I used the first couple of hours back to catch up with the film crew. None of my customers knew how to find me, so there were no messages about that part of my life. Without those contacts, all I could do was just make hootch and move it.

The film crew wanted to tell me some good news. Because I was exhausted I had them come by the next morning at 9AM.

I took a long hot soak and washed my hair twice to remove any blood that might have gotten on me when I cut the guards throat. I left the box opener because I knew I would never be able to remove every trace of blood from it. I had also knew that if two men had come through the door, of the family suite, I would have died. That was too sobering a thought for a bathtub, but it had to be admitted, I just got damn lucky. Maybe I should be content running moonshine, or run for Sheriff, and forget all about Swamp Thing,

But I never felt alive till I was putting it all on the line. I had been afraid out of my mind, but I had also been thinking a mile a minute. It was exhilarating beyond words. I knew for better or worse Swamp Thing had what was left of my soul, and the money wasn't bad. Laundering money was how most people Got caught. It was always follow the money. I could live my simple life on the pension I received from the state.

I used the liquor money to buy more liquor and other supplies. I also had a plastic shoe box full of cash. I kept it in a the bottom of a plastic tool box. It wasn't much of a place to hide it, but it had to do for a short term hiding place. I still had ten thousand in bug out money hidden in the car. My problem was the same as every other person selling an illegal product. I had way too much cash for the lifestyle I could afford on paper. Fortunately, I did it for the thrills not the cash. I still lived the same as I always had. Even so it still accumulated.

I put a wad of cash in the sink and covered it with Dawn dish washing soap and half a cup of bleach. Then when it dried, I put it in a new envelops that was never handled by me without gloves. I did some thing not to many people in the liquor business ever though of doing. I dropped the envelop in the collection box of the Salvation Army. Another time, I bought several cases of corn beef hash and put them in a collection box for a food pantry for Warren County's homeless. Even so I still made liquor runs, and the money still accumulated.

It was the beginning of winter way to soon. We were forced to shut down the shine business, because no one would be making it again until late summer and into the early fall. I had not had any work from Swamp Thing either. Even though I had done everything right, I figured that were pissed at me for some reason. So fuck them, I thought.

By November their was no more shine to buy. The leaves were off the trees, so stills were easy to spot from the air. And the weather was cold, making it uncomfortable to work in the open. Also the supply of corn had pretty much been exhausted, There were people who operated sill year round, but I didn't know any, and I was ready for a break by the end of November anyway. I had been mixing and selling shine for since July and I knew that I had been damn lucky.

The buyers told me how much they hated to see me shutdown, when I saw them that last time. I explained it all and they knew what it was all about. My shit was real shine, not the crap they would be getting from now till we opened again. What they got in the winter would be weak sugar liquor and it would have a different taste.

I decided I had money I couldn't spend, and money I could get to if I had to bug out in a hurry. I needed to concentrate on the money I couldn't spend. I watched those god awful reality shows. One of them sort of interested me. It was one of the storage locker shows. I became fascinated with it and realized I could use it to laundry money.

I still had my state buy out money in addition to my pension. I had received a lump sum form the state and had not invested it at all. Because I hadn't there was almost no gains for me to pay tax on.

The reason I had never considered doing anything with the money, was I had no idea what I would do if if I lost it. I would have no seed money at all in that case. I was getting money from all over I could use for seed money, but I couldn't really use it because is was gray market money.

I had lived in the apartment long enough. I wanted to own a house but the pension wasn't enough income to buy a house. There just wasn't enough money for large enough down payment. What I needed was enough money to make a large down payment, while still leaving some seed money in the bank. To do that and keep the feds off my ass, I needed to clean the money I had.

As thing usually do for us all, it kind of all came together at one time. I could take money out of my illegal stash and buy some coins. Say I bought $1.000 worth of gold coins with stash money. Then I went to an auction for abandoned storage lockers. I could buy one piece of shit locker for under a thousand bucks. I could salt it with those coins. Then I could sell them on the open market and bank that money legitimately. The first one would be coins, after that it could be anything of value. I could lose a little money and still make money on paper because it would be legal and I wouldn't have any real overhead.

