October 27, 1996, Chicago, Illinois

“Dad!” seven screaming voices exclaimed.

I dropped my bags and crouched down and was rushed by three little girls, while their brothers more nonchalantly walked towards me. Everyone got hugs, and the girls got kisses on their foreheads. When they’d all had their turn I stood up.

“Hi, Tiger!”

“Hi, Snuggle Bear!”

“Hello, lovely wives!”

I took them both in my arms and we held a three-way hug, each of us kissing the other two once, and then doing our three-way kiss.

I released them and held my arms out for Maria Cristina who came over and melted against me.

“I missed you,” she said, and we exchanged a soft kiss.

Elyse, Jennifer, Josie, Samantha, and Stephanie all got hugs, and I shook hands with Brian, Eduardo, and Ed.

“I want to take a quick shower,” I said. “And start some laundry. And then I need a few minutes with Samantha, if my lovely wives and her handsome husband don’t mind.”

Everyone laughed.

“I’ll start your laundry, Dad,” Birgit said. “Ashley will help.”

“OK, Pumpkin.”

“Jesse!” Birgit ordered. “Carry the big bag, please!”

I chuckled, “Now I KNOW I’m home.”

Jesse rolled his eyes and followed orders, helping his two sisters take my bags to the washer while my wives followed me upstairs. I quickly stripped off my clothes and got into the warm shower while my wives leaned against the sink and watched.

“Are your batteries recharged?” Jessica asked.

“Absolutely. I’ll give you all the details later. Maria Cristina is going to have to forgo her night tonight. I’ll talk to her about it.”

“You have that much to tell?”

I nodded, “It was a wonderful two weeks, I had some very good talks with the counselor and met a lot of really nice people. I basically forgot what ‘small-town’ America was like, and it gave me some serious insights into the culture wars that are starting in earnest.”

“And?” Kara asked with an arched eyebrow.

“Later!” I chuckled. “I need to talk with Samantha and we’ll be here forever if I start the story now! I want to give you my full, undivided attention.”

“Ooh!” Kara squealed. “I love it when you do that!”

“She’s been impossible this whole week, Tiger. She’s suffering withdrawal symptoms!”

“You have no room to talk, Miss ‘God do I need to be fucked hard’!” Kara said primly.

I chuckled, “I promise to fulfill my husbandly duties to the utmost! But AFTER I talk with Samantha and spend some time with the Munchkins.”

I quickly finished my shower, dried off, and dressed. We went downstairs, I got myself a San Pellegrino from the fridge, added some lime juice, then went to find Samantha. With Brian’s agreement, she and I went into my office and sat side by side in two leather chairs.

“So?” I asked.

“Between us, the FBI, and Treasury, we’ve found most of the money. They were smart, but not smart enough. I think they got cocky and that made them a bit careless.”

“How much?”

“Just north of $150 million between them. There’s probably another $50 million in the Gulf States which we can’t touch so far.”

“And your dad?”

“He’s there, for sure, along with Matheson. But Dad apparently befriended one of the sheiks when they met in London in the 80s, so at the moment he has governmental protection.”

“Foulkes and Monroe?”

“Under surveillance. They surfaced in Istanbul. The FBI asked the Turkish police to just track them, not pick them up. They’re in Abu Dhabi at the moment. The FBI is hoping they lead them to where my dad and Matheson are hiding out. Right now, the sheiks have ‘plausible deniability’ because the FBI can’t say ‘Noel Spurgeon is at the Grand Hotel’ or whatever.”

“But they have to know the Feds have the money.”

“It wasn’t seized. Treasury put traps on all the accounts with the banks. They’re allowing nominal transfers but won’t allow large ones. Nobody has tried to make a large one, yet. When they do, then Treasury and the FBI have to decide if it’s better to stop it or let it go through. Honestly, they should have done what I’m sure you planned - Russia. They’d never cooperate with us.”

“No comment,” I grinned.

“Even with the anti-surveillance stuff here?”

“Even with. I have no idea what you might be talking about.”

“Uh-huh,” she laughed. “Anyway, they have all the warrants and everything they need to get Foulkes, Monroe, and Foulkes’ wife. And they seized Monroe’s unmonitored account. He was sneakier. He used a complete fake identity. He got a birth certificate of a kid who was born the same year but died at age five.”

“The perfect ploy if you parlay that to a driver’s license.”

“Exactly. And then a passport. That’s ultimately how they got him. When they found his offshore account, they traced the transfers through several hops and landed on a large private trading account in another name. It took some legwork, but given Treasury is expecting to pull in around $200 million, they aren’t sparing any expenses. Not to mention whatever huge fine we negotiate to make this all go away.”

“Blame Matheson?”

