September 1980, Milford, Ohio

On Monday, Mrs. Brewer, the chemistry teacher, assigned lab partners. I sighed when I heard the names called. My partner for chemistry for the semester was going to be Kara Blanchard. She was gorgeous and had a great body. She was also a Bible thumper. I hadn’t really had any interaction with her, but knew her by reputation. I discovered that she also knew about me.

Kara raised her hand.

“Yes, Miss Blanchard?” Mrs. Brewer asked.

“Mrs. Brewer, may I please have a different lab partner,” Kara asked.

Yes! I’d take anyone else in the class, including one of the two stoners that I would have to carry through lab by doing all the work.

“No, Miss Blanchard,” she answered in her usual strict tone. “Unless you two are a couple, you can work and will work together. If you are a couple, then I don’t permit you to work together.”

“Eww, that’s a disgusting thought!” she said under her breath, but loud enough for me to hear.

I decided to play dumb with her.

“What is your problem, Kara?” I asked quietly.

“You! I know all about you, Steve Adams! You’re going to hell for what you do!”

“I’d say that’s between me and God.”

She didn’t answer, instead looking intently at Mrs. Brewer. I saw her scribble something on a piece of paper, which she pushed over to me at the end of class.

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men.

I knew the quote from First Corinthians. I just shook my head, crumpled the paper and dropped it in the trash. I had several ideas for a response, but I’d need to double-check my Bible at home to be sure I got the quotes right. I also wasn’t sure which way I’d respond.

Monday after school, I had my appointment with Doctor Mercer. I repeated the conversation that I’d had with Bethany and later with both Bethany and Stephanie. Doctor Mercer agreed with them, which didn’t surprise me at all. We also talked about my mom and my relationship with her. I told Doctor Mercer that I didn’t think we’d make much progress there, and that the only solution was to move out. She thought I might be right.

On Tuesday, I was prepared for Kara Blanchard. I knew the Bible well enough and had some interesting verses for her. When I walked into class, I dropped a piece of paper in front of her.

Your graceful legs are like jewels, the work of an artist’s hands. Your navel is a rounded goblet that never lacks blended wine. Your waist is a mound of wheat encircled by lilies. Your breasts are like two fawns, like twin fawns of a gazelle.

“What is this?” she said, sounding confused.

“The Bible, Kara. Song of Songs, Chapter 7. And if you know your anatomy, the author isn’t talking about her belly button, because that’s above her waist!” I smirked.

“You are disgusting!” she hissed.

“I just quoted the Bible, Kara. You can write out the verse from First Corinthians from memory, but you don’t recognize the Song of Songs?”

“That disgusting stuff is not in the Bible!” she hissed. “You made that up!”

“You obviously have no idea what’s in the Bible.”

Mrs. Brewer glared at us, preventing Kara from responding.

I decided I was going to have fun with the situation. If she thought she could preach to me, she was sadly mistaken. In fact, I decided I was going to carefully tease her as often as I could.

Tuesday after school, I headed to the Junior High for the computer class. The students were working through simple programming exercises, so I spent a lot of time answering questions. One of the girls, Krista King, an eighth grader, constantly asked questions and after a bit, it became clear that she was flirting. She was cute with shoulder-length black hair, and I was happy to flirt back.

On Wednesday when I went to chemistry class, I was again ready for Kara.

“I bet you ran to your locker and looked up that verse as soon as class was over! They don’t teach that in Sunday School, do they, Kara?”

“Those verses don’t mean what you think! I can’t believe you would try to pervert God’s word like that!”

“Those aren’t the only interesting verses in the Bible. How about David cutting the foreskins off the Philistines’ penises? That’s in First Samuel.”

“Gross! Stop it. Where do you get this stuff?”

“Right from your Bible!”

The bell rang to start class, frustrating any response from her.

After school, I went to the room where the chess meet would take place. I sat with Mary, Erin, and Larry to wait for the Turpin bus to arrive. I had discussed in detail to Larry about the situation with Anna, and his advice was just to avoid her as much as possible. I agreed that was the right approach. Erin let Mary know that she was thinking of using the ‘strip chess’ tease against her opponent if it was a guy.

“You never know, Erin, you might be able to use it against a girl, too!” I smirked.

All four of us laughed.

When the kids from Turpin arrived, Anna was the last one to walk into the room. She saw me and frowned. Mr. Yockey, the advisor for the team, read off the pairings and Erin got her wish, and wasn’t paired with Anna, the only girl on the Turpin team.

