There was a quiet but insistent tapping on the window.

“Freeman,” came a whispered voice from outside. “Let me in!”

“Huh!” I thought.

The tapping came again.

“Freeman! Wake up! Let me in!”

Sam stirred and his eyes popped open.

I cupped my hand over his mouth before he could say anything.

“Come on, Freeman. Wake up! Let me in!” whispered the voice.

I rolled out of bed and shuffled to the window.

The dim glow of the night light gave me enough vision to move around the room without tripping.

Pushing aside the curtain, I peered out but all I could see was a dark shape leaning against the window.

Then she put her face up against the window.

It was Laura DiMartino.

“Huh!” I said. “What the...”

She tapped on the window again.

“Come on, let me in. I’m freezing my ass off out here.”

I sighed and shook my head. Then I grabbed the key from its hiding place and unlocked the window.

I slid the window open.

“Laura? Laura DiMartino? What the heck are you doing?”

“Catch!” she said and thrust a small backpack into my face. Then she crawled, head first, through the window and slid down to the floor. She kind of folded up awkwardly on the floor as she landed head first. Then she started giggling as she clumsily untangled herself.

I stood looking down at her. I couldn’t make out a lot of detail in the dim light but she looked unkempt and she looked drunk. I guess the inane giggling was also a bit of a clue. She was wearing black tightly-fitting jeans and a grey hoodie with the hood pushed back.

She slumped back against the wall with her legs splayed out and muttered something that I didn’t hear. I dropped the bag into her lap and slid the window closed again.

I glanced over at Sam who was propped up in bed and watching curiously. I shrugged at him and then squatted in front of Laura.

“Laura, what the heck are you doing?”

“I ran away from home! I couldn’t take it anymore, so I ran away. Those asshole parents of mine want to send me to a military boarding school. Can you believe that? Military school! Can you see me marching back and forth like a fucking soldier? What a joke!”

“I admit that doesn’t seem very much like you,” I said.

I had to put my stone face on and keep my voice steady. I really wanted to laugh at her.

“Totally!” said Laura. “So I slipped a couple of sleeping pills into that nosy nanny’s coffee and made a run for it.”

“So you ran away? I guess that will prove how mature you are!”

“Right!” she said, clearly missing my sarcasm. “That will show them!”

“And you came here – to me!”

“Yeah! You’re the only friend I’ve got left, Freeman. Those other bitches totally shafted me. I knew you’d help me out.”

“I’m not your friend, Laura. My sister...”

“Don’t talk to me about your sister,” Laura cut me off. “She’s totally cracked. But you’re not cracked. You and her – you’re totally different.”

“Uh huh!” I said.

The wicked part of me wanted to agree with her about my sister being cracked, but I didn’t say anything.

“I can sleep here in your room for a few nights,” she said.

I sighed. Then I lowered myself down and sat cross legged in front of her. I watched as she reached into her bag and produced a large plastic bottle of cola that was half full.

“Ta da!” she said. “I liberated some of Daddy’s best scotch.”

“I see you had your priorities straight!” I said.

I really must learn to keep a lid on my sarcasm – especially when I’m talking to somebody who’s not in a condition to appreciate it.

She unscrewed the cap and took a swig. Then she held it out to me.

“Have some, Freeman. It will put some hair on your chest!”

“No thanks, Laura, “ I said as I pushed the bottle away. Besides – I know it’s a figure of speech, but – hair on my chest? Eeew!

“Fuck Freeman, “ she moaned. “Do we have to go through this every time. You always say no and you always end up giving in. Don’t be such a drama queen.”

I forced a little smile at her. “This time I think it might end up differently. Like you said before, I’m totally different from my sister.”

“Huh?” said Laura. Then she decided my comment was too complicated to figure out and gave up.

She took another swig from the bottle and then suddenly sputtered.

“Who the fuck is that?” she asked, pointing at the bed.

I looked over and saw Sam watching from the bed. He was lying there and watching without saying anything.

“That’s my cousin, Sam,” I said. “Sam is sleeping over for the night.”

“Hey, Sam!” said Laura. “Sam – Samantha! That’s a nice name. I wish my name was Samantha. What sort of asshole parents call their daughter Laura? Blech!”

I sighed and shook my head. “Sam, this is Laura. She’s a friend of Tara. She’s not always a very nice person but I guess you can’t have everything. Believe it or not, she’s not completely stupid. Don’t be fooled by the fact that she’s run away from home and gotten herself drunk and crawled into the wrong sister’s window. All of which are pretty dumb things to do.”

“Huh?” said Laura.

I guess I could have messed with Laura’s head for a while with her thinking I was Tara. But to be honest, it was too easy. There’s really no fun in taking pot shots when the target is so easy to hit.

I sighed and spoke more slowly. “Laura, I’m not Tara. I’m Bec. You came knocking on the wrong window.”

“Ah fuck!” said Laura.

She peered at me for a moment through the dim light.

“How was I supposed to know which window to knock on?”

“I don’t know. You’ve only been here about a dozen times.”

There goes that sarcasm again.

She looked me up and down – a process which seemed to take an age given her drunken state.

“You look like Tara.”

