Once we had packed everything back up again we decided to head upstairs. However, when we passed the lounge on the way to the elevators I noticed that they had a band playing and instead headed towards the bar. Most just come to me out of nowhere, other times I admit I lift a piece from either a well-known story, or from a book. The Seven Dwarves were a case in point. I needed a fake gold rush, simply as an excuse to have the party leave town and start the adventure. Knowing history, I decided to create a fake gold rush, knowing the effect it has on people from our own history here in California. But I did not want a real gold strike, so I made the real cause the dwarves finding a huge treasure. And of course that is a cultural reference that everybody understood. But the group is always so distracted by this that they missed the fact that they were actually being used as pawns.”
I took a drink of soda, and continued. “The same within that one where one of the members was actually a plant and a spy. I took that from Film Noir, where one of the people involved was actually working against them without their knowing. What is different is that I did it in a way where they were not an NPC, but an actual party member. In such a game, we are all the actors in the screenplay that we are acting out as we go. I simply took it a step further is all.”
I saw Jack nodding as I said that, and knew from his background from a movie family he would get it. The rest of the presentation went off perfectly, and we all got a lot of applause. And we wandered the floor a bit more and took part in a board game that involved an Indy race before heading to dinner. Dee joined us again, and said that she thought I did good in the discussion. Once we were finished Holly and Jack headed off, and said they would be in position by 7. At 6:30 we were in the room and Mr. Cummings was giving us the new draft of the adventure. As usual there were minor changes, and they all looked good.
With envelopes prepared the 6 people in line were escorted in and signed the non-disclosure agreements. One refused, so she was escorted out and the next one brought in. And Jack did his part perfectly, setting up the player from the Man-at-Arms guild, and in the final battle that player was killed and the party was congratulating themselves for taking down the enemy.

Everybody had thought his denial was part of an act, and not real. And thought Jack pulled off the set-up perfectly. We did a critique, and with sheets in hand Mr. Cummings said it looked like I had another hit and we shook hands as we left.

Once we had packed everything back up again we decided to head upstairs. However, when we passed the lounge on the way to the elevators I noticed that they had a band playing and instead headed towards the bar. I needed a fake gold rush, simply as an excuse to have the party leave town and start the adventure. Knowing history, I decided to create a fake gold rush, knowing the effect it has on people from our own history here in California. But I did not want a real gold strike, so I made the real cause the dwarves finding a huge treasure. And of course that is a cultural reference that everybody understood. But the group is always so distracted by this that they missed the fact that they were actually being used as pawns.”
I took a drink of soda, and continued. “The same within that one where one of the members was actually a plant and a spy. I took that from Film Noir, where one of the people involved was actually working against them without their knowing. What is different is that I did it in a way where they were not an NPC, but an actual party member. In such a game, we are all the actors in the screenplay that we are acting out as we go. I simply took it a step further is all.”
I saw Jack nodding as I said that, and knew from his background from a movie family he would get it. The rest of the presentation went off perfectly, and we all got a lot of applause. And we wandered the floor a bit more and took part in a board game that involved an Indy race before heading to dinner. Dee joined us again, and said that she thought I did good in the discussion. Once we were finished Holly and Jack headed off, and said they would be in position by 7. At 6:30 we were in the room and Mr. Cummings was giving us the new draft of the adventure. As usual there were minor changes, and they all looked good.
With envelopes prepared the 6 people in line were escorted in and signed the non-disclosure agreements. One refused, so she was escorted out and the next one brought in. And Jack did his part perfectly, setting up the player from the Man-at-Arms guild, and in the final battle that player was killed and the party was congratulating themselves for taking down the enemy.
They were then shocked when I read the aftermath (created by me, cleaned up by the staff that work for Mr. Cummings), describing how the Thieves Guild systematically killed all of their leadership, and the remaining members each barely escaped with their lives.
It was an uproar! It was confusion! It was glorious! And they all loved it! Even the fighter who had been set up thought it was great, and said it was played masterfully. Everybody had thought his denial was part of an act, and not real. And thought Jack pulled off the set-up perfectly. We did a critique, and with sheets in hand Mr. Cummings said it looked like I had another hit and we shook hands as we left.
Once back in the room Jack and I took our showers first as the girls set up the boom box with the tape we had been listening to for days.
