"How the fuck did I get into this situation?" Alex thought to himself.
He was standing in front of the Delta Sigma Kappa (???) sorority house,
wearing a black pencil skirt and a tube top. The clothes clung awkwardly
to his 6'1" figure. The California breeze felt strange on his freshly
shaved legs. He knew it was a bad idea from the moment he heard it, but
he needed the money.
Alex had never had many friends, nor spent much time with other people.
He was kind of a loner since he could remember. Now over five years out
of college, it was only growing harder to find human interaction. He
lived out in the suburbs, where there weren't many other young people,
because the city was too expensive. Feeling frustrated with his boring
routine, he had searched for flights online and snagged the cheapest last
minute tickets he could find, from Philly airport to LAX.
He rented a car and spent the first day seeing the Hollywood sign, Santa
Monica boardwalk, and the like. It was kind of freeing to be on his own,
far from the constraints of his job, and not having to reply to texts or
emails. The trip quickly spiraled downwards, however, as less than 24
hours into it he wound up getting lost trying to find his rental car in
the dark, forgetting the license plate, and getting mugged. He hadn't
kept anything in the hotel for emergencies. Every last penny was gone.
He makes bad decisions because of the trauma of being mugged and doesn't
think straight. Include scene.
The whole experience put him in a state of shock. Alex hadn't expected to
have this severe of a reaction, but there was also nothing quite like
seeing a gun pointed at your own head. Even though the mugger said he'd
only shoot him if he didn't give up his wallet, there was no way to trust
somebody like that. He had broken down immediately after the encounter
was over. The mild respite was short lived, as Alex quickly realized that
he had no way to purchase meals, let alone get back home. He had the
rental car for a few more days, but without buying more gas he wouldn't
get far. At least the car would be a place to sleep.
Later that day Alex ended up at the local library, searching the internet
for hours, trying to find a way out of his situation. He wasn't on very
good terms with his parents, and without any bank cards, there wouldn't
have been a place for them to transfer money to, even if they agreed. He
went on craigslist, looking for a one-time job for a few hundred bucks.
Still experiencing the aftershocks of the mugging, thinking straight was
not in his repertoire. In a desperate attempt to salvage his dignity, he
messaged a college kid who was offering $500 to steal a pair of panties
from a specific sorority, and bring them back to him. His remaining
snacks wouldn't last long, and there didn't seem to be any other option.
It was the only way out.
According to his brief chat with "Doug", whoever successfully pulled it
off first became the new leader of the fraternity when the current one
graduated. The deadline was the next day, so this guy was clearly getting
desperate. When Alex learned that each new girl was given a pair of
panties with her name on it, which had to be worn at special occasions,
he realized why the price was so high. No girl would sell her unique pair
for any price. In addition, Doug mentioned that the sorority was extra
vigilant this time of year, and had a modern security system. There was
only one way to get into the house unnoticed.
He would have to fly under the radar by pretending to be a new pledge. In
other words, he would have to dress up like a girl. Alex sat on it for a
good hour, but the clock was ticking and Doug was getting impatient.
Finally he agreed to do it. He would have less than 24 hours.
Alex found an ad online from a woman who was giving away most of her
clothes, to go live a "minimalist" lifestyle with her boyfriend in
Belgium. Most of them didn't come close to fitting, but amongst the pile
there were a few things that were close enough. He looked at guides aimed
at trans women, and learned how to stuff a bra and shave his legs; he
could just wear long pants for a week or two once he got home. The final
step was "borrowing" makeup from Doug's girlfriend, who he assured him
wouldn't be able to tell he had used it. After a few YouTube videos and a
humiliating tutorial from the woman at the makeup counter at a nearby
mall, he was just about ready. He figured the humiliation was
meaningless, since he'd be 3000 miles away soon, and nobody would
remember him.
"Wow, that's really me," Alex remarked when looking in the mirror. He
found it sort of thrilling, like wearing a Halloween costume. It was very
strange to see a "woman" copying his movements, albeit an ugly one.
With less than a half an hour left there was no time to think it over.
His stomach grumbled. He hadn't eaten since the morning. He had to do
this.
"Hi my name is Alexa." Too deep. "Hi my name is Alexa." Alex practiced
talking in a higher voice during the ride over. He sounded more like the
stereotype of gay men, than an actual woman. He hoped his appearance
would compensate for that. Just to make sure his identity couldn't be
traced, he parked a few blocks away and walked.
The Delta Sigma Kappa house was a two-story Spanish-style McMansion just
off campus. It was a lot bigger than he expected from a sorority house.
Freshly cut hedges lined the cobblestone pathway leading up the hill to
the door.
