"You each should have received a secure briefing packet by courier?" he waited while each one held it up. "You may now break the seals. What you are looking at are the plans for the transports which have been designed in secret by the joint efforts of the Knights of Terrellia, the Guardians of Lyconia and the Tank Council on Iridani Five." He waited as they flipped through the pages detailing the proposed Extreme Long Rang Exploration and Peacekeeping Transports. "Excuse me," Breeze Lander interrupted everyone. "What is a TCF-13? I've never heard of that classification of Power Train before." Designed specifically for these four Transports," stated Hob. "It is an improved version of our TCF-10, which is a Nearly- Perpetual Motion Power Plant. Granted they are twice the length of our current Transports," wondered Lydia out loud. "Each of those are actually two joined together. An absolutely brilliant design concept by the Knights, I must say," added Mr Nimbus. "The real challenge is going to be fusing the components from each Contributing Race. Terrellian, Lyconian, Demonian, Draconian and Tank." Now it was understood why the back end looked concaved. "Excuse me," Lydia had a question. "I see here that the Terrellian Driver Security Program has been omitted?" Now Hob grinned, "It has been replaced by a Tank Security System to allow the TCF-13 to synchronize with the rest of the systems. "Might I ask, what are the names of these new Transports?" asked Delia Scarr. Now the previously unseen observers made themselves known as Queen Moll Trill spoke up. "They are the Academy Stars, and each will be designated by the Academy responsible for its testing." "Delia, your Academy's will be known as LIGA Star," stated Natani. "But you may give it a real name if you wish." "You do understand it is bad luck to change the name of a Transport," pointed out Otru. He was wondering how they could add to the names after the Academies were done testing them, the way they had done with Snarl who was now Phoenix Snarl. "They will remain in the inventory of the Academies testing them," stated Tarriana. "We have learned a lot from last summer's Tracker Scout Mission aboard Talon. Those scouts now attending the IGPA's are at the top of their classes. Something we wish to continue as well as encourage." "Colonel Pierce," Donnie looked up into the view screen at the Supreme Commander. "The Queens Council has designated IMA as the official Prep- Academy for the Intergalactic Academies." "When do you expect them to be completed?" asked Donnie finally. "Within the next two weeks," answered Jarda Nimbus. "When Reaper and Wolfs Bane leave Iridani in four days they will be escorting two trucks from Ute Trucking that will be carrying the Power Trains." Of course, one of them wasn't a Cadet. "Major Howell, please report to my office," he told her. "You wanted me, sir?" "Major, everything I say to you now is beyond Top Secret." "I understand Sir," she said as she closed the door to the office. "I have decided that you are going to be the Commander of IMA Star. And this is the list of your first crew, please assemble them at Shuttle One for immediate departure within the hour." "IMA Star, Sir?" Now he grinned, "We are one of four Academies selected to test a New Transport Design. At the end of the testing, it becomes ours. I will brief you and the crew enroute, but until we take off, no one is to know what is going on. Now, I need to go and collect one of the crew members. He was counting on Malissa's youngest and newest Sister being here with her momma to get him through this task without an argument. We have been given one of the Prototype Transports to test, and I was allowed, to choose the crew," he said. "Malissa, this is a good thing," said Sophie. "Please Momma?" "Close your mouth and get your ass on the shuttle, Captain. Cadets, get that gear stowed," she barked as she dropped her own gear on the transport pallet. "Captain, I doubt you'll need the rifle but I was told all of your Gear." Now I was puzzled as I secured me Cal. 50 in its travel case along with the rest of my gear. Then four Tanks joined us with authorization from my Daddy. "Are we going to see the Double Star?" asked Randi of one of the Tanks, and he was rewarded with a smile. "Go ahead and grab that empty seat, Jr Commander," Daddy directed Maleeza as they boarded. "Commander Howell, is this everyone?" "Yes Sir," she answered. "Captain Martin, get us airborne and set course for Kelvin Nine," he directed. I looked at Maleeza