May, 1984, Chicago, Illinois

On Wednesday at work, Scott handed me a 9-track tape and a manual. My new task was to upgrade the Plexus Unix systems to the latest version of System III Unix. It took most of the day to upgrade both computers and to verify that the Universe database system as well as the Ethernet connections were working. At the end of the day, Scott told me that he had a new project for me - optimizing some Z80 assembly code for an embedded controller. I took a quick look at the documentation and looked over the code for about five minutes, but then it was time to go.

I arrived home only a few minutes before Jackie walked into the house. She came to the kitchen, gave me a quick, chaste kiss, and asked what she could do to help. I gave her a few tasks that she completed quickly, and then asked her to set the table in the breakfast nook, since it was just the two of us. She’d just finished when I had the food ready, and she helped me bring it to the table. I opened a bottle of wine and poured some for each of us.

“Now I have to spend the night, if I follow your drinking rule,” she declared with a smile.

“Rats! My evil machinations to get you into bed tonight have been found out!” I said, cackling maniacally.

“As if you needed any such evil machinations! But seriously, I agree with your drinking rules. Is it OK if I stay over? I still have stuff here to change into in the morning.”

“Sure. Now, drink your wine and get drunk so I can take advantage of you later!” I chuckled.

“What about your darling Penny?” she smirked.

“Oh, her? Well, you know me!” I smirked.

“Riiiiiight! I heard you last night. I know better. Now, let’s eat before she shows up.”

We ate our dinner, carrying on a light conversation about the upcoming presidential election which looked to me like it was going to be a blowout. Neither Gary Hart nor Walter Mondale seemed likely to be able to beat Reagan, and Jessie Jackson certainly was no threat. Although the contest between Hart and Mondale was far from over, I felt that Mondale had effectively scored a knockout blow with his Where’s the Beef? challenge to Hart. It was a riff on the Wendy’s commercial and mocked Hart for mouthing empty platitudes about ‘New Ideas’. Jackie agreed with my assessment that Reagan was going to mop the floor with whichever candidate won the Democratic nomination.

When we finished eating, we quickly cleaned up and had just sat down with tea when Penny and Alice arrived. Penny had an annoyed look until she saw Jackie, and then broke into a big smile.

“Mom, Jackie is here, so you can go home!” Penny said happily.

Alice laughed, “Jackie, are you going to be here the entire time?”

“Yes I will. In fact, I’m staying the night. Even though I’m living at home for the summer and I’m moving out in August, I still have most of my stuff here.”

“Moving out?” Alice asked.

“I’m moving in with my boyfriend. He just graduated from law school. I have one more year in the Architecture program. But don’t worry, the rest of the girls are coming back, along with a friend of Steve’s from Sweden and a friend of his from his hometown. There will be someone to watch over Penny in the fall.”

“OK. Be home at 9:00pm, Penny. You still have school for a couple more weeks.”

“Yes, Mom,” she said in the standard teenager’s voice when told to do something that they didn’t want to do.

“Thanks, Alice,” I said.

“You’re welcome. And thanks, Jackie.”

Jackie walked her to the door while I went into the great room with Penny. Jackie was back a few seconds later.

“Does this mean we can go upstairs?” Penny asked hopefully.

“How about we talk for a bit, Penny,” Jackie said.

“Can we talk AFTER Steve makes love to me?” she begged. “Please?”

Jackie smiled and nodded and I led Penny up to my room. About an hour later we were back in the great room where Jackie had waited for us. She took Penny’s hand and they went to the kitchen to get soft drinks and some of the cookies that were leftover, and then went into the ‘Indian’ room and shut the door. I wondered what Jackie was talking with her about, but I was sure that I’d find out later.

I went to my office to play Ultima III, which I’d yet to finish. I felt I was getting close to the end, and thought I might have enough time to finish it before Jennifer arrived, because there wasn’t much to do around the house and most of my friends were elsewhere for the summer. When I heard the girls’ voices, I looked over at the clock to see that it was a couple of minutes before 9:00pm.

