The journey back proved largely uneventful. The tales of horror and cruelty coming out of Halcyon city had at least abated and things had settled to an uneasy peace. The Grojans, from what he could ascertain, were replacing people from the previous government with lackeys of their own. People with no particular skill, but who had sworn allegiance to them, mostly criminals and dropouts who could feather their own nests by sucking up to the new regime. Of the young King and Queen, other than them disappearing the night the Grojans arrived there was nothing. Arron assumed they had been the first to die in the takeover.

The first thing Arron had to do was disable the Grojan's ship. It would have sensors and was probably heavily armed. With it they had a massive advantage, without it they would be hamstrung and the field would be leveled. But before he started his campaign he needed a secure base. The estate next to his official residence had fallen into disrepair long before he had arrived and the old roofless mansion house was partially collapsed. He had found, while exploring one day, the mansion still had a functional cellar and cold store, the advantage being that they were connected by a tunnel with two entrances and exits. If his hideout were ever discovered, which would be unlikely, he would at least have an escape route along the tunnel.

He arrived at the deserted mansion late at night and entered through the cold store. Everything was as he had left it, and he had stocked the cellar with dried food and water sufficient to hide out for several weeks. For comfort he had added an old table, chair and bed. The cellar door he had concealed amongst the rubble and locked from the inside, the cold store he had locked with a crude combination lock. He had laid everything out so that if anyone else had managed to break in it would just seem to be things left over from the last occupants.

It was too late to start stage one of his plan that night so Arron just settled down to wait until the following evening.

When nightfall came the weather was on his side. Thick clouds threatening rain obscured any moonlight from the waning moon. The darkness was practically total so Arron put on his night vision glasses he had carried down from his northern stash. From his hideout the city center was less than an hour's easy walk, so he made his way to the culvert that supplied water to the palace gardens. It pierced the outer walls, and over the years the iron grills blocking the entrance had practically rusted away. Arron had reminded the old King several times about the security risk, but he had never got round to fixing it. He slipped into the icy water and with little effort broke the lock holding the iron grill closed. The inner one was in much the same condition and a quick twist with a jimmy gave Arron access to the gardens. He pulled himself out of the culvert and checked for any guards. There were none, the gardens were deserted. The Grojan's, confident in the security systems on their ship and the technological ignorance of the natives, were complacent. The ship stood in the middle of the green, dark and unguarded. It was an old scout ship, a type he had been trained in disabling. So far things were going his way. He sighed, Don't jinx it, Arron you twat!

He estimated with a safety margin he had at least five minutes to enter the ship, deploy the charges and get out before the alarm was raised. He checked his timers were primed ready to set. He only needed to place two charges once he had gained access, one on the command console - taking out the controls and communications. The main and back-up computer he would remove from the central core and take back to his hideout so he could reinstate them at a later date. He would place the second explosive in the armory where the rifles and heavy guns were normally stored for good measure. He then planned to leave a message to ensure no locals were blamed for the sabotage. The last thing he wanted was for the Grojan bitches to retaliate against the local population.

He had modified his first charge to take out the entrance hatch. As soon as he had gained entry the clock would start ticking as the alarm would be triggered. Most ships of that configuration were equipped with a silent alarm carried by the captain and second in command. If they were asleep and not carrying their alarm then he had plenty of time, but he did not want to take any chances.

With the heavy clouds, the gardens were in pitch blackness. His night vision goggles allowed him to see easily as he broke cover and ran to the ship, then up the ramp and placed the first charge against the entrance hatch lock and stepped back. Ten-seconds later, after a muffled boom, the hatch opened, with its locking mechanism destroyed. As the ship was in a breathable atmosphere the airlock inner hatch would be inactive so he could walk straight in. He started counting in his head as he entered the ship, turned right then hurried along a short corridor to the control room. He placed the first charge, set it for three minutes, then moved aft to where the computer core was located, pausing to place the message cube on the navigator's table half way to the core of the armory. The door stood open and Arron could see the stacked weapons in their racks; his luck was still holding. He placed the second charge, set for two and a half minutes, grabbed two heavy rifles and put them across his back. He continued on to the core, punched open the access panel and pulled the main and back-up core. He placed them in his backpack turned and hurried to the entrance hatch, then paused at the ramp to check for any activity; all was still quiet. Stupid Grojan bitches are still asleep! He could not help smiling to himself. You're in for a shock, ladies!