Deputy PorterChapter 2

"Why can't you be sociable," the belligerent drunk asked. "Just go away and leave me alone," the young woman replied. He put his hands on her, which was the step over the line as far as I was concerned. I walked up and showed him my badge. "You need to go on home. You can either leave here now and come back, or you can wait for the manager to ask you to leave in which case you won't be welcome again." I tried to be calm and reasonable. "Bullshit, I ain't going nowhere," he...

Deputy PorterChapter 4

Life fell into a boring routine quickly. It had been a bore since the first month and it stayed that way for eight months. It was out of the blue. when something really exciting happened. It was sad, but that didn't change the fact that it brought excitement to the Sheriff's department. Some hikers found a child's body wrapped in a tarp. Since she was wrapped in a tarp everyone jumped right to murder as a cause of death. It took the Medical Examiner three hours to rule that it was indeed...

Deputy MorpheusChapter 6 Prison Escape

I glanced up as the commander stepped into the room and everyone quieted. He looked at me, “Morpheus, take Swift, Taylor, Samson, Adams and Michaels. They had a prison escape on Devlin.” I nodded and stood, “How many?” He shook his head, “Nine.” I grabbed my bag and started towards the lifts. The other marshals followed me as I dropped to dispersing. We had a four hour wait in the starport before boarding a shuttle up to the cargo transport that was headed to Devlin. There were only a few...

Deputy PorterChapter 27

The state cable news network called me at the motel but on my cell phone. It wasn't the man from the crash, it was a chick who claimed to be his producer. It looked to me as though they were trying to be a real news agency. "Hi there, you are Deputy Sylvia Porter?" she asked. "I am. Who might you be?" I asked. That's when I found out about the producer thing, "So what can I do for you Miss Producer." I didn't even bother to file her name into my short term memory. I didn't expect...

Deputy MarshalChapter 3

The Johnson/Goodall family had been in Sacramento for just over three weeks and they were already on their way to becoming "rich." Eddy had collected $56.25 in wages as a deputy marshal and their company had collected $300 for delivering heavy freight more quickly than the customer had expected. Eddy had already been contacted by potential customers for other jobs which they were now ready to handle. Over the next week, Jeb and Josh earned $53 for moving a load across town in two trips and...

Mistis Adventures Part 144

That day, Sharon and Julia had gone to a fast food place and ordered salads, and, since it wasn't THAT hot, had gone to a park nearby, and took a table under a large willow tree. With the breeze blowing past them, it was more than comfortable, AND private. There were some k**s playing on the playground, and a woman walking her dog, but nothing, or no one, else. They sat eating and talking. "Now that we're alone, and not likely to be eavesdropped on, what's the story?" Sharon asked. Julia paused...

The Boys at Johns HouseChapter 144

Again, I decided that I'd rather fuck than see anything at the convention's last night. I kiss the others and took Juan, Ivan, Yeuhan and Giovanni back to the room with me. Grumpy actually managed to overflow his jock. To entertain me in the elevator, Sweetcakes showed me a new trick. "Hey Papi, that lady with the pressure points? She showed me something cool. Watch." He stepped behind Grumpy and reached down the back of his pants. "Sweetcakes, don't!" Grumpy whined. "I don't have...

My Little VentrueChapter 144

~~Natasha~~ “Is it d-dead?” she asked. Eric nodded as he dragged the spirit’s body back into the alley. Still in the big wolf body, he wouldn’t be able to talk, but body language was fine. She didn’t expect him to take a bite out of the tall, gangly thing. But he did. Natasha gulped as Eric ripped and tore at the humanoid in the plague mask, and gulped down a chunk of its flesh. She gulped again when Arturo did the same. She outright squeaked when Matthew, back into his huge wolf form,...

Maxine Stones New LifeChapter 144

Lunch was ready after our little meeting, so we went into the galley to load our plates. Alice The Drunk's wife had made a large pan of pastry with hamburger, veggies and gravy inside. The food was good. I was a little surprised that she could cook so well for so many people. It was the ideal recipe for that kind of group. "Alice how do you manage to cook for a dozen people, I could never do that," I admitted as I filled my plate the second time. "I am the lunch lady for a high school...

Jokes and GigglesChapter 144

This one is compliments of Rhinebeck A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural Elko County. He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer's field on the other side of a fence. As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. The litigator responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going to retrieve it." The old farmer replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here." The...

