July 1980, Milford, Ohio

“We need to talk,” Stephanie said softly. “Please don’t send me away.”

“Fine, Stephanie, talk,” I said distractedly, not really caring about talking to her.

She shut the door behind her and locked it.

“Please don’t be that way! Just talk to me like my Big Brother used to.”

“I’m not sure I want to,” I replied, still frowning in anger at her.

“You’re hurting. I’m hurting. We need to fix this.”

“I’m not sure we can.”

“I know how,” she said almost in a whisper.

Her hands came slowly up the front of her chest. I watched, my eyes frozen wide open as she slowly started to undo the first button. I gasped as her fingers moved to the second button and undid it, showing a hint of a lacy bra underneath.

“Stephanie, stop!” I commanded, holding my hand out at her as if that would stop her. I no longer had the will to fight with her, but whatever it was she was thinking, I couldn’t let her go any further.

“If you won’t talk to me, the only way to fix this is to make love with you,” she answered, her voice cracking.

She looked at me, her hands still on the next button of the blouse, ready to continue.

“Button up your blouse, Squirt,” I sighed. “I’ll talk with you.”

“You called me Squirt!” she said, stopping a sniffle through a smile.

She started to redo the buttons, but stopped, a smile appearing between sniffles, “Maybe I’ll just take this off anyway!”

“No, leave it on. If Jeff sees you, it would all be over.”

Mercifully, she finished buttoning it up.

“We have to fix this,” she begged. “I can’t take it anymore. You’re going to destroy your life and maybe other people’s lives if you keep this up.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“It’s very simple. Talk to Jennifer.”

“Why? It’s pretty clear that we’re through.”

“I don’t understand why you think that. Were you and Birgit done when she moved back to Sweden? That’s twice as far away as Seattle! Were you and Jennifer done when YOU went to Sweden for a year?”

“No Squirt, you know that wasn’t the case for Birgit or Jennifer.”

“Then why is it now? What happened, Big Bro?”

“She didn’t tell me.” I said, feeling my anger starting to well up again. “She didn’t fucking tell me!”

“You know, you should stop using that word. It’s just not you.”

“You use it!”

“I do with you and nobody else. But it’s not you, Steve. In fact, right now, you aren’t you. You’re like some alien that showed up in Steve Adams’ body. I don’t like it at all.”

“So you wanted to come in here and make love with an alien?” I asked with a smirk.

“No, I wanted to knock some sense into you. I thought maybe, just maybe, making love would snap you out of this. You’ve done a lot of fucking this week, but you haven’t made love a single time, I’m sure. Well, maybe to Joyce.”

“No, Joyce told me that she wasn’t going to put up with, and I quote, ‘my bullshit’, any more, and basically told me to get my head on straight before I called her, or don’t bother calling her again.”

“Good for her! I think I’ll change my opinion of her. She’s right, you know. Nobody should put up with your bullshit. I don’t know why Jennifer does. Or I did, for that matter. It’s time for it to stop. And I’m not kidding.”

I looked at her for a moment. Was she telling me what to do?

“Why do you get to decide what I should and shouldn’t do when my entire goal was to get out from under Mom’s thumb?”

“I’m not Mom,” Stephanie said softly. “I don’t decide what you should or shouldn’t do, even if it does seem that way sometimes. You and I have a special connection. I’ve known it since I was seven and it gets stronger every day. What you do or don’t do affects me as well. Who I am, and who I will be in the future, is tied to what you do or don’t do. I can’t explain how it works, it just does.

“That’s why I sometimes push you to do things, or not do things. I do that because I want what’s best for us, not just what’s best for you. Sometimes, what’s best for us won’t be what you want or what you think is best. Don’t ask me how I know either. I can’t explain that any more than I can explain our connection. You can’t explain the connection you have with Jennifer, either.

“Sometimes, I have to go on feelings alone, just like you do. But I know when I’m right, and when I’m right, I push.” Her voice grew softer, “and sometimes I push too hard.”