Everyone took their seats, and I went around with the student from Turpin who was filling the same role I was for their team and checked all the boards and clocks. I heard Erin talking to her opponent, who turned bright red just as we came to her table. I smiled and nodded to her, and she smirked. When we came to Anna’s table, I decided I needed to be cordial.

“Hi, Anna,” I said, careful to keep my voice as neutral as possible.

“Hi, Steve,” she answered neutrally, as well.

Nothing else was said, and we moved on to the last table. When we were sure everything was set, we let the coaches know and Mr. Yockey said, “Play!”

At that point, our job was to simply watch and respond to questions or challenges. If there was a rules concern, the two of us were to confer and agree if possible, if not, then the coaches would confer and try to agree. If they couldn’t, then they could place a phone call to a neutral coach for a decision. Nothing like that happened during the meet, and I had never seen that happen when I was on the team. With no problems, all there was for us to do was make sure the results were properly tallied. Milford won the meet 5-2. Anna won her game against Brent, as did a Senior guy on their team who beat Bill Watt.

After the meet, there were refreshments. I was a bit surprised when Anna came over to where I was standing.

“Do you have a minute?” she asked.

“Sure, what’s up?”

“Can we go out in the hall?”

“Yes,” I said and walked out with her.

“I’m sorry I hung up on you. I was upset, but I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You don’t need to apologize to me. I was way out of line with what I did. I hope you can see your way clear to forgive me.”

“I do forgive you. That doesn’t change things, though.”

“I didn’t expect it to. I made a huge mistake, and I used you.”

“Yes, you did. I’m sorry it turned out this way. I really liked you and I thought we were really good together.”

“I thought so, too.”

I was surprised when she hugged me, and I carefully returned the hug, and then walked back into the classroom.

I barely had time to even wonder about what might have been when Erin and Mary came out smiling.

“Hey, Steve, I was talking to Mary,” Erin smirked. “Want to play some chess with us?”

“Chess?” I asked with a raised eyebrow. “First of all, Mary has a boyfriend. Second, I’m taking things very slowly right now.”

“Steve Adams is turning down a threesome?” Mary asked quietly. “No way!”

“Mary, you know I have to turn you down no matter what. You know my rule. I’d turn Melanie down, too.”

“Oh, poo!” Mary said.

Erin and I both laughed.

I gave Erin, Cindy, and Mary a ride home, half expecting the three of them to gang up on me. I was glad when they all behaved because I had enough complications at the moment. When I arrived home, Stephanie pulled me aside.

“Debbie V wants you to come by after dinner.”

“Did you say something to her, Squirt?”

“No! She told me on the bus she wants you to come over.”

“OK.”

After dinner, I let Dad know I was going for a walk, and when I went out the front door, I saw Debbie C in her driveway, getting into the car. She waved me over.

“I’m in labor!” she said with a grimace.

“Good luck, Debbie! I can’t wait to see your little tyke!” I said, squeezing her hand and closing the door for her.

Her mom came out carrying a bag, tossed it in the car, got in, and quickly backed out of the driveway. I waved as she began pulling away, then walked down to Debbie V’s house and rang the bell. She opened the door, grabbed my hand, and led me upstairs to her room.

“You haven’t even really spoken to me except to say ‘hi’ when you pick me up or ‘bye’ when you drop me off,” she complained.

“Honestly, it’s just that I’ve been busy, and a bit preoccupied. During the week is tough because I have stuff after school almost every day and then I have to do homework. Sundays are pretty much booked up with my business that I’m running with Beth Pater.”

“What about Sunday mornings? How about a regular play date?” she giggled.

“‘Play date’? That’s sounds like a lot of fun! This Sunday I’m busy, but after this week, yes, I’m interested in a regular play date. Beth doesn’t come over until after lunch. What if we go out to breakfast, then go to a place I know we’ll be alone? I’ll have you home by 11:00am or so.”

“Perfect. Do you have time now?”

“Well, I do have homework, but you’re WAY more interesting than physics homework!”

Debbie giggled and quickly stripped off her clothes. I locked the door and quickly took off my clothes.

“On your back, right now!” Debbie ordered.

I got onto her bed and lay on my back. Debbie straddled my legs and lowered her mouth and gently sucked on my quickly hardening dick. She moved up and began to grind her pussy on my hard shaft and bent down to kiss me. After a quick kiss, she held my dick and quickly impaled herself on it, sinking all the way down in one smooth motion, sighing loudly when I was fully embedded in her.

