February, 1985, Chicago, Illinois

When the plane touched down at Meigs, I thanked Patrick Shaughnessy and said that I’d see him on the 16th. I walked to my car and fired up the engine. Before I backed out of the spot, I went over in my mind what I was going to say to Cindi when I saw her. I’d thought about the conversation during the flight back from Blue Ash, and had concluded that there was no way to avoid upsetting her.

I backed out of the parking spot carefully, then moved to first gear and slowly pulled away. I took Lake Shore Drive south to Hyde Park, and parked in the driveway by the coach house. I saw Patience through the window and we waved to each other. The girls had mostly kept to themselves this semester, only joining us once or twice on Saturday nights. The fling between Bert and Prudence seemed to have been short-lived, and he and Charlie were hanging out more and more together.

I took my bag to my room, saying ‘hello’ as I passed by to Julia, Dave, Katy, and Kenneth who were sitting in the great room. When I came back downstairs I found Cindi in the study room and asked her to come to my office to talk. She followed me and I shut the door behind us. We both sat down in wingback chairs.

“I’m just going to tell it straight. I can’t do it, Cindi. Having sex with an engaged woman is a line I simply can’t cross.”

She sighed, “I knew that was what you were going to say. But you gave me your word, Steve!”

“I did. And I was wrong to do that. I had the rule back then, as we discussed, and I foolishly pushed it aside. This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about it, either. I’ve struggled with the concept several times, but eventually just putting it off as something to worry about later. Now it’s later. Do you at least understand the bind that I’m in?”

“But what about my promise to my friends?” she asked.

“I’m not stopping you from keeping it, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if you should keep it. Think about what they’re asking you to do - to violate the faith Chris put in you by asking you to marry him. Is that the way to start off a relationship? By violating the trust before you even really get started? Is that how you want to define yourself? And what if Chris were to find out? Then what? You might well flush your entire relationship and your future happiness down the toilet for a meaningless fling. If I were you, I’d simply forget the deal with your friends.”

“And what do I tell them?”

“Nothing. Just don’t bring it up,” I said.

“They’ll ask,” she said.

“So? Lie to them if you have to, but I think you should tell them what I just told you about faith and trust. If they don’t agree, maybe you want a different class of friends. Could you see Elyse, Julia, Jackie, Katy, Kara, Stephie, or Sofia making that kind of pact? Or Jackie? Or Charlie or George?”

Cindi sighed, “No. I guess not.”

“And here’s the thing - how do you know that your friends will actually do it? Are you going to ask for evidence?”

“No, I suppose I’d just have to believe them.”

“This whole thing sounds like something a bunch of teenagers would cook up when they were drunk, high, or both.”

Cindi laughed, “We might have been smoking pot.”

“Might?” I said with an arched eyebrow.

“OK. We WERE smoking pot!” she laughed again.

“Cindi, if circumstances were different, and it was Dave you were going to marry, do you think I would have done it?”

She was silent for a minute, “No, you wouldn’t have. Just like you wouldn’t violate Kurt’s trust.”

“I couldn’t do that to Chris, either. He’s not as close as those two are. They’re my two best guy friends, though Pete’s close. He’s just too straitlaced for me to be as open with him as I am with Kurt, or to a slightly lesser extent, Dave.”

And that reminded me that I hadn’t talked to Josh Richards in a LONG time. Nor Mary Harrison for that matter. I made a quick mental note to call them as soon as I could.

“I suppose I should have taken the chance when I had it before I got engaged. From what I hear, I’m missing out on something pretty special.”

“No, Cindi. You’re getting something special - Chris. And his love for you. And that beats the hell out of a one-night-stand.”

She smirked, “True. And here I was looking forward to a tit-fuck where you came on my face.”

I groaned, “That’s fighting dirty!”

She smiled, “You can have me right now if you want. No rings yet.”

“But he asked. And you said yes. And despite the extreme discomfort I’m experiencing at the moment, it’ll have to remain a fantasy.”

She got up and carefully sat in my lap, then cupped her hand around my erection.

“So THAT’s what it’s like at full mast. Nice!”

She gave me a soft kiss then got up.

“Thanks for letting me off the hook so easily,” I said.

“When you put it in terms of trust and faith, it kind of hit home. I wouldn’t want Chris to do to me what I was going to do to him.”

“That’s perhaps the best way to think about it. If you wouldn’t like it done to you, don’t do it to someone else.”

I stood up and we hugged tightly.

“You’re a good man, Steve. One of these girls is going to be very, very lucky someday.”

“Chris is lucky too, Cindi.”

