“This is more like a fraternity party than a baseball game!” Elyse laughed, as we sat in the bleachers at Wrigley Field watching the Reds play the Cubs.
“Just be quiet and drink your beer!” I teased.
“That’s one thing we couldn’t do at Riverfront! We were too young. Of course, the Reds were so good we wanted to watch the game. I think drinking is the only way to get through games these days!”
“They might have a chance today,” Stephanie said. “It’s only 2-1 after three innings.”
“Yeah, but Tom Browning is 2-4 so far this season, not exactly in World Series form,” Elyse sighed.
“Hey, give them a chance,” Dave said. “They’re not THAT bad.”
“This is no Big Red Machine,” I said. “Not even close.”
Dave Parker hit a single up the middle, which to me didn’t bode well. Parker was a power hitter who batted third in the order ahead of Tony Perez. Perez, another power hitter, also hit a ball on the ground which was fielded by the first baseman for an out, though Parker advanced to second base. Steve Trout threw a wild pitch, allowing Parker to advance to third, and then Buddy Bell hit a ground ball to short, which scored Parker.
“Not exactly Reds baseball there, Squirt,” I said. “But a run is a run.”
“What do you think of Rose as manager?” Julia asked.
“He’s OK,” Elyse said. “They sure are playing better for him than they did under John McNamara, but we need 100-win seasons like Sparky Anderson put together!”
“Those teams were out of this world,” I said. “Rose, Morgan, Bench, Concepción, Perez, Foster, Griffey, Geronimo, Billingham, Borbón, Gullett, Eastwick, and McEnaney! Show me a team even close. Certainly not either of the ones on the field here!”
“Or anywhere else,” Dave said. “‘76 was amazing - 108 wins, and then a sweep of the playoffs AND the World Series. And it was against the Yankees, to boot!”
“I never got into baseball,” Jessica said. “How about you, Kara?”
“No. Steve and Elyse were huge fans in High School, but I never really was. I don’t really follow any sports except the ones Steve currently does.”
“So ice hockey and NASCAR?” Jessica asked.
“Yes. Sofia’s the other big hockey fan in the house. I’m sure you’ve seen the posters and the hockey stick in her room.”
“Was that from a famous Swedish player?” Jessica asked.
Sofia nearly doubled over laughing, “No! That was Steve’s from when he was learning to skate in Sweden. Katt and Mikael’s coach taught him to skate, and suggested that he learn to skate with a hockey stick and gloves because he wasn’t trying to figure skate or dance.”
“How did you end up with it?”
“When he went home from his year as an exchange student, he didn’t want to take it. So he gave it to me as a memory. You know we dated off and on, right?”
“I do. You were his best friend there, I guess.”
“I was. I helped him through his issues with Becky, and quite a bit of other stuff. I decided back then that I wanted to come to the US and be with him, even if it meant just being friends. I hoped to be his wife, but in the end, he didn’t change in the way I would have needed him to.”
Jessica nodded, “He loves you a lot. And we owe you for that wonderful idea to help solve my problem. Want to borrow him?”
I raised an eyebrow, because that wasn’t in character for Jessica.
Sofia laughed, “I made it quite clear the only married man I’ll ever sleep with is my own husband! Not to mention that I’m seeing Stavros, and Steve’s rule would prevent it, even if I were interested!”
“Don’t look so shocked, Tiger,” Jessica said to me. “I’m dealing with my insecurity issues, with Kara’s help.”
“You’re the last person I would think was insecure,” I said.
Elyse laughed, “Now that is rich, coming from one of the most insecure guys it’s been my sorry privilege to know!”
“What the heck are you talking about?” I asked.
“You!” Elyse said. “Oh, you’re secure in your manhood. Aunt Jennie took care of that for you when you were fourteen, but you need more validation than any guy I’ve ever met!”
“Used to, you mean,” Kara said. “He’s mostly gotten past that now.”
“True,” Elyse said. “But he still has moments when he reacts badly because of that insecurity.”
“When was the last one?” Jessica asked.
Elyse smiled at me, and I nodded. I was pretty sure what she was going to say.
