Justin and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and were thankful for the training we had received.
We didn’t need the sick bags, although just about everyone else did. When the air got a bit ripe, we cheated, hooked up the fresh air to our suits and sealed them to the visors.
We could also happily chat to each other in a secondary private channel while monitoring general chatter in the shuttle and receive notifications from the shuttle captain. After the initial excitement of take-off was over, and we left Terra-Firma for the first time, we sat back and studied using the peeper functions of our visors.
I guess everyone thought we had just gone to sleep when, after a little while, I heard someone behind me mutter, “Arrogant pricks.”
The woman beside him answered, “Yeah, I had a run-in with one of those arseholes on my first trip. I wasn’t happy when my boss told me I was going to be based on the Moon for six months. The women are just as bad as the men are. I’m sure they are all dykes.”
The man chuckled, “I wonder if she is? It would be a damn shame if she were. She looks bloody amazing in that suit.”
“I’d bend over for him if he wanted to strip search me. That other bastard who tried was a fat pig, at least these two look like professionals. I wonder how long it will take for them to be corrupted like the rest.”
Another voice cut in and said, “Heard a rumour that a special team was being sent to investigate the corruption and have a cleanout. Do you think it’s that pair?”
“Nah, they are detectives going by their badges, but they are too young to be a clean-up crew. It must be their first assignments. Poor bastards probably don’t know what’s in store for them,” the first man said.
“Maybe they are trying a new tact? They need to do something soon as a lot of people are getting sick of being pushed around, and it’s not good for business. I even heard rumours that the Moon wants to become an Independent State,” the second man grumbled.
“Tell me about it. That arse-wipe, Schneider, is as corrupt as they come. I heard he was dealing Snuff supplied by some Russian syndicate,” the woman supplied.
“I thought that stuff was coming from Columbia?” the first man asked.
“No, they are into making Blow, that stuff you use in a vaporiser,” she replied.
(Note: you’re not allowed to smoke anything on the Moon that produces smoke, but the vaporisers don’t set off smoke alarms).
“How come you know so much, or are you bullshitting us?” the second man wanted to know.
“My boss gave me a list of people not to deal with. Being medical suppliers for the domes, we have to be very careful. Our shipments are searched every time without fail. The boss has to pay Schneider a kick-back, so they don’t put their shit in our supplies or steal it,” she said with displeasure evident in her voice.
They went quiet, and I said to Justin, “Do you think the Major knows that sort of shit is going on?”
“Possibly, but he may not know to the same extent that these people believe it is. Ray was reticent about a few things, and I got the impression he hadn’t been in the inner circle that is corrupt. He also mentioned to stay off that bloke, Schneider’s, radar.”
“I think he may have had a run-in or two with him. The thing about the suits suggested that he had found good reasons to wear them at all times, to check them ourselves and not let other people do it for us. That’s why I didn’t object when you insisted on spending that small fortune on the spares. If it means your kept alive, then it’s money well spent,” he replied.
“Ditto, you’re important to me too, my love,” I told him.
“Damn, I love hearing you call me that,” he said happily.
I chuckled and squeezed his hand, and we both decided to get some shut-eye after all.
In case you’re wondering, yes, we are married as Danny and Justin Carmichael.
My Dad, Chief Superintendent Daniel Mc Gee and his girlfriend Senior Detective Tanya Kumar flew down to Brisbane from Port Douglas. As far as anyone knows, they had business with Major Carmichael about Dad’s personnel (us) being killed in a shooting in Brisbane, and to arrange our funerals. We were cremated.
Justin’s mother, Jane Davis, was also invited and unfortunately, she had to be kept in the dark. Dad, John and Tanya did a great job of looking after her. She was even invited to our wedding. I joked with Justin that his new ‘Dad’ seemed a little taken with his mother. John was currently single, and Jane was a handsome woman in her early fifties.
Jane told me when we met at the wedding that her husband had also died in the line of duty when James was sixteen. She too had tried to dissuade James from joining up, but she’d had as much success stopping James, as my dad had with stopping me. My dad and Jane had an instant bond.
Jane was stoical at the funeral. John had been beside her the whole time, and Dad and Tanya were also close at hand. I had wondered if John felt a little guilty about making her go through with the lie and possibly for stealing her son. But then I’d picked up an odd look or two that he gave her and suspected he was interested in her, even though the timing wasn’t quite right.
We got to try out our cover stories on Jane. She did give Justin and me several odd looks when we first met, but if she guessed at the time, she kept it to herself. She gave John and Justin several looks when they were together, and I saw her smile once with a knowing little smile. However, Dad said she played her part in public, and she didn’t ask Justin or me any awkward questions when we met.