“It’s my turn to fuck you!” she said as she began to hump up and down.

I pulled her down to me and latched onto one of her nipples, sucking and licking softly as she bounced on me. She moved one of her hands between us and began rubbing herself. A moment later, she sat up, pushed down hard and furiously rubbed herself. She groaned, and I felt her pussy spasm hard around my dick. I moved my hands to her firm breasts and squeezed them, and her nipples pressed hard into my palms.

When her orgasm passed, Debbie began moving up and down again, working herself up towards another orgasm. I pulled her down again and sucked her other nipple into my mouth. This time, I moved my hand between us and gently rubbed her clit. Debbie moaned into my mouth, then broke the kiss.

“A little harder and faster!”

I did as she asked and she sat up, arched her back and groaned loudly, her pussy grabbing me tight. I moved my hands to her hips and began humping as her orgasm subsided, bringing myself to the point of no return. I pulled her down tight on me, groaned, and blasted several jets of cum deep into her.

Debbie bent down to kiss me and then lay down flat on me, her legs on either side of mine, my dick still embedded in her. She started grinding against me, so I grabbed her butt, one hand squeezing each cheek, and pulled her hard against me. Debbie was moaning softly as her orgasm neared. She ground a bit harder and her pussy squeezed my softening dick out of her as she came.

She moved halfway off me, one leg between mine, with half her body resting on mine, and snuggled close. We lay there for a few minutes and she got up.

“I should let you go do your physics homework,” she giggled. “We just did human anatomy!”

“OK if I shower? I don’t want anyone at home being suspicious!”

“Sure. Grab a towel from my closet. I don’t have a robe for you unless you want the pink one there!”

“A towel will be fine!” I chuckled, grabbing one from the closet, wrapping it around my waist.

I opened the door and walked down the hall to the bathroom, just as Tracy, Debbie’s little sister, came out of her room.

“It sounded like you two were having a lot of fun!” she teased.

“It’s possible,” I smirked, and relieved that I’d covered up.

“You could do that with me anytime too, if you wanted to!” she whispered and skipped down the hall.

I shook my head and went and took a quick shower, making absolutely sure I had locked the door. When I finished, I carefully wrapped the towel around me and went back to Debbie’s room to dress.

“Your little sister just offered to fool around with me!”

She smirked, “I guess I should have warned you! But I know your rule and she won’t be fourteen until January. I told her about that, but she says she’s ready right now!”

“I’m sticking with my rule. Besides, I have you and don’t want to upset you.”

“Why would it upset me? As long as she doesn’t try to interfere with our dates, go ahead, do it with her. You and I are just having fun, after all.”

I kissed her and then got dressed. She put on her robe to walk me to the door, we kissed and I told her I’d see her in the morning for school, then walked home.

“She sure put a smile on your face!” Stephanie said with a grin.

“Yeah, she does do that!”

“You should have gone there the other night. Much better than the other option!” she giggled.

“Oh, shut up, Squirt!” I chuckled and headed to my room to do homework.

On Thursday in chemistry class, I didn’t let up on Kara.

“Kara, I have more for you.”

“Just shut up and leave me alone,” she hissed.

I dropped a slip of paper in front of her.

Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself and put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. It shall be when he lies down, that you shall notice the place where he lies, and you shall go and uncover his feet and lie down; then he will tell you what you shall do.

“You do know what that means, don’t you, Kara? It means she’s supposed to take his clothes off and have sex with him!”

“It most certainly does not! It says to uncover his feet and do what he says.”

“In the Hebrew of 2 Kings 18, urine is called ‘the water of their feet’. Last I checked, piss doesn’t come out of my feet! So, what did Naomi tell Ruth to uncover? And if she uncovers his genitals, what do you think he’s going to tell her to do?”

“You’re disgusting! I can’t believe you. Just stop it and leave me alone!” she whispered with a flustered frown.

Flustered was good, and if that caused her to stop acting ‘holier than thou’, I’d be happy, though I wasn’t convinced anything could change that. Well, not anything she’d actually do, anyway.

Thursday after school I went to the Junior High and sat in the computer lab, answering questions and helping anyone who needed help. Krista was there and made a point of sitting and talking to me. She was spending far more time talking to me than working on her program, and I pointed that out to her. She reluctantly went back to the computer.

Friday in chemistry, Kara tried to strike back.

