I mean, shit, nobody’s going to hype their free tube, lesbian paysite, or fetish community by saying, “We’re #34, but we’re trying to get better!” CollarSpace does have a few good indicators that they may be telling the truth, though. For one thing, they’ve been around a pretty long fucking time, kicking off in the MySpace era and still ticking. There’s also the matter of 1.3 million visitors coming by every month, which is a nice, big pool to swim in when you’re looking for a freaky friend. So let’s try to find one, huh?
Whose Got Your Collar?
A lot of websites for grownups hit you with that Adults-Only warning out front. Still, most joints have a front page that serves as either a tour or central hub with or without that warning. Collar Space dispenses with those familiarities entirely, and instead, dropping you right off on their search page. They’re, apparently, pretty fucking serious about helping you find a freaky partner like right now. I appreciate the direct, no-bullshit approach.
You also get a photo and a blurb from a random CollarSpace user. The first face that gawked out at me was some unsmiling old guy who reminded me of the BTK killer, talking about how, “Bondage is freedom, the freedom to let it all go.” So I hit refresh and got a shirtless male submissive photographed from the neck down. Another few spins of the wheel brought me a 60-year-old man showing his shoes, some dork in Germany dressed like a reject from the Matrix, a pan male slave with American flag socks, and a guy with his wrists shackled to his neck, begging for a girlfriend dom.
Finally, I saw a woman, naked and playing the cello. Unfortunately, it was another dude’s profile. I haven’t fucked with the search filters yet, but CollarSpace does seem to be mostly dudes. That isn’t uncommon on these kinds of sites, but it is unfortunate. As I kept hitting the refresh button, however, I did find a couple of couples and ladies. I wish there were a better balance, but let’s see what the search filter turns up.
Can I Find the Right Broad to Sit on My Face?
While I was disappointed by the random selection of horny older men Collar Space kept serving up, I had high hopes for the search function. It’s pretty basic as far as these things go, with no options for specific kinks or sex acts, nor filters for things like hair color, tattoos, or smoking preferences. You can find kinksters worldwide or in any state of the USA, but you can’t dial in a location tighter than that. Sorry to the folks in Texas, but yeah, you may potentially have to drive 14 hours to meet that “local” slave girl.
So, what can you search for? Gender Identity was the first dropdown menu I hit, choosing Female. There’s also Sexuality, Orientation (where you fall on the dominant/submissive spectrum), Ethnicity, and who they’re seeking. You can choose an age range and set a maximum height and weight, but there’s not much else besides a couple of checkboxes for Photos Only and Willing to Relocate.
I figured I’d start with a comprehensive CollarSpace.com search, looking for females of any age or orientation. I would have liked to select my central metro area but had to settle for my state instead. When I hit the Search button, the Santa Claus-looking motherfucker at the top of the screen went away, replaced by a redhead submissive female looking for some kinky fun. That’s what I’m fucking talking about!
CollarSpace doesn’t exactly make it easy to see how many matches you’ve got. It’s a funky, outdated layout that shows you eight matches at a time before you have to click Next Matches. The good news is that there seem to be a lot of active members in my state, so it took a few clicks before I even got to yesterday’s posts. I’m writing this up pretty early in the morning, and many “local” women have already been active on the site today. This place is fucking hopping! That means it should be easy to find a partner for some pegging, ballbusting, whipping, paddling, or whatever S&M perversion you’re looking for.
What’s the Alt.com Connection?
I heard some rumors recently that CollarSpace.com had been bought out by Alt.com and had closed registration. That seemed to line up with my initial experience because the first few times I tried to click any of the new-user registration buttons, I got an error and had to go back. After typing up everything above, though, I went back and tried again. This time, I got shuffled along to a registration area with all the usual questions you expect on a dating or hookup site. Stuff like who I am and what I’m looking for. Right away, I noticed the layout looked a hell of a lot better than what I’d already seen on CollarSpace.
Sure enough, once I finished the process and clicked the validation link in my email box, I was dropped off on the Alt.com front page. So it seems the rumors are at least partly true. The weird thing is that the login and password I choose seem to work over at CollarSpace.com, at least sort of. It lets me enter my credentials, but there is nothing I can do once I’m in. If I click the “Creating a Profile” link from the Welcome page, that shuffles me over to Alt.com again.
If my new Collar Space account doesn’t seem to do anything but get me into Alt, I think it’s fair to say that, yeah, Alt.com has bought it out and closed registration to the old site. What does that mean in a practical sense, though? Well, we seem to be in a transition period. There are still many active CollarSpace.com members using the site they’re used to, but you can’t join them. Maybe you can hit them up once Collar Space is fully absorbed by Alt.com, which I would assume is the plan.
This is good and bad news, depending on how you look at it. The biggest bummer will be on the financial end, especially for those of you with thinner wallets. CollarSpace was always completely free, but Alt’s free membership is almost useless. Like most sex dating sites, you’ve got to pay for the features that let you actually communicate and meet other pervs.
The good news is that combining two of the biggest online kink communities will create an even bigger pool to play in. Bigger is almost always better in these situations, and it may be just a matter of time until we see a BDSM community twice as big as either giant in its current forum. Speaking as a guy who reviews websites for a living, Alt.com is just built better, with more modern features and an overall much nicer presentation.
CollarSpace.com is just a little difficult to recommend at the end of the day since it seems like they’ll probably be shuttering their doors soon. However, their members are still browsable and searchable, and some do list some contact info in their profiles, so you could potentially find a partner here. There are also some free resources and listings of local clubs and events, though they’re delivered in the same outdated format as the rest of the site.