“Yeah!”

She tilted her head to one side as she stared at me in the dim light. Then she started to tip over. She had to use a hand on the floor to straighten herself up.

“She’s got bigger tits than you!”

“Gee! Really?”

I looked down at my chest, the loose pyjama top more or less hung straight down. Tara does have bigger boobs but Laura didn’t have to rub it in!

“You’re a lot weirder than Tara.”

I shrugged. “Yeah.”

It’s hard to disagree with that – unless you want to argue about the definition of weird.

She looked at me some more.

“I’m sorry about the whole closet thing. It was supposed to be a bit of fun. I didn’t mean for it to get out of control like that.”

“Really? It sure seemed to me like you meant it.” I stopped myself and sighed. “But I’m over that. It’s forgotten.”

She thrust the plastic bottle at me. “Have a drink!”

“No thanks.”

“What about you, Sammie?” asked Laura. She waved the bottle in the direction of the bed but Sam shook his head.

“She’s a bit quiet, this cousin of yours,” said Laura.

“Yes, he is!” I said and tried to hide my smile. “Sam is a boy, Laura.”

Another opportunity to mess with Laura’s head thrown away. Sometimes I’m too nice for my own good.

“Huh?” said Laura. “Oh!” She peered drunkenly over at Sam. “Sorry!”

“It’s okay,” said Sam. “It is kind of dark.”

She peered at Sam and then back at me. “Were you two fucking? Did I interrupt something? How come you were both in bed together?”

Apparently in Laura’s world, two girl cousins can share a bed without a problem but girl and boy cousins sharing a bed is immediately suspect.

“No, Laura,” I said, keeping my voice patient. “We’re both too young for that. All you interrupted was us sleeping. He was in my bed because it’s more comfortable than the floor.”

“Oh!” she said.

Laura took another swig from the bottle.

“Sorry – again,” she said.

She again held the bottle out to Sam. “Seriously, you should try some of this.”

“No thanks,” said Sam.

“Hey, Laura!” I spoke up. “Pass me the bottle!”

I held out my hand for the bottle and she handed it over. The smell coming out of the bottle was quite strong. I stood up.

“What are you doing?” asked Laura.

“I’m going to pour this down the sink,” I said. “Then I’ll come back and we can decide what’s going to happen about you.”

“What the fuck?” asked Laura. “Give it back!”

“I was thinking that you’ve probably had enough. Then you kept offering alcohol to my nine year old cousin. That’s when I decided to draw the line.”

“I haven’t had enough,” she was slurring her words. “You can tell `cause I’m still conscious. Enough is when I’m passed out.”

“Yeah? Well, give it a few minutes. You’ll get there.”

I looked down at Laura as she sat slumped against my wall and shook my head. Then I went out of my room and through to the kitchen where I poured the foul smelling mixture of cola and alcohol down the sink. I could hear Laura whispering loudly for me to come back and give the drink back to her but I ignored her. I tossed the plastic bottle into the recycling and went back to my bedroom.

Laura was still where I’d left her. She ignored me and started hunting through her bag and muttering to herself. I sat on the edge of my bed and looked down at her. Then I looked at Sam.

Sam had been lying there and watching Laura.

“She’s really drunk, isn’t she?” I said to Sam. “What should we do about her?”

I spoke to Sam because I didn’t think I’d get any sort of sensible conversation out of Laura.

Sam shrugged. I guess it was a sensible shrug but it wasn’t as useful as I was hoping for.

Evil Bec wanted to lock her in the closet and see how she liked it but, fortunately, Evil Bec wasn’t in control. Or maybe that should be – unfortunately. B really wanted to punch Laura in the face but I had B cornered and wasn’t letting her out.

“I guess I should phone her father and ask him to come and get her,” I said to Sam. “Or, maybe I could tell him that she’s here and he can come get her in the morning. Something tells me she won’t be doing much else but sleeping for quite a while.”

Sam looked at Laura and then back at me. “Won’t she be mad at you if you tell her father?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know how much of tonight she’ll remember. Besides, she’s always mad at me. This wouldn’t change anything.”

Then I saw Sam’s eyes widen as he watched Laura.

I turned just in time to see Laura had upended a pill bottle over her mouth and was rapidly swallowing its contents.

I cursed and went over to her. I knelt and pulled the pill bottle away from her mouth but it was already empty.

“Laura! What have you done?”

She peered at me through half-closed eyes.

“Sleep!” she muttered. “Want to sleep!”

I peered at the bottle but couldn’t read the label in the dim light.

“How many did you take?” I asked but Laura didn’t answer.

“Sam, I need you! We have to get her to the bathroom.”

Sam bounded out of bed and between us we stood Laura up and draped her arms over our shoulders. Then we half-carried, half-dragged her out of my room and through to the bathroom. Laura was moaning and complaining but we ignored all of that.

I switched the bathroom light on and we all blinked our eyes against the glare. Then I steered Laura over and knelt her down in front of the toilet.

I looked at Sam who was kneeling on the other side of Laura and helping to support her.

“I’ve heard about people doing this, but I’ve never done it. Could you hold her hair out of the way?”