“About a year ago, twice. The first one was when Alice found out about Penny and Steve, and I thought he was so depressed that he’d go sit on a park bench and freeze to death. The second one was the day Bethany moved to Chicago. They had a minor tiff about church, and he walked away from her and tried to call you to accept your proposal. Fortunately, you weren’t home.”
“Say what?” Stephanie gasped.
I sighed, “That night, Bethany challenged me about going to church for Pascha instead of staying with her and I was upset. I went to my office and dialed Jessica’s number, intending to accept her proposal. I let the phone ring nine or ten times and then hung up. Elyse came in and hit me over the head and knocked some sense into me.”
“Whoa!” Jessica said. “That would have been a supremely bad idea! And I wouldn’t have known why, would I?”
“No,” I said. “And it probably would have gone even worse than it did with Bethany.”
“I would have killed you, big brother!” my sister said. “That’s assuming Bethany, Elyse, or Jackie hadn’t done it first.”
“I know. I know,” I sighed.
“He’s much better now,” Sofia said. “But he was pretty insecure when he was in Sweden.”
“Blame his mom,” Kara said. “She’s the one who conditioned him like this. No matter what he did, no matter how well he did, she refused to accept it as a good thing.”
“That’s for damn sure,” my sister agreed. “So he sought his validation in sex, and later, computers.”
“I seem to have missed quite a bit of this story,” Jorge said.
“Be happy about that, my Puerto Rican teddy bear! You should be glad you didn’t know my dumb brother in High School. Pete had to bounce my brother off his car to knock some sense into him, among other things. And don’t get me started about a certain girl who shall remain nameless!”
“If anyone says ANYTHING like this around Sharice, I am never going to be able to bring her back to Steve’s house!” Jeremiah said.
“We’re on our best behavior when she’s there,” Elyse said. “We even put the alcohol away.”
“And I’m grateful for that, but if stories like this ever got back to her dad, that would be the end of it.”
The Reds scored single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, pretty much as they had in the fourth - a hit and then advancing the runner. Not an exciting way to win, but they were up 5-2. They tried to blow it in the bottom of the seventh when Browning gave up a double, a single, and then a long fly ball that scored a runner. Ron Robinson came in to relieve Browning, and gave up two singles before finally retiring the side on a Davy Lopes fly to center field. The Reds escaped still ahead 5-4, which was how the game ended.
“Not a bad result,” Elyse said. “But Browning looked bad. He gets the win, barely.”
“Yeah,” Dave agreed. “But a win is a win. Thanks for giving us the afternoon off, boss!”
I chuckled, “I did clear it with Julia. Cindi was a bit bummed that she couldn’t join us, but she had a meeting this afternoon. We need to thank Mario for holding down the fort with Tom, Charlie, and Debbie!”
We left the ballpark and headed for the El, which would take us back to Hyde Park. We’d had a very good afternoon together, and as an added bonus, the Reds had won.
May 29, 1986, Chicago, Illinois
“Everything is set with the schools here in Chicago!” Jessica said when I came down from the attic room at the end of the work day. “August and September, as I said before, plus November, February and April! That way I’m only in Indianapolis for a month at a time, for the most part. The downside is that I have to work all week Thanksgiving week, including Thanksgiving Day until 3:00pm.”
“We can work around that, Jess. It’ll be great to have you here!”
“Also, for Christmas, I only have the 24th and 25th off, but we can work around that, too, I guess.”
“We sure can!” Kara said. “I’m happy!”
“What’s the plan for tonight?” I asked.
“We’re taking Sofia to Greektown as a thank you for saving me from myself!” Jessica said.
An hour later, the four of us were sitting in the Athens restaurant on Halsted Street, sipping Ouzo and eating our salads. Jessica was drinking 7-Up, and she was going to drive home, so I didn’t worry about drinking.
“When do your parents arrive?” I asked Sofia.
“July 7th. They want to take all of us to dinner, and Stavros will come along; he’ll be back on the 2nd. By the way, I saw a note on the board that Tatyana will be here tomorrow.”
“She will. She’s going out with you girls for the evening.”
“Oh, cool! That’s right; you have your posse coming over tomorrow night when we go out.”
“Do you need to spend time alone with Tanya?” Jessica asked.