"This is it, don't get scared now," said Alex, quoting the movie 'Home
Alone.' He often quoted movies when he couldn't think of anything to say.
He rang the doorbell, the sound echoing across the estate.
Suddenly the door opened, and a gorgeous Latina with jet black hair
smiled at him. "Welcome to Delta Sigma Kappa! I love your outfit, if you
make it, the boys will just eat you up."
Alex blushed. "T-thank you, yours is great too." His voice cracked. Fuck,
this wasn't going well. To his shock, instead of freaking out the woman
smiled warmly at him, leading the way into the living room.
"I'm Laura, the head of our sorority. There will be 40 of us total, after
the newbies, 20 bedrooms so everyone has a roommate." She gestured for
him to sit down. The living room was furnished with a massive black
leather couch and a 90-inch TV. It was hard to feel like royalty sitting
here under the silver chandelier.
"Do you want anything to drink?" asked Laura. "We have plenty of soda,
iced tea, lemonade... nothing crazy just yet, but there won't be a
shortage if you make it in." She winked at him. Alex tried to keep his
composure. One of the sexiest women he had ever seen was smiling at him,
offering him drinks, and acting like they had been friends for years.
"Sure I'll have a coke, thanks," said Alex. Then he realized a woman
would be more polite. "I appreciate it."
"What's your name girl?"
"Alexa." It was the first name that popped into his head, being the
feminine form of his own. A different girl came through giving out
sandwiches, which Alex did his best not to eat in one bite. Hunger at
bay, his confidence began to rise. Laura returned shortly after with a
mini can of cherry coke. "So tell me about yourself, are you a freshman?
What's your major?"
Alex cringed at his idiocy. He hadn't spent any time developing a
backstory, and he was about to pay the price.
"Oh yeah I just started, I'm still undecided."
"What clubs are you thinking of joining? Did you go to the activities
fair on Sunday? I'm on the SGA myself."
"I'm still not really sure, I've been thinking about the computer science
club though," he said, quickly adding a piece from his actual college
experience.
"Don't worry! You'll have plenty of time to figure it out. Do you think
you might want to go into computer science? Don't let men intimidate you,
girls can be into tech."
"Oh I'm really not sure yet, I'm still just figuring things out, but
thank you for the advice."
"Of course. Just so you know, we are a social sorority, not service or
academic, meaning we're not founded on any specific major or identity.
Our main goal is to develop lifelong friendships."
"This place is so huge," said Alex, remembering why he was here. "I'd
love to get a tour."
"Maybe later, I want you to meet your sisters first," said Laura, raising
her eyebrows. "Did you not come to the tour during the open house?"
"I must've missed it," said Alex, forcing a feminine laugh. "Like I said,
I'm still getting the hang of things here."
"Okay, well you'll get to see the place soon enough. The house is
beautiful, but the best part is having unlimited support. When I was in
high school I was kind of shy, and it made such a huge difference being
in a sorority here. I made friends so fast, everyone here is really
friendly and it feels like you're in a family. You'll never have to deal
with anything alone."
Alex imagined what it would feel like to have that kind of friendship.
For a moment he wished he had joined a fraternity in college. He had
always imagined Greek life being lots of drunk people, hazing, and
constant noise.
"Girl, you okay?" Laura snapped him out of his thoughts. "You were sorta
out of it for a second."
"I'm fine, I was just thinking," said Alex.
"You're so lucky. I've never met a girl who could tune everything out
like that. Always thought it was a guy thing." Laura made an exaggerated
jealous face.
"Maybe it's genetic. My mom could do that too."
Other than an occasional slip up, Laura seemed to mostly buy his
disguise. She continued being ultra friendly to him, as more pledges
arrived and the couch soon filled up, forcing some people to sit at the
dining room table. Most of the girls were olive skinned Latinas. Alex
figured there was a reason L.A. was known for its Mexican food.
"What high school did you go to?" asked Laura.
"Haverford." Alex gave his real high school without thinking.
"I've never heard of that, are you from NorCal?"
"I'm from Philly," said Alex. He figured he might as well use his real
location, rather than risk lying about places he knew nothing about.
"Wow, that's so cool! I don't think I've met anyone from that far away,
out-of-state students are really rare hare," said Laura. "It must've been
hard to move across the country. You'll feel at home here pretty soon
though. What made you come here, by the way?"
Alex gave a shrug, "My dad's from Long Beach." He riddled off the first
local city name he could think of.
"OMG I'm from the eastside! Which school did your dad go to?"
"Long Beach High School," said Alex.
"Huh?" said Laura. She looked like she was about to say something, then
stopped. "So anyway, how about that tour?"
Alex breathed a sigh of relief. "It's almost over," he thought. Just a
few more minutes and nobody would ever know he dressed up like a girl.