where she sat with Randi, their heads together whispering. Then just after Martin kicked in the star drive, Daddy stood up. "You thirty Cadets have been chosen as the first crew for the testing and development of IMA Star. Jr Commander Shore, would you and Jr Commander Pierce care to fill them in?" he asked. They stopped their whispering then and began paying attention. Then he began in earnest filling us in on what was happening. I could hardly believe that my sister and Randi were being made Junior Commanders over the Driving Crew. But I, was in command of the rest of the crew, the troops. Major Howell was the overall Transport Commander in charge of everyone though. Daddy was just going along as the Academy Commandant. After a few minutes of almost moping, I realized that it was a sound decision. "I was really hoping to be assigned to DIGA Star, but the Council said it would be better if I wasn't on the same transport as my son Terrence," she said. "Oh," giggled Maleeza. "You're his fifth Momma, who was on Dianthima." "Yes, I was fixing a drive train problem they had after the attack," she confirmed. "But I grew up on her though." She sat with the command crew who would become responsible for monitoring and maintaining the Power Train, going over the differences that they would need to learn and know. "Once we complete our Shakedown to ensure everything is working properly. We will travel to a designated training area used by the IGP Academies. There we will engage the other three Stars in Transport exercises," Donnie informed them. "You can expect that our evaluators will not be giving us any hints," said Gretchen having read further into the secure mission packet. "The Knights of Terrellia are taking this personal." "Why would they be doing that?" asked Erika. "Because the transports were designed by the Knights in cooperation with the Tank Council who designed the Power Trains," stated Randi. "You guys designed these things?" asked Erika. "It was a joint effort," said Maleeza. Now Erika realized that most of the Cadets on this mission were either Tracker Scouts or Transport Brats. She began going over the details about the Transports armament and capabilities. Donnie grinned seeing how serious she was now taking everything. Not that she wasn't serious before, but now she was fully focused on the mission. The planet was secure, surrounded by a network of satellites. These same satellites watched for trouble from other places. But while on the planet, every transport weapon or troop weapon would only fire a stun charge. No one would be more than stunned, and no transports would be damaged. But those same satellites would ensure that the Transports reacted the same as if they were hit with a full charge. Just like on the other transports, the Ion Canons retracted. They could be run by the TC, (Transport Commander), or by individual gunners sitting in the gunner's seat in the Gun Turrets. Also, there were six, armed Hover Bikes and two FAVs that could be deployed from each Transport. But the FAVs were new to the Transports. The Hover Bikes deployed by dropping through the trapdoor. The FAVs deployed on a sliding track that extended out the sides at the rear. Everyone was of course, curious to see their actual deployment. The Academy had FAVs, so everyone here knew how to operate one. the hover bikes on the other hand would need some training. "So, how did we manage to score one of these babies?" asked Gretchen. "We've been designated as the official IGP Prep Academy. Also, if you look at the other info you'll see that they can link with and support the PTRV's and any other IGP Transport," he told her quietly. "Why do they need a Prep Academy for the IGA's?" she asked quietly "The Intergalactic Freeway, and the Intergalactic Railroad are being extended. They've figured out how to create Cloud portals, thanks to Norie Doru." "A Cloud Portal? How big is one of those?" she asked. "From what I understand about three dozen sets of Portal Pillars," he answered. "Freaking huge. My wife's niece, Night Wolf started the Freeway Builders, building them. Her fianc?, Tangie's youngest brother Taizu has their Builders, building them from their end." "How did you find out?" asked Gretchen. "They told me. But these Portals, they will be like, Interchanges or Railroad Stations. Set times opening for incoming and outgoing traffic. Scheduled destinations into the other Cloud Systems." "But why are the next group of Stars being detailed to patrol Earta?" "The Earta System is actually