New Year’s Eve, 1984, Chicago, Illinois

Pete, Melanie, Jamie, Jackie, Anala, and Prajesh all arrived just before 6:00pm. I made the necessary introductions and we went to the dining room. I pulled Melanie aside and quietly and firmly requested that she leave Jennifer be, and then we joined the others at the table.

I’d made sure that the meal didn’t include any beef out of deference to my Hindu guests, though Anala had always assured me that it was OK if others ate beef in her presence. Stephanie, Josie, Jennifer, and I had cooked a mix of Indian and American food, and had a veritable feast for our friends.

“This food is excellent, just as at Thanksgiving,” Prajesh said when we’d finished.

“Thanks. Anala taught me a few of the recipes, and the others are my own concoctions. We have dessert as well. Let me know if you want coffee or tea, and how you take it,” I said.

I got the orders and Stephanie and I went to the kitchen to get the tea and coffee ready, and then brought it out along with the cake that Jennifer and Josie had made that afternoon, along with some ice cream that Stephanie had purchased at Jewel. When everyone finished their dessert, I refilled the coffee and tea and we sat around the table to talk. It started with talk about architecture between Jackie and Anala, but quickly switched to a more important topic.

“Prajesh found a house,” Anala said. “It’s in Downers Grove, not far from where he works, and it’s right on the train line that goes out to Aurora, which is convenient for working downtown.”

“So, you’re engaged then?” I smiled.

“Yes!” she said happily.

“Congratulations to both of you! I’m happy to hear it!” I said.

“When’s the wedding?” Jackie asked.

“Our parents need to work that out. Probably in March or April. It depends on when the sale on the house closes and Prajesh is able to properly furnish it and get settled.”

“Will you have a traditional Indian wedding?” Jackie asked.

“Of course,” Prajesh said with a chuckle. “Our parents would not allow it any other way!”

While we were talking, the phone rang and I excused myself and got up to answer it.

“Hi, Steve,” I heard a very weak voice say.

“Hi Sweetheart! How are you?”

“OK. Just tired and my arm hurts like hell. But I’m not taking the pain pills during the day because they make me loopy.”

“Ed would say that was normal!” I teased.

“He would!” she replied with a groan. “How’s Jennifer?”

“Better. She finally broke down and talked to me this morning. It’s about as fucked-up as you can get. She agreed to go for counseling, but she said the same thing you did - only I can help her through this. She asked me to make love to her.”

“Did you?”

“No,” I replied. “That would have been foolish in the extreme.”

“Maybe. Let’s talk about it tomorrow. I just ate and I want to take my pain pills and go to sleep.”

“OK. I’ll see you tomorrow after lunch. It’ll be Tatyana, Stephanie, and me. Josie and Jen are going to stay at my house and talk.”

“Good.”

“I love you, Bethany!” I said.

“I love you, too!” she said.

We hung up and as I was walking back to the dining room, the phone rang again. As I expected, it was Tatyana confirming her flight. I let her know about the change of plans, and that we’d be in Chicago for the most part, and that Jennifer was going home on Wednesday as planned. Tanya was confused but I promised to explain everything when she arrived.

The rest of the evening was enjoyable. We ended up watching only one of the movies, The Towering Inferno, starring, among others, the former pro-football player OJ Simpson. He wasn’t very good and I thought he might be better at being a football analyst than an actor. Overall, the movie was entertaining, but nothing special. We ate snacks and talked, waiting for the magic hour of midnight.

About five minutes before midnight I realized that Stephanie and I were the only ones without a partner. Given where we were in our relationship, and especially with people who didn’t know about our past at the house, I wasn’t about to give her a sexy midnight kiss. Jennifer must have read my mind since she whispered in Josie’s ear and Josie nodded and came to stand by me. Jennifer beckoned Stephanie to her and whispered and Stephanie nodded and laughed.

At midnight we toasted and everyone kissed, including Stephanie and Jennifer, which drew a concerned stare from Prajesh and a mirthful smile from Anala. I heard her whisper to Prajesh that he could hardly have expected me to kiss my sister and he nodded. Everyone exchanged handshakes, hugs or quick kisses on the cheek, though Melanie gave me one of her patented French kisses, drawing a surprised look from Prajesh.

“Ignore her,” my sister said to him. “She’s been like that since they were teenagers and even being married hasn’t made her stop. They used to be a couple a long, long time ago. He’s responsible for her and Pete being together.”

“It’s very strange to see that, as well as you kissing another girl.”