He ran for the culvert and had just ducked down into it when the first charge went off, followed by the other in quick succession. Only then did lights appear at the palace windows. Arron made his escape and, keeping to the dark streets he avoided the city Nightwatch. He returned to his hideout under the ruined house and hid the cores and rifles behind a false wall in the cellar.

The next morning he walked into the city, hidden amongst the normal crowds making their way to the central market. There was no outward sign anything had happened. As he suspected, the Grojans would keep the disaster of the night before secret. To admit their ship and heavy weapons had been destroyed would greatly undermine their hold over the people of Halcyon.

Minara was preparing for a meeting with the city resistance when there was a knocking at the front door. She heard the maid open the door and muffled voices. Moments later the maid appeared. "My lady, you are wanted at the palace straight away." Minara's heart missed a beat. Why do they want me, have they found something out?

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 8 Bounty Hunters

The queue for drinks at the bar melted away as soon as Minara bared her teeth. Filed teeth marked her out as a failure, but she had learnt that generally, people both male and female, regarded her and others like her with fear. For some it was justified, and the woman she had come to meet had a reputation as a ruthless bounty hunter and pirate. Some of the things she was reported to have done were justified, some, Minara suspected, were meant to enhance her fearsome reputation. Minara...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 25 A Murder

Arron had used the culvert to gain access to the castle grounds for a second night. He was half expecting to have to use one of the other secret entrances but he was amazed nothing had changed. He envisaged the Grojan's would use the royal quarters, and since he had warned them of his intensions he hoped they would stay close together. Ideal from his point of view, because he knew all the secret passages in the royal residence. He hoped one was sleeping in what had been the Princess's bed...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 23 A Plan

The final section of the path to his hideaway cottage was treacherous. Arron picked his way with care. He had left it like that on purpose, to dissuade visitors. The little fisherman's cottage he had purchased was originally built with only access by boat. To ensure it remained secure, and just in case he needed to open the door when he didn't have a key, he had adapted part of his defunct radio transmitter case. The case had been secured with a thumb print lock. He had stripped the lock...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 18 Sacrifice

The next three days dragged as Arron kicked his heals waiting for a reply from the King of Terfain. He left the Guard building for a safe house on the outskirts of the city in the rundown poor quarter as he wanted to avoid being recognized. The fair-haired General of the Halcyon Western Army was as infamous in Matheros as he was famous in Halcyon. He was relying on the fact he was infamous in Terfain as well for his plan to work. With time on his hands he considered what Minara had told him....

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 20 Further Revelations

At least the food they had been giving her was good, although the facilities left a lot to be desired. Minara had to put her chamber pot by the cell door hatch at first light or it would not be emptied and she had no washing facilities. By the ninth day she really, really, needed a bath. When they had come for her, whoever they were, she had been woken with a sword at her throat. There was no sign of Arron and she noticed his clothes and weapons had gone. She had sat up slowly then swung her...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 15 Allies And More

Arron had started to pick his way over the bodies when he noticed Minara pause. "Wait, Arron, there is one here, still alive." She kicked a body and it moved. "Stop playing dead, animal!" She stood and pulled up her skirts, revealing long shapely legs. She hitched them up to her thighs. Arron stared at the creamy smoothness of her skin, and he sensed the beast within stir. "Minara stop! It won't take much to tip me over the edge again." She smiled, revealing her filed teeth, and drew...

They ate from the supplies left in the shack to save their own. They were both ravenous after their lovemaking. They hid the bandit's bodies in the trees. Fresh mounts were corralled in a small pen behind the trees out of sight of anyone moving along the road in any direction. Arron noticed Minara wince with pain as she settled sat in the saddle. He allowed her to set the pace and noticed her tendency to press forward had abated somewhat. "I assume that was your marvark I saw dead a few...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 13 Departure

The morning of departure was problem-free, for which Arron was grateful. He had ensured the additional wagons for the extra supplies needed for the Princess and had sufficient military escort as well as the wagons for her retinue. With extra military protection to the border and the Halcyon Prince meeting them on the Halcyon border, Arron was confident that baring a full-scale military assault the Princess would be delivered safely. There were some last minute changes with the Matheros...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 2 Arron

"Stand up straight!" the drill sergeant yelled into Arron Johnston's face and the sergeant's spittle landed on his cheeks. He stood impassively, as to flinch, or heaven forbid, wipe his face, would probably result in fifty press-ups. Arron hated the sergeant with a passion reserved for raw recruits against their drill sergeant, probably since the time of the Romans. For an eighteen-year-old, such treatment seemed pointless. He had joined up to fight the Grojan, not put up with crap like...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 11 Meeting

