I was surprised, and we talked most of the way back to base. Santiago told me his older brother owned a business installing car stereos, and he really knew how to trick them out. I started to bounce ideas off of him, and as we were pulling in the gate he promised to go with me another time and help me get all the things I would need to really make the sound system shine.
I dropped everybody off at the barracks, then headed to Gunny’s to drop off the rig. After dumping the tank and hooking it all up Gunny came out and offered me a ride back to base. I gratefully accepted and a little before midnight I was showered and crawling into bed.
I called Linda on Tuesday with Lisa next to me, and we decided that Disneyland would be a good trip for next weekend. She would drive Blue Whale and meet us there, and make the reservation the next day to make sure we had a spot. The girls talked for a bit, and Lisa and I sat and talked outside for a while. She thanked me for giving her a permanent offer of taking trips with us, and said she had a blast. I told her that I was changing the ratios on the next trip, from two girls and eight guys to four girls and six guys. “Sure, why not? My girlfriend plays, as does her sister, and my best friend. In fact, the last group I was in had more girls than guys. I bet more than a few would be interested. We can meet up there on Wednesday, and play from 6 until around 10 or so. I have all the books here, does anybody else have theirs?” Turns out that two of them did, so we agreed that was a plan. One asked who would DM, and I offered to be the starting one, and we could switch off at a later date.
They all agreed, and I told everybody to roll up four 1st level characters. “And don’t worry about equipment, just roll the characters and select weapon skills. We will take care of that on Wednesday.” I handed my Player’s Handbook and a bunch of six sided dice to one of them and a bunch of blank character sheets.
The next day at breakfast I told Lisa, and she said she would be there and pass the word to the other gals if they wanted to play or learn to play. And I was not really surprised when there were twelve players in the lounge at the appointed time. A bit large of a group, but I was sure some would drop out in the coming weeks.
The more experienced players helped decide what classes everybody would be, and I pulled out one of my book of beginner’s adventures and we were off. I made the monsters a bit harder as we played to balance it out a bit more. And everybody said they had a great time, even the new players.
On Friday it was a repeat of the week before. LCpl Hanks drove me to get the RV, and once at the barracks it was three girls and seven guys waiting to get on. One of the guys that wanted to go had firewatch that weekend so one of the stand-by riders was more than happy to take his place.
Soon we were on the way, and four hours later were pulling off in Anaheim and to the same motel I had shared at the first convention with Linda, Holly and Keith. The four girls all shared two rooms, and the seven guys got three rooms for them. The owner was very happy renting out five rooms in one shot. I told Lisa we would meet her at Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at 10, and I was driving to the campground.
When I pulled in I went to the office, Linda and Mandy were waiting for me there. We exchanged hugs and kisses, and a little later everything was hooked up and we were all having a beer. Mandy thanked me for inviting her along, and I told her that she was always welcome, even if it was not always practical at the time.
As the girls finished their beers in the captain’s chairs, I converted the back dining table into a bed. I was about to do the same to the one in front for Mandy. But before I could, Mandy softly asked if she could share the bed with us.
“Pete, Linda already said I could ask. I know it may cramp your plans for tonight, but I promise to find something to do for a few hours tomorrow night. So she can make it up to you then.” I looked at Linda and she nodded, so I said of course it was alright.
So 15 minutes later we were all dressed for bed, them in long Ts, me in my PT shorts. Linda curled up on one side, Mandy on the other. I had an arm around each, my hands resting on their waists. I gave each girl a kiss and soon we were all asleep.
I woke up sometime in the early morning and needed to pee, and realized that I was curled up behind one of the girls, the other curled up behind me. By the time she finished I had bacon and scrambled eggs done, so I woke up Mandy and dug in as Linda got dressed. Soon everything was finished and the dishes done, and we climbed into Blue Whale. And by 9 we were walking in the gate at Disneyland.
