July 30, 1997, aboard an Aeroflot flight to Saint Petersburg, Russia

As we boarded our flight, Natalie had asked for permission to sit with me, and her parents had granted it. I wondered exactly what they thought, but there was no reasonable way to find out without creating potential problems for Natalie. Our seats were in front of her parents’ seats, which meant we’d be able to talk quietly without being overheard, due to the usual sound level in a cruising aircraft.

“When did you finally get back to the hotel last night?” she asked.

“Just after midnight. I’m sorry if you were waiting for me.”

“I figured you were going to be late. I checked about 11:00pm and then went to bed. I’m not upset.”

“Thanks for understanding.”

“Why did you call me ‘Grasshopper’ the other night?”

“It’s from a TV show from the early 70s called Kung Fu. In it, Master Po called his young student ‘Grasshopper’. It’s something a teacher says to a student when they ask a question because the reference in the TV show was to the student asking the master a question about a grasshopper.”

“So it’s a show about karate?”

“It’s a show about philosophy. It’s trying to teach lessons similar to the ones you’ve asked me to teach you.”

“So how DO you prepare for things you don’t know much about?”

“Have you thought about that question?”

“Yes.”

“Then what’s the answer?”

“I asked you because I didn’t know!”

“What makes you think I know?” I asked.

“But...”

“What did I say?”

“That we’d have to talk about it another time because it was late.”

“And that was because there isn’t a simple answer. In one sense, you can think about the things that will happen, and how you might respond to them, but you can’t know for sure how you will respond to something which has never happened before. But it’s complicated by the fact that you might let that lack of knowledge paralyze you and lead you to never do anything.”

“You’re confusing me!”

“Think about something you’ve never done, like driving a car. How do you prepare for that?”

“You take driver’s ed.”

“So you sit in a classroom and they tell you stuff and talk about what to expect and how to react and so on. But then what happens? You walk out, get in the car, and they tell you to drive. You’ve never driven, you’ve only ever talked about it. But they expect you to drive. And guess what, most people do OK. That said, you aren’t completely prepared because you haven’t actually encountered the issues, and you haven’t had to react. But you can think about what you might do.

“They start you out slow, perhaps in a parking lot, or something like that to get you used to turning the wheel and using the gas and brake pedals. As you become comfortable, they take you on quiet streets, then busier streets, then on the freeway. Each thing builds on the previous one. So even if you don’t know the exact thing that might happen, you learn ways to deal with things that do happen.”

“So, like with math where you learn to count, then add, then multiply, then learn geometry and algebra.”

“Yes, though driving isn’t nearly so predictable as math. The lesson is, that the way to solve a big problem or to answer a difficult question, is to break things down into simpler parts, and see if you can solve those parts. If not, you try to break those down further. And maybe you don’t have answers for everything, but you should have enough information to make reasoned decisions. And that’s your goal - to make reasoned decisions, though it’s not always possible.”

“Why?”

“Sometimes, like when you’re driving, you simply have to react to events which occur around you. And there are other things in life which are like that, where you’ll be driven by emotions. The more you’ve thought about things in advance, the less likely they are to get out of hand.”

“You’re talking about sex, right?”

“That’s one thing, for sure. But emotions can lead you to do things which you otherwise might not do. The tricky part is to allow yourself enough room for spontaneity without being out of control. And to properly evaluate the risk of the things you’re going to do. And to make plans in advance when you are going to do something which could lead you to make a huge mistake.”

“Like?”

“Let’s say you’re old enough to drink and you’re at a party. You drove yourself there and have to drive home. Should you drink?”

“Obviously not.”

“It’s obvious sitting here on a plane flying over Russia, but what if everyone is drinking and they want you to drink with them.”

“Peer pressure?”

“It can make you do things unless you are determined not to do them. So what do you do?”

“If you want to drink, have a ride. If you drive, you can’t drink.”

“Exactly. That’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. Do your best not to put yourself in a difficult position because you failed to think about it in advance.”

“Thanks for answering the question.”

“You’re welcome.”

“What are we doing when we get to Saint Petersburg?”

“Checking into the hotel and then having dinner. The first game is tomorrow afternoon.”

“You don’t mind if I come talk to you tonight?”

“No, I don’t mind.”

“Cool.”