"So I thought we could see the upstairs first, and make our way down from
there," said Laura, leading Alex up a winding staircase. "Sounds good,"
he replied. He wondered why she hadn't brought anyone else on the tour.
"This is the master bedroom, it's mine, but someday if you stick around
long enough, it could be yours," said Laura. Two magnificent four-poster
beds draped in purple curtains sat on either side of the room.
Alex looked around for a dresser but there were only two desks, as well
as a table with a mirror attached and a makeup kit sitting beneath it.
"How could they not have a dresser?" Alex wondered.
"Where do you guys store your clothes?" said Alex. "It's just weird,
there's no dresser or anything. The room feels empty."
"Oh we keep them all in the closet," said Laura.
"She must be an idiot," thought Alex. He made the most obvious slip up,
and she hadn't even reacted. He decided if she was that oblivious he
might as well go for it. "Could I see the closet?" he asked.
"Sure!" said Laura. "It's huge, so don't get lost in there." Laura pulled
open a door to reveal a room that looked more like a bedroom than a
closet. The walls were lined with folded tops and bottoms, purses, shoes,
and dresses on hangers. No panties in sight. Alex discreetly stuck his
hand into a few of the drawers until he found what he was looking for.
The panties were embroidered with Laura's name.
Laura spoke again, "Your closet won't be as big, but it's still super
nice."
Alex realized suddenly that he didn't have any pockets. He quickly
thought up a plan.
"If it's half as big as this, it'll still be the 2nd largest closet I've
ever se--" Alex fell onto the ground mid-conversation, slipping the
panties into the fold of his skirt on the way down. It all happened so
fast that there was no way she could've seen.
Laura shook her head and sighed. "I was really hoping you were just
trans."
Alex's throat ran dry. "What?" he asked.
"I saw you take those panties. I'm not dumb."
He felt his face starting to flare up.
"Your voice isn't even that convincing," Laura went on. "I thought maybe
you were just a trans girl trying to fit in, that you came across the
country to be accepted as a girl. Of course you had to be just another
misogynist prick!"
"Hey wait a minute, I'm not a misogynist."
"You think stealing a girl's panties like it's some trophy doesn't make
you an asshole? Fuck you. Men are always the same. Bet I'm just a piece
of meat to you, right?"
Alex tried to respond but he was at a loss for words. He had been so sure
she was convinced. What changed?
"I--I needed the money," Alex croaked out.
"What?"
He realized he was still frozen in place and stood back up.
"I got mugged here on vacation and I needed some money. Some guy from
your college offered me $500 to steal a pair of panties from your
sorority."
"Five hundred?" Laura said skeptically. "Sure buddy, totally legit
story."
"I'm telling the truth! I don't even go here, I'm twenty-seven. Do you
think I'd just show up 3000 miles away and do this for kicks?"
"I think you're still lying," said Laura. "This isn't okay. You need to
be taught a lesson."
"Please don't go to the police!" said Alex, beginning to panic. "I swear,
I wasn't trying to hurt anybody. I was desperate for some quick cash.
Isn't there something we can work out?"
Laura rolled her eyes at his over-the-top display. "I'm not going to call
the police, dumbass."
Alex squinted at her. "You're not?"
"God you're an idiot. Rapists don't even get punished most of the time,
do you think they're gonna care that you touched my underwear? Plus
they'd probably arrest me instead, cuz you're fucking white."
Alex felt a tinge of empathy. All his interactions with police had been
mundane.
"So then what are you going to do?" Alex asked.
"If I told you, you wouldn't believe me. Plus you'd probably have a panic
attack in anticipation if you did. Nah, it's better to explain it
afterwards."
Alex began to back up towards the door. "What are you going to do to me?"
"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," said Laura. "That would just make
you bitter and maybe even more misogynistic. No. I need you to learn a
lesson."
Laura wasn't making much sense to Alex. It seemed like empty threats at
this point. He continued backing up, just in case.
"What's your real, full name?" said Laura.
"Alexander Gustavo Capello. It's Italian."
"You better not be lying."
"I'm not."
"One more question," said Laura. "What major do you want?"
"Huh?" said Alex.
"What major do you want to start off with?" she asked again.
"I don't understand the question," said Alex. "I've been out of college
for five years."
"Last chance. If you had to go back to college, what major would you
choose?"
"The fuck does this have to do with anything?"
Laura shrugged. "Okay, I guess I'll pick it for you. Sweet dreams."
The meaning of her statement became clear moments later, when she emerged
from the closet with a pair of heels, and swung them at Alex's head with
full strength.
"What the--"
Alex sunk to the floor, the world fading into darkness.
