"Are you taking me hostage?" asked Cordoba, not moving. "That won't sit well with the department."
"Don't be silly," replied Ken. "I'm offering you the chance to get the answers you came here for."
"If I don't check in soon, people are going to come looking for me," she said.
Ken smiled and shook his head.
"I rather doubt that you want the police department to know that they have a witch in their employ," he replied, "so I think it's unlikely that you told anyone you're here. Then there's that whole illegal entry thing. However, in case I'm wrong, please feel free to call them."
He fished a cell phone out of his pocket, flipped it open and held it out to her. Her face tight with anger as she ignored the offered phone and began gathering up her spell components and putting them in her bag. Looking around, she noticed that the person holding the gun on her was no longer there. She had no idea where she'd gone, or when she'd left (Cordoba was sure it'd been a woman) and that disturbed her. She saved her Athame for last and stood with it in her hand. Whitestone smiled at her and turned his back to head inside.
"You coming?" he asked over his shoulder.
"Fuck," she muttered.
She caught up with him after putting the knife away.
"I could have stabbed you, or at least taken you hostage," she said.
"Not likely," he replied. "I can't see you using your Athame as a weapon unless your life was in danger, and you know it isn't."
Cordoba resolutely ignored the tingling in her body on their walked back to the mansion. As they walked, it occurred to her that unlike the men who'd executed the warrant, she hadn't tripped once, or gotten snagged on a single branch since she'd come onto the property.
The large building was mostly dark, but there was a bright, cheery light spilling from what she saw was the kitchen. She blinked as she entered the room, not because the light was so bright, but because there was a naked woman making coffee and baking something.
"Detective," she said, turning with a warm smile, "the coffee will be ready shortly. Unless you'd prefer tea?"
Swallowing hard to ignore the redoubling of her zipping hormones, she shook her head.
"Coffee's fine, thank you."
"Good," said the woman, beaming. "The muffins will be out a few minutes. Blueberry and banana."
This was surreal. Not knowing what else to say, she tried to smile and nodded her thanks.
"So," said Ken, sitting at the head a large wooden table. He motioned her to a seat to his right. "Ask your questions."
Warily, Cordoba sat down just as another woman appeared. This one was tall, taller than her and was almost certainly the woman who'd held the gun on her. She was still dressed in black, but the hood and rifle were missing.
"Oh, this is my wife, Jane," smiled Ken. "You'll have to excuse her -- she gets a bit enthusiastic when we have intruders."
That was odd. The last Cordoba had heard of this guy's wife, it was that she was a vegetable.
"Was she 'enthusiastic' the night the Tankers came calling?" asked Cordoba.
Ken shook his head. "No, she wasn't involved in that. But tell me, are you really worried about a few low-lives who have gone missing?"
"Everyone deserves justice," she replied.
The naked woman glided over with a coffee pot and filled a mug in front of Cordoba, then moved milk and sugar close so she could reach it. She poured a cup for Ken, but not Jane. Cordoba tried very hard to ignore how wet she was and how hard her nipples were, because this was not a situation where she should be aroused. Unfortunately, her nipples were big and more than a little obvious though her thin top. She left the coffee untouched.
"And they received it," he replied.
"Did they," stated Cordoba, watching as Ken took a sip of his sugar laden coffee. "Did you decide that?"
Ken shook his head.
"They did," he replied.
"So they were here," she said.
"They came to invade the house to destroy things. To take whomever of the women -- or girls -- they could get their hands on, and kill anyone who got in their way," he said. "There's a bounty on the people who live here, put on us by the Tankers. I'm sure the police are aware of that, but it seems to have slipped their notice."
"So what happened to them?" she asked, genuinely curious. "How did they even get onto the property?"
"Magic," smiled Ken.
Cordoba rolled her eyes.
"Please," she said. "Try again."
Ken shrugged. "It's the truth. And you know magic exists. It is, after all, what you came here to do, right?"
Cordoba flushed. This was exactly why the fact that she used magic during investigations was a well hidden secret. If this got out, she was finished and she knew it. The naked woman set down a plate of muffins.