July 30, 1997, Saint Petersburg, Russia

“Hello, Stepa Rayevich!” Vera Olegovna Brantova called out when we walked into the arrivals hall at «Аэропорт Пулково» in Saint Petersburg. (Pulkovo Airport)

“Hi! How are you?”

“Wonderful! This is Jaako, my fiancé.”

“Pleased to meet you,” I said, shaking his hand.

“There are three people from the foreign ministry here for you,” she said. “I’ll be doing the tour of the Hermitage on Friday, and decided to come meet you at the airport so I could talk to you.”

“You remember Jesse Stepanovich, I’m sure. And these are my friends Paul, Mary, Mikey, Chris, Eileen, Natalie, and Nicole.”

“Of course I remember Jesse Stepanovich! Eugen is hoping to see him on your free day on Monday. We’d like to have him and a few friends join us for the day, if that’s OK.”

“Of course it is!”

The two men and one woman from the foreign ministry gathered everyone and walked with us to the baggage claim, and then directed us to a bus which would take us to the Oktyabrskaya Hotel. A renovation was underway, but the hotel was in full operation. It took some time to get everyone checked in, and by the time that was done, Dima and Vanya had arrived to host a dinner in the hotel ballroom.

“Do you remember being here, Jesse?” I asked.

“Yes. We had the dinner with my Army friends here when I was five. That was the time I met Eugen. But Larisa was here! She’s in Washington now!”

“I know. They promised to come visit in December. Are you going to invite anyone besides Mikey and Nicole for Monday?”

“Probably Jake and Tim.”

“Do you want me to talk to their parents?”

“Yes, please. Adults don’t always listen to me like my moms and aunts and you.”

“I know, but as you get older, they will. And the Sarcus listen to you.”

“I know. I just wish adults would stop treating me like a little kid! I’m eleven!”

“Yes, you are. And you keep showing them you are mature and responsible, and can be trusted, and more adults will treat you like the Sarcus. Not all of them, but more.”

“How come all the Russian adults treat me OK?”

“It’s the same as in Sweden, where people just think differently. We just have to keep working to show people that someone your age can be very mature and responsible.”

“I guess you don’t get to play with Vera Olegovna the way you did when I was five,” he smirked.

“No, I don’t, you little turkey!”

We went to sit at a table with the Sarcus and Heaths, and had a wonderful meal. After dinner, while everyone was having coffee or tea and dessert, I went to talk with Jake’s parents, who immediately agreed that he could go with Jesse. Tim’s parents took a long time to convince, and I had to enlist help from Mary Sarcu and Vanya to convince them to allow Tim to go without insisting that they go along.

“All set,” I said to Jesse when I returned to the table.

“Tim’s parents were being difficult?”

“Yes, but they eventually agreed. Vera Olegovna will come to the hotel on Monday morning at 7:00am then bring you all back in time for bed. I’m not sure what she has planned, but I’m sure you guys will have fun with Eugen and his friends.”

Later that evening, as she had said she intended to do, Natalie arrived at my room and I let her in. She kicked off her shoes, then sat on the couch, while I sat in a chair, as we had in Moscow.

“What’s the topic for tonight?” I asked.

She smiled, “Will you listen and not say anything until I’m done?”

“Yes,” I said, fully prepared for where I expected this conversation to lead.

“When you talked about learning to drive, about how you read about it and think about it, and then the time comes when you do it, even though you have no experience. But you left out the part that the driver’s ed instructor is with you in the car, giving you advice, and making sure you’re safe. Basically, they give instructions to you while you’re doing it, and that’s how you learn.

“Then I remembered what we’d talked about the first night, and how it was just like driver’s ed in that way. I had health class, though it wasn’t very good. Then you and I talked and I got way more information, kind of like the full driver’s ed course. But now, the only way to learn more is to do it, with someone who knows how to do it and who can teach, give me advice, make sure I’m safe, and help me learn. Will you take me to bed? And teach me?”

“Yes, I will. I want to ask a few questions before we do that, if it’s OK?”

“It is. What?”

“Is this the right time, and am I the right person? And if I promised I’d do that sometime in the future, would you wait?”

“Do you think I should? That I’m not old enough?”

“I did say ‘yes’,” I replied. “So yes, I think you’re old enough. Whether you should, well, what do you think my answer would be?”

“That it has to be up to me.”