“I’ll take her to dinner, but otherwise, no. She’s so proper that she doesn’t like to be alone in a room with me now that I’m married.”
“That’s the opposite of your other Russian friend!” Sofia teased.
“That’s for sure!” I grinned. “Tanya is the model of decorum. Lyudmila is pretty much her exact opposite!”
“She’s stopping in Chicago on her way to California later this summer,” Kara smirked.
“Kara Anne Adams!” I blustered. “What did you do?”
“I invited her to stop over for a few days,” she said primly. “I checked with Jess, first.”
Sofia burst out laughing.
“I can’t wait to see this!” she said, trying to control her laughter. “She’s going to expect Steve to screw her silly, and he’s going to resist. It should be entertaining to watch, to say the least!”
“Resist?” Jessica asked in surprise. “Why?”
“Because he’s afraid of hurting you, silly!” Sofia said. “I know you two negotiated a deal, but he’s truly concerned about how you’ll react.”
Jessica nodded, “I suppose. But things have changed significantly this week. I guess I’m not as nervous about everything as I was. I was kind of working myself into a really good bout of fear and depression over the last couple of months.”
“The long-distance thing is tough,” Sofia said. “That’s why I moved here - I knew if Steve and I were to have a chance, I had to be with him. Even though it didn’t quite work out the way I had hoped, things are just fine now.”
“I’m grateful for your help,” Jessica said. “If there’s anything I can do for you, just let me know.”
“Well, in six years I’m going to be ready for Residency! You’ll be a fifth-year surgical resident by then. Maybe I can match to the University.”
“Not Loyola?” I asked.
“That would be fine, too, but UofC would be perfect because it’s walking distance. I plan to list it first, then Loyola, then Cook County.”
“Cook County?” Jessica asked. “That’s a zoo!”
“It’s worse for trauma than for OB/GYN,” Sofia said. “I could also try for other hospitals. There are lots of good options around, including Swedish Covenant. But I have six years to figure it out. And I have to get into medical school, first.”
“Loyola is your first choice?” Jessica asked.
“Yes, then UofC, then Northwestern. But Loyola should be a lock, assuming I get the right score on the MCAT. They have a special program for foreign students that makes it easier to get in and I’m still a Swedish citizen. Once I get into Residency, I’m going to apply for US citizenship.”
“Or you could just marry your Greek boyfriend,” I teased.
“We’re not even close to that,” she said. “He needs to finish his Master’s degree and get a job before that’s even a consideration, and I’m not sure if he’s the right guy or not. I suppose the best answer is we’re working on it. We’ll see.”
The waiter brought our meals, and Sofia proceeded to critique each dish, declaring that none of them were authentic.
“Picky, picky!” I grinned. “But I guess Grandma Katsaros taught you well.”
“She’d be in the kitchen beating the chef over his head with a rolling pin right about now!” Sofia said with a soft laugh. “It’s not that the food is bad, it’s just little things that don’t match the way it’s done in Greece.”
“Joyce would say the same thing about an Italian restaurant, I’m sure,” I said. “And I can’t imagine Donna Grossi tolerating it any more than your grandmother!”
“Jake shipped out, right?” Sofia asked.
“He did. He’s in South Carolina at the Nuclear Training School. But for officers, it’s a short program. Then he’s going to King’s Bay. Once he’s settled, Joyce is going to visit him. He’s been assigned to the unit that does maintenance work on subs, so he won’t go out to sea for at least eighteen months.”
“And Cleveland isn’t going out right away, either, is he?”
“Correct. He’ll be in Virginia working on a new sub - the USS Albany - that won’t be launched for a year or so.”
“He’s going to fit in a submarine?” Sofia asked. “He’s HUGE!”
I chuckled, “Yeah, but I guess he will or they wouldn’t have assigned him to a submarine!”
“Have you talked to your friend Aimee recently?”
“I got a postcard from her saying that she was being assigned to a destroyer based in Rota, Spain, for her summer cruise. My friend from High School, Napoleon McCallum was drafted by a USFL team, but I’m hoping he gets picked up by an NFL team. Of course, then the Navy has to cooperate and assign him to duty that would let him play.”
“You have a lot of friends in the Navy. Did you ever think of joining?”