I waited until Sam had gathered her hair into a handful at the back of her head.

“Here goes!” I said.

Then I bent Laura forward over the toilet and stuck my fingers as far into the back of her mouth as I could reach. She gagged and I pulled my hand out of her mouth. Apparently I pulled out too soon or something because nothing happened. I tried again, and this time it worked. She gagged and convulsed and then started vomiting into the toilet.

I screwed up my nose at the smell and the sounds and saw that Sam was doing the same.

“Sam, can you keep holding her? I have to make a phone call.”

I left Sam with Laura in the bathroom and I raced back to the kitchen. I picked up the phone and dialled 911. A man answered almost immediately and I started answering his questions.

By the time I got back to the bathroom, Laura was curled up on the floor with her face on a towel. She was lying on her side and seemed to be breathing okay, so I left her there.

I told Sam to pull a robe on and then go and turn the outside light on and open the door ready for the ambulance.

Then I went charging down the hallway and into Dan’s room.

I didn’t stop to knock on the door or anything, I just barged on in. The light was on and the first thing I saw was Pearl’s naked back. She was sitting upright in the bed and kind of swaying gently. Then I realized that she was totally naked and sitting astride the hips of an equally naked Dan.

Yup! They were doing sex and I’d barged in on them.

They weren’t being very energetic or anything but it was pretty obvious what was going on.

“Dan!” I called.

Pearl squealed and dived off Dan and onto the floor so that she could hide on the other side of the bed. That left Dan fully exposed and looking very surprised. I kind of stared at his middle for maybe half a second and then forced myself to look at his face.

“What?” he said.

“Sorry, Dan, but I need you to get dressed.”

“Huh?” said Dan.

“Sorry, Pearl,” I said in the direction where Pearl was hiding.

I walked over and picked up a sheet off the floor. I threw it over the other side of the bed to Pearl.

“What’s going on?” asked Dan.

Pearl poked her head up and started wrapping herself in the sheet. She was looking extremely embarrassed. I shrugged an apology to her and turned to Dan.

I quickly explained about how Laura had crawled through my window and how she was drunk and how she’d swallowed some pills and how I’d made her vomit and then called for an ambulance. I told him I was going to go with Laura to the hospital and stay with her until her father could get there and I would need Dan to drive to the hospital and bring me home.

Then I turned and walked out while Dan scurried around and pulled some clothes on. I went back to my room and pulled some sweatpants and a hoodie over my pyjamas and slipped a pair of sneakers onto my feet. I picked up my cell phone and slid it into my pocket. Then I grabbed Laura’s bag and went back to the bathroom.

Dan arrived in the bathroom a bit before I did. When I came in, he was kneeling next to Laura and checking her breathing. He pulled her eyelids back and looked at her eyes. Then he looked at me and shrugged.

“I think you did the right thing,” said Dan. “I’ll go finish getting ready.”

I pulled out my phone, took a deep breath and dialed the number of the DiMartino house.

I listened as it rang and rang. I muttered to myself while I waited for somebody to answer but nobody did. It cut through to the answering machine so I left my number and a quick message for somebody to call me.

Sam came in with a blanket while that was happening and I jammed the phone between my shoulder and my ear so I could talk while I helped him spread the blanket over Laura.

I guess I’m making it sound like I was totally calm and in control. I really wasn’t but I guess I was pretending to be calm so that Sam didn’t panic. Also, I kept thinking of stuff to do and keeping busy seemed to stop me from going hysterical so that was good.

I hung up and hit Melissa’s number from speed dial.

After a few rings, Melissa answered with a very sleepy sounding, “Hello?”

“Melissa, this is Bec. Wake up! I need you to do something.”

“What?”

“I need you to go and wake your father and hand him the phone. I really have to talk to him, right now. It’s kind of important.”

“Okay, I’m out of bed, I’m walking! What’s going on?”

“It’s Laura, she’s gotten herself messed up again. She’s going to be okay, but I have to get her to the hospital.”

I sat down on the bathroom chair and listened while Melissa muttered about worthless sisters. I took the opportunity to lean forward and push Laura’s hair back off her face. Laura groaned and muttered and pulled faces about the taste in her mouth and then went back to sleep.

“Is she really going to be okay?” asked Melissa.

“Yes,” I reassured her. “She’s going to be fine.”

Then I listened as Melissa went through the process of going in to her parents’ room and waking up her father. There was a very brief exchange between the two of them and then her father came on the phone.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mr DiMartino. This is Bec Freeman.”

“So Melissa told me. What’s this about Laura?”

“She turned up at our place. She’s been drinking. Then she swallowed some pills. I made her vomit and then I called the ambulance.”

I heard him grunt something.

“I thought you should know, so I called as soon as I could.”

“Is she conscious? Can I talk to her?”

I looked down at Laura.

“No, she’s out of it. She’s still breathing though. The 911 man said I had to keep watching her and make sure she was breathing. He wanted me to stay on the line but I had to call you so I hung up. The ambulance should be here any minute.”

He grunted again.

“Tell the EMTs to take her to the hospital at Memorial Park. Do you understand?”

“Yes sir. I understand. The Memorial Park Hospital. I’ll tell them.”

