As he walked through the camp he noticed one of the younger boys. He was bigger than the others, and Fighting Hawk watched as he took a toy from one of the smaller children. The boy asked for his britches back, and Fighting Hawk pitched them to him. He then told the boy to take him to his lodge.
On the way to the lodge he asked the boy; "Was it right for me to take your britches?" He heard the embarrassment and anger in the boy's words, "No! They were mine, and everybody saw you do that to me." Fighting Hawk smiled as he answered him, "Yes, but I was bigger and stronger, and I could. Just like you did; right in front of everybody, so that they could see it." The boy looked up sharply at him, he was not as sure of himself and the anger wasn't as strong, "But that was different" Fighting Hawk shook his head and said, "It was only different because it happened to you, and not somebody else. What is right is right for everybody, and what is wrong is wrong for everybody. Before you do anything, think about how you would feel and if you would like it to happen to you, and then go ahead."
The boy looked up at him, "What I did wasn't right, but what you did wasn't right either." Fighting Hawk smiled and said, "No, it wasn't, but you wouldn't have listened to me if I didn't show you that it was wrong, would you?" The boy didn't answer, but shook his head.
When they approached a small lodge at the side of the village Fighting Hawk recognized one of the widows, and knew from the look on her face that it was not the first time that he had been brought to her. She looked tired, and sad as she stood before Fighting Hawk and lowered her head. It was something that happened when you had to live at the expense of others. Before she could speak Fighting Hawk said, "So, is this young man the man of the lodge?" The question surprised her and made her pause. She nodded, but kept her head demurely lowered.
"This young man has impressed me with his ability to see the truth in things. I think that one day he will be a good warrior." For the first time, the woman raised her head and looked into his eyes. She looked to see if he mocked her. When she saw that he was serious she had a look of pride, as she once again lowered her head. "You are very kind to say such things, but he causes me great trouble." Fighting Hawk laughed as he said, "Yes, great men cause great trouble as young boys. I only wish that I had caused more myself." He watched as she puffed up a little bigger.
Fighting Hawk then said, "Tomorrow, with the first rays of the sun I will be going hunting. I wonder if your son would like to go with me. It will not be an easy job, and he will have to work hard, but of course I would be willing to share what we kill." He had not expected the reaction that he got. "If you wish to give me charity, leave it at my lodge door in the night. Don't come here and make me beg you."
Fighting Hawk was surprised at her reaction. "If you don't want your son hunting with me, I understand. But what I said is true. We will hunt and he will work hard, and he will earn everything that he gets from me. I offer you no charity. You have offended me." Fighting Hawk held his ground and waited for her words.
"I am sorry Fighting Hawk that I have offended you. If he will earn his share I would be honored for him to hunt with you. Charity is a dark stain on my soul, and it turns my words bitter. You are a good man, and your women let me hold my head up after I take your meat. You deserve better from me."
Fighting Hawk saw the pain in her face and smiled at her. "I accept your apology. I will never offer charity to anyone. If they want charity, then they will have to come to me and ask for it. If I come to you, I will get something for my trouble, there will be no charity between us."
He saw the pride return to her face, and she nodded. She looked to her son with pride again. "Big Cloud will be ready with the first rays of the sun." Fighting Hawk nodded and turned to leave.
That night in his blankets Fighting Hawk saw the stars in all their glory. Events had not worked well to spend much time with them, but they made sure that this night was not to be the same. He had barely settled into his blankets when Midnight Star slipped naked beside him. She was followed quickly by Morning Star. They worked together and stripped him before he knew that it had happened. Their hunger was clear on their faces.

He smiled at them as he moved to get his hunting gear.
He saw Moon Flower's eyes peeking from the blanket, where she snuggled with Bright Dove. He whispered to her, "I am going hunting with a young man in the village. I will be back in the afternoon." She nodded, but didn't move. He kissed a finger and touched it to her cheek, and then turned to leave the lodge.
He walked silently through the village. The sky was light, but it was still a little before the first rays of the sun. He loved this time of the day. It was peaceful and quiet. He sat before the lodge and waited. He watched the birds, and listened to the sounds of the village waking up. At the first rays of the sun, the lodge flaps parted and an excited boy emerged. He saw Fighting Hawk sitting at the cook fire. He had added a few sticks of wood while he waited, and it was warm by the fire.
Fighting Hawk watched as his mother followed him out of the lodge. She was surprised to see that he was waiting, and that he had got the fire going again. Fighting Hawk waited until she was sure that her son was ready to go. As he rose she said, "Thank you, it means a lot to him. You will look after him, won't you?" Fighting Hawk smiled and nodded, and then they were off.
Big Cloud had wanted to run, but Fighting Hawk explained that they were going hunting, and that the noise of running would scare the game. Big Cloud immediately settled in to a cautious walk beside Fighting Hawk. He tried to walk quietly, but found that he constantly stepped on twigs and brush, even when he was sure that they weren't there before he put his foot down. He was amazed that Fighting Hawk never looked down, and he never seemed the step on anything that would make a sound.