“The thought crossed my mind once or twice, but I never seriously entertained it. I wanted to go to college, and because I had enough money, I didn’t need ROTC. And now, with everything else, it doesn’t make sense. Even joining the reserves as an officer would be tough because of the business. I guess if the family is going to stay in the Navy it’ll have to skip a generation and be one of my kids.”
We finished our meal, including dessert, and then headed back to the house. We decided on a sauna, and Elyse joined us.
“Jess, are you OK if Dave or Jorge happen to show up?” Elyse asked. “The rest of us have been naked around the guys, but you haven’t.”
“Sure, I’m fine. I’m not really modest. Doctors, especially surgeons, can’t be. They share locker rooms and strip down to underwear in front of each other all the time. It’s no big deal.”
“You carefully stayed on the other side of the lockers when I changed,” I said.
“Out of deference to you, Tiger. I would have been very happy to see you then!”
“That was before we had coffee the first time!” I protested.
“What can I say? I was attracted to you!”
“You and half the women in the world!” Elyse smirked.
“Half?” Kara giggled.
“Good point!” Elyse agreed.
“You know, I was pretty sure right then that I was going to marry him,” Jessica said.
“You’re kidding?!” I gasped.
“No, I’m not. There was just something very special about you. Even though I knew Bethany was your girlfriend, I knew what I wanted right then and there. It just took you about eight months to figure it out!”
Wand, Book and Candle, Part 1 By Elliot Reid "If I chance to talk a little wild, forgive me; I had it from my father." I snapped the book shut, eyes unfocusing from the text. With my fingers I massaged my temples, kneading tension away. I was approaching my birthday with mixed feelings. In two days I'd be sixteen. I'd have crossed another threshold. Would I feel more grown-up? I looked over at the stack of comic books by my bed, beside the Joseph Campbell and the Homer that I was...
Wand, Book and Candle, Part 3 By Elliot Reid I hefted the 'phone, punched in the long-distance number and tried to ease back in the chair by my computer. My head, cushioned by a mass of unfamiliar hair, rested against the wall as I tilted back. I was cocooned in the femme pinkness of my bedroom, still glowing from my pool encounter with Tisha. As soon as I had gotten back I'd shucked off the starched school clothes. Having spent the day prancing around in my hot...
Randi's Vacation Randi woke up to his alarm and quickly silenced it. A quick glance to his left confirmed the Denise was already up. She almost always got up before him preferring some extra time between getting ready for work and needing to walk out the door. He preferred to have enough time to get ready, eat and go. He walked to the bathroom which was right in the master bedroom. The condo they bought was a bit extravagant but provided plenty of room and they could afford it on...

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...
May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...
Wand, Book and Candle, Part 5 By Elliot Reid A scorching plain of fine white mica lay beneath an obsidian sky. Above it hung the Moon, wreathed in flame. Before me hovered a figure I did not recognize, pale and cold. It looked nothing like my father and yet I knew it was him. "Why do feel these things?" I asked the specter. "Why do I want to mutilate my girlfriends?" "The wand asserts itself," the ghost said, its voice dry as a library. "The what?" "The wand. Your old...

Andrea Standing (part 2 of Andrea's Stand) A note at the beginning. One of the problems with writing a serial story is that the author feels a need to recap what happened in the prior portions. Please go back and read part 1, "Andrew Running". It will make this a better story. Briefly Andrew at 19, abused by his father, runs away to a distant relative, Aunt Clara. Andrew goes along with a joke played by Clara's lover Marnie, and ends up as Andrea working in Marnie's luxury used car...
There was a 70 year old grandma that moved in right next to my apartment, I was 18 at the time and my grandpa was 74. I lived with my grandpa at the time. The old grandma would come to talk to my grandpa each day, she would keep teasing him, she would flirt with him, she tried to seduce him. My grandpa ignored her at first but then he started flirting with her after a couple days. I once came out of my apartment only to see her sucking his dick outside on the porch while he was touching her...
July 1980, Colerain Township, Ohio “What’s going on with you and Jennifer?” Larry asked. “She’s upset, but she won’t tell me what happened.” “We’re in a pretty bad place,” I said. “I’m not sure there’s really any future between us at this point.” “Why? You guys managed for a year while you were in Sweden. You can manage another year before college.” “Maybe if she had told me about it right away. Maybe if we had talked about it. But she knew in March and I only found out when her mom...