The Play Room Chapter 5 Endgame

Karen pulled her lover’s face to hers for a deep, tongue-filled kiss. She pulled away, still breathing heavily, and panted softly, “I could feel each shot of your cum into me... it felt so hot!”Kirk nuzzled her neck, still intoxicated by her aroma. “Cumming inside you was so intense!”“I can still feel you throbbing inside me, baby. You did me so good!” She rubbed his back all over. “I can feel you dripping out of me… Where’s that towel you had?”Kirk happened to be kneeling on it, so he handed...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 78 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part II

May 15, 1992, Glencoe, Illinois “Join me in my study, if you would,” Noel Spurgeon said when we finished our dessert. It had been an interesting evening. Samantha and I had talked for a bit before we’d been summoned to dinner. The meal had been prepared by a chef and was served by a white-coated young man. Again, this was a far cry from Lois at the van Hoeks’ house. What wasn’t a far cry was the fact that I was having dinner with a man who knew I was going to be sleeping with his daughter...

June 23, 1994, Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan My first week in Japan flew by, and a routine developed. Sakurako would wake me; I’d exercise and run, then shower and have breakfast, and share tea with Sakurako. After breakfast, I’d meditate, and then have my training session. After lunch, I’d work in the garden, or, as I had this day, wash the floors in the house. Hiroshi would accompany me back to the cottage and we’d talk while I washed up and dressed for dinner. After dinner, I’d spend...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 5 Housemates

August 1981, Chicago, Illinois On Sunday morning, I made my usual call to Karin. I described everything in the apartment and all the things I’d done during the week, including the reception. Both of us would start school in a week and we were both looking forward to it. When we finished talking, I went out for my run, showered, and ate breakfast. I made some tea, started a load of laundry, and then turned on the stereo. I put on an REO Speedwagon album and then relaxed on the couch with the...

July, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I woke up early on the First of July, because my body clock was still set to Swedish time. June 1977 When I got home, I grabbed a Coke and some chips and went right to my room. I didn’t think I could deal with my parents or Jeff or Stephanie. I just needed to be by myself. June 1977 Friday ended up being a non-event. The more I thought about it, the more I was sure that there was no way on this earth I could say what happened between Birgit and me was a sin. Calling it a sin would debase it into a meaningless act. I could never do that. And the more I thought about Jennie McGrath, the more sure I was that I couldn’t call what she did for me a sin, either. If the church was right, I was going to hell. “So, how should we do these Stone’s songs?” Phil asked at our rehearsal session. “I think we all know the music, we just need to come up with a pretty awesome arrangement; we don’t want to sound like yet another cheap cover band.” “I had some ideas, if it’s okay for me to make some suggestions,” Allison said. “Of course it is,” Phil said. “Everyone can have a say, there’s no rule that says you can’t participate in the discussion.” “Thanks, Phil, I guess being the newest here, I’m a bit...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 5 MichelleChapter 77 Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous Part I

May 11, 1992, Chicago, Illinois Monday was turning out to be a LONG day. After my run and talk with Gina, and my talk with Elyse, I had a full day at the office scheduled. First was our leadership meeting in the morning, and then I had status meetings with each team. At lunch I’d gone to see Siobhán and explained that I was going to break off the sexual relationship, but that I wanted to remain friends. She was disappointed, but admitted that Thursday would have been the last time, since she...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 23 So Now You Turn Back Into Diana Prince

January 19, 1989, En-Route from LAX to ORD When the engines of the plane started, Jeri reached over and took my hand. She held it while we pushed away from the gate, and taxied for takeoff. Her grip tightened a bit as we hurtled down the runway, but nothing like the death grip she’d had on my arm for the flight out. The plane roared its way into the air and once we leveled out, Jeri’s grip loosened but she didn’t let go of my hand. “How are you doing?” I asked with a touch of...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 34 Old Routines and New Ideas

September 1982, Chicago, Illinois The weekend was quiet and besides homework, I worked on the program changes for Frank, called Karin, Tatyana, and Kara, and hung out with my usual study group. Monday was refreshingly normal. On Tuesday morning, I handed Katy my completed intake form. She put it in an envelope and stuck it in her bag. She said she’d let me know soon about the interview. On Tuesday afternoon, after having lunch with Stephie, I made my rounds and then I headed over to Sigma...