Penny came into the office to give me a kiss and said that she’d see me on Saturday. I walked her to the front door and when she was safely inside her house, I went back to find Jackie waiting for me in the kitchen.

“Could you handle a sauna with me?” she smirked.

“If I could do it with Kara, I can do it with you,” I grinned.

“Asshole!” she said with a laugh.

We went down to the sauna, undressed and went in. When the stones came up to proper temperature, I ladled water onto them to make steam. I sat quietly and waited for Jackie to speak. It was silent except for the hiss of the steam for about ten minutes.

“I have a suggestion for you,” Jackie said.

“Which is?”

“Well, the short version is more talking, less fucking.”

“You mean with Penny?” I asked.

“Yes. How old are you?”

“Twenty-one.”

“And how old is Penny?”

“Fifteen. But you know both of those things.”

“Yes. I’m just making sure that you remember. She’s an impressionable young girl. And she’s in way over her head if you’re being honest with me about your feelings for her. She’s dealing with stuff a girl my age, twenty-two, would have trouble dealing with. Already you’ve had one big blowup because you didn’t think things through. There will very likely be more. Remember when you were fifteen?”

“I do,” I said with a grin. “I was even more clueless than I am now!”

“Don’t get cute on me. That’s not what this is about. Is Penny really ready for the kind of heavy relationship you’re moving towards? Are you? Think about what you said that you told Doctor Alborg. Don’t answer yet, though. Penny is in the ‘I love fucking’ stage. You’ve tried to move her to a place she isn’t ready to go - the ‘I only want to make love to you for the rest of my life’ stage. I wonder, though - are YOU really ready for that stage? And if you are, is it with Penny? Because if you keep going, she’s going to assume it’s true. She’s an innocent, inexperienced young girl being buried in an avalanche of tremendous orgasms, and she’s equating that with love. That’s a recipe for disaster.”

“I thought you were OK with this,” I said, defensively.

“I was when I thought you two were just going to fuck each other silly for a while. It’s one thing for a girl like Penny to come to an older guy to be taught what sex is about. It’s a completely different thing to be in a serious relationship where words like love, lovemaking, and marriage are tossed about. Hell, I have a problem with my relationship with you, Steve! Remember when I told you that I love you?”

“I do. It’s kind of hard to forget something like that.”

“I’m seven years older than Penny is!” Jackie exclaimed. “And I get confused by it. You’re the problem, do you know that?”

“I’m sure I am, but I think I need you to explain what it is THIS time,” I said with a wry smile.

“When you have sex with someone, you pour your heart and soul into it. I don’t think you’ve ever fucked in your entire life. Ever. Even that night last year at the end of the school year wasn’t really fucking. You devoted every fiber of your being to me, to my pleasure, and to making sure I felt loved. You want to know how bad it is? I think you sticking your dick in my ass was one of the most loving things anyone has ever done to me! And I didn’t particularly like it! How’s that for being messed up and conflicted? Now, think about how Penny feels.”

“What are you telling me? You’ve always been practical and good at giving me the bottom line. Better even than Bethany or Anala.”

“Wow. That’s a huge compliment coming from you. I’m telling you to slow down. Talk with Penny. You have so much baggage that she has no clue about. She doesn’t need to know all of it, but she needs to know some. The problem is, she’s young and might not be able to deal with some of the adult stuff that you’ve had to deal with since you were fourteen. Look how it messed you up. This is what, your third round of counseling? Do you want Penny to go through years of therapy because you made her grow up way too fast?”

“Do you know that I hate you?” I sighed.

“You don’t. You love me. But not like you love Bethany or Jennifer, or even Penny. And that’s fine. You have a tremendous capacity to love. We all see that. That’s why Katy was willing to make love with you. She knows that you love her and she loves you. Heck, if you do go monogamous, she’s going to make a huge play for you. I hadn’t even figured her into the mix. We may have to have some sort of tribunal to decide who gets you! The number of girls who would throw their hats into the ring, so to speak, seems endless!”