Arron fingered his high collar and shifted his feet. He stood with his three senior officers, his dress uniform stiff and uncomfortable. They were first in line waiting for the King and Princess to arrive. He looked at the sea of faces beyond the line of officials and dignitaries facing them, the somber gray and blue dress of the males and the vibrant colors of the females' long dresses. It reminded him of films he had seen as a child of a fourteenth century ball on earth. He had become used...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 7 Abandoned

Eight months later, Arron was ready to start the campaign against the Matherosians holding the southern province of Halcyon. He had spent the time bringing what was more or less an undisciplined rabble into a cohesive disciplined fighting unit. A trusted Captain, and troops from Halcyon, had replaced Arron's trained men at Harcross, so he had a core of trained, battle experienced men to help speed up the process. Jerros had remained his second in command. Morale was high and the men were...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 22 Escape

Arron had started counting the days since he had been locked in the dungeon. When the first door was opened he expected to be led away for his execution, but so far all that happened was the hatch lifted and a plate of gruel was pushed through. He ate, then placed the empty plate by the hatch, then an hour later the door would open followed by the hatch and the plate was snatched away. Once he had not placed the plate to be collected and the next day he was not fed so he made sure he always...

Minara the Grojan WarChapter 3 Halcyon

Arron had been walking for just over a week. He had left his advanced weapons, explosives and uniform under a low-level force field in the back of the cave, close to where he had been dropped. He wore the clothes of a Halcyon, a citizen of the country he had been assigned to. His identity was that of a junior army captain in the Eastern Division of the Halcyon Army. His papers showed that he originated in the north of the country and had joined the Army and purchased his commission as a...

The ship shuddered, waking Arron, and he stretched and yawned. The ship was no longer rocking so he pulled on his boots and, bending low so as not to strike his head, he made his way above decks and found the ship had docked and lines were being tied. The First Mate spied him. "Good morning, sir, we have arrived, the winds were favorable and we made fast passage. We should have the gang plank out shortly." Arron nodded his thanks and stood back while the crew completed the docking...

The next morning Arron woke early, bathed and dressed in his light leather armor. He walked down to the common room for breakfast and was saluted by the desk sergeant. "Good morning, sir." "Good morning, Jerros." There was a noise outside so Arron walked to the main entrance and opened the doors. He was greeted by a loud cheer. A crowd was quickly gathering; people pushed forward, patted him on the back and shook his hands. He was about to step back through the door when Jerina rushed...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 10 Hunted

The evening was cold and Varna stood on the palace battlements watching the market close and the stall holders pack up. She shivered and pulled her cloak round her. She heard footsteps and looked round; Petara was making her way along the walkway towards her. Varna turned back to watch the activity in the square below. Petara stopped next to her and they stood together in silence for a while. "I saw Minara walking around the market this morning," Petara broke the silence. "Yes, I think...

Two Intelligence Corp psychology officers strode down the corridor and knocked on the commanding officer's door, one Grojan and one human. "Come in." The base commander, Major James Evans, sounded weary. The doctor sighed, opened the door and stepped into the commander's office. The commander looked up. Yes?" "We have a problem with Captain Fuller, sir." The commander ran his hands through his hair. "Dear God, that's all I need on top of everything else." The human doctor made a...

Varna The Grojan War Book TwoChapter 12 Desperate Measures

The night passed off without incident. Varna had insisted they all stay together in the Royal Suite and take turns mounting guard in addition to the palace guards placed outside the suite, none of whom Varna trusted. The following morning at breakfast a palace official hurried in and walked up to Varna, who was helping herself to some chopped fruit from the buffet laid out at the back of the room. "My Lady, may I have a word please?" "Of course." She put down her bowl and turned to...

The ship smelt damp and musty with a hint of oil and stale alien sweat thrown in for good measure. Mark thumped the main console as the nav screen flickered out for the umteenth time. The jump engines were charging, and as the small three berth scout ship drifted in interstellar space it creaked and groaned like an old fashioned wooden sailing ship. Most of their money had been spent on a decent ship for Arron and Minara. They had left the station several days ago to search for their young...

The wig pulled at her hair and Varna resisted the temptation to just pull the ridiculous thing off. As for the gown she was wearing ... Minara had insisted she wear it as it accentuated her figure. Luckily or unluckily for Varna she was practically the same size as Minara so she fitted her gowns without any alteration. She looked down at herself, and with a sigh sat back against the carriage seat. She had a naturally slim figure, but the gown pushed up her breasts so they looked twice their...

