February, 1985, Chicago, Illinois

Nothing interesting happened Friday, either in class or at home. On Saturday morning, Penny came over and we concentrated on programming, though she did hint that she’d very much like to go upstairs. I went to karate with Kara and Sofia, and after my shower and lunch, I called Bethany to check on her. She was doing OK and nothing had changed since I’d talked to her earlier in the week. She said she was looking forward to being in Chicago in April.

During the afternoon, Wen and I worked on our assignment for the microprocessor class, comparing notes and checking the other person’s work. I was waiting for her to make some kind of move, but she was all business-like. I wondered if that would change that evening when we were upstairs.

It was good to see all my friends at the house. Other than some brief chats on campus, I really hadn’t had time to talk to most of them. Bethany and Elyse were right - I was feeling much more relaxed and a lot less stressed, though I did feel a touch of guilt that I couldn’t be with Bethany, even though she’d told me it was OK.

After dinner, I opted for a sauna, since I hadn’t been in there for a few weeks. It was the weekend, so the weekend rules applied. Charlie, George, Sofia, Kara, Elyse, Bert, Jake, Dave, Julia, Jorge, and surprisingly, Wen, joined me. I raised the issue of the empty room in the fall, and asked Charlie if she was still interested.

“Oh hell yeah!” she said. “George, what do you think?”

“What would the cost be?” she asked.

“Same as the dorms. The only thing you pay extra for would be long distance phone calls.”

“I’ll check with my parents. I talk to them tomorrow.”

“Why only one room?” Bert asked.

“Dave and Julia will share one, Kara and Bethany another, Sofia and Elyse the third. My friend Jennifer and her girlfriend Josie will live in the coach house and my sister will use the 2nd room there. That leaves one room, which Charlie asked about over a year ago.”

“Where will we work?” Dave asked.

“We’re going to change the study room into a workspace,” I said. “We’ll use that until we have enough revenue to rent a place somewhere in the neighborhood. Plus I’ll have my office as well. That still leaves the ‘Indian’ room, the great room, and the sunroom for people to use to study. Cindi’s getting married, so she’ll be with Chris, wherever they live, and come to work during the week.”

“When will the corporation be set up?” Julia asked.

“Joyce and I are meeting with the attorney on the 22nd. Speaking of which, Jake, I want to introduce you to my friend Joyce.”

“A blind date? What does she look like?” Jake asked, obviously skeptical.

Elyse laughed, “He’s setting you up with a drop-dead gorgeous Italian girl who’s about 5’6” tall with long dark hair.”

“What’s the catch?” he asked warily. “What’s wrong with her?”

“Nothing,” I said. “I dated her years ago, but it didn’t work out. She hasn’t been able to find the right guy at the University of Cincinnati. She’s graduated now and started running her grandfather’s businesses. You’re half Italian, right?”

“I am. She’s cool with a guy who’ll be out with the fleet?”

“I warned her. She’ll give it a go to see if you guys hit it off.”

“You guys aren’t pulling my leg. She really is smoking hot?”

“They aren’t jerking you around,” Kara said. “I was pretty close to her for a while back in Ohio. She’s very pretty.”

“Interesting,” he said with a grin. “Sure. Why not? What’s the worst thing that can happen?”

When we finished in the sauna everyone took turns in the shower in the basement or went up to their own showers to rinse off the sweat. We joined the rest of our friends in the attic room and Dave put on some music. We danced, drank, and relaxed, and generally had a good time. When I danced with Wen, she danced close, but didn’t mash herself against me. She made it clear that she was available, but wasn’t going to push the issue.

At the end of the evening, I went to the backyard to smoke my pipe and drink my last glass of bourbon. I wasn’t surprised when Sofia joined me, braving the cold February night. Of course, being Swedish, it wasn’t nearly as cold for her as it might have been for someone like Stephie. She sat in the deck chair with me and cuddled close while I alternated between puffing my pipe and sipping my bourbon.

“Are you doing OK?” I asked.

“Better. As I said when you got home from Ohio, the card you left me was a really nice thought. I had a long talk with Elyse, and another one with Kara. They both told me not to worry because you had so much going on at the moment. Elyse also said she told you just to forget about your self-imposed deadline. I’m pretty sure that’s good advice. From what all the girls have said, you get really crazy when you try to force an outcome.”

“True,” I agreed.

“I don’t think you do any of us any favors if you force yourself to decide before you’re ready. You’re still pretty young in the scheme of things.”

“Bethany agrees with you.”

“How’s it going to work when she’s here?”