“Yes. And if you’re asking ME if you should, are you absolutely sure you should?”

“Is it normal to be nervous?”

“Yes, though you seem to be pretty calm.”

Natalie laughed, “My heart is going like a million miles an hour right now and my stomach feels very strange.”

“Nerves,” I said.

I was sure it was also anticipation and building desire. And I suspected she knew that, at least subconsciously.

“But you think it might be better to wait?”

I smiled, “Break it down. And let me remind you, if you’re unsure, or can’t answer, there’s tomorrow, the following night, and so on, including after we go home.”

She shook her head, “The chance I could spend the night with you any time before I turn eighteen is basically zero. And I don’t want to just do it and leave. That feels wrong to me.”

“Have you thought about what happens in the morning? Or in a week? Or a month?”

“You mean because we can never be more than close friends?”

“That’s one issue, yes. And there’s the issue that you can only have one first time, and you can’t undo it after it’s done.”

“You think I might regret I did it?”

“That is possible, no matter how much you want to do it.”

“Are you trying to talk me out of it?”

“Am I?” I asked with a grin.

She was quiet for a moment, obviously thinking about the question.

“No, you aren’t. You’re making sure I’ve thought about it properly, and that I’m prepared for the consequences.”

“I am. There’s another issue you have to consider. We talked about it in a general way, but not a specific one.”

“Birth control and STDs?”

“Yes.”

Natalie smirked, “There were rubbers in the desk drawer in the hotel in Moscow. I took two right before we checked out. I have them in my pocket. You don’t have an STD, do you?”

“No, and I have a card which shows I was tested about a month ago. What about you?”

“I told you about it, but I can’t prove it.”

“Because of the context, I trust you. You didn’t know then that you wanted this, and had no reason to lie.”

“People lie?”

I nodded, “They do. I know of one case where the girl lied about being on the Pill because she wanted to get pregnant to try to trap the guy.”

“That’s evil!”

“We don’t always act rationally when we’re upset, and she was very upset.”

“Wait! That happened to you!”

I nodded, “It did.”

“Will you tell me what happened?”

“She got pregnant and her parents forced her to have an abortion.”

“Whoa! You were talking about something that happened to you when you were talking about being pressured. How old were you?”

“We were both sixteen.”

“Wow! That would have been really difficult for you both.”

“Yes, it would, but we wanted to have the baby.”

“I guess that’s why you need to be sure about birth control.”

“Actually, I had a vasectomy, so I can’t get you pregnant. But I wanted to make sure YOU had thought about it.”

“A test?”

“Call it being sure you had thought things through properly.”

“But you said ‘yes’ before you knew.”

“You don’t think I would have checked? And if you hadn’t been prepared, I’d have talked to you about being responsible. It wasn’t a ‘gotcha’ question that would make me change my answer, though it might have required a delay. Think about why talking about that is important.”

“Because you could get to a point where you really, really wanted to do it but had to stop. Or risk getting pregnant.”

“And how clearly do you think you might be thinking at that exact moment?”

She laughed softly, “Probably not very. My cousin told me that she was nervous, but it felt so good that she stopped even thinking about it.”

“Which is a big part of how you end up with so many unwanted pregnancies,” I said. “Sex is meant to feel good so that the species will propagate. Our desire for the pleasure drives us to do it.”

“Which is why you want to do it with me? I mean, not to make babies, but because it feels good?”

“Again, that’s part of it, but it’s also only possible because of the conversations we had.”

“Because you know I’m mature enough to do this.”

“Exactly.”

“So you think we should?”

“Would I have said ‘yes’ if I didn’t?”

“I don’t think so, but I guess it would be possible that you wanted to do it, even if you thought it wasn’t a good idea for me. But I don’t think you would ever do that.”

“And how do you know that?”

Her face lit up again, “Because I talked to you so much the last few days!”

“So?”

Natalie nodded, “I want you to take me to bed. I’m sure.”

“And what do you expect to happen?”

“I thought that was obvious!”

“Is it?”

“But aren’t you going to teach me?”

“Yes, but in driver’s ed, they teach you how to drive a car with an automatic transmission, the steering wheel on the left, and driving on the right side of the road. My car has a manual transmission and if we were in England, they’d be driving on the left with the steering wheel on the right. Not to mention there are motorcycles, trucks, race cars, and all kinds of other things you can drive.”

