"It's been six hours since we should have heard from Minara, try and contact her again, Catana."

After several attempts, the quantum communication system just hissed static with no connection established.

Sisanna sat with her boots on the navigation console. "Maybe she has given up and left."

"No that's impossible, I don't care whether you like her or not, Sisanna, Minara is nothing if not reliable. She will do exactly what she says she will do and is certainly someone I would want at my back in a fight."

Sisanna snorted, "Why did you fall out with her then?"

Varna glared at her. "That is my business, Sisanna!" She snapped.

Sisanna put her hands up palms forward. "Okay I was only asking."

"We should jump to her last known coordinates and see if we can find anything. Bring up the map of the sector she was in, Sisanna."

The navigation system projected a three dimensional image of the area of space where Minara last reported her position. "Now from her planned jumps the next jump would have brought her here." Sisanna indicated an area off to the right of the map.

"Plot our jump to those coordinates," Varna ordered.

A short time later the jump engines were ready to be engaged when the long-range sensor array chimed.

"What is it?" Varna snapped.

"Ancestors! Have some patience." Sisanna sat up and turned to the sensors.

With a sigh, Varna pinched the bridge of her nose and shut her eyes. One day she would have to ditch the insolent bitch.

"It is a ship at the extreme range of our sensors, do you want to continue with the jump to Minara's last known coordinates or investigate this contact first?"

Varna looked at the sensor display, and for some unknown reason she felt drawn to investigating the new contact. After all, she told herself, it could jump away at any time and they would lose it. The only reason for Minara failing to make contact was either she had a system failure or her ship had been destroyed. In both cases she would not be going anywhere so Varna justified to herself and the decision was easy. "Plot a jump to the contact quickly. Our jump engines are charged so with luck we can disable it before it jumps away."

There was a lurch as the view from the front ports changed. Varna adjusted their position and moved them towards the contact.

"Theasa, Catana, lock weapons on the contact but don't fire. Petara, scan it." Varna's tone became business like as she turned towards the contact. Ancestors, why do I have a strange feeling about that ship?

Petara checked the scan readouts then turned to Varna. "There is minimal power and only one faint life sign." She turned back to her console and frowned. "The heat signature with respect to the life sign is strange however."

"How is the heat signature strange?" Sisanna asked.

"Well there is very little heat, it is just above the temperature of this region of space."

"That's fucking impossible, Petara, nothing can live at that temperature."

"Well, look for yourself, Sisanna, if you don't believe me! And there is nothing wrong with the sensors either, before you ask. I double checked"

Varna glared at them "Will you two shut up! We will board the ship, investigate what is causing the life sign anomaly and see if anything is worth salvaging." She rose from her command chair. "Petara, Theasa, you're with me. Sisanna, move us to the ship then match velocity and roll while we get ready. Catana, monitor the sensors and be ready with the main weapons." With a chorus of, "Yes Varna." Her crew got to work.

The boarding party made their way aft to the armory. "Petara, you arm yourself with a pulse rifle as a precaution, Theasa and I will just carry pistols." Varna reached for her armor suit belt and buckled it on, then unfolded the legs and torso so she could clip a pistol and spare charge to her belt. Theasa did the same and Petara pulled a rifle from the rack. They walked to the airlock.

Sisanna's voice came over the intercom. "I'm about to engage the docking process as the ship appears to have a Grojan design airlock, but the ship itself looks to be of human, type which is strange." There was a gentle bump followed by the clunk of a locking mechanism. "We are docked, have fun guys."

"All right, let's go." Varna punched the airlock and the inner door opened. They stepped in, and then each of them reached for the additional air packs clipped to the side of the airlock. They clipped the additional air to the back of each other's suits, and checked their total supply. There was sufficient for two hours of normal activity. They activated their helmets. Varna looked round at her crewmates. "Are you both ready?"