“Including you,” I said.

“Including me. But that’s not the topic for this discussion. It’s your relationship with Penny. I wonder if your view is colored by the fact that she seems to have made you forget about Becky.”

“No, it’s deeper than that. I’m sure of it. My question for you, Jackie, is how to reconcile two things you’ve told me. One is to slow down with Penny and the other is that if I stop having sex with her it would hurt her badly.”

“Welcome to life, Steve! You must have run into situations where there’s no clear course of action and you have to feel your way between two less than desirable options.”

“Another fucking minefield,” I said.

“So? That’s adult life. You yourself said that you didn’t know how to have a good relationship. Do you think anyone does? Do you expect Doctor Alborg to give you some magic formula? Did Doctor Mercer?”

“No,” I chuckled. “All she did was ask lots of questions and make me think. Sure, she nudged my thinking, but in the end, my dad paid her to listen to me talk!”

“But it worked, didn’t it? Helping you get past things that were impediments to a happy future?”

“Of course. I wouldn’t be seeing Doctor Alborg if I didn’t think it would help. I wouldn’t have sent Kara to Doctor Mercer if I didn’t think it would help.”

“I noticed something in your journal, at least as far as I read it. You’ve always had a close confidant and a main girl. Melanie was like that, so was Bethany, and so was Sofia, and when they were your confidants, you weren’t sleeping with them. That is me, isn’t it?”

“You’re certainly vying for the position, if you don’t already have it.”

“Though you did occasionally sleep with Bethany and Sofia...” she said, with a smirk.

“Are you asking me to go to bed with you, Miss Phelan?” I asked.

“Only if you can do so without it making a mess of things. And my gut says that you can’t. Not right now. But you better be able to when Jennifer gets here.”

“I know. I know,” I sighed.

“Come on! This isn’t a death sentence! If you love Penny as much as you say you do, then talk with her. Have fun with her. Maybe spend time playing, you know having fun sex without focusing on it being perfect lovemaking. Sure, make love once in a while, but explore and have fun. And when Jennifer comes here, you better put your usual ‘heart and soul’ into your physical relationship with her. You’re not ready to do otherwise.”

“I officially nominate you as my confidante. But that means you have to spend time alone with me, even after you and Jamie are together. Will that be OK with him?”

“It’ll have to be. I’ll talk to him.”

“Jackie, will you sleep in my bed with me tonight?” I asked.

“I thought you’d never ask!” she grinned, leaning over to kiss my cheek.

When we got out of the sauna, we went up to my room and each took a quick shower. I changed the sheets, put on my silk pajama bottoms and Jackie borrowed one of my flannel shirts and put that on, along with her panties, and we climbed into bed together. She snuggled close and I put my arm around her.

“Thanks for being here for me,” I said. “Why don’t you plan to come the next two Wednesdays?”

“And cover for your shenanigans?” she giggled. “I should make you pay up for that!”

“I’ll put that in your hands. Ask me and I’ll say yes.”

“No way. There is no chance I’m contributing to anything like the drama you had in High School. As much as I want to fool around with you, I’ll settle for cuddling.”

“Thanks,” I said.

We slept cuddled together and the next morning, she left to go home when I left for work. I spent the day at Nuvatec rewriting several routines, improving the performance of the code. I lost track of time, as I often did when I was coding, and was startled by Scott putting his hand on my shoulder at about 5:15pm.

“You were in that zone Dave talks about. I said your name twice and you didn’t even twitch.”

“My mind is just so focused on the problem at hand, I just tune everything out. It’s kind of like all my senses shut down so that the only inputs are the code I’m reviewing and my ideas on how to improve it, or if I’m writing new code, on how to do that.”

“Well, whatever it is, you’re a better programmer than anyone else here. I really do hope you’ll give our offer a fair shake when you graduate.”

“I will, Scott. I promise you that.”

“Good. Now, head on home so that you’re fresh tomorrow.”

