"This is Jeff," Devlin said. "Jeff, this is Kriss."
"Pleased to meet you," Krissi said. She turned to face Devlin. "Sorry to interrupt, but I was thinking about what you said last week."
"Oh?"

"Not until later this afternoon. Where were you headed?"
"I'm meeting somebody. We're supposed to meet in a place right across the street from campus. I should warn you, she's a cop."
"So? I've done nothing wrong, well, unless you consider violating some of the hoarier rules of grammar to be illegal."

Denise O'Connor was waiting for her in a small coffee shop right next to campus. After a round of introductions she led them to a table next to the front windows.
