his thoughts aloud. " We could get in a lot of trouble if we get caught. We could both loose our jobs and you are married after all. I really don't want to be named in a divorce action."
Sue Anne laughed delightedly. "Don't worry about Joe- Bob suing for divorce. He wouldn't want to loose his meal ticket. Besides he likes to show me off to all his dumb cowboy friends when we go out." In a more sober tone she added "I'm just another one of his trophies."
She turned and started out the door, then paused and turned back into the office. Extending a shapely leg she said "Look. No panty hose, it will make things easier later. Think about that!"
When she had left, Jim picked up the coffee she had brought him and sat back, slowly sipping it, his mind in a turmoil. Usually he was the one in control, but somehow Sue Anne seemed to have taken charge. He had better end this and quickly. With that thought in mind, he lifted the phone and dialed Sam's extension.
"Roomy" he said when Sam picked up. "Lets you and me get together tonight. We have to see about getting you a girlfriend or three or four so that you can tell me about all your scores for a change. Besides I need to talk to you about something else. I'll meet you at Mad Michael's about six.
Sam readily agreed, surprised at the unexpected offer of Jim's help in meeting women. He had often hinted that he could use some help from Jim when it came to meeting willing females, but had always been rebuffed in the past. Jim had always said that he wouldn't be a pimp for anyone, not even his best friend.