A WellLived Life Book 7 Kara IIChapter 35 An Interview and Some New Friends

October 1982, Chicago, Illinois The drive back to Chicago was as uneventful as usual, and I arrived at the apartment just before 6:00pm. When I arrived, Elyse and Stephie were sitting on the couch and Jackie was sitting on the loveseat. Stephie hopped up as I opened the door and greeted me with a hug and a kiss. “Hi, Peaches!” I said. “Glad you’re home, Yankee!” “Hi, Steve,” Elyse and Jackie both said. “Hey,” I replied. “How was the weekend?” “Well, it was just Kurt with me, Stephie,...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 3 JessicaChapter 52 Lifestyle Choices

June 11, 1989, Chicago, Illinois It was just after 3:00am when I kissed Trish goodbye. She’d been an enthusiastic, energetic, and adventurous lover. We’d done just about anything either of us could think of, though her breasts weren’t large enough for a tit-fuck. The last time had been in the shower where we’d ostensibly gone to clean up afterwards, but instead I ended up taking her from behind as she leaned against the wall of the shower. “I think I’ll have you again, Steve Adams,” she...

A WellLived Life Book 1 BirgitChapter 38 Freshman Year Ends

May 1978 The first couple of weeks in May were busy with school, work, and friends. Except for Becky, I didn’t even have any dates. But I was OK with that. Well, almost OK. I wanted to see Anna, but it likely wasn’t going to happen until school was out. I had tutoring sessions with Melanie, but she still wouldn’t talk to me about anything other than Spanish. Barely a hello. I was grateful for the tutoring, but it was maddening seeing my friend this way. I hoped someday she could understand...

A WellLived Life Book 6 Kara IChapter 44 Spring Break 1982 Part I

March, 1982, Milford, Ohio As I drove along I-65, I thought about what Stephanie had asked for and what Bethany had said without even knowing about the request. Of course, because Bethany and I were so in tune, she might have actually had an idea that I was struggling with getting involved with my sister again. I kept turning it over and over in my mind and I kept coming to the same conclusion — that I shouldn’t do it. I was torn between doing what Stephanie wanted and doing what Kara and...

September 7, 1992, Chicago, Illinois “That went reasonably well,” Michelle said when her parents drove off. “There were a few times I thought my expression would give away something I shouldn’t. You were messing with me, weren’t you?” She grabbed both my hands and smiled, “I was telling the truth, in my own way. Thank you!” She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “So, what’s left?” I asked. “To visit UofC tomorrow and formally withdraw from classes. To spend some time with you and your...

October 1981, Chicago, Illinois I arrived back at the apartment just before 10:00pm and saw the address for the party. I decided I wasn’t particularly interested in going so I put on some music, poured myself a glass of wine, and started reading more about Russia. I was alternating between the history and culture book and the Communist Party book, decided on the history and culture book for this time. I didn’t get much reading done because I was thinking about Tatyana, which led me to...

January 23, 1996, Chicago, Illinois “Father, bless!” I said, greeting Father Basil with upturned palms. “Bless you, Stephen,” he said as I kissed his hand. The waiter showed us to a quiet table along the wall of Roditys in Greektown. He took our drink orders and was back quickly. We placed our food orders right away and he left to put them in with the kitchen. “I’m not quite sure how to address this, so I’m just going to ask you bluntly. Are you the father of Michelle’s baby?” I shook my...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 8 NIKAChapter 68 The Rules

June 29, 1995, Chicago, Illinois On Thursday, I finally had lunch with Melissa again, something I hadn’t been looking forward to. Much like with Cèlia, Melissa and I had passed an inflection point and I was left with sub-optimal paths forward. I’d been struggling with the possible solutions, and all of them had pitfalls. When I walked into Takumi, I had something of a plan. Whether it was good or not would only be known once everything played out. “I spoke to my wives,” I said after we’d...

December 5, 2000, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota “I had a good time last night,” I said. “I was surprised you invited a friend!” Mary laughed as we walked into the exam room, “Naomi had a good time as well. You know what a Resident’s life is like.” I nodded, “No social life.” “Exactly. You guys seemed to hit it off pretty well.” “Yes, but I’m not here for that!” “You’re everywhere for that, and you know it!” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let’s just say that you hit the sweet spot -...

A WellLived Life Book 3 PiaChapter 25 The Puzzle and the Cat Part II

March 1980, Hovås/Göteborg, Sweden I woke early as usual, but just enjoyed being in bed with Katt. When she woke, she hopped out of bed and pulled a robe out of her closet and handed it to me. “There’s a spare toothbrush in the bathroom. Go have your shower, then we’ll have breakfast after I have my shower.” I quickly showered and brushed my teeth, and went back to Katt’s room. She went to shower and came back a few minutes later. She dressed, and I got a very good look at her sexy body...