“Why is it you doing all of this? Where are your parents?”

“Neither of my parents are around at the moment. Dan, my brother, is kind of in charge if that’s what you’re asking.”

“And he was letting you drink?”

I sighed.

“Mr DiMartino, Laura’s the only one who’s been drinking. And she was doing that before she got here. She was already drunk when she turned up. Everybody was in bed. It’s not like we were having a party or anything.”

“Then why did she go there? It’s the middle of the night. She had to have some reason for going all the way over to your house.”

At that moment, Dan appeared in the doorway with two EMTs beside him.

“Sir, the ambulance is here. I think we should talk about this later. I’ll see you at the hospital.”

“Memorial Park!”

“Memorial Park Hospital! I got that. I’ll see you there.”

I spent the next few minutes answering as many of the EMT’s questions as I could. I gave them the empty pill bottle so they would know what pills she had taken. I got asked how many pills she’d swallowed and I had no clue so I told them that. One of them talked to me while the other one did all the usual things that you see EMTs do on TV shows – including putting a little plastic mask on her face for oxygen. During the process Laura kind of half woke up and she grabbed a hold of my hand and wouldn’t let go. I was a bit nervous answering the questions in case I’d done something wrong but the EMT said I’d done the right thing. Then the other one said that Laura would probably be okay because of what I’d done but they still needed to get her to the hospital to have her checked over properly and maybe get her stomach pumped out.

I explained about Memorial Park Hospital and then I explained how I was going to sit with Laura in the ambulance and her father was going to meet us at the hospital. The EMT objected to that since I’m not Laura’s family but I kind of put my foot down and insisted. It was helped by the fact that Laura was gripping my hand as tight as she could the entire time.

Dan and Sam stood back and watched me argue with little smiles on their faces. I don’t know what they were thinking. I offered to get Mr DiMartino back on the phone so that he could explain to them that I was going with Laura but they gave in before I actually had to do that. I climbed into the back of the ambulance and sat beside Laura with her still holding my hand. Then I reminded the EMTs again about Memorial Park Hospital in case they’d forgotten while I was explaining those other things to them.

A little while later I was sitting on a bench opposite the bed in the back of the ambulance and holding Laura’s hand while we drove to the hospital. She had the plastic breathing mask over her mouth and they had her connected to a machine which was beeping away quite regularly. The EMTs didn’t seemed too worried about her so that helped me relax quite a bit. The regular beeping helped me relax, too.

About half way to the hospital I realized that Laura’s eyes were open and she was staring up at me.

“You’re going to be okay,” I said. “Just relax. You’re going to be okay.”

I squeezed her hand and smiled down at her.

She was looking up at me from over the top of the breathing mask. She didn’t say anything but her eyes had this really big question in them. It was like she was asking me, “Why are you helping me? Why are you being so nice to me?”

She looked so confused.

Honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure. I mean, obviously, she needed help so I was helping her. But she’s one of my worst enemies and suddenly all of this happens and I’m looking after her as well as I’d look after one of my best friends.

Sometimes, I confuse myself.

Mr and Mrs DiMartino were arriving at the entrance to the hospital as they wheeled Laura in on the stretcher. Laura had gone back to sleep so I’d let go of her hand by that stage and I was walking along behind the stretcher. Mr DiMartino nodded at me and then they both looked down at Laura as she was wheeled past them.

Mrs DiMartino started trotting along beside the stretcher and trying to talk to Laura but she got no response. Mr DiMartino waited and then walked along beside me. We didn’t say anything to each other as we followed the stretcher.

They pushed Laura through a set of swinging doors and told us we couldn’t go any further. Mrs DiMartino burst into tears and went to Mr DiMartino, who put his arm around her.

A nurse called us over to a cubicle where she asked a lot of questions and entered the answers onto the computer. Mr DiMartino answered most of the questions about Laura’s details but he looked at me when she started asking about what had happened. I gave exactly the same answers as I’d given to the EMT but this time I was a bit more confident because the EMTs had said I’d done the right thing. All the time, Mrs DiMartino was kind of hugging herself into Mr DiMartino’s side and I saw a few more tears drizzle down her cheeks as she listened to what I was saying.

Once I was finished, Mr DiMartino reached out and patted me on the shoulder. He was kind of awkward about it but I understood what he was trying to say. I looked around but Dan hadn’t shown up so I went and sat in the little waiting room. It was a little more posh than the hospital where you work and the chairs were a bit more comfortable but it was still a hospital waiting room. Did I mention how much I don’t like hospitals?

From where I was sitting, I could see Mr and Mrs DiMartino through the glass wall. They were still talking to the nurse but then a doctor came out and talked to them. After a bit, the doctor led Mrs DiMartino in through a different door in the same wall they’d taken Laura so I figured he was taking her in to see Laura.

Mr DiMartino came into the waiting room and walked over to me.

I scrambled to my feet and then waited for him to come to me.

“Rebecca Freeman,” he said with a kind of a sigh.

I struggled for a moment for the most appropriate response and eventually settled for a simple, “Sir!”

