The Gavel of Justice winked back into normal space well out from the Oort cloud. Mishka had explained the purpose of a judge’s gavel to the Trade Association’s council, but refrained from playing If I Had A Hammer during their stay. After they learned of the Seeker’s genetic meddling, he doubted any of the council would care about the implications.
They were finally coming home. Shortly after the exit from the FTL-enabling warp field, Mishka ‘spoke’ with Tawny about their final plans and anticipated arrival.

Jade was right. As Beryl ‘saw’ the members of her new Nexus, the depth of her family’s personal betrayal swept through. She exploded, “Those cowards!” She wailed and sagged into Scarlett’s arms. “I really am an experiment. They never let me know, and all my life I thought I was flawed. Then they disposed of me,” she cried, then dissolved into almost inconsolable weeping.
Their ship’s name was awkward, but appropriate. Distances required the Trade Association’s traveling troubleshooter and judiciary review panels - that would be Mishka’s Nexus - to be investigator, judge, jury, and punisher. When starting home, Mishka thought it was to rest and relax, but with Beryl’s information, they would be back on the job.
They approached the Solar System high off the elliptic, hoping to avoid detection. Beryl’s information that a Seeker station was orbiting Jupiter troubled Mishka. Beryl and Jade assured Mishka that the xenophobic Seeker typically used deceit rather than overt violence - that they’d use poison rather than a knife - Mishka was concerned and careful.
The three-week trip inward gave the Nexus adequate time to decide on a course of action and flesh out the details. Did I mention flesh? The Nexus’s new members were also allowed time to integrate into their new family AND for horny to become their almost overwhelming state.
The Gavel, remained in Earth orbit crewed by the Seeker’s ‘experiments’. A ship’s shuttle landed at the Athens, Ben Epps Airport, and Mishka exited, followed by Imp and Pounce, then Jade and Jolly. From the newish terminal, Tawny and Peace rushed to greet their arriving family. They warmly embraced Imp and Pounce, then each grabbed one of Mishka’s hands and pulled him into the terminal.
Boner and Loki were beside themselves. With the arrival of Jade and Jolly, they had two new best friends they had to decide between. Viewed from the outside, the stolen station was a slowly rotating torus around a perpendicular spire. The rotation had nothing to do with generating centrifugal artificial weight; rather it acted as a gyroscope and served to steady the structure. The station, like the Traveler’s stolen ship and the Gavel, had an artificial gravity generator - several actually, spaced equidistant around the torus.
Passenger ships docked to either end of the spire. Cargo ships had a trickier docking, much like airplanes land on an aircraft carrier, but with a process that required them to calculate a tangential approach in order to settle ‘on top’ of the torus.
Roughly two miles behind the stolen station, the Traveler’s stolen ship, itself a huge, mobile station was following the same Jupiter orbit. The coasting Justice approached the station, hiding from sensors in the ‘shadow’ of the ship.
Two factions of Seeker were aboard the stolen station. The largest was the team tasked by Mishka to clean up and preserve the Earth - a huge task for such a small group. A Nexus of some five hundred was also sequestered - the orbit within orbit faction - masquerading as the Seeker oversight and review council. This group had managed to conceal their larger treachery from the rest of the Seeker and so avoided being banished during Mishka’s earlier judgment.
Aboard Justice, Bub turned to Mishka and Scarlett and told them, “I think that at least one reason the Seeker are so devious is their lack of sophistication in technology. They’ve concentrated their talents in biology and are true wizards in that arena, but they were dependent on other species to get into space - still are. They can learn to use mechanical and electrical technology, but they don’t understand it.”
“And while they are adept strategists, any change can throw them. Their tactics - I think you’d say - ‘suck’. They just don’t anticipate reactions or see near term implications. For example, they were spooked when some humans were found to be alive. So they stole the station before it was fully turned over to them. Our construction protocols, securities, overrides, and passwords are still in place.”
He continued, “I can’t know for certain, but I don’t think those fools even left a station-keeping watch aboard our ship. If we keep to a position behind it, I doubt those aboard the station will even notice us. Once my team crosses and boards our ship, most of our task will be easily accomplished.”
Mishka sighed, nodded, and told him, “And this is the species I tasked to preserve Earth ... Okay. But, be sure to stay suited up. Remember, they may be chauvinistic and overconfident, but they got you once with some sort of biological agent; there may be traps.”
Bub indicated his understanding and signaled his team to head towards the Gavel’s number two shuttle. Turning to follow, he hugged Scarlett and told her, “You watch out for Honey and Sugar, and bring back my niece - alive - please.”
Scarlett hugged her friend back, and practicing her new mental abilities, she told him,
“Not a second,” Bub replied.
Those Travelers still aboard the Justice waited an anxious two hours until Mishka relayed Bub’s triumphant
Mishka’s Nexus could ‘hear’ directly, but Mishka continued to relay Bub’s communications aloud for the rest,
Even with the Traveler’s help, boarding and taking a large, occupied space station was going to be a dangerous, difficult, and tedious process, even a ship staffed by presumed incompetents. Mishka divided the tasks among specialty teams. All wore airtight, hooded ship suits and were armed with .22 magnum pistols. Both were hoped to be unnecessary, but they protected against any biological or chemical agents, and the pistols should be able to prevent or stop attacks without seriously damaging the station. Following their agreed upon plan, the Gavel’s number one shuttle ferried five teams to the Travelers’ ship.
Team one - was led by Mishka, necessary because as Nexus Prime, he had the strongest powers. With Mishka were Cyd as legal advisor, Imp The People’s empath to read the variety of emotions and intentions, Josella and Susan, and five of Horeb’s former slaves.
Team two - Led by Jade was otherwise made up entirely of nine of Horeb’s former slaves. They were to reassure and comfort Seekers desiring separation or forcefully separated from their Nexus. One of the former slaves was a Prime, and he was present to gather in any desiring refugee.
Team three - Led by Scarlett, was to rescue and protect Bub’s niece. This team was made up of Beryl, Violet, Rose, Honey, and Sugar and backed by four additional Travelers.
Team four - Led by Jolly, was the reserves. Personnel evenly split between rescued slaves and Travelers, they could fight or provide technical assistance as needed.
Team five - That was Siobhan and Jin Ae - highly pissed at being designated ‘communications backup’ and assigned a ‘support’ post in the Travelers’ construction control center.
Honey sent to her cousin aboard the station. In her mind, she had already determined her cousin’s name-to-be among humans.
