December 31, 1995, Chicago, Illinois

“How about it? After the midnight kisses, you and I do what we’ve both wanted to do since that day I met you in your office? The one fringe benefit I never got to take advantage of?”

I chuckled, “Which is?”

She pulled me very close, plastering her firm body against mine, “Being fucked silly by the best there is!”

“Abbie and Trish might have exaggerated!”

“Doubtful! So, how about it? You? Me? Naked? Fucking?”

She ground against me, eliciting the exact response she wanted.

“I received clean test results a week ago!” she continued. “You and me, dancing horizontally! Think about it!”

“I am,” I chuckled. “Quite obviously!”

“And wouldn’t you like to put that someplace warm and wet?”

“A hot tub?” I teased.

She swatted my butt, hard, and growled, “You know what I meant!”

“Let me talk to Kara, OK?”

“Already covered,” Amanda laughed.

“And she said?”

“That it’s not up to her and Doctor Jessica. She said I had to ask you. And I’m asking.”

She ground against my rock-hard erection, which was straining against my khakis. The song ended and I released one of my arms, and we walked to the liquor cabinet arm-in-arm. I poured myself some bourbon and poured her a rum and coke.

“If that’s what you want, come see me after midnight,” I said.

“Yes!” she hissed.

She leaned up and kissed my cheek then scooted away and I saw her ask a Navy ensign Howard had invited to the party to dance.

“She looked like she was about to climb inside your clothes!” Molly observed, coming up next to me. “Gin and soda, with lime, please.”

I poured her drink and squeezed a lime wedge into it and handed it to her.

“She’s our soon to be former nanny. Today was her last day and she’s moving to the UK in a few days.”

“You bang your nanny?” she asked.

I shook my head, “No. That’s the first time I’ve ever danced that close with her. We kept things totally professional. Technically, she’s off duty as of 6:00pm, so in effect, she’s no longer an employee.”

“I’ve seen quite a few other girls try to get that close to you, too! I think the word is ‘incorrigible’!”

“I did tell you I had quite a few girls in the past.”

“But nearly everyone in this room? Or so it seems from the way they all dance with you!”

“YOU danced that close to me, Ms. Kraus!” I countered.

“And even closer this morning before we left Racine!” she laughed. “Want to dance?”

“Sure. Let’s finish our drinks.”

We downed our drinks and then moved onto the dance floor, dancing to three songs, one of which was slow, and Molly did HER best to get inside my clothes, laughing most of the time as she did her best to keep me aroused the entire time.

“You do realize after midnight you can’t do that, right?” I grinned.

“I claim privilege to get a very good kiss after midnight. Well, after your wives get theirs.”

“I think I can allow that!” I grinned.

I danced with several more girls, including my usual VERY close dance with Kathy, then took a glass of bourbon and my pipe to the backyard. I wasn’t surprised when Kara came outside to sit with me.

“OK to talk?” she asked.

I nodded, sucking on the pipe, and blowing out fragrant smoke.

“Taking advantage of Jess not being here?” she asked with a silly smile.

“Yep. She’ll still get on my case, but at least I can smoke in peace!”

“Do you want me to come back later?”

“No, I didn’t mean it that way. Of course, if your daughter comes out I’ll get an earful because they’re getting indoctrinated about smoking at school. Anyway, Amanda first.”

Kara laughed softly, “The girl who, assuming Abbie’s role, expected to get her brains fucked out regularly by the man of the house, and who patiently waited until she was no longer an employee to ask?”

“She did have Jon and Karen,” I chuckled.

“Yes, but after Abbie and Trish talked up your many talents, she wanted to experience them for herself. But when you made the point about her being an employee, she didn’t make an issue of it. If there is any girl who deserves your attention, it’s certainly Amanda!”

“She suggested after midnight, but I think it would be better to wait until the guests have left. Everyone will be gone by midday tomorrow.”

“It sounds as if you like the idea!”

I grinned, “She was right in that I wanted to from the first day I met her just about two years ago!”

“And Maria Cristina?”

“I think I know what’s going on and I’m wondering what you said to her. I’m not sure how long the story is, but if you can finish it before I finish this bowl of tobacco, then go ahead. Otherwise it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.”

“She’s part of a mentoring program for young women that the ‘Chemistry Mafia’ set up. She’s not my mentee. Mine is a young black girl from the projects. I’m working to help her get a scholarship so she can attend IIT and study Chemistry. Maria Cristina is being mentored by my friend Elaine, and wants to be a doctor. All I told her was that you know a lot of doctors and might be a good person to get to know.”

“And?”

“She would be someone who wouldn’t be looking for a permanent relationship anytime soon, and you know how medical school and Residency are.”

