Salvage
The next morning before returning to the ship to continue the salvage work the two sailors met with Kekoa. The old French Captain and Zack felt the need to do something to help protect the villages from the marauding pirates when they returned. During that time with Kekoa they also discussed what to do, and where to hide, when the pirates came back to the island. All three men felt it was not a question of if, but rather one of when the pirates would revisit the island. Eventually the discussion turned to what they also should salvage from the old warship.
When Kekoa told them he'd posted lookouts at both ends of the island, they said that was a good start. Beecher suggested that the chief consider posting a lookout on the peak of the mountain in the center of the island. The two sailors also suggested that Kekoa put more than one person in each lookout location. This way, if one of the natives had to return to warn the villagers someone would still be in the lookout.
Both sailors agreed with Kekoa that they would have sufficient time for a runner to run from the lookout to the village so he could warn the villagers, and then safely move them into the caves. Kekoa went on to explain how they could then block the openings to prevent any of the pirates from gaining access.
It was late afternoon, and the two sailors finally decided that they'd thought of as many ideas as they could to help the villager's prepare for a pirate attack. Both sailors wanted to return to The Elizabeth as soon as possible to see how much more they could salvage.
When the two sailors finally returned to the lagoon, and climbed aboard the old hulk, dusk was settling over the quiet bay. First they examined the top decks. They decided that the main deck had more than sufficient clear space to start staging everything that they wanted to take ashore. They also decided it was safe to start working on putting the yawl which they had found nestled in the hold, into the water.
After discussing the plans for the next day the natives decided to return to their village. At the same time the two sailors, along with Nani, would spend the night aboard the wrecked ship. With the hulk now firmly beached on the reef everyone agreed since the ship had washed up at high tide in the storm there was no danger of the waves sweeping it back to sea. The three people on board the derelict ship watched as the natives dove into the water of the lagoon to swim to shore.
Once they were alone Zack asked the Captain if his mate Loni was going to miss him. His comment was, "She'll miss me, but she'll be okay," which brought a grin to Zack's face. Zack remarked to his two friends, "I'm hungry, let's see what's for dinner." The old captain nodded his head and Zack continued, "I know where Captain Merick's stored his larder. Why don't we raid that first." Zack informed the Captain.
"Great idea," the French captain replied. He then added with hope in his words, "Perhaps we might find a small bottle of cognac. It has been so long since I had a taste, and I do believe it's what I miss more than anything else."
Zack laughed. "I think I can arrange that since I also know where they stored the cognac," Zack assured him and then added, "That's if the pirates didn't locate it first."
The two men went down into the galley to round-up some food and raided Merick's stash. Nani and Zack returned to the captains' quarters where Zack opened up Merick's private store of liquor still safe in its hidden location. There were several bottles of excellent cognac and Zack pulled out what he thought was the best of the lot. Nani looked around at the mess in the captain's quarters and then told Zack she wanted to stay behind and start to tidy up.
The Captain and Zack laid out a feast on the quarterdeck which was partially covered by one of the canvas sheets torn from the rigging. Zack had managed to find a couple of the octagonal poop lanterns which the storm and beach landing had miraculously left undamaged. He picked up one and lit the candle inside. After they laid out the food Zack went in search of Nani. He found her still working in the skipper's cabin and brought her up to the quarterdeck. The three of them all sat on barrels at a table Zack had constructed from some boards lying across an old keg.
The day had been long and all of them were very hungry which helped them enjoy their feast. As they ate Zack took great pleasure in introducing Nani to some of the different foods she had never tasted before. Finally the three of them leaned back; their tummy's full and happy. During his exploration of the ship Destand had found an old clay pipe, which they all felt was incredible since it hadn't been broken during the pirate's attack. Zack had found some tobacco in the captain's quarters and had presented it to Captain Destand. The old French captain filled the pipe using that tobacco.
After he firmly packed the pipe the captain fired it up and took a long draw. As he exhaled the smoke his face broke out in a big grin. "It has been a long time. This is wonderful. Thank you my friend."
In Merick's hidden storage locker Zack had also found crystal glasses, which he produced, and then poured cognac into three of the glasses. Destand took a sip, and then smacked his lips. He took another sip of the liquor and then another puff on his pipe. He grinned at the first mate. "Thank you again Mr. Beecher for tonight. It has been a very long time since I had these pleasures, and I feel I now owe you a favor there's no way I can ever repay. If I were to die tonight, I'd die a happy man. Perhaps you aren't aware, but this is an excellent cognac." Both men laughed and then Nani took one small sip of her cognac and coughed. Zack laughed when she told the two of them it tasted awful. She stood and told them they could drink her share since it was nothing she wanted to drink.
Destand took obvious pleasure from smoking the pipe, and Zack felt amused by his delight. The young first mate mused, "I never took up the smoking habit. I tried it once when we were visiting the Americas, but I didn't see what the big deal was. I just didn't care for it."
As the Captain puffed on the pipe he explained to Zack, "There's a plant that grows here on the islands the natives will pick and let dry. They smoke it because it acts as liquor does for us. I've tried it a few times; the feeling is OK but I'd rather have a dram of cognac. All things considered it isn't as pleasant as having a pipe of tobacco." The captain took another puff and let the smoke slowly drift out of his nostrils.
Nani came on deck said a couple of words and then motioned for Zack to follow her. Zack stood there until Destand informed him that she wanted him to go with her. As he moved down the ships corridor Zack noticed how clean the passageway was. When they stepped into the captain's quarters the young sailor was both surprised and pleased at how well Nani had cleaned up the room. In one corner Nani had a hammock hanging from hooks, which obviously had been there before. Zack looked around the cabin and to his amazement; there hanging on the beam was another octagonal lantern. This was another lantern that the pirates had inexplicably not destroyed as they looted the ship.
Nani motioned for Zack to climb on to the hammock, which he did, as she requested. After he settled in Nani shyly removed the piece covering her front and then quickly climbed on the hammock with Zack. She curled up against him and then slipped one leg over his. With her head on his shoulder and one of her arms across his chest, she took a deep breath and within seconds she was asleep.
Zack lay there for a long time. Between the short session in the lake and with Nani now curled up naked against his body, Zack was having a hard time ignoring the lovely woman nestled beside him. He remembered what the Captain told him about how Nani had received her scar. He recalled how she had fought off a pirates attack when the brigand tried to rape her and in return had received the scar on her cheek. The last thing Zack wanted do was frighten the young woman or dredge up old memories. He felt so grateful for everything she'd done for him ... for saving his life, and taking care of him. He wanted to make sure that he didn't create any problems. Zack feared that any sexual actions he might consider would alarm her and he felt extremely beholding to her; the last thing he'd want to do was to frighten her. It took a long time, but eventually he fell asleep with the lovely, naked, young native woman curled against him.