Four days had passed since arriving at the ICorp base and Mark busied himself checking the ship's systems. He unconsciously raised his left hand and touched the long tip of his left ear. There was no feeling as it had no nerves, but the surgeons had done a perfect job of bonding synthetic tissue to his own ears. He now looked like a Grojan. Footsteps sounded behind him and he turned just as Arron and Minara walked onboard, followed by Theasa carrying Arron Jr. Minara smiled, showing perfect...

"It's been six hours since we should have heard from Minara, try and contact her again, Catana." Varna sat in her hotel room, feet on the desk, letting her mind drift. She had over the years grown comfortable with the connection she felt with whatever was shut in the coffin shaped object at the back of her ship's hold. She had asked several of the other captains, in as offhand a way as possible when they happened to meet in a bar on the frontier planets they would visit for supplies, or when they were collecting bounty payments for hunting down humans, if they had ever found anything...

The Slexi Moon orbited a barren planet deep in the Scorpious Sector. They had been on the run now for three months and had at times come close to being captured. Varna sat at the Navigation console moving randomly through the database. She was alone, attempting to forget the pull the casket in the hold had on her. When she was occupied or asleep she forgot about it, but when she had time on her hands, time to think the emotion bubbled to the surface. She hated it because it was how Sisanna...

The inner airlock refused to close. Mark had removed it from its track and dismantled it three times now and it was seriously pissing him off. He had used the door from Varna's cabin to repair the blast damaged airlock. He had ripped the closing mechanism from the cabin wall to escape and it was not worth repairing, especially as the ship needed an airlock to go into space. Cabin doors were a low priority. Mark swung a booted foot at the door and hit it hard in frustration. It groaned and...

With the baby settled, Minara made her way along the hall to the landing. She stood at the top of the stairs then hesitated. She wondered if Mark Fuller had shown any sign of improvement and regained consciousness. The streets were busy, the city bustling, everything had returned to normal after the King and Queen had come out of hiding. The whole country had thought them dead and Minara had suspected the Halcyons would insist she and Arron took the crown. Once it became known they had survived there was rejoicing throughout the kingdom. "God, I hate fucking computers!" Mark slammed his fist against a bulkhead. He had been working for several days now attempting to get the ship's core to boot. He had traced several faults to the ship's consoles, particularly the navigation control Arron had damaged during his campaign against the pirates. To his frustration the core refused to co-operate with his efforts, a blank screen just stared back at him like a large holographic sightless eye. The Grojan ship's core was a type he...

The carriage rattled along the cobbled street, the leather and wood suspension barely isolating Minara from the uneven surface, the early morning light only just illuminating the still deserted city streets. On paper the ship looked to be ideal for Varna's purposes - a heavily armed converted freighter that still retained a reasonable size hold. Jillian shivered, the chill of the October night caressing her flesh. She felt naked, despite the thin white shift she wore. Fragile silk was hardly adequate protection for the branches that threatened to shred it each time she brushed against them, let alone the all too real flesh and blood terrors that stalked her. John walked into the night club, observing the press of bodies together. The music pounded out its dance beat, bare skin was beaded with sweat as the bodies pressed together on the dance floor. Hunted

My name is Casper Saint and I had been part of the Cav Scouts, Recon team five to be exact. I was twenty five and headed home or the closest bar I could find to help me forget some of the things I had seen. I was in a small system called Joy, well in a bar in a automated transhipment station. I barely glanced at the bejeweled Slith when she walked in. Slith were reptilian in nature and believed the only real sentient species was them. I do not remember anything after that, I woke naked and in...

The Protector Hunted

The Protector-Hunted By Julie O Chapter 1 Special Agent Ally Burns sat nervously in her doctor's examination room. She was wearing a paper-cloth examination gown that barely covered her body. The Passion of Mother Ethel

Mother Ethel always enjoyed the short walk to the train station. It was beautiful Autumnal morning and Mother Ethel took the opportunity to walk to the train station as she knew that she had a very busy day ahead. Those that saw Mother Ethel along the way bowed reverently, they knew that Mother Ethel was a Nun of the Monastery of Repentance and when a Nun or a Monk walked past it was polite to bow, for many knew what the Nun's and Monk's of the Monastery were capable of. As Mother Ethel strolled...