“They say Laura is going to be fine,” he said. “They want to keep her here for observation but they expect she’ll be able to go home – probably some time tomorrow.”

I nodded. “That’s good news.”

“The doctor said that it was all thanks to the person who gave her first aid and called 911. Responding so quickly prevented any serious problems. That would be you.”

I gave a little shrug.

“Thank you,” he said. “Thank you for looking after my daughter.”

“I only did what any person in the same position would do,” I said.

“Nevertheless, it was you who did it.”

He held out his hand. I reached out my own and we shook hands.

“Oh!” I said. “This is Laura’s bag.” I’d slung it over one shoulder so now I took the bag and handed it to him. He let it dangle from one hand and looked around. Then he gestured at the seat next to where I’d been sitting.

“May I sit?”

I shrugged and waved. We both sat down.

We were silent for a moment. I could see he was wanting to say something so I waited. Eventually he sighed and shifted in his seat.

“The doctor asked us a question I couldn’t answer. He wanted to know if we thought this was a genuine suicide attempt. I wondered why he was asking us. We weren’t there. Then I realized he was asking the question based on the wider context and I was troubled.”

I nodded for him to continue, but he wasn’t looking at me. He was staring forwards and down at the floor.

“You warned me that she was at risk of attempting suicide the other week. You’re just a child but the way you talk is so...”

He stopped and shook his head. Then he started again.

“Then this happens and you were there. So I’m going to ask you. Do you think this was a genuine attempt? Was Laura actually trying to end her life?”

I took a moment to think about the question. I looked at Mr DiMartino but he was still staring at the floor. I ran the question around the corners of my brain and watched to see what jumped out at it. Then I thought about it some more.

This was important. It wasn’t making conversation about a football game or getting someone to stop being mean. It was serious and vital and scary.

“You told Laura she was being sent to Military School. She was upset and angry and confused and scared and feeling betrayed and feeling abandoned. And maybe she kind of knew that she’d done the wrong thing and wasn’t ready to accept responsibility for that.”

I stopped and took a breath and tried again.

“I don’t know, for sure. I think it all got too much for her so she ran away. She told me that she’d slipped a couple of sleeping pills into that nanny’s coffee or whatever so she wouldn’t get caught. I guess that’s why they were in her bag.”

I glanced sideways at Mr DiMartino but he wasn’t reacting so I shrugged and continued my story.

“She mixed some of your scotch into her bottle of cola, packed some stuff into her bag and left. I imagine she found some corner or other and started drinking. She wanted to get so drunk that she wouldn’t have to deal with everything. Then she must have noticed how cold it was and decided to come to our house. She figured my sister would let her sleep on the bedroom floor. But she got me instead of my sister.

“I took the alcohol away from her. Without it, she couldn’t drink herself unconscious. I guess that makes it my fault that she swallowed those sleeping pills. She wanted to make the pain go away and that was all she had left. I’m not an expert about alcohol but my parents have told me that if you have too much then it dulls the senses and takes away the ability to make sensible choices.”

I stopped and thought about what I’d said.

“Actually, I guess I’m starting to be – maybe not an expert – but I’ve seen it happen a few times now. People making dumb decisions when they’re drunk, I mean.”

I sighed.

“So, to answer your question, no, I don’t think Laura was trying to kill herself. I think she just wanted it all to stop. She wanted a way out and couldn’t see any. So the only escape was to be unconscious. She took those pills right in front of me and my cousin. She must have known we wouldn’t let her die – if she even thought about that. The book I read said that a lot of suicide attempts were really cries for help. I don’t even think it was that. I think she did something dumb – because she was drunk.”

I stopped talking and we both sat there for a while in silence. Then Mr DiMartino shook his head.

“We never actually told her we were sending her to Military School,” he said, in a soft voice. “She must have overheard us talking. It’s one of the options we’re discussing.”

I blinked a couple of times. “Oh!”

He snorted. “I gather you don’t approve. You don’t think we should send her away?”

“Oh! I think you should totally send her away. I think she needs some sort of drastic and dramatic change to jolt her out of her current mindframe and keeping her here isn’t going to do that. But Military School? I don’t see that working for Laura. I doubt if marching up and down and having orders barked at her is going to solve her problems.”

I tilted my head and looked sideways at him.

“Do you have any relatives that she could go and stay with? Somebody who she already has a connection with. That’s what I think she needs. A change but still connected to her family. Maybe somewhere where she has to work a bit for her supper. That wouldn’t hurt. Not for ever but maybe for a month or two.”

