Last week of School
This is my last week of school, after the upcoming tournament this weekend I will be a high school graduate.
The lawsuit with the city and county, as well as the police department, was finally settled. The payment should be here by the end of the week.
I have started my companies. I hired engineers and computer people, which I’ve set to work. To create the designs and working prototypes from my design briefs, which I had explained and drawn out what I wanted. I told them we would turn the electronics world upside down. I have a few patents already and some patents pending. I have an in house legal department consisting of a patent attorney for researching and putting together and submitting patents applications and a corporate lawyer to handle contracts for selling or licensing my patents. I asked Mr. Sawyer to become my head in house counsel, he agreed, and after some haggling, I think I got a great deal.
There has been interest in some of my patents, and a couple have been licensed. After the settlement money comes in and with the income from the licensed patents, the company has the funds to begin researching other improvements. I knew that that would keep my team busy while I went to college.
On Wednesday the girls wanted to study for finals, they were all worried about their GPA’s. I told them just to relax, and they’d do fine.
Thursday, I went to the football stadium to hit some balls, just to get my nerves under control and spent two hours hitting balls with my irons. I was aiming for the middle of the goalposts. I was in the zone and just concentrating on hitting my PW 110 yards. Coach Wilson came up to me and said, “I wish we could kick field goals as easily as you hit that golf ball.”
“I didn’t see you, Coach. I wish I could’ve played for you this year. I’m sorry about the way things turned out, sir.”
“Nonsense. You’re an incredibly gifted man, both as an athlete and a scholar. You have to do what is best for you. The way you came back from everything you’ve been up against this year is unimaginable. All I can say is most wouldn’t have had the guts or the know-how to do what you have accomplished. I was just coming out to wish you luck this weekend. I hope you destroy the state tournament record as well.”
“Thanks, Coach, it means a lot to me, just out of curiosity what is the state golf tournament record?”
“I think it’s a 63 for the lowest single round and a combined 127 for the two-day event, which is 17 under par. Coach Gears and I had to look it up to find out.” Coach answered.
“That’s a big goal to shoot for,” I replied, unsure if I could attain that low of a score.
Friday was my last day of school. At lunch, the girls were acting funny. Finals week for them is next week. We were sitting at our usual table, but none of the girls were eating, I asked them what was wrong. “Nothing,” they replied, they just weren’t hungry. I knew that was a lie, they always ate their food and then stole my fries or whatever else they could get ahold of.
I heard my name called out over the PA and the instructions to come to the office immediately. Something was off. I got up to go to the office, and my girls stood up and accompanied me to the office. I told them to please leave as I didn’t want whatever firestorm was coming to spread to them. They all smirked and said, “Nope, we’re invited too.”
I didn’t make any comments about how that was probably not true since I hadn’t heard any other names mentioned.
I stepped into the office and was instructed to go to the big conference room. I’d been there plenty of times, so I walked in. I opened the door and was shocked. “SURPRISE!”
It was my graduation. All of my teachers, the principal, Mr. and Mrs. James, and my girls were all there to watch me receive my high school diploma. I was overcome with emotion. My eyes started to leak. (Men don’t cry.) I had my picture taken with just about everyone. There was a cake and some ice cream. I was touched by the whole thing. I was told that Eve and the girls had put this all together. They knew I had no plans to celebrate this milestone. If left to my own devices, I’d just take my diploma and go quietly home. They made sure to make it memorable.
After the celebration, Coach and I were off to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan for the State Championship. We arrived mid-afternoon and went straight to the dorms that were assigned for the competitors’ use. After I’d checked into the dorm and received my room key, I asked the Coach to walk the course with me. We took our time and stayed on the cart path. When we got to number 5, I told him we could probably skip this one as I knew it by heart. Coach discussed strategies for every hole and which hole he thought I could be aggressive on and which ones I should be reserved and take what the course gave me. By the end of the walk-thru, we had come to an understanding of what we thought were the birdie holes. And the two where I could try for an eagle the par- 4, 6th and the par 3, 8th were definitely birdies I would attack them straight on. The 18th was Par 5, but depending on hole placement, it could be an eagle hole. I had the drive and the iron game to make the green in two. There was only a small bunker on the left of the green. If they placed the hole on the opposite side, I could probably try to eagle the hole. I would have a birdie shot if the hole and bunker were lined up on the left. I knew a few aggressive moves could let me have a 5 or 6 under par round tomorrow.