“The same as it does now, I think. Bethany will share a room with Kara. You’ll share with Elyse. It’ll be different because all of you will be in school and I’ll be working. In one sense, I’ll have more time given that I won’t have homework and I won’t be making trips to Ohio. I’ll probably work a lot, but I can be far more flexible with my evening and weekend schedules when I don’t have to worry about those other things. As for other arrangements, well, that’s always been up to you girls, not me.”

“Which is kind of your way of not making a decision. Well, except when you made that stupid decision with Anala.”

“Don’t remind me!” I pleaded. “I don’t know that I could have found a better way to piss off every single girl who was important to me. I learned my lesson there. I just need to apply the ‘thinking before doing’ part a bit more.”

“How about we go upstairs and work on the ‘doing’ part!” she giggled.

I tapped out my pipe, drained my glass of bourbon and we went up to my room to make love.

I woke long before Sofia in the morning and slipped out of bed, put on my pajamas and robe, and went down to my office and dialed Karin’s number. Lars answered and we spoke briefly before he called Karin to the phone. We caught up on things and then I told her what Joyce had said.

“So, another girl close to you, that you pushed aside, pointed out that you had treated her badly by not really giving her a chance, but implying that she actually had one?”

“I suppose that’s true.”

“There were other girls you misled that way, I suspect.”

“I guess,” I said.

I was thinking of Anna Wilson, and, to some extent, Becky. Depending on how you looked at it, that could include Penny as well. And there were probably others.

“You guess?” she said harshly. “You don’t know?”

“I know,” I sighed.

“You know,” Karin said mockingly. “And what are you doing about it?”

“What can I do at this point? Those girls aren’t in the picture. Well, Joyce is as a friend, but not the other girls.”

“Are you doing it to anyone now? I mean besides me?”

“What?!” I asked in surprise. “You? We talked about this.”

“Yes, we did. But you STILL haven’t told me one way or the other what you want! I gave you time, but it doesn’t appear that you’ve done anything with that time except let it drag on and on. What do you want, Steve? What?”

“I don’t know,” I said, dejectedly. “That’s the problem. I just don’t know.”

“And you expect girls to just wait for you? Just put everything in their lives on hold for you? How selfish is THAT?”

“But if I’m honest with them, don’t they have to make their own decisions? How can I be responsible for what other people do?”

“You aren’t,” Karin said. “BUT, if you don’t tell them the absolute truth, or you couch your words to make things seem possible that aren’t, then you aren’t being honest.”

“You know, you never told me what you wanted. You still haven’t,” I said.

She laughed, “You have to be the densest person on the planet. You’re dense even for a guy! They could use you to shield nuclear reactors you’re so dense!”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“Jesus, Steve! I talk to you every two weeks. We’ve visited each other a bunch of times. We send each other gifts. I haven’t ever been with anyone but you. What the hell do you THINK I want? You can’t be THAT stupid!”

“Then why wouldn’t you say it to me last summer?”

“Because you are, as your sister used to call you, a dumb boy. If I told you that last summer, you’d have gone right out to a jeweler for rings, and asked me to marry you because you felt guilty. I don’t want you because you feel guilty, you stupid, stupid man!”

She was as angry as Joyce had been, if not angrier. And I supposed she had legitimate reasons.

“I’m sorry,” I said, which was the only thing I could say.

“Yes, I’m sure that you are. But WHY are you sorry? And what are you going to do about it?”

“I’m sorry because I obviously hurt you. I’m sorry for not being able to make a decision. As for what I’m going to do, I have no idea what to do. When I try to decide, I get crazy. When I put things off, it looks like I’m stringing you all along.”

“Not deciding is a way of deciding. The only reason this hasn’t blown up in your face completely is that we’re all still fairly young. But you’ve told me your friends are getting married, which I guess is typical in the US. The girls around you are going to have to decide if they want to wait you out or move on. So, they may decide for you. And you might just lose the one you really ought to be with.”

Karin had a point, though she didn’t know the full story with Kara, Jennifer, and Bethany. Really, the only one who was left out, at least of the girls here, was Sofia. Well, and Penny, but that was a different problem. And of course, Karin herself.

“What are you trying to tell me?” I asked. “That you found someone and you want to move on?”

“And if I have, what would you say?”

“I don’t do hypotheticals, Karin. Have you?”

“Speculate. Answer however you feel like,” she said, sounding exasperated.

“I guess I’d tell you that I want you to be happy and if that’s what makes you happy, you should do it.”

“Oh my fucking god, Steve! You KNOW what would make me happy. If you don’t, then I’m wasting my time. And maybe all the girls are wasting their time. Could I be happy with someone besides you? Yes, of course. But would that MAKE me happy? No.”

