“Uh, yeah,” Jack answered nearly dropping the carton of milk.
Watching her father, she realized that he wasn’t that good at showing his emotions. From what she had heard while they were in the room, it was obvious that he had been very pleased with the surprise. She wondered why she had never noticed that before now. Feeling a little sad by the years of misunderstanding, she said, “I’m happy now.”
“Good,” he answered wondering what had provoked that comment.
Knowing that he had no idea what she was talking about, she said, “I mean that I’m really happy now that I’ve gotten to know you better. Up until now, it was like I was living half a life.”
Jack finished pouring his milk and returned the carton to the refrigerator before replying. He wasn’t used to talking about his feelings, but knew this was one of those times when it was probably required. He replied, “I’m a lot happier too.”
“I can tell. I guess that I’ve never known the real Jack McCullum,” Lisa said watching her father.
Puzzled by the comment, he took a seat at the table and a sip of his milk while trying to figure out how to answer. The delay in responding to her comment made Lisa wonder if she had said something wrong. There were times when her insecurities still rose up and nagged at her.
Unaware of the little twinge of doubt that ate at Lisa, he answered, “There isn’t that much to know. I’m a man who works hard to support his family and that’s about it.”

“I’m just a man. That’s what men do to relax. We build things,” Jack said as if he was explaining the obvious.
Lisa realized that Jack meant a lot more when he described himself as being a man than just identifying his gender. It was a major revelation to her. She knew that she could use talking about men as a way to get him to talk about himself. She said, “I guess I’ve never understood what it is that makes a man a man. Could you explain it to me?”
Now that he wasn’t the subject of discussion, Jack relaxed and said, “Well, men are just men. I don’t know if I can really explain it. We are what we do, I guess.
“We like to work with our hands and build things. Some men like to fix cars, others like to work with metal, and some of us like to work with wood. I like working with wood.
“Men like to go out into nature. Some men hunt, some fish, and others play golf. Now, there’s a bunch of boys that like riding their dirt bikes. It’s all the same thing. It’s a chance for a man to get outdoors and relax. I never understood those guys that like to go to ballets and operas. It makes me wonder if they are really men.