“And Foulkes and Monroe. We’re negotiating now, but they’re being pricks about no guilty plea from the firm and no admission of firm liability. I’m fine with hanging the assholes out to dry, but they did this on their own hook. The thing is, we’ll win, because they know they can’t get us on anything as a firm, and the last thing they want to do is lose a case in court. And you know I have the money to fight them.”

“I think you have more disposable cash on hand than they do, but sadly, they have printing presses and the right to print more fiat currency.”

“Tell me about it,” she said, shaking her head. “Cowry shells were better because they were rare and you had to expend significant effort to get them, just like gold. That prevents an insane expansion of the money supply. Now? Fuckin-A, just turn on the printing presses and watch a pound of butter go from its historic price of a nickel to $3.00!”

“You’re preaching to the hard money choir,” I grinned. “How long before you settle?”

“I figure I’ll win the staring contest in a week or so.”

“How is Keri working out?”

“It’s only been a week, but Stephanie is happy. I know you trained Keri well, so I’m quite sure things will work out fine. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t have hired her! How did your sessions with the coach go?”

“He’s an ex-Marine. His basic refrain was ‘suck it up and deal with it’!”

Samantha laughed, “I know the type. Brian has some Marine officer friends. To them, any solution that doesn’t involve fully-automatic weapons, grenades, artillery, and close air support isn’t worth considering.”

“They are ‘shock troops’ when used properly,” I chuckled. “Anyway, he turned my words around on me and told me to ‘manage my team’ and let my subordinates do the same.”

“Wait! You do that!”

“With one notable exception,” I replied.

“Your veto! That is kind of an anomaly. I only talk to the most senior people we hire, not the assistants, secretaries, mail room guys, or whatever. But then again, we have something like eight times your staff.”

“He was pretty adamant that my problem was trying to be best friends with everyone, or at least close cousins, and my veto reinforced that in MY mind, but didn’t do anything for those new hires and their view of me. It’s basically the first change I need to make.”

“And then?”

“Mostly changing attitudes. I’m not going to destroy my relationships with people like Penny or John in Pittsburgh, but I can’t count on having many of those, if any, except in the executive suite.”

“It was different for me because I had NO friends when I took over, so I had to build the relationships I needed, and do so carefully. Who is that going to affect?”

“In the end? Me. Obviously Mario, Barbara, and Zeke are executives in the sense the coach meant it, along with Charlie, Kimmy, Deborah, Julia, Cindi, and Elyse. There are a few others, too, like Eve and Terry. And Dave when he comes back. But ultimately, some of those will diminish when Stephanie comes on board. I have to truly cede power to her, or we’ll both be frustrated.”

“And you’ll be dead and I can have her back!” Samantha smirked.

“You just focus on Keri, my young mentee!”

“Somebody got their brains fucked out by nubile young women during his two weeks away!”

“Is it that obvious?” I grinned.

“You haven’t been this loose and relaxed since Saint Martin!”

“I did have an enjoyable time there!”

“I invited several of them to the Halloween Party next Friday.”

“Cool.”

“You’ll think it’s more than cool, I’m sure.”

“Oh?”

“Liz and her boyfriend broke up. She said she would LOVE to ‘adult’ with you, if you’re interested.”

“What happened?” I asked.

“He wanted to get married as soon as she finished her undergrad degree and have some kids. She wants to go to law school first. They’d discussed it, and she made that clear. A few weeks later he showed up with a ring. She refused because she knew clearly what he wanted, and she only saw it turning into a disaster.”

“That’s actually very mature,” I said.

“I think the problem, really, was that he doesn’t want a wife who makes more than he does. Remember, he’s a state employee and if she signs on with any decently-sized firm, she’ll make double what he does as a first-year associate. And she’s smart enough that you know she’ll get several good offers. After that, the sky is the limit.”

I nodded, “She’s an extremely intelligent young woman. You know my rule about committing to something like that, but I promise I’ll dance with her and we’ll take it from there.”

Samantha laughed, “The one woman with big tits that you truly loved!”

“Nah, there was one other. A girl named Debbie when I was in High School. And you know Cindi and I love each other!”

“Yeah, but you two never quite got there!”

“True. I forgot how much you and I talked about stuff like that.”

“Those were good talks. They gave me a lot of insight into you, and a lot of insight into other people as well. I don’t think I’d be the woman I am today without that evening in the barn and everything that came after it.”

“I could have done without the jailbreak.”

“Yeah, but that wasn’t your fault nor was it my fault. You gave the fucking Feds everything on a platter and they fucked it up worse than if I’d given it to a security guard on his first day at Spurgeon and let him deal with it!”

“There is that,” I said. “Did you hear anything more about Stone and O’Toole?”

“Gone.”

“Fired?”

“Reassigned. Stone to Reno and O’Toole to, get this, Anchorage.”