"Careful, they're still warm," she said.
Jane reached out for one of them, gingerly holding it while breaking off part of the top. Fragrant steam drifted across the table. Ken leaned back and sipped more of his coffee.
"You're Wiccan," he stated. "And unlike many, you can do magic -- actual magic. You believe in the Goddess."
"There's magic, then there's magic," said Cordoba. "You're telling me you used magic to make those men disappear? Or maybe you turned them into model citizens?"
"How badly do you want to know what happened to them?" asked Ken.
"I want the truth," said Cordoba.
"A truth," said Jane, speaking for the first time. Cordoba shivered as the slightly husky, sensual tone of the woman's voice slid over her nerves. "She doesn't care what happened to them. She needs to know that we're not just like them."
Ken nodded, but it didn't look to Cordoba that Jane had told him anything he didn't already know. She did wonder if she was that transparent in her motives.
"If you want to know, really know, what happened, I can show you," he said. "But all knowledge carries a price."
"So what, you'll tell me, then kill me?"
"That again," he replied, shaking his head. "You already know we're not going to hurt you. But I want to give you a choice. You can sit here, eat what I assure you is a very good muffin, drink coffee and be on your way, or you can get the answers you seem to want."
"I want to know what happened," she said.
Ken stood.
"Come with me."
They walked back outside and over to a very nice garden, one that she couldn't remember seeing the last time she was there. As soon as they entered it, Teresa changed the word from garden to Garden -- capital 'G'. This place was special. She could feel it, and sighed as energy washed over her skin in a sensuous wave. Gentle, but powerful, and so very seductive. She wanted to remove her clothes and feel the air on her bare skin. She wanted a man, or a woman. Or both. And she had both right here.
"Watch," said Ken.
She gasped and the Garden disappeared. In its place appeared a van, some motorcycles and the four missing men...
_" ... Shit, I thought you said there was a break in the wall," said Sam. "There isn't anything back there."
"We didn't see anything either," replied Ed. "Maybe we missed it."
"Crap," said Greggy. "Well, I'll get out the ladder."
He walked over to the van and then heard a short shout.
"Hey Greggy, you guys fuckin' blind?" asked Joe.
"What the hell you talking about?"
"Get over here!"
Greggy walked over to where Joe was standing.
"Just cuz we wanted a low spot in the wall, don't mean you ignore a fuckin' gate you idiot," growled Joe.
He was pointing to a gate set into the wall. It wasn't easy to see, since, like much of the wall, it was over-grown with vines. There was a bunch of brush growing around it as well. Still, those idiots should have seen it.
Greggy and Sam looked at each other.
"That wasn't there a minute ago," stammered Greggy... _
She watched, knowing, actually knowing, what they were thinking as they entered the property through a gate that she herself knew didn't exist. Their hearts were as black as their intent. She watched as, one by one they disappeared. She felt Ken's emotions, rage yes, but sorrow as well. Sorrow that it had come to this. It was justice. She knew that. But it was terrifying to know that the man next to her had brought it forth. And then she saw the woman...
Cordoba suddenly found herself bent over and kneeling on the grass, gasping to breathe. Ken was squatting in front of her with Jane next to him. Cordoba wasn't aroused anymore.
"I think I could use some of that coffee now," she said after getting control of herself.
Ken nodded, offering his hand to help her up.
They walked back into the house and sat back down in the kitchen. It a bit after four am now. Had the entire experience only taken a half hour? She sipped coffee from a freshly refilled mug while looking at Ken and Jane. Teresa had no idea what to say. Had what she witnessed been a crime? No question. Had it been justice? Oh yes. Normally though, that wouldn't matter. She wasn't a judge and she wasn't a jury. Normally, she'd have to bring Ken in and book him. Normally.
It took some time for her hands to stop shaking. The delicious coffee helped as did one of the still-warm muffins.
"You're a witch," she stated.
Ken shook his head.
"Not really, no."
"Warlock?"