She left the office and I picked up the phone to call some old friends in Columbus, Ohio.

“I thought you’d fallen off the face of the earth!” Mary said when I said hello.

“I owe you a huge apology for not keeping in touch. How are things going?”

“I’m finishing my Junior year, and Josh is finishing his Sophomore. We’ve managed to take a bunch of classes together with me in political science and him in international relations. How are you doing?”

“Getting ready to graduate!” I said, then continued. “I was in Milford this weekend visiting Bethany.”

“How is she? We heard through the grapevine about her accident. You should have called us!”

“I know. As crazy as it was, I had my sister make all the calls for me. I should have had her call you directly. But Bethany is doing OK, she’s recovering pretty much on schedule.”

“Are you going to be in Milford this summer at all?” Mary asked.

“In June for Kurt and Kathy’s wedding, and then probably in August, for a wedding between my friends Dave and Julia. Otherwise, probably not. I’m starting my new company once school is out.”

“Maybe Josh and I will visit you in Chicago. He’s wanted to see Sofia since she moved to Chicago last summer. What if we came up during Spring Break?”

“You’re more than welcome. I take it things are going really well between you?”

“He gets fucked within an inch of his life anytime he wants,” she declared mirthfully. “What do you think?”

“I was thinking more about everything else. There really was no doubt about that with you!”

“We could play chess when we’re there,” she teased.

“You know my rule quite well, Mary.”

“Oh poo!” she giggled.

“Just let me know when you guys will be here. I’ll make sure the guest room is free.”

“Our break is the week before Easter. Is that when yours is?”

“Yes. Jennifer will be here, too.”

“Oh cool. So you guys are still working on things?”

“It’s complicated. We can explain when you’re here! Say ‘hi’ to Josh for me.”

“Will do. See you in a month or so!”

We hung up and I took the disk with my paper on in from my bag, put it in the computer and printed out a copy of my paper, then headed up to bed, accompanied by Kara. After we made love, we cuddled and she asked about Bethany.

“She’s doing better,” I said. “In fact, I’d say she’s pretty much back to her old self. She’s planning on coming to Chicago mid-April so she can be closer to Madison than she is in Milford. She doesn’t want to go back to the dorms, which I understand. And given that she’s moving here in May, she thought it was best just to come here, then drive up to Madison for her project review with her professors.”

“Cool,” Kara said. “I guess she’ll stay in one of the guest rooms until we switch all the rooms around?”

“That’s the plan,” I agreed. “Once Patience and Prudence move out of the guest house, Stephanie, Jennifer, and Josie will move in there. Cindi will move in with Chris once she graduates. I think that Katy will move in with Kenneth as soon as she graduates, so we’ll be able to rearrange the rooms. I just need to find out if George and Charlie are confirmed.”

“They were both talking about it today like it’s a done deal with their parents.”

“Cool. Everything is coming together then. It’s just a matter of finishing school and making the road trip to get Jennifer and Josie.”

“Is someone going with you on that long drive to California?”

“Stephanie, most likely. She’s moving here the day after she graduates, which is the same day as our commencement here. It’s a real dilemma for me as to which one to go to.”

“Are you kidding?” Kara said, looking askance. “You can’t miss your commencement ceremony! All your friends will be there!”

“And my sister won’t. And how about my dad? That’s a heck of a choice for him to make.”

“What time is hers?” Kara asked.

“7:00pm at Riverfront Coliseum, why?” I asked.

“Your commencement is at 11:30am. Why don’t you ask the guy who flies you back and forth to bring your dad and sister, they come to your commencement, then you fly back to Milford to go to hers, and then he brings you back.”

I laughed, “I hadn’t even considered it. I’ll ask Mr. Shaughnessy when I see him in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the idea!”

“You’re welcome, Snuggle Bear. Would it be OK for me to invite some new friends next weekend?”

“Absolutely. Freshmen?”

“One. Elizabeth, who everyone calls Effy, and her brother Tony. And their friends Sid and Cassie.”

“What are their majors?”

“Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, and Biology.”

“Where’d you meet them?”

“I met Effy in chemistry class. She’s the Freshman. The other three are Juniors. All four of them are from Bristol, Tennessee. Effy and I have lunch together on Tuesdays.”

“Cool. You know that you don’t have to ask to invite friends over, right?”

“Sure, but four at once seemed like a lot. That’s why I asked.”

“We’ve had some people stop coming regularly. I haven’t seen Jamal at all this semester, not even on campus. I’m going to see if I can track him down. He was closest to Stephie so I wonder if her not being here discouraged him from coming. He wasn’t a regular, but we used to see him every few weeks.”