"Yes Varna, ready to go," they both replied. She punched the outer lock activation switch and the inner door closed. They stood a few moments while the air was removed, their suits expanding slightly due to the pressure difference. The outer door opened once the pressure had reached zero. They were faced with the outer airlock door of the disabled ship. As Sisanna had established, the airlock was standard Grojan design with a manual release in the center of the door.

Varna turned the release half way and waited. If the airlock had been pressurized the air would leak out slowly, preventing an explosive decompression. No air escaped so Varna opened the catch fully, and the door slid back and up into the hull. The inner airlock door stood open so the ship didn't have any atmosphere.

"Varna, look at this." Theasa pointed to the warning notice on the wall of the airlock. "It is written in both Grojan and human."

Varna stepped towards the notice. "That's strange, Theasa, let's go to the bridge and see if we can find out what happened."

They switched on their helmet lights, stepped out of the airlock and made their way towards the front of the ship. The gravity generators in their suits interacted with the floor plating of the ship, enabling them to walk and keeping them anchored to the floor. Several bodies floated in the corridor, causing Theasa to jump back into Varna.

"Easy Theasa, they can't hurt you."

"I know, but they still gave me a shock, sorry." She looked more closely at them. "Varna look, two are Grojan, but that one is most certainly human. They must have been bounty hunters like us and they boarded the human ship to kill them and take their ears."

"Yes, but there are no blast injuries, so I expect they were in the process of taking the ship when something went wrong and it decompressed."

"Humm..." Petara frowned and pushed one of the floating bodies aside. "But notice they are wearing the same uniform with the same insignia; there is something else going on here, Varna."

"Don't be ridiculous, humans and Grojan working together, it's impossible. At least we can still take the human's ears though and get the bounty these other poor bastards were unable to collect."

They reached the bridge and it became immediately apparent what had gone wrong. Something had smashed through the hull, destroyed the ship's life support and exited out the other side of the cabin causing an explosive decompression. Varna examined the damage to the life support console. "It looks like something went wrong and the bounty hunters fired on the ship."

Theasa slowly turned, her helmet light illuminating the whole of the bridge as she rotated. "There are more Grojan and human, a couple there are still in their seats." She walked over to the two seated corpses. "One is human the other is Grojan. If they were fighting, Varna, would they be sitting side by side?"

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 6 The Old Mans Story

Varna sat in her hotel room, feet on the desk, letting her mind drift. She had over the years grown comfortable with the connection she felt with whatever was shut in the coffin shaped object at the back of her ship's hold. She had asked several of the other captains, in as offhand a way as possible when they happened to meet in a bar on the frontier planets they would visit for supplies, or when they were collecting bounty payments for hunting down humans, if they had ever found anything...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 24 Duplicity

There was a knock on the cabin door. Nora rose and walked over and opened it. A junior officer stood to attention. "The Captain requests the pleasure of your company in her cabin for dinner." Nora glanced back over her shoulder as Varna rose and walked over to her. "All right, Lieutenant, please lead on." As the officer turned away, Varna whispered to Nora, "Don't forget, let me do most of the talking." "Okay," Nora replied with a slight dip of her chin. They followed the...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 21 Escape

Varna slept fitfully, running plans of escape through her mind. For some reason she did not understand she was certain Mark would come for her. But she was no shrinking maiden waiting for her knight to rescue her. She was determined to take matters into her own hands and escape. It niggled at her that they had taken her alive. Of course she didn't object in the slightest, but why? For the bounty all they needed was her ears and her thumb with her personal ID chip. Keeping her alive was a...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 9 Halcyon

The Slexi Moon orbited a barren planet deep in the Scorpious Sector. They had been on the run now for three months and had at times come close to being captured. Varna sat at the Navigation console moving randomly through the database. She was alone, attempting to forget the pull the casket in the hold had on her. When she was occupied or asleep she forgot about it, but when she had time on her hands, time to think the emotion bubbled to the surface. She hated it because it was how Sisanna...