We were still early, and at the end of Main Street there was this guy playing the piano at a Coke restaurant. He was playing ragtime, and we stood around listening. He was quite good, and had a very expressive face and mannerism. Mandy asked if he knew “The Entertainer”, so of course he went into that next. And we all were surprised when during the famous repeating refrain, he played it wrong! First a note to high, then at the repeat a note to low. And he looked at us and grinned each time he did so, which told me he did this on purpose.
Which was proven when the last part of the song was played at a blistering speed and perfectly. We all applauded when he finished, and decided that if we got separated we would meet up here at noon, then at 3, 6, then 9. Mandy said that sounded great, and at about that time we started seeing some of the group that I had driven down wandering around.
First we headed to Tomorrowland to ride Space Mountain, then headed to the castle to meet Lisa. We all hugged her, and I let Linda and Mandy take charge of where we would go next. As we walked towards the Pirates ride, we told her when and where we would meet up if we separated. Of course she was welcome to come and go as she pleased, but that way she could rejoin us if she wanted.
After Pirates, we headed over to the Haunted Mansion. Linda and I cuddled into one car, with Lisa and Mandy in another. We were all laughing as we got off, and we all stayed together until after we had lunch. At that point Mandy and Lisa each took off on their own, and Linda and I spent the next three hours exploring the park. At 3 we all met again, listening to the piano player some more before heading off together for a few more rides. This time we headed to Tomorrowland, and took the People Mover, then the submarine ride. Linda and I decided to catch America Sings, and Lisa and Mandy headed off again but together this time.
After that we took the sky car and cuddled and kissed as we rode to the other side of the park, and the rest of the day went like that. We met up just in time to catch the Christmas Parade on Main Street, then decided to stick together the rest of the night. And of course we all had to ride the most infamous ride in the park, It’s A Small World. And as expected, we were humming that damned song for the next hour and a half.
But we all loved hanging out on Coke Corner again and listening to the piano player hamming it up when he closed the piano and said it was time for a break. But instead of leaving, he actually just went to the street in front where we had seen people gathering. Then we heard it, Christmas Music. The lights on Main Street were all dimmed, and then the parade started.
It was not the famous “Electrical Parade”, but it was still really good. And I saw the guy was really into it, and grinned almost like a kid as each float passed by. He even had Lisa and Mandy on each side of him, while I was holding Linda in my arms. And here was a guy that must be near 40, but laughing and smiling like a child while he watched something he surely saw over and over again each day he worked. Finally it ended, and we all thanked him as we talked about what to do next.
At just after 9 we all decided we had enough, and as we were walking towards the gate we saw two of the girls that came with us doing the same thing. So I invited them to join us for a snack and drink, and soon we were all back at the RV. I threw a bunch of hot dogs into a pot of water on the stove, and Linda got everybody a beer. They all talked about how much fun they had during the day, and were very thankful I had allowed them to come along.
Once they were cooked we each had one as we talked about the next trip. Linda wanted to see Las Vegas, so we agreed that was the trip for next weekend. Sadly we told everybody that you had to be 21 to gamble to take in the shows, but surely there was enough to do otherwise for a weekend.
And by popular vote, it was decided that the week after that would be back to Van Nuys. And with only a little pressure, it was to be a “Hen Trip”. Only girls, guys could only be on standby in case there were not enough girls that wanted to go. I even promised that they could use Blue Whale to go shopping, and they could probably convince Holly to take some of the girls in her car.
All five of the girls thought that was a great idea, and I said I would just hang out with my dad and work on some things at home while they were out. For Saturday night all but one wanted to go to Hot Trax, but the dissenter agreed so long as the next time we went skating instead. There was no surprise that the dissenter was Mandy.
And that became the pattern for most of my time at 29 Palms. One weekend at home then the next somewhere else at first, then simply going to Van Nuys every weekend. We only did Vegas two times, while it was fun there was simply not enough for most of us to do there to make it worth repeating after the second trip. And we only visited Disneyland a few more times ourselves. Soon it was the norm to just drive to Van Nuys, and on the way drop off some of the passengers at Anaheim or Buena Park, then pick them up on the way back.