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 24 Later Sunday Morning

Mum appeared in my open bedroom door. She was still wearing the caftan and the outrageous hat. “Hello, honey,” she said, hesitantly. “Hi Mum!” Mum came in and sat herself on the bed next to Sam. Sam was propped up against a pillow, engrossed in one of my Harry Potter books. Mum put her hand on Sam’s knee and rubbed it gently. Sam looked up and smiled and then went back to the book. “What are you up to?” Mum asked me. “I’m finishing an English essay about War of the Worlds.” “Oh!” said...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 11 Later Friday Evening

One time I was talking to Dan about sex stuff and he made some comment about bondage. He had to explain that it meant tying people up during sex. I remember thinking about how Tara and I have occasionally played games where as part of the game one of us has spent some time tied up and I couldn’t understand how that had anything to do with sex. When I asked Dan about this, he said he didn’t think he could explain it properly. I asked him to try. He thought about it for a moment and then this...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 5 Later Friday Morning

On places like the Nature Channel, you sometimes see whole families of monkeys all sitting around grooming each other. They eat any nits they find which is a bit gross but they also clean each other’s hair and untangle any knots and stuff like that. The narrators always make comments about how this is an important social activity and how it helps bond the tribal group together and so on. I guess putting braids in someone’s hair is a human equivalent of that. I was sitting quietly on the...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 14 Saturday Morning Bath

I was feeling strange. I was hiding in the bathroom with my back against the door. My knees were trembling and my throat was dry and my insides were all tied up in knots. All these weird emotions were running around inside of me – all mixed up and confused. I wanted to be with people but I wanted to hide away from everybody. I wanted to have a bath and get clean but I didn’t want to take my clothes off. I wanted to ask Mum why she had gotten upset about me doing a drawing in her style but I...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 21 Just You Wait Lance Jenkins

I crash into a gate. It bangs open. I glance over my shoulder – nothing! Frantic! I run through the night. Branches slap at my face – grasp at my ankles. The same gate rattles. Footsteps thud behind me. I gasp for air – run harder. Blocked! A fence – six feet high – more. Trapped! I look around – desperate. Footsteps approach behind me – they stop. Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 3 Thanksgiving Night

“NOOOOO!” It was more of a muffled bellow than a scream. Dad’s deep voice split through the warm soft blackness of sleep and dragged me back to the cold hard darkness of my room. I found myself sitting upright in bed, panting in shock. My heart was thumping so hard and so fast that it made my teeth rattle. I was surprised the vibrations from my thumping heart didn’t shake all my bones loose and send them clattering to the ground. Dad’s voice kept straining through the walls, his words...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 4 Friday Morning November 26th

I woke up suddenly – I don’t remember why. I think I might have been dreaming but I don’t remember the dream. I lay there and looked up at the ceiling. Suddenly, I was filled with panic. It was the wrong ceiling. I’d never seen it before in my life. I had no idea where I was. I’d gone to sleep in my bedroom and woken up somewhere else? What happened? Where was I? It’s always been something that scares me – going to sleep in one place and waking up in another with no explanation as to how I...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 15 Later Saturday Morning

The laughter stopped as we walked out of the house. Dad had put a hand on my shoulder and steered me through the house with both of us chuckling away. But then Dad needed to use that hand to open and close the front door. We both more or less stopped laughing at the same time. Maybe it was the loss of contact. Maybe it was the chilly outside air. Whatever the reason, the laughter fell away from me and left me feeling empty again. Is this what they mean when they talk about teenagers having...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 9 Later Friday Afternoon

By the time we turned into the street where we live I’d run out of ideas to use in answering Dad’s question. He had asked me to list as much Christian symbolism as I could that appeared in the original Star Wars movie. I think I did pretty well because I’d been talking almost continuously all the way home. I figure I was working at a disadvantage because I haven’t spent very much time studying the Bible like some people have. But I have looked at a lot of religious art so that helped. It...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 20 Dance Dance Wherever You May Be

I sat on my bed in the shortest pair of shorts I’ve ever worn and a cropped top that could have been a sock in its former life. It was not much more than a band around my chest with spaghetti straps to keep it up. Given that it was elasticized and fitted me pretty snugly, I wasn’t at all sure that the straps did anything. I guess if they weren’t there, the thing would probably crawl its way down my body until it was acting like a belt instead of a top. That would be embarrassing – even more...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 25 Sunday Afternoon

Lance Jenkins arrived at about twenty minutes after two. Tara opened the door and looked him up and down. He was dressed nicely in a good pair of jeans and a button up shirt. “You must be Lance,” said Tara. “Come in. Bec is expecting you.” Tara led him into the living room where I was sitting with Angie. I stood up and went to Lance. “Hi!” I said and went up on my toes so that I could kiss his cheek. “Come and sit down.” I gestured at the couch where I’d been sitting. While Lance was...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 7 Early Friday Afternoon

I sat neck deep in water with my knees hard up against my chest and my arms wrapped around my legs. The water boiled and frothed and surged against my skin. If I’d been more relaxed it would have been relaxing. Instead, I was all tense and the constant movement of the water was annoying. I was tense because I was nervous – and embarrassed – and angry. I was embarrassed because I was naked and there were four other people in the tub with me – who were also naked. Maybe I should say nekkid. I...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 18 Cotton Candy

Reality is like cotton candy. Cotton candy looks all solid and pretty but as soon as you actually try to eat it, it dissolves away into nothing. All you get left with is a sweet taste in your mouth and a kind of sticky sensation. So you take another bite and the same thing happens. You keep going like that until you have nothing left but the little cardboard stick. Now the stick is hard and solid and not nearly so pretty but at least it doesn’t melt away into nothing. On the other hand, you...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 13 Saturday Morning Breakfast