“Karin, you won’t accept the conditions,” I said.

“Won’t I? I told you what would work with Jennifer and Elyse. If you can’t compromise in that way, tell me right now.”

“Well, with Jennifer, who knows? Given her current state, that might not even be an issue. With Elyse, what you asked for is what she offered. But it’s more complicated. Kara asked to basically be my lover and have kids with me, but without getting married. For life, Karin.”

She was silent for a moment, “Are you telling me that your plan is to have multiple girls PERMANENTLY?”

“I don’t know if it’s a plan, but it looks like that’s how things are shaping up.”

“Then you’ve made your decision, haven’t you?” Karin said, sounding depressed.

“Well, no. I’ve told you what I think the future will look like. It’s up to you to decide if you can accept it or not. I assumed all along that you couldn’t, much like I knew Tatyana would be going home to Russia. That’s why we’ve come to where we are.”

“And you won’t change your mind on this, this, multiple-girl scenario?”

“At this point, I’d say that it was unlikely. I mean sure, it might work out that way, but you know me. When have I ever been with just one girl? Never. You’ve known that all along.”

She sighed deeply, “I have. I just thought you would grow out of it, so to speak. I guess I was fooling myself all along.”

“We both were,” I said. “In fact, that’s probably true of me and Jennifer as well. I just didn’t know why until too late.”

“We’ve tried pretty much everything I can think of,” Karin said. “I’m out of ideas. And if what you say is true, I don’t see much point in even trying.”

“So this is it?” I asked, as tears formed in my eyes.

“I suspect it is. But I hate saying goodbye over the phone.”

“Joyce suggested I talk to you face-to-face. I’m guessing it’s because she knew what would happen and that trying to say goodbye over the phone would just feel empty.”

“It’s going to feel empty no matter what, but I had hoped we’d do it when we were together. Do you have your daybook that I sent you?”

“Yeah, it’s on my desk.”

“Turn to June 30,” she said.

I flipped to June 30th. I hadn’t seen that page before. There was a heart around the number and a note that said ‘Steve’.

“A heart in pink magic marker and the word ‘Steve’,” I said.

“I knew, one way or the other, that day would be important - either the beginning or the end. I suppose I know which it is now. If it was the beginning, that’s when I’d move to Chicago. If it was the end, that’s when I’d visit you to say goodbye.”

“How could you know?” I said.

“You told me that you planned to decide after you graduated. I figured we’d have this conversation in May or June, so it just made sense.”

“And the heart?” I asked.

“Because, no matter what, I love you, Steve Adams, always and forever.”

“I love you, Karin Andersson. And I’m sorry that it came to this.”

“I think it was always going to end this way. We were just kidding ourselves. Two foolish kids with crazy dreams that could never come true.”

“I hope you’ll always be my friend,” I said.

“I will, but we’ll drift apart. It has to happen. We’re too far away from each other. It’s why Sofia knew she had to move there. Even if you two only end up as best of friends, that could only be true there. She made compromises I’m not sure I could ever make. Remember that, Steve.”

“I know. I struggle with my relationship with her because she’s given so much and it feels like I give so little.”

“You’re going to have to have this talk with her, too, Steve. There’s no way to avoid it. Well, that’s not true. You could marry her. But I think you’re either going to marry Bethany or some new girl you meet. That seems pretty clear at this point, and I suspect that Sofia knows it.”

“I suppose so. But that’s a problem for another day, I think. Do you plan to arrive on the 30th?” I asked.

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

Fender Bender Gender

Fender, Bender Gender by Suzanne Knight "Could I see your license and registration please Ma-am?" This would be the icing on the cake of an evening comprised of multiple layers of disappointment. I was approaching a green traffic light, when blue lights started to flash, I braked quickly but the driver behind didn't react...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

I was happy the announcement came early enough for me to be fully awake and clear my mind before the train arrived on the platform. January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. It didn’t look like it had been much of a contest, given that the score was 38-16, with San Francisco trouncing Miami. I grabbed a Coke and some chips and sat down on the couch next to Julia and Dave. In the room, besides my housemates, were Jamie, Kenneth, Kurt, Kathy, Jorge, George, Charlie, Bert, and Wen. “Julia, I got approval from both guys in Cincinnati,” I said. She...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 34 Friendship Needs No Words

June, 1983, Göteborg, Sweden The SAS DC-9 from Heathrow rolled out on the runway at Landvetter, bringing me back to Sweden for the second year in a row, and the third time overall. When the plane had taxied to the ramp and parked, the doors were opened and I grabbed my carry-on bag and headed off the plane and into the terminal. I found the baggage claim and after a short wait, collected my bags. I switched my brain into ‘Swedish’ mode and prepared to speak little or no English for several...

