He paused again, took a deep breath and continued.

Soon, she was into drugs and partying, getting arrested several times and always shunning my help when I offered it. Repeated attempts at counseling had no affect and her psychiatrists had a common theme, she was depressed and was using drugs and alcohol to avoid facing her issues."
I nodded when he looked up again, noting the pain and the tears in his eyes. It was a story I had seen many times in my medical career. People with depression often turned to drugs and alcohol.
