The new Emir's attitude to women was totally in keeping with what the Chief Eunuch thought right and proper for the rules of Kobekistan, when he demanded and got respect from Djamilla and even threatened to have her whipped. Davina, the second wife had been a great favourite of the Emir Ibrahim in his youth, and he had married her when she presented him with a son. Then he thought better of it; the new Emir had shown no reluctance to deal with the women firmly and the Chief Eunuch had no doubt that he would not look kindly on a eunuch who appeared to be opposing his wishes, so he contented himself with telling the Emir that the girl spoke some French and it was all arranged; Maryam would have the honour of being the first to visit the new Master's bedroom.