I had a nice relaxing evening at home, playing Ultima and drinking bourbon. Before I went to bed, I wrote in my journal, working through the things Jackie had said to me. I went to bed at 10:30pm, heeding Scott’s advice to be fresh for work the next day.

On Friday, after another day of optimizing code, I picked up Anala on the way home and we worked together to prepare our meal. As usual, we had chicken, because beef was out of the question for her. After dinner, we went to the sauna to relax. I told Anala about my talks with Jackie, and Jackie’s concerns about Penny, as well as my feeling that I had slain the final demon.

“Perhaps. But keep your guard up, Steve. Jackie might be right that your infatuation with Penny has simply masked the problem. You won’t know until you’re tested.”

“I don’t intend to see her, so I’m not sure what that test might be.”

“The desire could rear its ugly head. But that’s an issue for the future. Tell me about this newfound monogamy.”

“Right now, it just seems right to me to not be with anyone but Penny. Jennifer will be here a week from Monday and I’m pretty sure Jackie’s right about that situation. I just need to make sure my attitude is properly adjusted before Jennifer gets here.”

“Of all the girls that you could talk to about how you feel, I think Jennifer’s the best. Your relationship seems clear and the future seems set. Of course, you could change that, but talking to her seems to be low-risk.”

“She and I, and Josie, have to talk. Even though you say things are clear, they aren’t just yet. Not entirely.”

“I suppose that’s true. And when you are in Ohio you’ll be with Bethany. What about Sweden?”

“Sofia, for sure. She may be the only one. I ended things with Tina the other day and of course you know what my plans are with Karin.”

“Yes, but if I understand correctly, you’ve had those plans with Karin before and each time something has changed your course and you’ve come back to trying. What makes you think this time is different?”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 2 StephieChapter 71 Strategic Decisions

October 8, 1988, Chicago, Illinois It was nearly 3:30pm before I saw Stephanie. My ROTC students had left, and Kara’s study group was just winding down, when Stephanie and Jorge came into my study. “She died about an hour ago,” Jorge said, his arm tight around my sister who had tears on her cheeks. “Her parents will take her home to Brooklyn for a funeral.” I nodded, “Jess warned me that was likely to happen. How’s my sister?” I smiled because Stephanie was standing right there. She gave...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 2 StephieChapter 24 Decisions

November 5, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “Steve, Dante is on line two,” Kimmy announced from my door on Thursday morning. I figured at some point he’d call, but whether it would be a good call or a bad call remained to be seen. We’d had a busy week with closing on the building and trying to get it ready for us to move in. This could either be a capstone on a good week, or a down point. I pressed the button on the phone and lifted the handset. “Hi, Dante,” I said. “What can I do for you?” “Can...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 21 Georg and Maria

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

April 5, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “You missed cuddles this morning!” Birgit said accusingly when I walked into the house about 9:30am. “I know, Pumpkin, but I had a work emergency and had to go see Aunt Joyce and Grandpa A.” “And now we have to get ready for karate!” “I know. We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. We hugged and kissed, and went straight upstairs to get ready for...

September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. You understand.” “Does that mean you are now 6th Dan?” I...

October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. It was quiet and peaceful, and...

July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. The cabin crew offered drinks, and I had my first Coke in a year! Meal service began about an hour and a half into the flight. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

July 8, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Is it really that surprising?” Leah asked. “I suppose not,” I replied. “I just didn’t read too much into the kiss on the cheek.” “I didn’t think it was a good idea to kiss you on the lips with all those people around, because I had no idea who they were or what they would think. You were VERY careful with our dance, so I kind of followed your lead.” Which showed very mature thinking on her part. Both of these girls were exactly the kind of students I...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. March 1979 Monday was back to the normal routine of school. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! When we finished, Karin held me tight and refused to let me move off of her. “Sleep there, please,” she whispered. July 3, 1996, Chicago, Illinois I blinked several times and took a breath before responding. It didn’t help. And equally importantly, without explaining Alexi? And without giving me the first...