“Stephanie, the connection between Jennifer and me is gone. The last time we made love it wasn’t there at all.”

“Is that what happened?” Stephanie looked at me as if a light had turned on inside her. “Now I get it! Now I understand why you’re acting the way you are. That explains everything! Now I’m sure that you need to get back together with her. Please, please do what I’m telling you to do.”

“One of the things you told me to do was to fuck as many girls as I could!”

“I never said that! I didn’t say anything even close to that. I said you should make Jennifer your permanent girlfriend and have as much sex on the side as she allows. That’s way different from how you remember it!”

“I’m sure you’re right.”

“Of course I am!” she said smugly.

“But I can’t make Jennifer my permanent girlfriend now.”

“No, you can’t. But you can sure as heck make up with her and work on it. You need to do that. If she leaves and you haven’t made up, it really is over. And you don’t really want that!”

“Are you sure about that? You know Karin thinks we’re meant to be together.”

“Yes, and Erin wants you and so do Debbie V and Bethany. Heck, I think Beth wants you, too.”

“On that last one, she only wants this,” I smirked, pointing to my crotch.

“Oops, OK,” Stephanie giggled.

“But otherwise, you’re right. So do Joyce, Elyse, and probably Kathy Will. Not to mention Donna, but she’s kind of ruled out at this point.”

“I heard what Mom said to you. She did forbid me from playing with Donna or having her over. I was really upset but there wasn’t anything I could do. What were you doing with Donna? Just walking?”

“Hand-in-hand. But what do you think I was doing AFTER THAT with a cute girl who has a crush on me?” I smirked.

“Damn, Steve, a pregnant girl?”

“Yeah, but she started it!” I realized how lame that sounded as soon as I said it. “She did it because she thought I needed someone to comfort and love me.”

“She’s right, you did. But that should have been Jennifer. Or me. Nobody else. You know it and I know it.”

“And the other girls?”

“Dalliances. Playthings. Sex partners. Whatever you want to call them. The only ones that really are in question are Elyse, Bethany, and Karin. The rest don’t matter. Dump them! Now.”

“I’d add Anna, Erin, and Joyce to that list.”

“Maybe, but I don’t think so. I’m telling you now. The bullshit has to stop.”

“Just what Joyce said, which is why she needs to be on the list. She’d make a good ally for you, I think.”

“To replace Jennifer? I don’t think so. Joyce is too uptight. If you tell her about you and me, she’ll freak out. Karin came close to freaking out, didn’t she?”

“Yes, but thankfully she reeled it back in.”

“If you can’t tell a girl about us, you’ll never be able to be with her long-term. Any girl who gets that close to you will find out or figure it out like Melanie and Jennifer did. I think that even Joyce suspects it.”

“So how come Mom can’t see it?”

“Oh, I think she does, but not quite the way you and I see it. Of course, she doesn’t think it’ll be you and me, just that you’ll have a bad influence on me and that it’ll be somebody like Ed Krajick. And it has to stay that way, Big Bro, or she will never leave us alone together ever.”

“Of course. I’m not about to march out and tell her or do anything with you where she could see,” I said. Then with a questioning smile, “Ed Krajick?”

“As for Ed Krajick, that’s my business once you and I fuck each other unconscious and figure out where we go from there. Don’t change the subject! Look, I know you won’t do anything to make Mom suspicious. We have to find a way to fix this with you and Jennifer and figure out how to get you back to normal.”

“We?”

“Yes, you fucking idiot, we!” she giggled. “You certainly can’t do it by yourself.”

“I did just fine in Sweden.”

“Well, except for Annie, I guess you did.”

“True. That was a major mistake.”

“I don’t see how you did anything wrong, though, if what you wrote is true.”

“It’s true.”

“The difference is that Mom is here and that just messes you up. You can’t think straight when she’s anywhere around you or has any contact at all with you. If you listen to me, I can help you with her, Steve. I can help us with her. And when Spring Break is here, your penis will enter my vagina, tearing my hymen and we’ll be exactly what we’re supposed to be.”