“Jennifer and I have been close since I was little,” Stephanie replied.

Everyone had at least something to drink at midnight, so I offered to make beds available, but everyone declined. They hadn’t had a lot to drink, so I didn’t insist that anyone stay. By 1:30am everyone had left and the four of us staying at the house headed to bed. I wondered if Jennifer and Josie would sleep together, but that was up to them, and not really any of my business. My bigger concern was what my sister had planned. It turned out to be the same thing as the previous night, and we fell asleep spooned together.

New Year’s Day, 1985, Chicago, Illinois

The morning routine was the same as it had been the day before, though Jennifer and Josie showed up for breakfast just as I was finishing making it, rather than much later as they had the previous morning. I got the newspaper and saw that the man who had committed the subway shooting in New York just before Christmas, Bernhard Goetz, had turned himself in to the police in New Hampshire.

“I’d have done the same thing he did if a bunch of kids tried to mug me!” Josie said.

“I’m with you on that one,” I said. “But I’m afraid they’ll convict him anyway.”

When we finished eating, we cleaned up the kitchen and collected the glasses, plates, and bowls from the previous night’s festivities and then Stephanie and I changed the sheets on my bed and moved her things into Kara’s room. I grabbed Sofia’s car keys from the desk in her room and we went downstairs.

“Are you two going to be OK?” I asked. “Do you need anything?”

“We’ll be fine,” Jennifer said. “We just need to have a long talk. She cuddled me last night, and that helped a lot.”

“OK. We’ll be back to drop off Tatyana’s stuff, but we’ll only be here for a few minutes. We can do introductions later.”

“Drive safely, Steve,” Jennifer said.

I hugged both girls, and then my sister and I got into Sofia’s Dodge Charger and headed for the airport.

“What’s up with you, Squirt? Sleeping with me and being naked in the bathroom together?”

“What did you tell me Anala said about intimacy?” she said.

“That it doesn’t have to do with sex,” I said.

“Are we still intimate, big brother?” she asked.

“Yes. I guess I was concerned that you were trying to restart things.”

“No, but I WAS curious how you would react.”

“And if I’d said ‘wild fuck’ instead of ‘nice breakfast’ what would have happened?” I asked.

“You wouldn’t have. We’re past that.”

“Pretty gutsy, Squirt,” I said.

“The worst case scenario was that you would fuck me senseless,” she said with a soft laugh. “How is that gutsy?”

“Because of the problems it would cause for both of us. Ones we’re fully aware of and have dealt with. We don’t want to deal with those again. We don’t NEED that the way we did before.”

“True,” Stephanie said.

“Squirt, you loved me unconditionally. You still do. You were, at least in part, trying to make up for the love I wasn’t getting from mom. Your choice of how to do that was unconventional, at best.”

“It worked out perfectly for both of us.”

“And it could have ended in disaster in so many different ways. Did Bethany talk to you about her research, or just interview you?”

“She discussed it with me. But those other situations were different. Didn’t your friend Sarah have a good experience?”

I thought back to the talks I’d had with Sarah Leonard, then said, “Until they got caught, but yeah, I guess. But there was something kind of off there. I could never quite put my finger on it.”

“I’m sure people thought that about us too, big brother.”

“I’m sure they did,” I agreed.

We rode quietly the rest of the way to the airport, where we parked in the short-term lot and walked into the terminal. I checked the arrival board and we went down the concourse to wait for Tanya’s flight to arrive. We only had to wait about ten minutes before the jet parked on the ramp and the Jetway was rolled out. As usual, Tanya was one of the first passengers off the plane.

I gave her a hug and a soft kiss, and for once she didn’t protest, nor did she call me «некультурный».

“Hello, Stepha Rayevna! How are you?”

“Very good, Tanya Ivanovna!” my sister answered.

“Do you have another bag, Tanya?” I asked.

“Yes. This carry-on isn’t big enough for a week!”

“OK. Let’s get it and then we’ll drop your bags at my house and head to Indianapolis.”

“How is your friend?” Tanya asked.

“OK. She had surgery yesterday on her arm, but that’s the last one until they need to remove some of the hardware they used to put her arm back together. She has a lot of hard work to do in rehab, but she’s not in any danger.”

“Rehab?” Tanya asked.

“Rehabilitation. Basically getting her arm and chest better, and recovering from all the surgery.”

Tanya’s bag was one of the first on the carousel and we were quickly on our way back to the house.

“Is this your new car?” Tanya asked.