“Yes. But WHY would she be interested in an old married guy?”

“You are NOT old, Snuggle Bear!” Kara protested.

“Forgive me; an OLDER, married guy, then.”

“You made a deal with Samantha, didn’t you? One that amounted to a contract?”

“Yes, but that was a VERY different situation. If I’m reading this right, you are basically setting her up to trade a relationship with me for tuition and support while she becomes a doctor! Does SHE know this?”

“I want you to talk to her tomorrow. She doesn’t live too far away, and she’ll come back after lunch. Well, I guess we’ll have to work around you and Amanda.”

“I’m sure Amanda will be OK with waiting until after Jess goes to work tomorrow evening, if you’re OK giving up some time with me.”

“I am.”

“I’m still not understanding what you’ve said to Maria Cristina and what she said. I want YOU to tell me, Kara.”

“She mentioned to Elaine that she was frustrated with not being able to afford UofC and joked about finding a rich guy who would help her. Elaine mentioned that to me, and I talked to Maria Cristina.”

“Seriously, Kara?” I asked, exasperated.

“Explain to me how it’s any different from what happened with Samantha. That was a straight-up trade of her virginity for what she wanted from you, and then a business deal which included sex.”

“That was different.”

“Why?”

“Because Samantha wasn’t in a situation where she was, in effect, forced into a deal.”

“Oh no? Things at home were just so rosy and peachy-keen that she didn’t need you? That she didn’t turn to you out of pure desperation cloaked in what appeared to be a mature business decision? One that blew up the minute a jealous girl told a silly lie which Samantha, as a mature adult, should have verified before she flew off the handle? Do I need to go on?”

I took a deep breath and let it out.

“No. I see your point. So what did you say to her?”

“That I knew someone who could help her with her career, and who had helped several other young women with their careers - Samantha, Jeri, Jess, Abbie, your female executives, Charlie, Penny, Kimmy, and now, Molly. Do I need to go on with the list? I can.”

“No.”

“She said she’d like to meet the guy, and that’s when I asked about what she said to Elaine. She blushed bright red, but didn’t deny it. I asked her if she was serious about it, and she nodded. I told her the same guy who could mentor her had the resources to help her. She said she’d like to meet him.”

“Does she know about Cirque du Steve?” I asked.

“Only the barest details.”

“I’m still not sure this is a good idea.”

“Tell me how this is different from any of the many girls you’ve helped in one way or another. You’ve slept with so many of the girls you’ve hired at NIKA! And so many of the girls for whom you acted as mentor. Do you think having sex with you benefitted them or hurt them?”

“That’s not a simple question to answer,” I said. “Michelle being a perfect counter-example, I think.”

Kara shook her head, “No, the problem with Michelle was that it ended up as an unequal transaction. She gave up her most precious asset, at least in her mind, without ensuring she could get the value for it that she wanted.”

“That sounds horrible, Kara!”

“Really now? It sounds like YOU, Snuggle Bear! You ALWAYS talk about exchanging value! Always! And you do it all the time! Now, suddenly, when I point out a possible exchange of value, it’s a bad thing? What if SHE had brought this directly to you? Or, let me try a different tack. What if Liz had asked you to help pay for college in exchange for being your long-term lover? What would you have done?!”

“You’re not fighting fair!” I chuckled.

“Hah!” Kara laughed. “See! And I can add one more.”

“Go on,” I sighed.

“That was the EXACT deal you made with Jessica. You covered much of her tuition, paid her rent, and helped pay off most of her loans. That was a clear quid pro quo, as you like to say!”

“I had to go and marry a very smart girl,” I sighed.

“I just listen to you, Steve. Think about what I’ve said. It’s the argument you’ve made over and over again. A fair exchange of value. She gets to become a doctor without incurring insane amounts of debt, is cared for dearly, and has access to some of the best doctors in Chicago. You get sex, plus, more importantly for you, the pleasure of successfully mentoring a young woman. THAT makes you happier than all the sex in the world! Will you at least admit that point?”

“Yes,” I nodded, “because it’s true.”

“So why freak out about this? Nobody has coerced anyone or forced anyone. I would never have approached her if she hadn’t said something to Elaine, even if it was just a random thought at first. Finish your pipe and go dance with her. She’s been enjoying her dances with those three young Ensigns who are falling all over themselves to dance with a very pretty Cuban girl! Then invite her to come to lunch.”

“And what’s in this for you?”

“A stable, happy household.”

I shook my head, “No, there’s more to it.”

“A happy husband! One who has what he’s been looking for - a long-term, stable third. May I make an observation? One which I will never ever repeat?”

“You can say anything you want, Honey.”

“It was a mistake to encourage Elyse to be with Eduardo. SHE was your long-term, stable third, and you made a major mistake when you pushed her away.”