Marcy had verified that all the utilities were on including the high speed internet. The realtor had sent someone to completely clean the house, including changing all the linens on the beds. We had stopped at a grocery store and picked up all the necessities, bottled water, instant coffee in case there was no coffee maker, and fruit drinks. I picked up a case of wine...

Breakfast over and Joyce tucked into bed, Jeff put on a pair of shorts and a tee shirt. As he started for the basement to work out on the machines, he realized he had an escort, more like an entourage: Arlene, Ann, Jennie and Melissa. "Mind if we work out with you?" Arlene asked, bumping her hip against his as they walked down the hallway. "No, of course not, but don't you have to be in school?" "Daddy, it's us. The mood was maudlin when we finally retreated into the house. Our parents had done their best to remain invisible but they reappeared when Veronica put out something light for everyone to snack on. It was 2300 before we boarded the flight back to Andrews, midnight when we landed at Andrews, 0100 when I crawled into the big fluffy bed with Marcy and Jenny. The day started early at 0500. I was awakened by the telephone - it was the CIA desk on the second floor in the basement. Iran had moved a step further. They were placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz right on the edge of the deep water channel. It was the next step in the play book. If they could not sell any oil, neither was anyone...

Kenzie got her ride on Derrick's pole. She was happy that it lived up to the expectations she had built up in her mind. Of course, she also got her little box licked by all three of her friends and there was rarely a moment when someone wasn't kissing her or sucking on her nipples. The state had pulled my certification. Without it I was unemployable, even as a game warden. That really hurt, not that I really wanted to back to being a rabbit police person. Even if I found a small town police force that wanted me, they could hire me without that certification. I could bring an action against the state but if the damage to my hand proved to be long term, I would lose. Deputy Done Wrong

From my vantage point behind the low line of brush I watched the approaching vehicle. It was moving along pretty good and I flipped the switch on the remote in my lap, activating the radar gun mounted on my dash. It was a high tech unit, one of the latest on the market, and it automatically recorded the highest speed of the oncoming car. Good thing too, as the driver obviously was in possession of a "fuzz buster" since the nose of the car came down as the driver hit the brakes hard. I...

So I mashed in the Colonel's run. I put in 15pounds of corn and all the stalks I had left after I ground them. Then I added the yeast and let it begin to work off. For two weeks I made myself seen around town. I talked to a few people I knew and who could help me, if I decided to run for Sheriff if couldn't hurt to have their advice. The advice was all the same, try to turn your negatives into positives, admit to everything, and make a joke of it. The Colonel Martin Mash was working and it...

Deputy PorterChapter 190

We went back inside to finish our breakfast. An older man came by to leave his card on our table. "You never know," he said smiling." "Bob you are a defense lawyer, now why in the world would I need you," I asked. "You never know when the Sheriff will get a hair up his ass toward you," He said. "Well Bob, if the Sheriff gets a hard on for me, I'll give you a call." I replied. "I might make you a special price, you never know," the older man said. "Fair enough I laughed," as...

Deputy MorpheusChapter 17 Protg

It was late and I still had several reports to review and four requests to decide on. I glanced at the door when a dragon flew in and landed on a chair back. I sat back and then grinned, “It has been a long time Samantha.” The dragon chirped and was answered by her mother on her nest. I looked at the door as an older Cambra walked through it and she grinned, “Hey kid moving up.” I came to my feet and moved around the desk and caught her in a hug. I stepped back, “Where have you been?” She...

Deputy PorterChapter 35

I went home and worried. I had no way to tell who knew what, so all I could do was act like everything was normal. If I were a Los Vegas Odds maker, I would make it about 3 to 1 in my favor. I wasn't trying to be optimistic there were just so many thing that had to go wrong to get me busted. I had the Boyle brother's phone number and I could call, but I swore I would never contact them again. So I would have to wait till tomorrow at work, when I could pin those in the raid down. My chance...

Deputy MarshalChapter 8

Deputy Marshal Zack Wilson walked into The Silver Dollar Saloon the same way he did every night if was his turn to make the nightly rounds. He went up to the bar and said hello to Jim Hanson the bartender and owner. "How's it going tonight, Jim?" "Oh, 'bout the same as usual. There's a few miners here I ain't never seen afore, but they've been mostly quiet and drinking their beer. OH, SHIT! LOOK OUT, ZACK!" Jim grabbed Zack's arm and jerked him to one side as a thrown knife whizzed...