“No. This belongs to Sofia. Mine is still being repaired. I’ll get it back the day before you go home so you can see the new decadent American sports car I bought!”

Tanya laughed, “I see Lyusya Alekseyevna looking at magazines with such cars all the time. And computers. She is plotting!”

“I’m sure. I suspect that Katya Sergeyevna has her hands full with Lyusya!”

“Yes, she does. Lyusya is hoping you visit again soon so she can talk to you.”

“Talk?” I laughed.

“She will have constant supervision when you are in Washington the next time! We will have no repeat of her «некультурный» behavior!”

We arrived home about thirty minutes after leaving the airport and I took Tanya’s bags to my room. We all used the bathroom and then were back in the car. I hadn’t seen Jennifer and Josie, but they could have been just about anywhere in the house as we’d only used the powder room by the front door and I’d gone straight to my room and back. I hoped everything worked out for them, but at that moment, my mind was on Tanya and Bethany.

New Year’s Day, 1985, Indianapolis, Indiana

The drive to Indianapolis was uneventful. We stopped at Wendy’s in Lebanon for lunch, a new experience for Tanya, and arrived at the hospital just before 2:00pm. We parked and went inside, and up to Bethany’s room where we found Harry, Nora, and Ed with her.

“Ed, let’s go take a walk,” my sister said, taking his hand.

They left the room and I walked over to Bethany had gave her a kiss. Tanya stood by my side.

“Hello Bethany Haroldovna,” Tanya said, using Harry’s formal name I’d given her as we rode up in the elevator.

“Hello Tanya,” Bethany said. “Thanks for allowing Steve to come and for coming with him.”

“You are Stepa’s best friend! How could I refuse his request? It would be «некультурный» in the extreme!”

“How are you feeling, Sweetheart?” I asked.

“Like sh ... crap,” she smiled. “I’m just taking Tylenol 3 during the day. The codeine doesn’t make me loopy like whatever they’re giving me otherwise. I just take that other stuff before I want to sleep at night.”

“What did the surgeon say?” I asked.

“That it was like putting together a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle. There are four screws, two rods and some other miscellaneous hardware in my arm. It’s like Melanie’s, only worse.”

“Do you remember anything about what happened?” I asked.

“No. I was driving along and then I was here. Like I said, I remember a Prince song playing, then nothing.”

“Did the police come talk to you?”

“Tomorrow. They wanted to come yesterday, but with the surgery that wouldn’t have worked.”

“Are they going to let you out on Friday like you thought?”

“Supposedly. Dad made all the arrangements. I want you to wait until the 12th to come to Milford the first time. Next weekend is going to be crazy.”

“Just let me know when the plane will pick me up and drop me off. I’m at your beck-and-call. I’ll just bring my homework with me. I’ll have plenty of reading I can do. I don’t know the requirements for my computer classes yet, but I’m sure I can work that out. Do you know when you might go back to Madison?”

“I’ll have to go sometime before April, and Doctor Winslow and Doctor Hicks said six weeks before I can travel sitting up for a long period of time. I’m not even allowed to climb steps for two weeks. I can start working on my research as soon as I feel up to it.”

“How were you doing that? I mean keeping your notes and stuff.”

“It’s all on note cards and hand-written. I typed the first draft.”

“I’m going to get you a computer. That way I can use it when I’m there. When you move to Chicago, you can keep using it.”

“You don’t have to do that,” she protested.

“It’s for you, but it’s for me, too. I have two computer classes. I’ll bring it with me when I come see you on Friday before you go home.”

“That’s really nice of you, Steve,” Harry said. “But it’s not necessary. I can get one for Bethany. It’ll be much easier if I do it in Cincinnati. Just tell me what to get.”

“I really would like to do it,” I said.

“It’s just not practical,” he said. “You’d have to bring it here and we’d have to get it home. I’ll have it ready for you when you come down on the 12th.”

“OK,” I said, yielding to his logic, despite the fact that I wanted to do that for Bethany. “If you want to take a break, Tanya and I will stay with Bethany.”

“Thanks. That’s a good idea. We’ll take a walk, get some coffee and be back in an hour. Is that OK?”

“Perfect. Stephanie and Ed should resurface by then,” I said, causing Bethany to giggle.

Her parents left arm in arm and I was glad that I could do this for them.

“How’s Jennifer?” Bethany asked.

“OK. She and Josie are talking. She basically spilled everything yesterday. It’s a bit more complicated, but you were right about her wanting and needing my help.”