I took a deep breath, “You have a point. But I thought I was doing what was best for her.”

“And do you think that’s still true?”

I shook my head, “Not completely. She hates living in the city and we’re totally wedded to this area now. Had I known twelve years ago...”

“She chose not to say anything. When did she tell you she wanted to move?”

“Shit,” I sighed.

“You were your usual «jävla idiot» self. And that is one thing that does concern me with Michelle. You have this trait where when you feel responsible for something, you act like an even bigger «jävla idiot» than you usually do. So far you’ve done OK regarding Michelle, but I am concerned about what happens when she hits rock bottom. And she will.”

I took another deep drag on my pipe and blew it out slowly.

“You’re afraid I’ll drop everything and run to her side.”

“It would fit the pattern. Have you heard from her?”

“Not since I was there. Melissa is keeping me posted. Michelle is just going through the motions right now, but she’s eating and sleeping.”

“Because the baby is everything to her right now. God help her and us if something happens.”

“Please don’t tempt Fate, Kara. She’s always looking for an angle.”

“Steve, do you want a long-term third?”

I nodded, “Yes.”

“And you agree that there is nothing wrong with the value proposition?”

“In a theoretical sense, no.”

“Then go upstairs, dance with her, talk to her, and see if her value proposition works for you. And there is one thing I don’t think you’ve realized.”

“What’s that?”

“If you schedule your trips properly, she could travel with you. And Jamie can’t object.”

“I talk too much,” I said, shaking my head.

I tapped out my pipe, downed the last of my bourbon, and Kara and I went back into the house. I stopped off in the bedroom to brush my teeth and use mouthwash to kill most of the tobacco breath I would have, then went up to the attic room where I asked Maria Cristina to dance. She accepted and after two fast songs, I was surprised to hear My Way by Frank Sinatra.

I looked over at the stereo and saw Al Barton with a silly grin on his face. He took Belinda’s hand and led her out to the dance floor. I laughed, rolled my eyes, and took Maria Cristina into my arms. We danced close, but not too close, our bodies making only the briefest contact when her small breasts rubbed against my chest.

That contact, though was enough to cause a mental image to form, and I knew Kara had chosen well, at least in terms of outward appearances. I was still struggling with the whole idea, but Kara had made a point that I DID make transactions such as the one she’d suggested Maria Cristina was interested in. As I thought about it, I DID have a potential way through the thicket. And a good one, at that.

We finished the dance, I released Maria Cristina, and went back to stand with Kara while one of the ensigns swooped in to dance with her.

“If this is going to work, and I’m not saying it is, I need to develop a relationship with her first. Then we can decide what to do. She was accepted to both UofC and UIC, right?”

“Yes. And she still has some time before she has to decide.”

“And she’s not eighteen yet, which is also a consideration. So, I’ll invite her to lunch and talk to her, but she’ll need to come visit and hang out with us before I decide.”

“She has until May 1st for both schools, so that’s not a problem. And she’ll turn eighteen soon, so that’s not a problem.”

I checked my watch and it was time to go down to the great room to complete the setup, which Kara, Jesse, Eduardo, and Kurt helped with. We called everyone down to hear Sofia read «Nyårsklockan», and then wait for my Mac to countdown to midnight. Everyone counted the last ten seconds, and then there was a serious spate of kissing and sipping of champagne.

“It’ll need to be tomorrow evening after Kara and I walk Jess to work,” I said. “I’ll explain later. I’m not trying to back out. OK?”

“Sure,” Amanda said.

At about 12:15am, Kara mentioned that Maria Cristina needed to go home, and suggested we walk her to her car, which was parked in a lot on Hyde Park Avenue because of the limited street parking around our house and the number of guests we had. I agreed, and we left the house, heading for the parking lot which was about two blocks from the new dojo.

“Why don’t you come for brunch tomorrow,” I said as we reached Hyde Park Avenue. “We can talk.”

“Cool!” she said enthusiastically. “What time?”

“11:00am. Most people are up and about by then. The party will go until around 3:00am.”

“Wow!”

“Did you enjoy yourself?”

“All those Navy guys falling over themselves to dance with me? Plus dancing with you and a few others? Yes!”

When we reached the lot, she got into an early 80s ‘K’ car, and started the engine. Once she’d driven away, Kara and I turned for home. When we arrived, the dancing was in full swing, and a bunch of guys were playing pool. Kara and I went up to the attic room and danced with each other, as well as switching partners so I could dance with Kathy and she could dance with Kurt.

“Your wife is outrageous!” Kurt laughed as we walked to get drinks following the dance.

“It took you this long to figure that out?” I chuckled.