“How will it work in the fall with no study room?” she asked.

“I was going to put a couple of desks in the far end of the great room, next to the doors that open to the back yard. If people need computers, that’s a bit trickier, but we’ll work something out. I can set up the Apple II and TRS-80 in the great room as well. It’s not like there isn’t enough room. If people want to socialize, they can use the basement, attic room, sunroom, or the backyard. It’ll work out.”

“It’s going to be even crazier here, isn’t it?”

I chuckled, “Yes, but that’s the way it seems to be around me. Dave and Julia will move out, once we get the business off the ground. And Charlie and George graduate next year. Things will start to calm down then, I think.”

“Until you start having your kids!” Kara teased. “I could stop taking my birth control pills if you want!”

“Not yet, Honey. You have three years of school to go just for your undergrad degree, and then grad school.”

“I can manage a baby and school. But not just yet. You need to graduate and get the business started so you can support all your wives and kids!”

I laughed hard, “What am I, an Arab sheik?”

“As long as I’m in your harem, that’s fine with me!” she giggled.

I pulled her close and we fell asleep with Kara snuggled in my arms.

March, 1985, Chicago, Illinois

Mercifully I had a quiet week at work and school - no drama, no lawyers, no new scandals, and no problems. By Friday morning I was feeling calm and relaxed. I hadn’t felt so relaxed since before Christmas, and it was nice to not be stressed. I couldn’t say the same for Friday afternoon. For some reason, my upcoming date with Jessica was making me antsy.

I wasn’t completely sure why that was. There was something different about her that I couldn’t put my finger on. It wasn’t her strong personality - I was around girls like that all the time. It wasn’t that she was outrageously beautiful - Kara still held that crown and probably always would, short of a super-model showing up at my door, which wasn’t likely. It wasn’t that she was intelligent - Beth Pater was probably the smartest person I knew and she could easily give Jessica a run for her money. It wasn’t her drive - most of the girls I hung out with all were overachievers in some way. But there was something very special about Jessica.

I finished my last class and spent a few minutes talking to Wen. She had some questions about the assignment for our microcomputer class and wanted some help. I let her know that I’d be around the next two weekends, so we could work on it at my house.

“I might want to check out your Macintosh, if you don’t mind,” she said as we parted.

“I think that can be arranged,” I replied with a smile, knowing that meant, at a minimum, she wanted to make out.

The exchange with Wen lightened my mood as I walked to my car to head home to change. Jessica and I we weren’t meeting until 6:00pm, so I could even get in a quick shower. As I drove south along Michigan Avenue I began mentally preparing myself for the verbal sparring match that was sure to come. It dawned on me that perhaps that was what was different. It wasn’t a ‘what’ it was a ‘how’. The more I thought about, the more I was sure that’s what was simultaneously exciting and threatening. I felt with her that every sentence I spoke could take the relationship in a different direction, and some of those directions would lead to dead-ends.

I parked in the driveway, walked into the house and went straight up to my room. Nobody was cooking dinner because everyone was going out and the house would be empty until at least 10:00pm. I took a quick shower, dressed in black slacks and a royal blue polo, grabbed my jacket and black fedora, then walked out to the car for the drive to Connie’s on 26th street. When I arrived, I parked in the same lot and walked inside and got a table, leaving my name and Jessica’s name with the hostess.

Jessica arrived a few minutes before 6:00pm wearing a steel gray skirt and a navy blue sweater. I saw her walk in and stood up as the hostess brought her to the table. I moved to pull her chair out for her, and after she sat down, I went back to my seat.

“A perfect gentleman,” she said. “How are you?”

“Just fine. And you?”

“School’s insane, but I’m sure you knew that. You’re ready to graduate, right?”

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 21 He Will Tell Thee What Thou Shalt Do

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

Home for Horny Monsters Book FourChapter 12 Shocking Developments

Mike stared at the piece of paper in front of him, then looked up. Jenny stood on the other side of the paper, holding a large pencil in both hands. She was tapping her foot impatiently. He sighed. “How about W?” Jenny drew the last leg on the hanging stick figure, then drew an X over each of his eyes. He heard a distant cackle come from all around the room, and she dropped her pencil. He scrutinized the puzzle before him and then looked at her. Somehow, despite guessing all the vowels,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 1 BethanyChapter 6 May You Live in Interesting Times

March 7th, 1986, Chicago, Illinois “I don’t THINK so!” Jessica laughed when Kara told her about Penny’s request. “Why not?” Kara asked. “It’s not like they haven’t been together before.” “That’s true,” Jessica replied. “But Steve’s little friend has designs beyond just getting herself screwed silly. And that’s a big red flag.” “Not to mention the fact that she works for my company,” I said. “So you didn’t put her up to this?” Jessica asked. I chuckled, “No way. I’ve known that Penny...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

The Three Signs Book 4 LisaChapter 6 Developments

Back at Uni for the start of second semester, it was a mix of déjà vu (the introductory lectures for Computing I and the programming clinic) brand new things (the three subjects I was taking this term), and more of the same (back into the thesis project). This was now the third semester I had given the introductory Computing I lecture; I had it all down pretty pat. We had a large number of students wanting to do the Programming Clinic; I am sure most of them heard from the second year...