The old man rose. "Now, my dear, there are pressing matters I have to attend to and there is nothing more I can tell you about your artifact." Varna stood and followed him to the door. He put his hand on the door catch then hesitated and turned towards her. "Are you certain you do not want to sell it to me, I can pay a great deal of money for it?" She frowned for a moment - it did take up space in the hold and while most of her crew accepted her eccentric attachment to it Sisanna would...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 15 A Request

The streets were busy, the city bustling, everything had returned to normal after the King and Queen had come out of hiding. The whole country had thought them dead and Minara had suspected the Halcyons would insist she and Arron took the crown. Once it became known they had survived there was rejoicing throughout the kingdom. The fact that she had hidden the royal family from the Usurpers, as Varna and her crew were being called, made her a heroine as far as the people were concerned. As...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 8 Bounty Hunters

"Well it would seem we are officially classed as pirates." Four young women sat round a table in a dark corner of a seedy bar located in a rundown city on a lawless rim planet. Theasa looked round the table at her comrades and captain. "I hacked into the planetary security network and we are on the list, a bounty on our heads." She shook her head. "It's not fair we are lumped together with that murdering bitch Sisanna." A tear trailed down her cheek. "I only just failed the mating...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 27 Family Reunion

The ship smelt damp and musty with a hint of oil and stale alien sweat thrown in for good measure. Mark thumped the main console as the nav screen flickered out for the umteenth time. The jump engines were charging, and as the small three berth scout ship drifted in interstellar space it creaked and groaned like an old fashioned wooden sailing ship. Most of their money had been spent on a decent ship for Arron and Minara. They had left the station several days ago to search for their young...

The inner airlock refused to close. Mark had removed it from its track and dismantled it three times now and it was seriously pissing him off. He had used the door from Varna's cabin to repair the blast damaged airlock. He had ripped the closing mechanism from the cabin wall to escape and it was not worth repairing, especially as the ship needed an airlock to go into space. Cabin doors were a low priority. Mark swung a booted foot at the door and hit it hard in frustration. It groaned and...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 10 Hunted

The evening was cold and Varna stood on the palace battlements watching the market close and the stall holders pack up. She shivered and pulled her cloak round her. She heard footsteps and looked round; Petara was making her way along the walkway towards her. Varna turned back to watch the activity in the square below. Petara stopped next to her and they stood together in silence for a while. "I saw Minara walking around the market this morning," Petara broke the silence. "Yes, I think...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 16 Release

The carriage rattled along the cobbled street, the leather and wood suspension barely isolating Minara from the uneven surface, the early morning light only just illuminating the still deserted city streets. It would be another hour before the traders would be opening their shops and the market holders advertising their wares, each adding to the noise and bustle common in cities everywhere. She yawned, and her mind wondered to the previous night, and she smiled to herself as warmth suffused...

Two Intelligence Corp psychology officers strode down the corridor and knocked on the commanding officer's door, one Grojan and one human. "Come in." The base commander, Major James Evans, sounded weary. The doctor sighed, opened the door and stepped into the commander's office. The commander looked up. Yes?" "We have a problem with Captain Fuller, sir." The commander ran his hands through his hair. "Dear God, that's all I need on top of everything else." The human doctor made a...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 25 Lost

Four days had passed since arriving at the ICorp base and Mark busied himself checking the ship's systems. He unconsciously raised his left hand and touched the long tip of his left ear. There was no feeling as it had no nerves, but the surgeons had done a perfect job of bonding synthetic tissue to his own ears. He now looked like a Grojan. Footsteps sounded behind him and he turned just as Arron and Minara walked onboard, followed by Theasa carrying Arron Jr. Minara smiled, showing perfect...

Catana leant forward and pointed at the star map floating in the center of the control room. "I was told a few human ships were spotted there." Varna walked around the map and tapped the tips of her fingers to her lips in thought. She looked across at the rest of the crew. "That's the Scorpious Sector, it is vast and deserted, if there are humans there then they would be difficult to find." She turned back to the map. "There's something about that sector." She spoke almost to...

