I recalled standing in the gymnasium of the local high school for the second time in my life about six months prior. I had again been a chaperone at the Junior-Senior Prom; only a thousand circumstances had changed in my life in the intervening year.
Penny had all but finished her sophomore year in high school. Again, she was Bill’s date to the prom, joined by her BFF Misty. Penny was also her sophomore class president. Doug had come by where I stood with Crystal and Megan and we chatted again. He was a graduating senior and about as hunky and studly as they come. Crystal was a junior, and Megan a sophomore, and they looked gorgeous – right out of Penthouse magazine, but with clothes on. My parents were eye rollers. They knew I’d more or less ‘shacked up’ with Joan, as my father called it, but when Carol came along and supposedly joined the fray as part of my ‘harem’, he rolled his eyes. My mother followed suit. They perfected the art of eye rolling early in their marriage.
The implication was that their adult son was making a bad decision. In fact, the whole situation was wonderful from our point of view. I laughed, a point that seemed to irritate both my parents.
I took that opportunity to recall to them my observations of their wife-swapping behavior a year-earlier at Christmas. I smiled, benignly, and told them that if they could play around, then so could I. I even hinted that we were swingers, without actually coming out and stating that fact. There were no further problems or eye rolling regarding our family. I left them with their jaws hanging open. I’d been blunt, and suggested that they enjoy another swap at their motel that night with Joan’s parents. Based on how much they blushed, I thought that might already be in the cards.
Carol loved all of us in my growing extended family – figuratively, emotionally, and literally.

Joan motored on in her work with the insurance company. Carol planned to stop working at the end of the next academic year or the baby; whichever came first. She wants to mother all of us for a bit before returning to academia.
The teens in our little swing group don’t want to break stride or lose touch with what they’ve already been participating in. Crystal, Megan, Penny, and Misty for the girls and Doug and Bill for the guys are all planning on attending the nearby university for their college education. Penny, Crystal, Megan, Susan, and Misty formed a babysitting service over that summer. It was Penny’s idea, aided with some suggestions from Carol. The students took a course at the local Red Cross before school ended, and then distributed prepared leaflets to every parent they could find in their neighborhoods. They had a set fee schedule, would do overnights and full days, and just about any combination. In some cases, they might double cover depending on the number of children and how active they were.
By the end of the first week, the five girls had more business than they could handle. They started to turn away a few jobs. Penny recruited a couple more junior girls and got them up to speed so the business could continue to grow unabated. The girls each put five percent of what they made in a kitty to be used to promote the business when things got slow. Misty proved to be a bit of a computer geek; she created some software to manage the babysitting business.
Both Penny and Misty left us for separate weeks during the summer to accompany a family as a live-in baby sitter and mother’s helper while the family went on vacation out of town. Penny assured me going and returning that there was no hanky-panky, but that she had caught the parents having sex one night. She’d watched from the shadows.