“That’s kind of clinical, Steph!”

“OK, how about this — you’ll make love to me, you’ll take my cherry, and we’ll have huge orgasms together. You’ll put your tongue in my pussy and lick me until I scream. I’ll suck you until you cum in my mouth and I’ll swallow every drop. And you know what? We’ll both love the taste more than ice cream sundaes! We’ll do all of that and more, Steve. We WILL be one with each other!”

“God, don’t talk like that, please!” I said hoarsely, my dick stirring at the thoughts flashing in my head.

“I have a plan. Trust me, OK? I know exactly what we should do and when,” her voice turning soft.

“Yes, Stephanie. I trust you on that.”

“I’ll even help you with the where!” she giggled.

I just groaned, hearing her giggle.

“Then trust me about Jennifer,” she went on. “Fix it. If you don’t, something very, very bad will happen.”

“That’s the same thing that Melanie told me,” I said.

“Then you know it’s true. I didn’t tell her anything. I talked to Jennifer, of course, but not to Melanie. But I do have to ask, what did you say to Pete that made him bounce you off his car?”

“I might have told Melanie that I would have sex with her every possible way until she begged me to stop even though she and Pete are engaged.”

“You did NOT do that!” she said, horrified.

“Yes, I did. Pete took offense.”

“You’re lucky you can breathe, let alone walk. What happened to your rule?”

“I broke it with Sofia and Mary, so I decided that if it couldn’t be an inviolable rule, I should drop it. Joyce told me that was a mistake.”

“She’s right again. I really do have to talk to her. That rule goes back in place right now.”

“Why? I broke it. It doesn’t really matter anymore.”

“Do you think it matters to Pete?”

“Yes.”

“There’s your reason. That’s why it matters. You knew that all along. It was Pete and Melanie that created that rule in your mind! You have to apologize to Pete. And to Melanie. And you have to fix things with Jennifer. If you don’t, everything falls apart. Let me show you why you have to fix it.”

“Show me?”

“Stand up, Big Brother.”

I stood up, and she came to me. She leaned forward and kissed my cheek softly. It was like being hit with 220 volts of electricity. My brain short-circuited, and I forgot to breathe. My knees got weak, and I collapsed back into the chair in front of my computer.

“That’s why, Big Brother. If you don’t fix it, you’ll never experience that again. Never.”

She turned and walked out of the room. I just sat there slack-jawed, stared at the doorway.

About ten minutes later, my head had finally cleared enough that I could get out of the chair without risk of falling over. I went to the door of Stephanie’s room.

“Squirt, you’re right. I need to fix it. I’ll fix it. Then you and I need to talk more. I need you to help me figure out what to do so that when the time comes, we can feel that.”

“Of course I’ll help you! But I have to warn you, that was nothing compared to how it will be when I’m naked in your bed under you and we’re moving together.”

“I won’t survive,” I sighed.

“I told you that a long time ago! I wasn’t kidding when I said we’d fuck each other unconscious.”

“No, I guess you weren’t. How did you know?”

“Every time you touch me, even just a hug, I feel that. I’ve felt it since I was seven.”

“Then why could I only feel it now?”

“I don’t know. You knew it was there, but for some reason, you couldn’t feel it. Maybe you had to completely accept it first. Maybe only today did you finally completely accept what we are together.”

“You might be right. And maybe that explains why I didn’t feel the connection with Jennifer. I had written off the relationship. But if that’s the case, how did I feel it when we first made love?”

“I can’t explain that. I can’t explain for sure why you never felt it before with me.”

“Maybe it has to do with what Jennifer and I discussed her being a surrogate for you.”

“I don’t know. But one thing is for sure, once you and I make love, you’ll find out just how deep the connection with Jennifer really is. It’s like you wrote in your journal about your future somehow being tied to you and me being together.”

“It still makes no sense, Squirt, but I really do believe that. Whatever there is between us is key to who you are and who I am and who we will be in the future. You’re right about that.”

“I know, Big Brother,” she said softly. “Are you still scared? Scared about us?”