I spent most of my time acting as a manservant to Sensei Robert and Sensei Hiro.” “He who will lead, must first serve,” I said. “Someday, I’m going to send you to Sensei Hiro, should he live long enough. October 29, 2000, Chicago, Illinois Birgit followed me as far as the stairs, then scooted upstairs when I went to the front door and opened it. “Hi!” Sophie said. “Hi!” I replied and held the door open so she could come into the house. I closed the door behind her then led her to my study where I waited until she went in, and then walked in, closing the door behind me. I nodded to one of the wingback chairs, she sat down in one, and I sat down in the other. “Is something wrong?” she...

A WellLived Life Book 8 StephieChapter 61 Anala Part II

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois I walked in the near 90°F heat to Carla’s place. I was grateful that the humidity of the morning had dropped significantly; otherwise the heat would have been unbearable. By the time I walked up the steps to the apartment over the photography studio and knocked on her door, I had broken into a light sweat. Carla answered almost immediately and invited me inside her studio apartment. The air was moderately cool, and the window air conditioner was running full...

July 1982, Milford, Ohio On Tuesday morning, I kissed Kara goodbye and headed to my parents’ house for my usual morning routine with my little sister. She was happy that I could spend the morning with her and asked to take a walk, so we weren’t in the house with my mom. “Let me guess — this walk will end in the clearing,” I said with a smile. “Yes,” she said, taking my hand as we walked down Overlook towards Klondyke. March 13, 1994, Chicago, Illinois “Hi, Steve!” Ailea said when she opened the door. “Hi,” I replied, accepting the offered hug. There was no touching of lips, just of cheeks, and I wondered if I’d misread her intentions at her birthday lunch, or if, perhaps, she detected my reluctance to return the offered affection. “Lunch is ready, so go ahead and sit. I’ll bring it in from the kitchen.” I went to the low table, sat down, and a minute later, Ailea brought miso soup and sushi, our usual...

A WellLived Life 2 Book 10 BridgetChapter 72 An Explosive Discovery

April 3, 1997, Dallas, Texas “Remember what I said about drinking too much,” I said, as I poured bourbon into three cups. We’d stopped at a liquor store, bought a bottle of Blanton’s, and then returned to the small suite I’d reserved at the Westin. Deborah’s room was down the hall, and Krissy’s was two floors below. Krissy’s comment had caught me a bit off guard, but I hadn’t reacted visibly. I didn’t know her quite well enough to know if she’d been teasing with Deborah, so I was being...

September 1, 1987, Chicago, Illinois “I heard that you have some kind of plan to help Ed,” I said to Connie. “There’s no plan,” she replied. “A witness who saw the shopkeeper alive after Ed left came forward.” That sounded convenient, and I wondered if the witness was real or someone that Anthony had put forward to solve the problem. Certainly, the videotape was real, because I couldn’t imagine how Anthony could have faked that, but the witness? Who knew? “So is he being released? Or is...

August 17, 1997, Chicago, Illinois We finished lunch and Marissa and the younger kids went to play, but Natalie sat with the adults to talk, with coffee, tea, or soft drinks. The Sarcus were very comfortable, but the Heaths were still struggling. But, vitally, they hadn’t left and hadn’t insisted Natalie leave the group. “Can you explain how you developed this attitude and approach?” Chris asked. July 1979 — Falkenberg, Sweden On Friday, when I got back from my run, Pam was in her bra and panties again. I whistled at her, she giggled, then finished dressing. I showered, and we went to breakfast and finished up our last day. Once class was done, we were pretty much free. On Saturday, we’d have several optional activities and then on Sunday we’d head back to our host families. After dinner on Friday, I took Pam’s hand and we walked towards the river. November 8, 1993, Chicago, Illinois A dark fog swirled before my eyes as I tried to take stock. My head hurt, badly. I felt something on my face and realized, dimly, it was an oxygen mask. My right hand was uncomfortable and I recognized the feeling of an IV and pulse-oximeter. My left arm ached fiercely. On my chest I felt the pads and wires of an EKG. I didn’t feel anything else wrong as I continued taking inventory. I tried to open my eyes, but the fog didn’t clear. I tried to speak, but...

August, 1983, Chicago, Illinois In the morning Anala and I ran as we had the previous time, then showered together, carefully washing each other’s bodies in an intimate but non-sexual way. After our shower we went to the kitchen and I made breakfast and we sat down to eat. “Steve, may I make a suggestion?” she asked. “Sure.” “Broaden your circle of friends.