I chuckled, “The desert and Alaska. Somebody was VERY unhappy.”

“I talked to the Deputy AG and ‘unhappy’ is not the word I would use. ‘Pissed’ is more like it, but even that’s not strong enough. They literally KNEW what my dad was going to pull and let him do it. Honestly, they’re lucky the AG thinks they’re just incompetent.”

“Payoff?”

“Think about it.”

“Yeah, that would make sense. I guess there’s no evidence of that?”

“Neither of them is horribly in debt, nor do they gamble, their kids are in good colleges, but not outrageously expensive ones. They both drive midrange Fords. Their wives have good jobs. No evidence of any kind of payoff or anything out of the ordinary in their lifestyles.”

“The Feds told you that?”

“No, your friends Patrick and Katya. I did my OWN investigation because ‘incompetence’ just smelled like ‘cover-up’ to me. It was, but not the way I thought.”

“Hide them in plain sight but don’t make a big deal about it because it would besmirch the DOJ.”

“Bingo. That’s why I was suspicious, but honestly, there is less than nothing. Those two FBI guys have lives as boring as watching paint dry! I think I’d kill myself if my life were that boring!”

“And yet, for some people, that’s just how they like it.”

“Not us, Steve. That’s not who we are.”

“No, it’s not.”

We got up, hugged, and rejoined the rest of the family. I spent time with the kids before they had to go to bed, then had a quiet talk with Maria Cristina, promising her Monday night, then went upstairs with my wives.

“Sex or story first?” I asked.

“Tiger, if I’m not half unconscious in the next thirty minutes, YOU will be unconscious!”

“And to think you were saying it was Kara who needed it badly.”

“I don’t EVER do this, but I’m claiming state authority to go first!”

I chuckled, “And you know MY take on state authority!”

“Just shut up and fuck me, Tiger!”

I did. And then Kara. And then the three of us fucked each other. We took a shower, changed the sheets, and climbed back into bed.

“I have a proposal,” I said.

“We’re already married, you oaf!” Kara said with a soft laugh.

“What would you say if we had a live-in housekeeper? Someone to clean, cook, do laundry, and handle the kids in the afternoon? Not as a nanny, but just as an adult in the house, so to speak.”

“Where did you get that idea?” Jessica asked.

“If you think about how much juggling we do around trying to have dinner on the table at a reasonable hour, and do all the stuff around the house, I think it makes sense. Honestly, wouldn’t you rather spend time on your days off doing stuff OTHER than cleaning or laundry or whatever?”

“He does make a good point,” Kara replied. “Let me guess, you have someone in mind.”

“Indeed I do. And unless you object, she’ll visit in about three weeks to meet you two and the other moms, and be interviewed by the people who actually run this house.”

“Jesse and Birgit!” Jessica responded.

“Exactly!”

“And this young woman?” Kara asked. “Another satisfied customer?”

“I’m making a unilateral decree,” I replied. “You BOTH have wifely privileges, with the exception of Maria Cristina, whom we need to talk about. BUT, you have to tell me you want the gory details!”

“I do! I do!” Kara exclaimed happily.

“You hussy!” Jessica retorted, but then she laughed. “Me too!”

“So, for my trip, the ‘body count’ was three, two of whom were virgins. And, Kara, you’ll love this, one was the eighteen-year-old daughter of the local Baptist pastor!”

“No way!” Kara laughed.

“Oh, yes way. And in true Kent van der Meer fashion, he suspected something and confronted me about it. That led to a very interesting afternoon and evening with a cute, thirty-one-year-old Sheriff’s deputy and her handcuffs! She was the non-virgin.”

“And the housekeeper, or whatever you want to call her, is the pastor’s daughter?”

“No, her friend, Winter, who, by the way, has sisters named Summer and Autumn.”

“Seriously?” Jessica replied.

“Seriously! And the sisters’ housemate is named Brooke. Which, spelled without the ‘e’ is another word for a ‘spring’. I met them and they made quattro stagioni pizza. I’m sure you can imagine the jokes I made about sampling all four seasons!”

“You’re SO bad, Tiger!”

“None of them had their tests, so it ended up as a lot of fun teasing and innuendo. Anyway, I met Winter the first night I was there, and after a talk with Abbie and one with Bethany, I decided to take Elyse’s advice. Winter got the entire round-the-world treatment, plus a very rare thing for me.”

“What?” Jessica asked.

Kara laughed, “The thing he can do with me but not you! The thing Cindi always teases him about!”

“Yes,” I grinned. “After that, she stayed with me for the entire two weeks. Towards the end of the first week, her friend Vickie, the pastor’s daughter, came to the door of the motel and asked if that was where the sex lessons were given.”