"God, I hate fucking computers!" Mark slammed his fist against a bulkhead. He had been working for several days now attempting to get the ship's core to boot. He had traced several faults to the ship's consoles, particularly the navigation control Arron had damaged during his campaign against the pirates. To his frustration the core refused to co-operate with his efforts, a blank screen just stared back at him like a large holographic sightless eye. The Grojan ship's core was a type he...

"Well, ladies, that proved easier than I thought." The man smiled and glanced at Nora's deecrets. Varna could see out of the corner of her eye the female had sat down next to her. She had known them long enough to realize that the way the deecret was swishing her tail, the end moving from side to side in short flicking movements, that she was not happy. Varna chose her target as Nora spoke. "And you are?" "Oh, a distant cousin, my dear, Motasa Rmaxis at your service." He bowed his...

With the baby settled, Minara made her way along the hall to the landing. She stood at the top of the stairs then hesitated. She wondered if Mark Fuller had shown any sign of improvement and regained consciousness. He was due back from inspecting the condition of the army barracks in the city that had suffered during a riot against Varna's...

"Who are they Nora?" "I don't know, Jim, they look human though." Valenora Fuller lay flat on her stomach looking at the group working on a large military style scout ship. Others milled about round the ship, some setting up a camp. From their vantage point on a small wooded ridge overlooking the ship they could spy on the new arrivals without being seen. "They're not Grojan are they?" Diana asked, an edge to her voice. Nora, as her friends called her, twisted back to look at the...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 21 Grojan

The sun was just setting as Minara stood on the palace walls watching the last of the market stalls being packed away in the square below. Her back ached and she groaned; she wondered if she had walked too far today. One of the palace guards stepped away from his post. "Are you alright, my lady?" "Yes!" Minara snapped, and the guard flinched at her tone. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to snap at you." "That's no problem, my lady, would you like a hand down the steps?" "Yes...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 2 Arron

"Stand up straight!" the drill sergeant yelled into Arron Johnston's face and the sergeant's spittle landed on his cheeks. He stood impassively, as to flinch, or heaven forbid, wipe his face, would probably result in fifty press-ups. Arron hated the sergeant with a passion reserved for raw recruits against their drill sergeant, probably since the time of the Romans. For an eighteen-year-old, such treatment seemed pointless. He had joined up to fight the Grojan, not put up with crap like...

With Minara safely out of the way he could move to the second part of the plan. The Grojan would be gathered in one place tonight so it was time to visit the City Guard and make his presence known. First he changed into his traveling leathers, then he made for a local stream and removed the hair dye he had smothered into his hair. Once it was all removed he walked back to the city. As he reached the outskirts people started to notice him and a crowd started to build behind him. He heard the...

The queue for drinks at the bar melted away as soon as Minara bared her teeth. Filed teeth marked her out as a failure, but she had learnt that generally, people both male and female, regarded her and others like her with fear. For some it was justified, and the woman she had come to meet had a reputation as a ruthless bounty hunter and pirate. Some of the things she was reported to have done were justified, some, Minara suspected, were meant to enhance her fearsome reputation. Minara...

Arron had used the culvert to gain access to the castle grounds for a second night. He was half expecting to have to use one of the other secret entrances but he was amazed nothing had changed. He envisaged the Grojan's would use the royal quarters, and since he had warned them of his intensions he hoped they would stay close together. Ideal from his point of view, because he knew all the secret passages in the royal residence. He hoped one was sleeping in what had been the Princess's bed...

The next three days dragged as Arron kicked his heals waiting for a reply from the King of Terfain. He left the Guard building for a safe house on the outskirts of the city in the rundown poor quarter as he wanted to avoid being recognized. The fair-haired General of the Halcyon Western Army was as infamous in Matheros as he was famous in Halcyon. He was relying on the fact he was infamous in Terfain as well for his plan to work. With time on his hands he considered what Minara had told him....