Jane rolled her eyes and Ken chuckled.
"This isn't a TV show," he replied. "I'm a Priest."
"Of what?"
"Our Goddess," he said.
Teresa understood that. She was a Priestess of her Goddess. But she had the feeling that even though they might be called the same thing, she and Ken were very, very different.
"Detective..."
"Teresa," she cut in. "You might as well call me that. When I'm not on duty, anyway."
"Teresa," he said with a nod, "you and I don't follow the same Goddess. You're Wiccan. We're not. We follow many of the precepts of the Wiccan path, but we are not Wiccan."
"What are you?"
Ken leaned back with a smiled, and Teresa felt the blood begin to flow in places where she'd rather it didn't. "That is a more complicated question, and not one to answer at four in the morning."
Teresa sighed and looked at her watch.
"You're right," she said. "I probably should be going now. I'm on duty at nine."
"You're welcome to come back any time," said Ken. "As long as it's not in any official capacity. But if I were you, I'd wait until these problems with Captain Harrison and the Tankers has blown over."
"What do you mean?" she asked, immediately wary.
"Harrison has it in for us, me specifically," said Ken. "I'm sure that's obvious to you. And I can't imagine that he'd be happy if he found out you were hanging around here."
"You're really suing the department," she said.
"I am," replied Ken. "I don't want to, but Harrison is going to keep harassing us until we find a way to make him back off. He's got help in the DAs office, and at least one judge he can depend on. Truthfully though, until this thing with the Tankers is dealt with, being associated with us wouldn't be very healthy anyway."
Teresa's heart clenched and she wondered what would have happened to Connie if she'd been on the raid that night. Surely, with the power she'd seen him display, he would have known she was one of the good guys. On the other hand, power had a tendency to do what it wanted. She'd have to mention to Connie that she needed to stay far, far away from this place.
"Fair enough," she said. "I can't promise I won't be sent back here though."
"If you are, you know the score," said Ken. "We're not the bad guy here."
"I know," she said, then looking at the plate, wondered if she could maybe have one more muffin to go. She was very hungry.
Sighing she rose, then remembered with a curse that she'd have to go out the back, then scale the wall to get to her car. Ken smiled and nodded at Jane, who held up a set of keys.
"I took the liberty of moving it around front," said Jane. "Your ... B&E tools are in the back."
"How did you get my keys?" asked Cordoba.
Jane just smiled, and the arousal Cordoba had been barely holding back roared over her. She stood, resolutely ignoring it and looked to them to lead her to the door. They were met there by the naked woman -- whose name Cordoba still didn't know. She had a paper bag in one hand.
"Enjoy, Detective," she said with a smile, then walked up one side of the huge staircase.
"I didn't even get her name," said Cordoba, tearing her eyes from the very fine ass.
"Her name is Sally," said Ken. "She does the cooking around here, and pretty much runs the house."
"Does she always run around naked?" asked Cordoba before she could stop herself.
Jane chuckled and Ken answered, "Most of the women who live here spend their time running around naked."
Cordoba couldn't help turning to look at Jane. The woman looked dangerous -- like a hungry cat -- but she was just beautiful. What would she look like naked?
Almost as if she knew what Teresa was thinking, Jane leaned forward and kissed her cheek. "Come back sometime and find out," she whispered.
Powerful lust shot through Cordoba and she shivered, her breath catching.
"Good night Detective," said the woman.
She too, turned and went up the stairs and Cordoba got herself together and walked with Ken out to her car.
"Drive safely," said Ken as she got inside. Unable to speak, she nodded, then got in and drove off deep in thought. This had been one very strange night.
Ari looked over at Kiera, who was sleeping peacefully on her bed. She smiled and stretched, glad that Kiera hadn't bound her for the night, but sorry at the same time. Ari enjoyed being Kiera's slave, but knew that it wouldn't last too much longer. Soon there would be someone else. Ari didn't know who or when, just that it was coming. Over all, it didn't upset her too much. Kiera and the new person would be Circle which meant that she wasn't really losing Kiera.