Andrea gave a long sigh. "Jeez, Markus, why are we here at a stupid bookstore? This is boring!" "Not everything is sex, Andrea," Markus replied. "I'm here to get you to at least try and develop yourself a bit, damn it." "Dear, the only way I want to develop is going through all the positions with you, you know that! Missionary is so boring, so then we switch to the more fun ones! Especially if I'm the one with the cock." She looked away from Markus, her gaze looked dreamily into the...
Wand, Book and Candle, Part 2 By Elliot Reid The magic had altered me. I was no longer fully male. As my girlfriend cycled home, Mom immediately put me to work cleaning up. Denied any private time to explore the changes, I busied myself around the house doing chores. Our brownstone was a tiny place and the slightest clutter made it uninhabitable. I had to tidy and vacuum and rescue stray spiders from corners before they made Mom freak out. I had trouble adjusting to the body Meghan had...
He watched them as they sat sipping their colorful drinks and flirting with male guests and hotel employees alike at the Garden Cloud Lounge. They were undoubtedly four sisters, all in their late twenties and thirties, and attractive. They were obviously American, and they laughed as they tried what little Spanish they knew on the young waiters. He had seen groups like this many times. Their often affluent husbands allowed them to have "Girl's Time Off" now and then. It worked out on both...
November 29, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “I swear I’m going to kill him,” Jessica growled on Sunday morning as we ate breakfast. “I thought the drawings were wonderful,” I said. “He has your likeness down pat! Even the body drawings are perfect!” “And those positions?” Kara teased. “Wow! I love the ‘close up’ drawings of you being spread wide!” “You two are just eating this up!” Jessica whined. “I need it to stop!” “Perhaps you should have taken it a bit easier on the poor boy,” Elyse...
Andrea On Her Own (Part 3 of Andrea's Stand) A Note Before: If you have not read parts 1 and 2, please go back and do so. I have spent some time trying to develop the characters involved and a brief description of the plot so far will not help you much. Chapter 1: Needing More I leaned back in my chair and stretched. It had been a long hour and a half finishing the homework from my calc. class. As I stretched I felt the sweater pressing against the breast forms and glanced...

There is a shortage of cunt in Aldershot! Well at least of good quality cunt. The place has been a garrison town for hundreds of years and there are only two sorts of females in it. The first are the stuck up sort who wouldn't touch a squaddie with a barge pole and the others, who are not stuck up but poxed up, who you wouldn't want to touch with your barge pole. Andrew Running (part 1 of Andrea's Stand) Chapter 1: Running I called my Aunt Clara from the bus station. She didn't seem that surprised to hear from me and when I explained why I was there she told me to walk a couple of blocks to the local diner and get myself a cup of coffee. She'd pick me up in about half an hour. I sat and sipped chocolate milk and tried to eat a pastry while I glanced nervously out of the window waiting for my father to show up and force me into his...

Wand, Book and Candle, Part 4 By Elliot Reid The transformation slowed, the final change trickling into place. I cocked my head at the caramel woman in the mirror and smiled a dazzling, Colgate smile. My new face and figure was perfect in every detail, a Xerox copy of the original. I was the spitting image of my new crush, Tisha Williams. I stared at my coffee-colored hands with their light fingernails, noting the fine knuckle wrinkles. I then lifted my fingers to pat the...
Armand Wilson sat in his home office/study sighing. From the office, things had looked pretty good; business was on track, and Sharon appeared to be handling her new situation well. But in the car on the way home, Armand began getting bad vibes, and when he arrived at his mansion, things were even worse. Everyone on staff was walking around as if on eggshells. It took Armand about twenty minutes' worth of snooping, but the situation resolved itself -- the Hernandez' quarters were an armed...

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...
Julie was still sitting on the bed with me when we heard the commotion in the hall. Then the door to my room banged open and in tumbled a giggling mass of blond. "Holy Shit! This whole family is blond!" I thought. Since I knew Nicky and Jennifer, and the other three were very similar in appearance, allowing for the slight age difference, I assumed the others were my cousins. The two youngest ones were fourteen year old twin daughters of Sarah's twin sister, Debbie. And the third was...