Colette In The Men8217s Toilet

Colette had no doubt that her husband Jacinto, loved her very dearly. She nevertheless knew that, in spite of his love, he liked to see her being abused and degraded. This being the case, she was understanding when her husband told her that he had arranged for her to be abused by two men that he’d met up with – something that they had done on previous occasions, but as Colette was to soon find out, never anything like what was about to take place. . The meeting was set up for that...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 51 Friends and Neighbors Part I

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. Other than me, all of you are white, nominally Christian, 20-year-old Americans. And you don’t invite me to your Sunday...

A WellLived Life Book 9 AnalaChapter 58 The Beginning of the End

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois On Monday morning after my usual routine of running, a shower, and breakfast, Kara, Sofia, and I got into my car to head to IIT. I let Sofia drive so that she could get the practice and she was grateful. We arrived a bit earlier than Kara and I needed to so that Sofia had time to make it to her 9:00am class at Loyola. Once she was safely on the El, Kara and I went to the student center to get some coffee. “Will Sofia be OK taking the El?” Kara asked. “She’s...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 38 Jennifer

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

A WellLived Life 3 Book 1 SuzanneChapter 7 Reaching the Peak

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 50 A Week in Chicago and a Girlfriends Birthday

March, 1982, Chicago, Illinois and Milford, Ohio I arrived at O’Hare airport about ten minutes before Stephie’s flight was due to land. I parked in the short-term lot and quickly made my way into the terminal. I checked the arrival board and then walked briskly to the gate. The Jetway door opened just as I walked up and a minute later, I saw Stephie. She dropped her carry-on bag and ran to me, leaping into my arms and wrapping her arms and legs around me. She kissed me hard, then released me...

Sins from my Stepmother Book 1 Ch 15

I My name is Teddy Carlson. I’m twenty-two years old and I fucked my stepmother. Not just once in some momentary lapse of judgement. But again and again…and again. Before you judge me, there’s a few things you need to understand. First, Dad and I never exactly got on like a house on fire. He was the CIO of a large hedge fund which meant that he wasn’t around much. He travelled to Europe regularly and commuted during the week to Manhattan for meetings. When he was home, he was either...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois At O’Hare, I parked in the short-term lot as I usually did and walked into the terminal. I checked the arrival board and saw that the flight from Atlanta was listed as on-time. I walked to security, passed through the metal detectors, and then walked to the gate. I sat down to await Stephie and, hopefully, some answers. The jet pulled onto the ramp and parked, and the engines shut down. The Jetway was extended and shortly after, the first passengers began to...

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. The Fender Bender a short story

I was creeping in Atlanta rush hour traffic, desperate to get home. It had been a long day. All I wanted was to get on my couch and watch ‘Blue Bloods’. It was sweltering hot, my car thermometer read ninety-eight degrees. I had the air condition on full blast. It didn’t really stop the sun from beating down on my skin. I was sick of the stop and go traffic on the connector. “Come on people.” I yelled, honking my horn. I had a major presentation at work and I didn’t think I did too well on...

Kimmy, Elyse, and I were reviewing the two completed pieces that she’d done as examples of what the series would look like. “You don’t like them?” Siobhán asked pensively. “No, I do! Why would you think I didn’t?” “Usually when someone says ‘interesting’ about abstract art it means they don’t like it.” “Sorry, in this case I meant it. Maybe ‘intriguing’ would have been a better word.” She...

The next afternoon John called a meeting of the band in the studio, he seemed extra happy about something. The concert the night before had been a—well the words 'complete success'—just doesn't start to cover what the night had been. However, by the end of the concert all the Anderson household, even the adults that were not on stage working, were pretty tired out. When they finally got home, everyone went straight to bed for once and ended up sleeping in late. Now, as all the kids...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

With everyone eating breakfast at the same time for once, Amy prepared the table in the dining room rather that the smaller kitchen table. As she saw the girls enter she said to Hannah, "So, you're on two legs today, I take it that means you'll be eating at the table with the rest rather than that dog bowl on the floor." October 31/November 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois When the song finished, Courtney simply walked away to join Jody, who was talking with Dale, one of the Navy guys. I decided it was time to talk to Tasha, so I grabbed a drink, and walked over to where she was standing. “Hi,” I said. “Hi,” she said, looking down. “Would you like to dance?” I asked. “I guess.” “You know what? Let’s take a walk instead,” I said. We left the attic room and went downstairs, then out the front door. I took...
