“We could tell,” Amy said. “You two really looked good out there, it’s to bad the ARA does not allow a girls couples event. Although I can see why when you look at all of it. For compulsories like that it would be fine, but I think freestyle would be the real problem.”

Seeing the confusion among the rest of us, Amy explained it for us non-competitive skaters. “What they were doing out there were the compulsories, which is the first stage of a major couples competition. And is it ever dull! Everybody skates the exact same steps, the exact same way, to the exact same song. The judges are looking for form and execution, but there’s no originality at all. They want precision in that stage. After that is the freestyle, that’s what everybody really wants to see. That’s where you really have the spins, the lifts, where the guy picks the girl up, and things like that.”

Amy looked at Chet, and he continued. “In freestyle, that’s where the guy’s strength makes a big difference.” He flexed his arms behind himself, and I could see that this guy was cut! Not like a bodybuilder, but even with his slim build you could see he had some impressive if not bulky muscles. “That’s why when it comes to figure skating, the girls really have the pick of whoever they want. While skating we’re expected to lift them to shoulder height, then over our heads.

“I think that’s where the girls would have a problem. Peggy looked at her, and said “Nope, notta chance! I still have problems doing lifts myself with a guy, but I’ve been working on my upper body strength. And I’ve been trying to find a good couples partner, but none of them worked out.”

After a few minutes we could see the front doors had opened and people were crowding in the front vestibule waiting to come in the rink itself, and Peggy asked if they could give a brief demonstration. Amy and Chet said sure, and gave Peggy and Mandy both a brief hug and they headed to the rink floor.

If this is what it would end up like, it was amazing! They had obviously done this a great many times. It was the same moves Peggy and Mandy did, but much more refined, with some more flair thrown in.

“This is what the compulsory should look like” Peggy explained. “Mand is not quite ready for a lot of those moves, but this is giving her an idea what it would be like when it all comes together.”

Mandy was watching them closely, I think trying to memorize the differences between what Peggy had taught her and what she was now seeing for the first time in Amy and Chet. But while Peggy and Mandy had done it for about 4 minutes at a time, these two were finished in about 2 minutes. The song had not yet finished, and the doors were just opening when Chet called out again “Pedro, Endless!”