“No, I’m not. I’m completely at peace with our relationship.”

“Good. That’s what I wanted to hear,” her face beaming.

“I’m going to call Jennifer.”

“She’s waiting by the phone.”

“God damn it, Stephanie!”

“Go call her,” she giggled.

I went back to my room and picked up the phone and dialed Jennifer’s number. She answered on the first ring.

“Hi, Steve,” she said softly, without even hearing my voice.

“What is it with you and Stephanie, Jennifer? How do you two do that?”

“We’ll never tell!” she giggled.

“I’m sorry. I’ve treated you very badly. Please forgive me.”

“I forgive you. I should have told you about Seattle back in March. I’m sorry. Please forgive me.”

“I forgive you too.”

“Now what?” Jennifer asked.

“I need to apologize to Pete and Melanie, too.”

“Yes, and sooner rather than later,” she answered. “Did you really tell Pete to his face that you would screw Melanie until she couldn’t take it anymore and that you didn’t care about him?”

“I might have. And he might have bounced me off his car after I said that.”

“Then you really need to fix that. Pete trusted you implicitly and you might have broken that trust now.”

“I hope I haven’t, because it will be tough to get it again.”

“I hear from Stephanie that you’re grounded.”

“Until tomorrow morning.”

“I’ll be there at 8:00am to pick you up. Plan to spend all day with me. And all night. And all day Saturday. And Saturday night. Well, you get the picture!” she giggled.

“I’m going to have to talk to my dad about that. I’ll do it so long as he’ll allow it. I have to be careful for the next year, but then I’ll be free.”

“I know. It’s really important.”

“I know, Jen. I need to see Pete and Melanie at some point very soon. I’ll call them tonight.”

“We can see them tomorrow. Find out a time. We can accommodate their schedule.”

“I’d like to talk to them alone, if you don’t mind.”

Not How He Imagined His Wedding Day Part 4 of 4 The Reconciliation

"Hi, Mel."She started crying and talking incoherently, eventually making some sense. "I was sure you weren't going to call. I'm so sorry. I love you, please don't leave me. Please!" She became more excited, "I've got my period on Sunday night, I'm not pregnant, please don't leave me. I'll do anything, please, anything. I've been such an idiot. I know you won't believe me, but I do love you. I should have come to you. when Ang told me."She finally stopped, panting out of breath, but continued...

101 Bell WhistleChapter 11 Reconciliation

The flight into Phoenix was not a pleasant one. Audra was excited as it was her first flight and she gripped my hand until I almost thought that I was going to lose circulation during takeoff. Audra quickly calmed down after we were in the air but two squabbling pre-teens in the seats behind us made it impossible to rest. Landing in Denver, an airport I had never been to before, added a touch of anxiety as we had only 25 minutes to deplane, run halfway down a concourse to catch the airport...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 57 Land of the Rising Sun Part III

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 7 SakurakoChapter 54 Westward Bound Or is it Eastward

June 15, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “That’s everything, I think,” I said. “My luggage is in the trunk of the car, I have my passport, tickets, and money, both dollars and yen. I can’t think of anything else.” “I’ll see you in five weeks,” Elyse said, giving me a quick hug. “Did you see they rioted in Vancouver last night because they lost the Stanley Cup?” I chuckled, “Only Canadians would riot when they LOSE the Cup! I did see that on the front page of the Trib. Are we ready?” “Michelle and...