TatyanaChapter 4 Making a Connection

The weather was more consistently warm and sunny as July progressed. Tatya and Gus were virtually constant companions on the weekends and the arguments from the early days were completely over. He had come to trust her judgement and gave her some latitude to make decisions on changes as long as she kept him informed. Their early morning meetings continued and their improved working relationship was noticeable to the crews and Gus's parents. "We're having a barbeque on Saturday, Gus," his...

TatyanaChapter 11 Windchime

There was a ceremony held when the first ground was turned for the Windchime project. Donald McLaren, the mayor, Taylor Erskine, the principal tenant, and a representative of the Chamber of Commerce all smiled with their hands on a new shovel. Cameras clicked and handshakes followed. A picture would appear in both local papers that week. After sitting empty and abandoned for almost four years, the marina was once again going to be the focal point of Comox harbour. Standing off to the side...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

TatyanaChapter 7 The Unexpected

Four days later there had been no reoccurrence of the vandalism and no group had come forward to claim responsibility. Gus and Donald were beginning to write it off as a one-time occurrence. They had left the additional security on, particularly for the weekend. Tatya, the painting contractor, and the insurance company representative had tried to find a way to paint-match the prefinished siding to the repainted area, but were unsuccessful. Each of the six houses would have to be entirely...

TatyanaChapter 6 Reconstruction

"What do you think will happen?" Mary asked as Donald and Gus sat on the back deck. "If we're lucky," Donald said, "the trees will be disease free and we can get them properly tagged. If not, the Ag people will take them and destroy them ... at our cost." "I'll freeze any payables to Tuscany," Mary said. She'd been through problems with suppliers before. "Maybe that will offset the testing costs," Gus offered sourly. "Do you want to call Morley Koshevoy in the morning, Dad?...

TatyanaChapter 10 Marking Time

There was a distinct change in Gus's demeanor on the job. It had become evident when he returned to work the first week of January. He seemed to be more driven and demanding of his people. Over the year that he had spent on the jobsite, he had worked hard to develop a good relationship with his crews, encouraging them to give him their best performance. Now, he was more insistent. Never rude, but not very complimentary either. This wasn't the same Gus, they thought. It was Wade Boudreau...

January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

Sins from my Stepmother Book 1 Ch 15

I My name is Teddy Carlson. I’m twenty-two years old and I fucked my stepmother. Not just once in some momentary lapse of judgement. But again and again…and again. Before you judge me, there’s a few things you need to understand. First, Dad and I never exactly got on like a house on fire. He was the CIO of a large hedge fund which meant that he wasn’t around much. He travelled to Europe regularly and commuted during the week to Manhattan for meetings. When he was home, he was either...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 20 It Happened One Night

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 79 The Last Risk Of Freeze

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 16 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I went to my room, closed the door and dialed my old number in Milford and Stephanie answered. “Hi, Stephanie!” “Hey, Big Bro! How’s Chicago?” “Pretty good. A lot of stuff is happening. But I have a favor to ask. Well, really, it’s a favor from Ed. I’m coming home this weekend and I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to the apartment.” “You and Kara? On Saturday? I’m sure the answer is yes. Where are you staying?” “I was going to call Mrs. Spencer...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 20 Get Thee to a Nunnery

September 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “These are really interesting pieces,” I said to Siobhán. Kimmy, Elyse, and I were reviewing the two completed pieces that she’d done as examples of what the series would look like. “You don’t like them?” Siobhán asked pensively. “No, I do! Why would you think I didn’t?” “Usually when someone says ‘interesting’ about abstract art it means they don’t like it.” “Sorry, in this case I meant it. Maybe ‘intriguing’ would have been a better word.” She...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

August 15, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Whoa!” Cynthia declared, as she turned the pages in The New Joy of Sex. “All these positions! I want to try them!” She was paging through the section of the book which had lots of illustrations. “Wait!” she gasped, as she turned the page. “Bondage? Whoa! He has her tied to the bed!” “That might be fun,” I grinned. “And then I can tie YOU to the bed?” she asked with a silly smirk. “I suppose turn-about is fair play.” “And threesomes?” “That might not...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

February 16, 1997, Chicago, Illinois Our conversation during the Rap Session was about how to find ‘truth’ and both Elizabeth and I made a strong case for skepticism as the best approach to life. “But if you don’t believe anything is true, how can you decide what to do?” Brenna asked after a lengthy discussion about how to know what was true. “Remember what we said about listening carefully?” Elizabeth asked. “We operate as if the things we’ve come to believe actually are true, but always...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...