We woke, it wasn’t quite dawn yet with the sun under the horizon gently lighting the morning sky. I wiggled out from under Celia’s grip and slipped out of the bed following Chandra as she exited the small water closet. We dressed, quietly washed and left the room without disturbing the still sleeping strawberry blond. Breakfast was a subdued affair, she was too nervous to contribute anything meaningful. “You will be fine, just believe in yourself.” *Mumble. “You’ll be fine, trust me.” I...
August 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “Boss, Penny just called!” Terry grinned from my doorway on Tuesday morning. “And you’re standing there, why?” I chuckled. “Call when Amber has a little brother or sister!” “I will!” he grinned. August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...
James sat upright on his bed, with his legs crossed and hishands holding his head up. He just stared at the small, red notebook that lay in front of him, this mysterious gift that was granted to him. His own name was engraved on the front. It was almost like it was glowing, beckoning him to open it, to control reality even more. His mind was racing, full of thoughts of Amy, Kirsty and the words written inside the book: ‘Kirsty is going to change her mind and ask me to come over to work on the...
SupernaturalJuly, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...
June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...
July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...
July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...
May 26, 1991, Iron Mountain, Michigan “Shall we see if we can find a farm?” I asked at breakfast on Sunday morning. “That sounds like a great idea,” Jessica said. “There’s a visitor’s bureau in town,” Kara said. “I saw it when we were here the first time.” “I’m sorry I ruined that vacation,” Jessica said. “Ruined?” I protested. “Are you kidding? Getting you back was way more important than a few days of vacation!” “I agree,” Kara added. “Jess, you know exactly how bad off Steve was...
August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. Kara and I had lunch together at IIT, Sofia practiced her driving and parking, and I hung out with Mark Agnini after class for beers. Staci and I got into a couple of interesting debates about the Old Testament that Mark had to break up to allow others in the class to participate. She was very much of the ‘directly...
December 21, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “No shit, Doc!” I exclaimed. “Why the fuck do you think I’ve spent the last twenty-three years in one form of therapy or another? Will you stop treating me like a typical patient and acknowledge and respect that not only do I know myself, but I am NOT like anyone else you have ever met? I don’t fit into any of your cookie-cutter diagnoses nor can you put me in some little box on a chart and say that’s where I belong.” “Is that what you...
Well, now it's time for school. Candace and I go to a small high school, not private, but because we are so rich, it is not exactly public either. The students have been screened by my fathers' security teams; they are all exceptionally bright, well mannered, not prone to causing trouble, and to add ice cream to the pie, all are very good looking. There are 40 students, 20 boys and 20 girls. When the school was larger it had state champion quality teams in boys basketball, girls volleyball...
March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...
July 3, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan It was raining hard when I woke up on Sunday morning, which meant I wasn’t going to be able to run, and would likely have the afternoon free as had happened one other day. Sakurako came to the cottage to ensure I was awake, even though I’d been waking up automatically at sunrise for the past week. When she left, I did my warm-up exercises, practiced my kata, then did a modified version of my warm-up exercises to make up for not being able to...
Andy woke a couple of hours later, his body ached and there was significant pain from the stripes across his arse. He remembered the reason for the pain, got in the shower and diligently shaved as commanded, he then got back into his basic bed and slept again.Andy was woken by the noise of metal clanking next to his bed. “Rise and shine 61. Put them on, ankles first, chains at the back, then your wrists behind your back”Andy looked at the item on the floor, it was two lengths of chain, each end...
January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...
June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...
May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...
July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. Mom, Dad, Aunt Kara and I left the house and headed down the sidewalk towards the hospital where Mom and...
May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...
September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...
“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...
This is a story about a sexual FANTASY written for consenting adults. If you're not both of those, don't read it. Characters in a FANTASY don't get sick or die unless I want them to. In real life, people who don't use condoms and other safe-sex techniques do get sick and die. You don't live in a FANTASY so be safe. The fictional characters in my stories are trained and experienced in acts of FANTASY - don't try to do what they do - someone could get hurt. If you think you know somebody...
October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...
September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...
October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...