The first thing I knew, my clock was saying 6:41. I lay there and watched it tick over to 6:42, then to 6:43. I was wide awake and not going back to sleep anytime soon. According to my parenting book, teenagers aren’t supposed to wake up this early. They’re supposed to sleep in for hours and hours. I can’t wait for that to start happening. Waking up too early sucks. I got out of bed and stepped over Tara. I wrapped myself in my robe and sat at my dresser. I let out my hair and brushed it...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 2 Thanksgiving Evening

Sam let me hug him when we were saying goodbye. That was nice. I was in desperate need of hugs. I don’t know why. If everyone gets allocated a certain number of hugs each day then I’d probably gone way past that number today but I still wanted more. Okay, I really do know why. Aunty Penny’s story had disturbed me. And more than that, my reaction to Aunty Penny’s story had terrified me. I figure I know me pretty well. If you asked before today how I would react to Aunty Penny’s story I would...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 6 Friday Lunch

After the incident with Clayton, Faith announced that she wasn’t in the mood to hang around with the whole crowd so she invited the four of us back to her family’s place for lunch. Her family was out for the day so we would have the house to ourselves and they had plenty of leftovers from yesterday so there was no shortage of food. Dan and Pearl and Danielle all seemed to agree with Faith about not wanting to stay with the rest. That was strange because I didn’t really care either way. I...

Mrs Flasche is a fairly attractive woman for someone her age. I don’t know what her age is but she’s pretty old. I would guess that she’s more than forty but less than sixty. Between those two numbers, I have no clue. Mrs Flasche lives next to Liz and she works as a hairdresser. Liz introduced me to Mrs Flasche and I managed a smile and a nod. I was embarrassed, humiliated, mortified, shamed, distraught. I was an idiot, a moron, a bonehead, a doofus, a git, a fool, a nitwit, a cretin. I wanted to die. I wanted to dig the deepest, darkest hole and curl up in a ball at the bottom. I wondered if perhaps I was already there. Reality had other ideas. It insisted on dragging me out of the darkness. My senses reconnected and I started feeling again. I was curled up in a ball, but I wasn’t at the bottom of a hole. I was curled up...

I woke suddenly – jerking upright in my bed. Something was wrong. I didn’t know what, but something was definitely wrong. I sat there with my heart pounding in my chest. Peering through the darkness of my room I saw no movement. Nothing! I listened intently – straining to hear the quietest sound. I could hear the soft whisper of Tara’s breathing from where she lay sleeping on my floor. I could hear the frantic thumping of my heart. Apart from that, nothing. I slipped out of bed and crept...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 8 Friday Afternoon

Hey, Doctor K. You know how I’ve told you I’m learning high school math out of a book? Well, I’m learning how to solve all sorts of weird problems with algebra. It’s really exciting. A typical problem goes something like this: A girl starts running at a speed of 21 feet per second. Two seconds later her older brother who is twice her size and about one and a half times her age starts chasing her at a speed of 27 feet per second. How long does the girl run before she gets caught? The way you...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 10 Friday Evening

Lightning crashes overhead and thunder roars. A single high soprano voice soars in wordless homage to the storm. The naked woman dances and spins. Her long hair blows wild and free in the blustering wind. The goblet and knife in her hands speak of some nameless ritual. Her naked dance is sexy, brazen, promiscuous, earthy, vulgar. She flings her arms wide and opens herself to the storm. A single bolt of lightning spears down and slams into the earth in front of her. Heat and light sear the...

Bec3 It Aint Over Til Its OverChapter 17 I Could Have Danced All Night

I turned the page and pushed a wisp of hair back behind my ear. A light breeze rippled across the bare skin of my back and I wriggled in delight on my blanket. Then I focused back on my book. It was a romance novel, a real page-turner. It was all about a girl living in suburban America – a life so very different from living on a farm. In this current chapter she was at a wedding reception and she’d had her very first kiss with a handsome young guy. It was all very romantic. I dived back into...

SYNOPSIS: Like so many times before, it was just a little favor. Just another itsy-bitsy favor his mother had conned him into. Trouble is, any time she managed to manipulate him into doing one of her itsy-bitsy favors ... well, things just never seemed to end well. Would he ever learn? And, if he did learn, what exactly would he learn? He literally shook with fear as, once again, he heard the words he dreaded most ... "Honey, please, it won't take you that much time. ...

An Itsy Bitsy Vacation

An Itsy Bitsy Vacation By Anon Allsop My stomach was in my throat, I had been building to this very moment for nearly three years. Standing before the mirror in the women's locker room, I trembled like a leaf. Draping a huge beach blanket over my shoulders, it surrounded me like a shroud. I hesitatingly looked toward the door, "It's now or never, Kris." I whispered to myself, regretting the bet I had made with myself so long ago - to lose the weight and complete the transition....

Judy and Her Itsy Bitsy Bikini Episode 1Forward The Beginning

I'm not sure when I first joined SOL but it has been a long time. For many years I just read the tales of others, enjoying their efforts. It was nearly five years ago when I decided to try my hand at it, you know, posting stories. Never having done that before, the process seemed a little daunting. Over the years I've written a few stories solely for my own enjoyment but not published them anywhere. My favorites were fairly long and I'd guess they'd match up with ones which were way over...

