The day begins early with Faustus Mortal in the Basilica Cardinale. He is there each and every day as a religious. Once again he is greeted outside the Basilica by Sari Stone, a young college coed majoring in physics. She has heard of Faustus’s prophesy and is curious about it.

Sari Stone: But this is a relativistic effect. Beside most Uranium isotopes, at least the ones we mine, already have exceedingly long half-lives to start with. How would this help?

Faustus Mortal: It’s like the complex plane mapped onto a sphere and stereographically projected on the complex plane. The complex valued zero makes sense, albeit written (0,0), but the complex infinity is so different from the real infinity on the number line. Now for straight-line linear motion, the idea of relativistic effect is alien. Take for example a person traveling near the speed of light, say 0.9 c, where c is the speed of light in a vacuum. The decimal fraction 0.9 is just 9/10. And suppose the person traveling at that speed, relative to an observer, fires a bullet out at 0.9 c. How fast is the bullet traveling as seen by the observer.

Sari Stone: I took modern physics. It is not 1.8 c.

Faustus Mortal: Correct, it is less than c but more than 0.9 c. This enigma is like the complex infinity which maps out in every direction at the same time. Now this is all linear. Look at zero! What might that correlate with? Or, perhaps better said, correspond to?

Sari Stone blinks.

Faustus Mortal: See that no particle or matter for that matter can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. This is a real-world ‘infinity.’ But the complex infinity is different. Try thinking if this linear motion is ‘infinity,’ how might one characterize ‘zero’?

Sari Stone: By non-linear motion?

Faustus Mortal: Precisely and that non-linear motion might just be ‘spin.’ Even as one cannot ‘add’ velocity to infinity (‘c’) one also cannot ‘add’ angular momentum to spin.

Sari Stone: Whoa! You are confusing me! I understand ‘absolute zero’ and why some probability distributions don’t work. But this is new. Is this in some textbook or another?

Faustus Mortal: The point that I’m trying to make is that if the radioactive half-life can be dilated or expanded by relativistic effect why not shorten or contract it by quantum effects?

Sari Stone: So, if you shorten the half-life, that is increase the value of the radioactive decay constant so as to speed up radioactive decay, what would that buy you?

Faustus Mortal: Today we ‘burn’ U-240, Plutonium, or like short-lived trans-Uranium isotopes. Suppose we could burn the U-238, the longer-lived isotopes and the so-called ‘Waste Plutonium’?

Sari Stone: That would multiply the energy available by over one hundred! Only less than one-percent is fissionable now.

Faustus Mortal: True. And burning waste Plutonium solves the second problem as well—storage of spent nuclear waste. ‘Burn it for energy!’

Sari Stone: I can’t see how you could change that decay rate by any process.

Faustus Mortal: Try this: change the spin.

Sari Stone: But the spin is either plus or minus 1/2 or some integer.

Faustus Mortal: Look at the neutron.