Deputy PorterChapter 102

Rodney and I settled in to wait for the boss, or at least the rental boss. I had time to assess Rodney in full daylight. He walked with just a slight almost unnoticeable limp. He was not quite six foot tall and probably one hundred and eighty pounds. He was the color of coffee with just a touch of cream. There was some white in his gene pool for sure. His hair was too short to be in the least curly. As I think I said earlier he looked like he might have been a gym rat. Joan Pacer arrived...

Deputy PorterChapter 150

"Look Sylvie, we have to make this look convincing. We want whoever is bugging you to think I'm an old boyfriend," He said it quietly over his beer. "Exactly how far to you think I am going to carry this charade?" I asked. "That depends on how bad you want to know who is bugging you. Believe me I don't want to be here. I have better things to do with my time, don't I?" he said. "Look that cockney accent is going to wear thin in about an hour. I have heard you speak with hardly...

Deputy PorterChapter 171

I rode the bike on Friday for two hours. As I had begun to do lately, I went to the Cafe on the Square for breakfast. There was usually a deputy or two there, and since Mary Ellen was a local business women, she was a topic of conversation around there. Even if there were no cops, there was always some news that someone had gotten from a cop. The latest thing was the cops thought they might have a good lead. I thought, if the lead is the camera men, it was about fucking time. I said nothing....

Deputy PorterChapter 201

"I swear to you Sylvia I don't understand why people are buying that stuff. I don't like the taste of it and I don't like the quick high I get from it." The Brit said. "I know, hun but people don't always make sense. As a matter of fact the one thing you can count on when dealing with people, is that they will all act irrationally at some point." I said. "Yeah, that is true enough. So what's the thrill?" The Brit asked. "Jim says it's designer drugs. Something nobody else has....

Deputy PorterChapter 224

Jeremy was working on the catered meal. "We were calling it a counter rally. A political rally with barbecue and no politics. It was a hell of an idea, even if it was mine. While he did that I went back to thinking about a new car of some kind. The cruiser really was breaking down a bunch, and that meant a tow bill just about every time. Fortunately the breakdown had been during daylight and in area's with cell phone coverage. I was worried that it might not always be so cooperative. I...

Deputy PorterChapter 231

When I woke up, it was the next morning and Juanita the pubs only female employee was standing beside me. "Miss Sylvia is there anything I can get for you." "To be honest I could use some pain killers, and a cup of coffee," I said. "What kind of pain killers?" she asked. Get me some Tylenol extra strength and some Aleve,"I said. "Mostly honey, I really want coffee." "I will bring that and send Jeremy for the drugs," she said. She was back with the coffee and the Tylenol almost...

Deputy PorterChapter 6

"Why on earth would I do that?" I asked. "Because, they tell me I'm good company for one thing. For another you have to eat anyway, and I would pay," he said. "Of course you would pay, that goes without saying, but I think I will pass. You can try again some other time. Right now I have too much on my mind." I said. "Come on, I did some checking. You don't have a boy friend and you live in a motel. You can surely make time for one dinner with a new friend," he demanded. "Maybe...

Deputy PorterChapter 11

I arrived back at the motel, two hundred miles from my home town at four in the morning. I was exhausted, but more concerned with my mom's feeling than anything else. It wasn't the first time in my life that I was awake at 4AM. Since there was nothing I could do to help mom at 4AM, I fell into bed and at least tried to sleep. The ringing of the room phone woke me. My cell phone couldn't ring because it was turned off. I had even taken the battery out, so that I wouldn't be disturbed at...

Deputy PorterChapter 12

"So go home and get some sleep. You look like hell," Webster staid. "Gee thanks, I needed to hear that. However after five hours sleep, it isn't unexpected," I said. "Then don't stand here searching for compliments, go home and sleep. You have tonight off anyway, so when I see you tomorrow at noon for your 7AM shift, I expect you to look your normal gorgeous self," Webster added. "I'm only gorgeous because you are comparing me to the likes of Simpson," I said with a smile. "I...