She laughed, “So like, what’s OK and what’s not OK?”

“Yes.”

“Can’t I just say ‘no’ if I don’t want to do something?”

“Absolutely. And that’s an important thing to remember. If you say ‘no’, that means ‘no’, and I’ll stop whatever it is right away, or not do whatever I suggested. May I ask if you’ve done any stuff before?”

“Just kissing.”

“May I kiss you?” I asked.

Natalie nodded and we both stood up. I held out my arms and she came to me. I pulled her close and our lips touched softly. I held her with my arms loosely around her and gently pressed my tongue between her slightly-parted lips. We French kissed softly for several minutes, with Natalie slowly pulling me more tightly to her. When our bodies were fully pressed together, I tightened my arms and savored her young, athletic body, currently clad in blue jeans and a t-shirt, something I would soon rectify.

I was in no rush, and Natalie didn’t seem to be either. We continued kissing for quite some time before I broke the kiss. I gently kissed Natalie’s neck, causing her to shiver, and then sucked gently on her earlobe, causing her to moan softly.

“That feels good,” she whispered.

Encouraged, I continued sucking on her earlobe, occasionally releasing it to plant soft kisses on her neck.

“I feel like I’m on fire and going to explode,” she whispered, squeezing her arms tight and pushing her hips forward.

I moved my lips back to hers, and we exchanged another soft French kiss, before I moved back to her neck and earlobe. Natalie began grinding against me, finding my hard shaft to rub against. She groaned softly and shuddered, and I was sure she’d had a small orgasm.

Carpe Diem

The following story started as an exercise between Honey123 and PierceStreet. Starting with his paragraphs : Jessica tried to have standards. Not once in the five years she’d been having sex, had the twenty-four year old been quick to jump into bed with a guy. If it happened on the third date, that was remarkable for her. The guy across the restaurant table was going to get lucky tonight, she had just decided. She didn’t care it was only their first date. And her paragraph : Every move...

Carpe Diem Molly Seizes The Day

Brenda and I were on holiday. We had really been looking forward to getting away from what had been a hectic year at work for both of us. Our hotel was right on the beach, about a twenty-minute walk from a small town, and we’d paid the extra for a gorgeous view of the bay, which we could enjoy with our breakfast on the room’s balcony every morning. On about day five of our stay, Brenda woke up, then woke me up, by rolling onto me and massaging my cock with her beautiful breasts until it was...

Carpe Demi

Paul Rushton always thought about Demi when he jerked off in the shower those days. He considered briefly and sadly that morning, as he soaked under the steaming jets and lathered up his solidifying cock, how long it had been since he pictured his wife during his early morning manual efforts. Countless years, was the sorry answer. In the early days of his and Martha’s marriage solo self-manipulation had not even been necessary, so hearty had been their sex life. The only masturbation taking...

Carpe Diem Sally Surprises Us

Hi Guys!I hope you and Brenda are both well and enjoying your holiday (as I’m sure you are, you naughty pair! lol) I hope you don’t mind me burdening you with this but my head’s in a bit of a muddle and I’m not sure what to do.You remember I broke up with Pete a little while back. It was a tough decision; not least because he was, it has to be said, a quite amazing lover! It was just... his need to be in charge was getting too much for me. Yes, yes! I know you’ve called me a control freak but...

Carpe Diem Bill and Dianne

We wondered if Molly had meant it when she’d said “see you soon,” fresh from her orgasms with us in the woods and the subsequent public dumping of Ryan. Holidays can be full of such momentary intentions (except that Molly lived in the nearby town, of course) which are rarely followed through when people return to their routine lives. Time would tell, though, and we just had to avoid getting our hopes up. The next morning’s breakfast, shared with our neighbours, Bill and Dianne, across the space...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

May 14, 1997, Chicago, Illinois “Start talking!” Melanie demanded when I sat down in her office about an hour later. “There isn’t much to say. Katya found the information for me when I asked her to look into several things about Brandon Littleton, Kevin Lomax, and John Milton.” “Do you know more about him?” “A LOT more. I don’t think you want to know.” “Probably not, but I’m your criminal defense attorney, and even though San Antonio doesn’t have you involved in this, you know the CPD...

The Three Signs Book 2 LoriChapter 28 Live at the Lifesaver

“So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office.