The Circle of Life a Harry Potter ImaginingChapter 6 Reconciliation

It was now July and there was still another year before the N.E.W.T. exams, so Harry's summer was, he hoped, going to be relatively care- and stress-free. Ginny had sat all of her O.W.L.'s, so she only had a few weeks to wait for her exam results. Hermione had restored her parents memories of who they were and that they had a daughter. The Grangers had decided that they were enjoying their new lifestyle in Australia, and that they would like to stay there permanently. Hermione would be...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

August 21, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Unbelievable,” I said when I read the headline from the Chicago Tribune. “It says here that Solidarity activist Tadeusz Mazowiecki was nominated to be Prime Minister of Poland.” I hadn’t had a chance to read the paper on Sunday because it hadn’t been delivered before we left for the race track in Michigan. “So now what?” Kara asked. “We’re in totally uncharted territory. Your guess is as good as anyone’s right about now.” “Steve, do you have a minute?”...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 36 My Lifes Journey

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. The flight back had been long but uneventful, and I was happy that the businessman in the seat next to me hadn’t wanted to talk. I read, wrote some longhand journal entries, ate, and generally relaxed while the plane zipped over the Atlantic. I’d come home, taken a sauna, eaten a light meal, and gone straight to bed, not bothering to check messages, look at the mail that...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 4 Calm Before the Storm

June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. That wouldn’t seem odd to anyone, because I often went to my room to read. In addition, I now had the TV I’d received for my birthday. I flipped it on to WXIX Channel 19 and reruns of Gilligan’s Island and Green Acres played in the background while I read. I had to get my mind clear for the final exams that...

July, 1982, Milford, Ohio I woke up early on Friday morning to make breakfast for Kara and her mom before she went to work. Mrs. Blanchard was surprised, but very pleased. After her mom left for work, Kara gave me a fierce kiss. “Thanks for staying in and cooking breakfast for us,” Kara said. “I hope that doesn’t cause you trouble with Stephanie, with you breaking your normal routine.” “Don’t worry about it,” I said, kissing her back. “We got in a bit later than I expected, and she’ll...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois After Rosie left, I stripped the sheets from my bed, as well as the cover of the duvet, and tossed everything into the washing machine. I lit a lavender candle in the room, and then swept and dusted. I did a quick spot-check of the rest of the house and noticed that the tub in the sauna needed to be cleaned. I scrubbed it, then mopped the sauna floor with a damp sponge mop. I finished cleaning the sauna about the time the washing machine finished, so I moved...

August, 1984, Chicago, Illinois The rest of the week proceeded as expected - class on Wednesday, as well as the usual visit from Penny, work on Thursday, and class on Friday. March 25, 2000, Chicago, Illinois “What time do I need to have you home?” “8:00pm will be fine,” Misty replied. “My parents are in Normal visiting my brother at Illinois State. They aren’t supposed to be home before 10:00pm.” Misty and I were in my car on the way to the NIKA apartment which, fortunately, was not being used. A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 7 Setting the Course of My Life

June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. And frankly, there was no way that could be true. So I...

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 14 A Southern Belle a Surprise Proposal two Cheerleaders an Old Flame and a Girl Back Home Part I

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

We’ll have some family time this afternoon. I don’t have any plans.” “Good!” I hugged her and the rest of the kids, then went to find Kara. September 3, 1989, Chicago, Illinois “Good morning, Sensei,” I said, bowing to Sensei Jim. “Good morning!” he said waving me to a chair in his office. “How was your trip?” I asked. “Enlightening. I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. As usual, we turned around and walked back, taking the path to the...

March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. July 1980, Over the North Atlantic We reached cruising altitude, and I settled back to read my book. Pam raised the armrest between us, snuggled close to me and read as well. After the cabin crew picked up the trays and offered drinks again, they passed once more, offering headsets for the movie. Trevor and Maria took them, but Pam and I didn’t, instead we turned on...

November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends. May 1979 The limo dropped me at home about 9:00pm. I took my stuff to my room, stripped, and hung up the tux. The rest of the things went into the hamper. I took a shower, put on shorts and a t-shirt, and walked down the hall into my dad’s office. I saw no reason to put this off any longer. “Stephen, you need to explain yourself!” my mom demanded. “I was in Mrs. McGrath’s, well, Mrs. Sanders’ now, wedding, as I said.” “You walked her down the aisle! When we finished, Karin held me tight and refused to let me move off of her. “Sleep there, please,” she whispered. July 3, 1996, Chicago, Illinois I blinked several times and took a breath before responding. It didn’t help.