Dot Dorothea and Dick

Dot, Dorothea, and Dick Chapter One Dear sister: I found this letter among some others, scrolled up and tied with purple ribbon, in a chest belonging to our great grandfather. The name Charles has belonged to several in our family line, but I believe I know the one who received and saved this letter, and kept it preserved for so many years. I believe the letter speaks for itself, so I will now offer it up to you. Dearest Charles: I hope this missive finds you in such good...

My Golden Summer with Blythe Ch 01

Our Last Day of School. I can’t believe it. This is my last day of school, I thought, not sure how I felt now that the long awaited day was here. Stepping out into the beautiful sunny afternoon, heading toward the group of waiting yellow school buses I breathed a sigh of relief. I was glad school was finished. Throughout High School like a ship at sea, I had plotted my course, studying hard. However, the Scholarship that many felt I had rightfully won had somehow ended up going to one of...

Antheas baby 1

“What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”Anthea looked up at her mum as she sat down at the dining table. “Nothing is wrong,” Anthea responded watching as her mum hurriedly dried her hands with a tea towel.“Is the baby okay? Are you okay? Is Jack okay?” she asked as her husband came into the room and pulled up a seat at the table.“We’re all fine Mum,” she responded exasperated with her mum’s anxiety. “I have something to tell you.”“Sit down Helen,” her dad snapped. “Give the lass a chance to speak.”Anthea...

Hunter and the Hunted

I was having a chat to someone recently about the way online flirtation works, and she confirmed my suspicions to me."We are the hunted, and you are the hunters," she said, and of course it's so true. And it's probably as it should be and as old a story as Cromagnon man. Man see woman. Man want woman. Man grunt. Woman shriek and run away. Man chase. Woman catches stiletto in undergrowth.Man catch. And whatever happens in the bushes is the way of the world. But it's even more true online than in...

Damsels In Distress Inc The Hunted

Jillian shivered, the chill of the October night caressing her flesh. She felt naked, despite the thin white shift she wore. Fragile silk was hardly adequate protection for the branches that threatened to shred it each time she brushed against them, let alone the all too real flesh and blood terrors that stalked her. There were three of them. More than that, she didn’t know. That had been the deal she’d agreed to. In the distance, a howl split the night. To her ears, it sounded lupine, even...

Hunted

HuntedI lived in a two storey apartment overlooking a great surf beach. My dad had built the apartments after having pulled down a large house owned by now deceased grandfather which had been left to me. It cost us a fair bit but we managed to build 7 apartments and as I had helped as much as I could in the building whilst I was at uni, Dad said I might as well have title to the one I wanted and we would sell the others. One had a 12 month lease on it which then became monthly. No 6, to a lady...

Uther By Ellie Dauber (c) 2006 Introduction According to the legends of King Arthur, Merlin changed Uther Pendragon into a double for Duke Gorlois, so he could spend the night with Ygraine, the Duke's wife. Fallen Angel Chapter 11 Althea the School Girl

Chapter 11: Althea, the School Girl The infernal screeching of the alarm clock awoke Cal from his reverie. He had been up for about a half-hour, but he had only been lying in bed next to the love of his life. Althea's arms were still clutched about him as he stealthily clicked the snooze button, assuming that it was six o' five in the morning, his usual waking time during the school week. He had been thinking long and hard about the previous two nights. Evan... what have you become? He...

The Devils Pact Sidestory Miss Blythe Is Hot for Her Students

edited by Master Ken Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 "Hi, I am Miss Blythe," I said to my class, writing my name on the whiteboard with a red dry-erase marker. "I will be your World History teacher." It was the first day of the new school year and, as I launched into the course syllabus, my thoughts kept drifting to that day in June at the end of the last term, when my Living God, the Holy Mark Glassner, walked into this very classroom and changed my very outlook on life. I didn't know...

Carruthers Bride

The the wind howled around the quayside as I stepped onto terra firma for the first time in weeks, the wind threw sharp shards of ice to sting our faces as we looked up at the sails as they were finally furled and stowed as our captain grinned at our discomfiture, "Au revoir!" he joked as if he knew we should soon be recalled. Those such as were left, and we were few enough, I shuddered. My best uniform packed securely in my Valise, awaited me, and just a few more duties before I...

Replacement TherapyChapter 4 The Haunted and the Hunted

By the beginning of June, I was pronounced fit by my doctor. I wasn't actually. I had been so careful not to overdo anything, that my real fitness was sadly lacking. But Yolanda had a plan, and when Yolanda wanted me to follow her plan, I had no intention of denying her. We started off with aggressive walks in the morning and after supper. They were an hour long and with the warm weather now bordering on hot some days, I was really feeling the stress of these workouts. She would drop the...