“She continues to find ways to top whatever outrageous thing she said or did the last time!”

“She invited you and Kathy to share our bed with us?” I grinned.

Kurt laughed hard, “OF COURSE you knew! You know, there are days...”

“Where you dream of making love with my wife while I make love to yours?”

“You see, it’s that SECOND part that bugs me!”

I clapped him on the back, “I know, and that’s why it’s just teasing.”

We got drinks for ourselves and our wives, then went to join them. When we finished them, I danced with Kara while Kurt danced with Kathy.

“What did you say to him?” I chuckled.

“Me? I just explained in very clear detail what I’d do with him!” she said primly.

“You did not!”

“Of course not. I simply made the invitation I knew he couldn’t accept and he knew I didn’t mean it!”

“Which was still enough to get him flustered, though I think you’re losing your touch. He didn’t drag Kathy out of the attic room!”

“Or are YOU losing YOUR touch? Kathy didn’t drag HIM out of the attic room!”

“I think after ten years they’re finally immune!”

“Dad?” Birgit said, coming up to us.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed, young lady?”

“Jesse is still awake! Will you dance with me?”

“Even in THIS they compete,” I said to Kara, then scooped up my daughter in my arms.

I danced with her in my arms and with her having her arms wrapped around my neck and her legs lightly around my waist. When the song finished, I kissed her forehead and she kissed my cheek. When I put her down, she went over to where Jesse was sitting and plopped down.

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 26 Americans and Swedes Part I

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden The next week flew by and on Friday, I went straight to Katt’s house from school. I actually arrived a few minutes before she did and sat on the front step because her parents weren’t home from work. Katt came up the walk, and we kissed. “No skating on Friday afternoons?” “No. I traded that for being able to see you a few weeks ago! Otherwise, I’d go straight to the rink from school and be there until 7:00pm.” “Wow. That makes for really long days!” “It...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 3 April Showers Redux

February 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Jesse!” Mom One called up the stairs. “Breakfast!” I typed the last few words into my journal, saved the file, and then closed my indigo iBook G3 Clamshell Mac and put it on my desk. One great thing about my dad being into computers was I always had something new and cool, even if Mom Two didn’t like that he bought them for me. I grabbed my book bag and went downstairs. “Happy birthday!” Mom One exclaimed when I came into the living room. “Thanks,...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

Loosening Up Book 8 Decade Remembered Decade StartedChapter 25 Father Duncan

Dave laughed so hard he had tears coming down his cheeks. The late evening email from his wife Alice had been revealing in so many ways. First, the few photos were highly sexual and revealed that Alice had gotten laid, re-laid, and parlayed quite a few times earlier in the evening. Second, and what broke Dave into laughter was that the man – or one of the men – was a priest of some kind, but more free-thinking than any that the church would own up to having. She even explained that he’d...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

From Candace to CandyChapter 7

Well, now it's time for school. Candace and I go to a small high school, not private, but because we are so rich, it is not exactly public either. The students have been screened by my fathers' security teams; they are all exceptionally bright, well mannered, not prone to causing trouble, and to add ice cream to the pie, all are very good looking. There are 40 students, 20 boys and 20 girls. When the school was larger it had state champion quality teams in boys basketball, girls volleyball...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 27 Americans and Swedes Part II

April 1980, Alingsås, Sweden When I arrived home, I noticed that the pool was full! In addition, the golf course had officially opened on Saturday. I had decided to continue skating in the morning rather than run, since I liked skating a lot more. I’d miss skating when I got home, but I was really looking forward to being able to swim again. I really missed that. On Monday morning, rather than head for school, I went to Centralstationen and caught the train to Alingsås. It was a short trip,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

Late December 1996 – January 1997 We had the big Christmas Day party at Banksia Lodge, much as we had done in previous years. My father again played ‘Santa Claus’, handing out presents to all the children present. On Boxing Day, we watched the televised start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, there were some impressive boats; a huge Reichel/Pugh maxi, owned by the head of the software company SAP. ‘Morning Glory’ was first out of the harbour, followed by ‘Condor of Currabubula’,...

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. From Candace to CandyChapter 5

We woke up mid morning the next day. I rang down to the servants house and asked that breakfast be served in about an hour. I hustled Candace into the shower, telling Candy that we couldn't play; I had a big day planned for us. And that of course set off a round of what? and why won't you tell me, and I don't care if it's a surprise, which finally ended with several swats to the ass cheeks and a gesture towards the shower. Point made, game, set, match; for now anyway. I went through...

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. You’ve invested a bit in some bonds, correct?” “Sure. The double-tax-free municipal bonds you suggested.” “What’s a corporate bond?” I chuckled, “A loan that’s paid back. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...