January, 1985, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back in Hyde Park about ten minutes before the end of the Super Bowl. It didn’t look like it had been much of a contest, given that the score was 38-16, with San Francisco trouncing Miami. I grabbed a Coke and some chips and sat down on the couch next to Julia and Dave. In the room, besides my housemates, were Jamie, Kenneth, Kurt, Kathy, Jorge, George, Charlie, Bert, and Wen. “Julia, I got approval from both guys in Cincinnati,” I said. She...

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. I My name is Teddy Carlson. I’m twenty-two years old and I fucked my stepmother. Not just once in some momentary lapse of judgement. But again and again…and again. Before you judge me, there’s a few things you need to understand. First, Dad and I never exactly got on like a house on fire. He was the CIO of a large hedge fund which meant that he wasn’t around much. He travelled to Europe regularly and commuted during the week to Manhattan for meetings. When he was home, he was either...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 20 It Happened One Night

January 17, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “What time do you have to leave this morning?” Kara asked as we showered together on Tuesday morning. “About 8:30am,” I said. “I’m driving over to get Jeri, then heading to O’Hare. We have an 11:00am flight. Assuming all goes well, we’ll be in the office by 3:00pm Pacific time. We’ll spend a couple hours going over the software then go to dinner. The demo is tomorrow. Our flight back on Thursday leaves LA at 11:00am, so we’ll be home by 8:00pm, I...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 79 The Last Risk Of Freeze

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 23 Very Interesting

November 2, 1991, Chicago, Illinois “Is Chris coming tonight?” Kara asked. “I doubt it,” I said. “He hasn’t shown up for anything since Cindi left him. And she’s doing the traditional ‘masquerade ball’ mask. Nothing more. She’ll leave William with April and Sarah.” “That’s a heck of a change from last year!” “I think she’s thinking she might have pushed things too far,” I said. “I don’t! She went to the door naked with me! She might regret the problem with Chris, but not with her costume...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 16 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I went to my room, closed the door and dialed my old number in Milford and Stephanie answered. “Hi, Stephanie!” “Hey, Big Bro! How’s Chicago?” “Pretty good. A lot of stuff is happening. But I have a favor to ask. Well, really, it’s a favor from Ed. I’m coming home this weekend and I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to the apartment.” “You and Kara? On Saturday? I’m sure the answer is yes. Where are you staying?” “I was going to call Mrs. Spencer...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 6 SamanthaChapter 20 Get Thee to a Nunnery

September 4, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “These are really interesting pieces,” I said to Siobhán. Kimmy, Elyse, and I were reviewing the two completed pieces that she’d done as examples of what the series would look like. “You don’t like them?” Siobhán asked pensively. “No, I do! Why would you think I didn’t?” “Usually when someone says ‘interesting’ about abstract art it means they don’t like it.” “Sorry, in this case I meant it. Maybe ‘intriguing’ would have been a better word.” She...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

August 15, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Whoa!” Cynthia declared, as she turned the pages in The New Joy of Sex. “All these positions! I want to try them!” She was paging through the section of the book which had lots of illustrations. “Wait!” she gasped, as she turned the page. “Bondage? Whoa! He has her tied to the bed!” “That might be fun,” I grinned. “And then I can tie YOU to the bed?” she asked with a silly smirk. “I suppose turn-about is fair play.” “And threesomes?” “That might not...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

February 16, 1997, Chicago, Illinois Our conversation during the Rap Session was about how to find ‘truth’ and both Elizabeth and I made a strong case for skepticism as the best approach to life. “But if you don’t believe anything is true, how can you decide what to do?” Brenna asked after a lengthy discussion about how to know what was true. “Remember what we said about listening carefully?” Elizabeth asked. “We operate as if the things we’ve come to believe actually are true, but always...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

Jessica giggled, “I set the alarm for thirty minutes earlier!” “Then let’s not waste any of it!” I said pulling Kara to me. Kara’s squeals as I plunged...