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 9 Marooned

Minara made her way to a small Inn in the center of the village and she pushed open the door and walked to the bar. Conversation stopped and everyone turned and looked at her, and she noted there were no female customers. The inn keeper looked her up and down, raised his eyebrows, but did not comment; she half expected him to say it was for men only and women were not welcome when she noticed a barmaid standing with a tray of drinks between two tables against a far wall. "Where is this?"...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 7 Abandoned

Eight months later, Arron was ready to start the campaign against the Matherosians holding the southern province of Halcyon. He had spent the time bringing what was more or less an undisciplined rabble into a cohesive disciplined fighting unit. A trusted Captain, and troops from Halcyon, had replaced Arron's trained men at Harcross, so he had a core of trained, battle experienced men to help speed up the process. Jerros had remained his second in command. Morale was high and the men were...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 23 A Plan

The final section of the path to his hideaway cottage was treacherous. Arron picked his way with care. He had left it like that on purpose, to dissuade visitors. The little fisherman's cottage he had purchased was originally built with only access by boat. To ensure it remained secure, and just in case he needed to open the door when he didn't have a key, he had adapted part of his defunct radio transmitter case. The case had been secured with a thumb print lock. He had stripped the lock...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 24 Hunted

The journey back proved largely uneventful. The tales of horror and cruelty coming out of Halcyon city had at least abated and things had settled to an uneasy peace. The Grojans, from what he could ascertain, were replacing people from the previous government with lackeys of their own. People with no particular skill, but who had sworn allegiance to them, mostly criminals and dropouts who could feather their own nests by sucking up to the new regime. Of the young King and Queen, other than...

The ship shuddered, waking Arron, and he stretched and yawned. The morning of departure was problem-free, for which Arron was grateful. At least the food they had been giving her was good, although the facilities left a lot to be desired. Aria shook her head, chiding herself for falling into the simple trap of anxiety induced thought spirals. She had lived, the sensors were functioning again after she'd repaired the damage that had been done by the emergency jump, and most interestingly, the sensors had locked onto a structure. As far as she could tell, she was in deep space, with her long range sensors and navigation computer slowly building up data to pinpoint where exactly she was in relation to the galaxy, but no solar...

The Knight and the Acolyte Book 5 Chapter 1 DwarfQueens Reward

Book 5: The Vault's Treasure Chapter One: Dwarf-Queen's Reward By mypenname3000 Copyright 2016 Note: Thanks to B0b for beta reading this. Minx – The Free City of Rartha I padded through the bustling crowd in the market square, my small cutpurse dagger tucked into my palm. It was a ring dagger. Instead of a hilt there was a circle of metal I slipped my pointer finger through. With a flick, I could spin the blade around my finger, slice a purse open, gather the coins with my other...

War in Two Universes Book 6Chapter 1 Jasonrsquos Battleship

“These gates are convenient. We traveled in seventy minutes across four galaxies. In an hour, we will arrive at Gromelikine,” said Andrea. “I listened to the conversations the Gromelix King had with Queen Lynas Parayekt. His behavior was abominable. He reminds me of a spoiled child,” said Linda. Jason nodded slowly. He crossed his fingers, placed his elbows on the table and rested his chin on his fingers. He sighed. “I think she is ready to throw them out of the Kingdom. They don’t need to...

Ovid 16 The Derelict

Ovid 16 - The Derelict By The Professor I think the day I really reconciled myself to being a woman was the day I discovered I really did like to shop. Yes, I know, it's a tired old stereotype, but the shopping trips I enjoyed with Susan Jager allowed the two of us to bond as friends and as women. And it didn't hurt that it gave us a few hours unfettered by children. I probably appreciated that time more than Susan since she just had Joshua while I had Ashley and the twins. Susan...

Traitor Book 1Chapter 4 Adapting to the Ship

Stan provided Jason with a large wardroom fitted out for an Admiral. The dogs seemed to be comfortable, and settled in quickly. Stan then sent Jason to medical where the medical pod fitted his implant so that Jason could communicate with the AIs, the people, and the machines. When he returned, the Ship introduced herself: “My name is Ship. Welcome aboard, and I hope you have a good journey. The Empire built me when they built the ship and made us an integrated whole. That integration is...

