We headed for Hector Gonzalez's house by a roundabout route. We didn't want to get there too early in case he had a family with kids that we did not want to disturb. Now I understand that expression "collateral damage." Oh, well, if the SOB is going to ruin so many lives for his own profit, I guess I have to accept the fact that I could be hurting his family. Shit, though, I still hated to do it.
I swapped positions to let Mom drive so that I could more easily play with some of the electronic gadgets. Genie had come up with a phone tap that did not need a physical connection to the wires; all I had to do was point a special microphone at the telephone line and I could hear anything being said on it. Ha! Hector would probably go wild if he knew what his daughter was currently saying to her boyfriend, at least, I hope that it was her boyfriend. If she really does those things to/for him, he is a very lucky fellow. I am jealous! Damn, I need a girlfriend!
Well, she's shutting down now, so maybe I'll hear some business talk pretty soon. "Mom, park over there. We should attract less attention if we're parked than if we keep cruising by the same houses over and over." I put the phone tap on the speaker system so that we both could hear what was being said.
(Hector Gonzalez) "Man, I'm glad I caught you before you went out. I just got word late this afternoon that Maria has been singing to the cops like a bird. Something has really scared the shit out of her. I sure would like to know what it was, she was such a tough one. Anyway, she gave my name and yours to the cops, so you better ditch anything you have around that could be bad news. I'll be doing the same and lying low for a while until this blows over."
(Juan Alvera) "Thanks for the warning. I'll get right on it. I'll keep out of sight until you get back to me."
They talked about some inconsequential things and then hung up. Damn, it looks like I blew it. There's more to this crime fighting stuff than just bopping a few heads and calling the cops. I never gave a thought that there might be somebody in the police department that was selling information to crooks. As it stands, I have no way to find out who that person is. I need a contact inside the police department, myself. Maybe, then, we can trap the leak.
Oh, well, at least I did shut off some of the flow to the street, so I might have helped some. I do have some names that I can check on later, so it was not a complete waste of time.
About that time, Genie's special police scanner picked up word of a jewelry store and warehouse being robbed. Well, we can look into that, since everything else seems quiet right now. We headed down town and parked a couple of blocks away. I asked Genie, "Is there anything that you can tell me about the jewelry robbery?"
"Yes, the alarm came through from a beat cop who noticed something unusual going on. He investigated and appears to have been attacked. For some reason, he had not been heard from after posting that original report."
"OK, keep monitoring. In the meantime, please transport us to the roof of the building where the robbery is taking place. I think that we need to look around before we blunder in on something unexpected."
A moment later, we were standing on the roof of the jewelery store and warehouse. It is only a one-storey building, so there should be few surprises as we investigate further. There was nothing on the roof to interest us, but there was a panel truck parked at the loading dock at the rear of the building.
I leaned over the edge of the roof and lowered another one of Genie's magical gadgets down far enough to look in the windows of the truck. I checked both the driver's compartment and the main part of the van, and the truck was completely empty, so I figured that anybody associated with the truck must be inside the building.
"Genie, please transport us to a safe place inside the store so that we can look around in there." A moment later, we were standing in an empty closet, but we could hear activity just on the other side of the door. We could hear at least two men talking, but they were too hushed for us to make out words.
"Genie, I think now is the time for your latest joke on the crooks. Please join us in the persona of Komodo." We had been having some fun with this little treat. Komodo was eight feet tall and weighed in at 520 pounds of muscle. His costume bore the likeness of the worst demon that you could possibly imagine. I think that the Devil, himself, would have cringed at the sight. Genie had no trouble multitasking, so he could look after us and still play at being a giant among giants. We were all looking forward to the fun we could have with this addition to our crew.
We went out the door of the closet and saw two men standing over a body and discussing the action that they could take. Shit, this was no time for us to fool around! The body on the floor was that of the cop, who was a woman. She had been shot in the crotch and both breasts. The shooter was a real piece of work—he obviously had aimed for her pussy with his first shot and, when she fell, had pulled aside her body armor and shot her once in each nipple. The cop was still alive, but just barely. Genie said that he could save her if he got on it right away, so I told him to go ahead, while Mom and I went to work on the two perps.
Man, were we pissed! We proceeded to beat the living shit out of those two worms and left them hanging by their ankles to the sprinkler pipe overhead. They could not possibly escape before the rest of the cops got there, so we left them to their well deserved misery. Mom and I dropped off three figurines and drove home.
Genie had reported that he and the cop were in one of the upstairs bedrooms, and we could meet him there. The cop was lying on the bed, dressed in one of Mom's nightgowns, and drinking some coffee. Considering the way she had looked the last time I had seen her, the woman looked to be the picture of health. Mom and I were absolutely astounded by the transformation. Genie told us that she was completely recovered, physically, but would need three to four weeks of intense supervised rehab before her body really believed it. He said that the easiest way to handle this was for the woman to undergo her rehab at our home with Genie to supervise and Mom and me to do a lot of the actual work. The woman had already agreed, so all he needed was for Mom and me to sign on, which we did.
The cop's name was Barbara (Babs) O'Rourke. She had just recently graduated from the police academy and this was her first night to be on patrol alone. She had been driving by the jewelry store and warehouse when she saw a suspicious flash of light inside. She called in what she had seen and had just entered the building when she was shot the first time. She didn't remember anything after that until waking up in bed in our house.
Babs had been shot with wadcutter bullets, a really vicious type of ammunition to use against somebody. The wadcutter is kind of the ultimate dum-dum slug, so it would make the maximum amount of damage on flesh. It looked to us like the shooting had been, at least in part, a sexual attack by a true sociopath. If he survived prison, I planned to look him up when he got out.
Babs called her father, Capt. James O'Rourke, at the police department to tell him that she had survived the shooting, but that she was undergoing some special experimental surgery, so she didn't want him to see her for a few days. She promised to call him every day with a progress report. He wasn't happy, but there was not much he could do about it.
Anytime Genie wanted to branch out, he had a sure winner in plastic surgery. Babs had been a living, breathing prototype for the female lead in any wet dream, and Genie had restored her looks to the original magnificent model. The shooter had deliberately tried to mess up Babs appearance, but Genie had done a monumental job of fixing all that. All we needed now, was to convince Babs that the surgery had been a success.
There had been very little muscle damage except to Babs vagina and associated muscles, and Genie had restored that. However, Babs was sure that she would never be a desirable sex partner because she just "knew" that those muscles had been damaged. That was where Genie wanted to concentrate his therapy, and guess who was to do the actual work. Yeah, I was volunteered! To paraphrase slightly, "Its a wonderful job and somebody has to do it!"