“I swear, Tiger, if you wrote to Penthouse, NOBODY would believe your TRUE stories!”

“Tell me about it! Anyway, she got her lessons, though she declined the around-the-world tour and she was smaller than you, Jess.”

“At least SOMEBODY is,” Jessica growled.

“Oh, PULEEEZE!” Kara snorted. “You know darned well he prefers yours to mine. And even Loki doesn’t know why!”

“She came back for seconds the following Wednesday, which led to the Saturday encounter with the Deputy. I was questioned, but Vickie denied straight up that I’d raped her, and since she was eighteen, that was the end of it. Deputy Nelson, Emmy is her given name, and I flirted and I invited her to stop by when her shift was over. We had a glass of bourbon, she confirmed she’d had her test...”

“Of COURSE she did,” Kara said, barely able to say the words because she was laughing. “That ALWAYS works out for you!”

“It turns out her best friend’s older brother is an ER doc and he was also Emmy’s first. He insisted everyone get tested starting around 1986, shortly after he began his second year of medical school. He was insistent with Emmy because she’s been scratched and cut and had people puke in her cruiser and spit on her and bleed all over.”

“That’s the same thing Bethany tells the cops and firefighters,” Jessica replied. “It’s just safer to get tested than find out too late you were infected by some perp or patient and passed it on to a loved one.”

“The other two had theirs, too, of course,” Kara replied.

“Of course. Winter when she went to get birth control pills before her wedding and Vickie because the lab offered when she was there with Winter.”

“Wedding?”

“It never happened,” I replied. “She was engaged to her High School sweetheart who enlisted in the Marines right out of High School. He was supposed to come home after Parris Island for the wedding. He didn’t, got orders to Japan, and wrote her what I guess you would call a ‘Dear Jane’ letter. I jokingly offered to have JAG court-martial the guy, but she declined. Later on, I found out he was the grandson of Bill Ivarstad, the coach I was meeting. Bill is a retired Marine as is his son. And his son works for Patrick.”

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life Book 4 BethanyChapter 27 Homecoming

September/October 1980, Milford, Ohio On Sunday after I called Karin, I had my weekly ‘play date’ with Debbie V, and she helped me pick out a gift for Karin, as her birthday was coming up and I wanted to send it so she could get it in time. I spent the rest of the day with Beth, working on computer dating and programming stuff. Bethany had come over for a few hours in the afternoon and hung out with us. I also let Beth know that the following Sunday we’d only have a short day because I had a...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 63 Back to Work

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

August 19, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Seriously?! Argh!!” Jessica complained. The arrivals’ board at O’Hare had just changed to say Kara’s flight was delayed by forty minutes over the short delay they’d had leaving San Francisco. “How does that even happen?” she asked. “They took off about ten minutes late, but they’re flying east, with the tailwind!” “A combination of air traffic, a landing slot, and gate availability,” I replied. “I’ve had a lot of good luck, but when it goes wrong, it...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. With our expansion, it was in more or less regular use, and that meant I didn’t have access to it as often as I would have liked. I was glad there had been a delay in...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

July 22, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “Albert, do you have everything packed?” Mom asked. “Yes, Mom!” I replied, rolling my eyes because she’d asked before I went to bed. “He’ll be fine, Babe,” Dad said. “Let’s walk to the hospital.” I usually didn’t get up early, but Dad had suggested it would help Mom if I walked to the hospital with her because I was leaving to see Jane for three weeks. May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 9 KamiChapter 38 And Sometimes It Stinks To Be Big

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I went to my room, closed the door and dialed my old number in Milford and Stephanie answered. “Hi, Stephanie!” “Hey, Big Bro! How’s Chicago?” “Pretty good. A lot of stuff is happening. But I have a favor to ask. Well, really, it’s a favor from Ed. I’m coming home this weekend and I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to the apartment.” “You and Kara? On Saturday? I’m sure the answer is yes. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. December, 1981, Milford, Ohio On Sunday, after swimming and having breakfast with Stephanie, I called Karin, and then Stephanie and I hung out until lunch. I had let Kara know that I was going to Don Joseph’s, so I wouldn’t see her. After eating lunch, I called Stephie to see how she was doing. Things were fine at home and she was hanging out with Red and Rose, plus seeing her other friends from High School. Daryl had called her, but she wasn’t going to see him. “I miss you, Yankee. A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. July 1983, Milford, Ohio My drive to Ohio was filled with wild swings of emotion. After quickly driving Anala home I had set out for Milford, driving as fast as I thought I could get away with, slowing only when warned to do so by my radar detector. I’d told Nancy that I’d come straight to her house and asked her to call my dad and let him know so that Stephanie wasn’t worried. I pulled into the Blanchards’ driveway at 3:30pm, having managed to avoid any run-ins with the Indiana State Police...