Hostile Takeover: Locked up, Knocked up.I sat at my office desk, half-focussed on the figures on the screen as I wondered what was taking place in the conference room nearby. The office grapevine had been talking of mergers or takeovers for weeks now, and the team of expensively-dressed Chinese men who had arrived early that Friday morning certainly did nothing to quash that talk. Some of my co-workers had good reason to worry about the outcome of any talks: in this economy, it was virtually...

Steve was sitting at his small desk in the corner near the double sliding door that led out onto the small balcony. The door was partially open and he delighted at the squeals and yells from the children playing in the pool. "Yes," he thought to himself, "I've chosen the right place to live." The kids antics sifting in from below confirmed it. Dragging his mind back to the job at hand, he typed on his laptop. After entering a few more lines looked back, made a few corrections and saved...

Love Me til Dawn Chapter 1

Love Me ‘til DawnForewordThis story is a true representation of the evolution of love between three women. It was originally conceived by Sienna as an imaginative fiction to express her feelings towards Gaia. Gaia responded with her own. Suddenly there was a story to be followed and neither knew the ending. Alternating our chapters we wrote how we felt as our relationship developed. Yet there was another woman involved… Gaia at the beginning of the story was in love with someone else and we...

Knockin em up

That changed my life. See, I was a little runt. That guy who was never good at any of the ball-games, smart, but a bit of a smart-ass, who usually didn’t have a lot of friends. I was the kind of kid who didn’t get much respect from my peers, and considering we moved around a lot (dad had a hard time keeping a job) it was that much harder to make friends. So when the older boy gave me a pat on the back, I really felt good about myself. I didn’t care that he was congratulating me for doing...

Knockin Boots With Morgan Bryant

The band's encore faded out and the final set for the night came to an end. Pumped-up festival-goers began to pour out of the arena looking to take the party elsewhere – probably to a field somewhere, in true country style. I took one look at the human traffic jam at the arena gates and decided to stay put and wait out the crowd. As the crowd thinned, I noticed the blanket of red plastic cups and other rubbish that had been discarded all over the grassy arena. Still buzzed with energy from the...

A Twilight KnockoffChapter 7

I got my break after all. At about 8:30 pm Friday night, all hell broke loose in the form of snow, ice and wind. I got calls from the Five, all disappointed except me. I passed the hours away curled around my stories and relaxing away my troubles, trying to forget about the storm and its consequences come Monday. I dreamed about Connor. The settings would change, but he was always moving away from me and I couldn't catch him. I would wake from these dreams breathing hard, my pulse pounding...

A Twilight KnockoffChapter 8

Monday morning was the worst, weather wise, that I'd ever experienced, even though the storm had ended Sunday. Everything was coated in ice, even the snow and it was almost single digit temperatures. I spent an hour trying to clear my poor car of the ice that had imprisoned it, going back inside every few minutes to warm up. I wore my ski-bib over my clothes, which I wore over my thermals and was still freezing. At least I didn't have Weights today; those locker rooms were cold! I inched...

Claire gave me a ride to school since my jeep was still in the parking lot. Everyone at school, even the teachers, proceeded to help me relive the previous day. We met up in the empty school parking lot around noon Saturday, ten people total, packing ourselves into a borrowed van for the ride. It was an awkward experience. I sat between Aaron and Allison with Cody on the other side of her, both boys making passes at me when they thought the other wasn't looking. Poor Allison; I knew she liked Cody a little and I wanted to smack him. An hour or so later, although it felt like forever, we arrived. Everyone piled out gratefully, stretching away kinks...

A Twilight KnockoffChapter 11

My head hurt when I woke up; I knew I'd dreamed of voices but I couldn't remember what was said. That's the last time I take those to go to sleep, I thought to myself and rolled out of bed, the bright sunlight shining through my windows stabbing my eyes. Aunt Claire had left a note on the fridge saying she'd gone out with some friends and she'd be back later tonight, a hastily written cell phone number below her writing if I needed to reach her; she hated cell phones. I had the house...

I didn't sleep well that night, tossing and turning, constantly waking, thinking someone was watching me. It was just my imagination though; I could hear Claire snoring softly across the hall and, while my room did face the street, there were no trees to climb and I had my blinds and curtains closed. I felt like I was being paranoid, thinking people were spying on me, but that's what my instincts were telling me. I woke up cranky, setting the mood for the day. It was raining, I couldn't...

I woke up extra early Saturday, showered and de-frizzed my hair and tried not to fidget as I waited for Connor to show up. Excitement held as the week progressed. I was eager to see his family again, eager to see them all behave naturally. It was eerie to see them so muted at school after witnessing their natural behavior and it made me sad to think that nobody else could appreciate it. They came into the clearing one by one, spread far apart, two males and a female. One male stepped forward and the rest fell in behind him, clearly marking who the leader was. I didn't trust it, remembering Morgan's words. Their approach was cautious, which I deemed suitably appropriate when entering another predator's territory. They walked only a little faster than human speed, though, unlike the Hawkins, their gliding stride could never be mistaken for human. As they got closer, I...