The Angry Whore Book 1Chapter 27 Taking a Ship

20 July, 1686 Afternoon After discovering the Angry Whore had been stolen Captain Shadrach Bass declared that he would do whatever it took to not only get his ship back but also manage revenge on those that had taken her. Word came to him that the two Blanchart sisters along with the Spaniard girl he had recently auctioned had escaped but he never made the connection between them and his missing ship. His expectations of who had taken the Angry Whore were such that the thought of women...

Derelict

“How long has it been?” “A long time.” I opened my desk drawer pretending to look for anything. “Fess up. How long?” I tried to deflect. “You first. How long has it been since you had sex?” “This is such an enriching meaningful work discussion that’s vital to completing Nick Shaw’s final report. Isn’t it? Oh, let me answer.” Vivie loved to pry, but she rarely gave up salacious information about herself. “No, it isn’t. But since you insist I go first, you should know that I had sex last...

Lust in Space S1E3 Derelict

Will dozed between his sisters, his hands resting on their warm cunts while they snore the morning away. His thick fingers tapped away at the monitor in front of him. Don had assured him the long range scanners were working, but he had his doubts. There was no way this energy signature could be right. Could it? ****************** Will woke to find Penny straddling him. "Wake up, little brother," she happily called out as his eyes opened. "I have good news!" Will looked at his naked sister...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

The 400 Year WarChapter 8 The French and Indian Wars

1760 The Fall of Montreal The heated battles of the French and Indian Wars were primarily fought in the deep forests and isolated outposts of the exposed English settlers. Dont Sleep on the Subway Book ThreeChapter 57 Nov 1945 the Nurenberg War Crimes Trial Begins

“As I see it today, Hitler and Goebbels were in fact molded by the mob itself, guided by its yearnings and its daydreams. Of course, Goebbels and Hitler knew how to penetrate through to the instincts of their audiences; but in the deeper sense they derived their whole existence from these audiences. Certainly the masses roared to the beat set by Hitler’s and Goebbels’ baton; yet they were not the true conductors. The mob determined the theme. To compensate for misery, insecurity,...

Dawn of the Federation Book I Tomorrow Never KnowsChapter 15 Lorians Ship

Nobody said anything – mainly because nobody knew what to say. Trip was sure that he probably did quite a good fish impression, staring open-mouthed at his son. My son, he reminded himself mentally, before he noticed that everyone was staring at either Lorian or T'Pol, waiting for someone to say something. "Dock your boat, son," Trip said, when he noticed that T'Pol appeared to be shell-shocked. He went over to her and put his hand on her back. In every normal situation she would...

January 30, 1991, Chicago, Illinois “There goes the luckiest man in Iraq,” General Norman Schwarzkopf said as he played a video of a laser-guided bomb destroying a bridge just after a vehicle had crossed it. “Damn!” Elyse exclaimed. “Those videos are amazing, but it’s making this war too much like a damned video game,” I groused. “The damned country is already too ‘gung ho’ for this war as it is.” “But you want us to win, Snuggle Bear.” “Once it started, my only concern is our men and...

The Empire Book 3Chapter 9 The War College Fiasco

The estate was an impressive, imposing, and surprisingly large underground complex that filled a huge cavern, with a dim looking pseudo-sun in the centre. The cavern was so large Jason was sure the whole of Manhattan Island could fit in it with ease. They walked along the stone path that was lined with grey/brown foliage none of which Jason could recognize. The plants looked like a cactus with thick oddly shaped leaves and a conical stem that was about two feet tall. There were trees that...

Dont Sleep on the Subway Book ThreeChapter 60 Jan 1946 the New Two Germanys and the Cold War

The alleged accident that killed General Patton at the end of World War Two was a terrible awakening to the American people that suddenly they had lost the most outspoken critic of the Soviet Union and the dictator Joseph Stalin taking the place of Hitler and his Nazi goons as the primary threat to continuing peace in Europe. He had plenty of critics for his outstanding views on politics and the world around us but he was one hell of a combat commander and inspired deep loyalty in his...