the closest to reach Second Home," said Erika quietly. "Norie, and Rachel told me about it. But travelers are going to need the protection of the Double Stars." Slowly they began dropping through the atmosphere, the forward view up on the display for those in the back as the manufacturing facility came into view. "IMA One, you are cleared to land behind DIGA Three," came the instructions from the ground controller. "LIGA One on approach behind IMA One." "TIGA Two on the ground." Came the reports over the radio. They watched as the first two shuttles landed next to their designated transport. There were controllers on the ground with lighted wands directing the pilots where to land. At each transport stood a Kelvin representative waiting. "IMA One, on the ground, shutting down," reported Martin. "Sir we are landed," stated the Crew Chief unnecessarily. As the doors opened everyone grabbed their gear and began filing off. The Line Troops to one side, the Command Group to the other. "Welcome to Kelvin Nine, I am Sassy Nimbus, your assigned Technician," the Kelvin introduced herself. "Colonel, you may board any time you are ready." "Well you two," began Gretchen. "Show us what we need to know." I let Randi show her where her gear went as I stowed ours together in the sub-commander's room. 'Wow there's a lot more room on this one,' I thought to myself as I started onto the command deck. There were three Command stations, and two each driving, navigation and communications. Looking toward the back I saw Erika looking over the Troop Commanders Station. The moment she sat down the HUD came to life around her. She looked at me and grinned as her second in command was taking her seat. Sitting down I let my chair swivel to the front. The HUD coming to life. 'Initiate HUD Activation?' blinked at me. I reached forward and tapped the Activation button in the hologram display in front of me. The Transport Statistics began displaying. I reached out to tap the IGP Transport location display. 'IGP Locator not authorized,' flashed in front of me. "Please register Authorization." The hologram was flashing red and I blushed realizing that I had forgotten to log in my Biometric and DNA signature. I placed my hand on the scanner of the armrest. "Welcome JTC Pierce, Maleeza. Retrieving records from IGP Command and Talon," reported the computer. "Command Authority not recognized," blared a warning from the Primary Command station. Looking I saw Major Howell as she looked embarrassed. "Sorry Major," said Sassy Nimbus. She placed her hand on the scan pad. "Authorization of Primary Command to Major Howell, Gretchen, IMA." "Authorization granted. Registering DNA and Biometric Readings. Relaying to IGP Command." There was a brief pause, "Welcome Transport Commander Howell. Downloading crew list, qualifications and authorizations." "JTC Shore in Temporary Command pending TC Howell's Driver and Navigator Certification," announced the Transports Computer. "Attention, please standby for hood installation." I watched as a huge mobile crane moved up to the front, the hood section suspended from heavy cables as it inched into position above the Power Trains. Wow, I could hardly believe it, as the workers moved in, tools ready as they began securing the hood to the frame. The whole thing took maybe thirty minutes as we continued to run down the systems checks. "Why won't it let Gretchen have full command authorization?" asked my Daddy. "All Transport Commanders have to have either Driver/Navigator Certification or as a minimum, Navigator Certification," Randy answered. "So, I get to learn to drive this baby?" asked Gretchen as she started toward the secondary driver's station. "Whoa, we have to initiate the Cold Fusion Power Train first." Stated Sindee. "Colonel, Commander Howell, if you would join me here please," interrupted Sassy Nimbus. "If you will each sign for your Override Keys?" "Ponder, Terrence, Jr Commander. Driving records downloading from Lily Pond," responded the Computer. "DIGA Star, ready for initial start," reported the Transport. The Lyconian Ion 5, Canons were the most up to date installed on a Transport. Then she saw that she had two Draconian made Dragon's Breaths at her disposal, Quad mounted Gatling Lasers. She felt her soft giggle escape as her clitty tingled, these were just added, they hadn't been in the briefing material she'd read over. The Stars were purring like kittens, the power levels building in both the Active and Reserve cells. Donnie stood watching the Command crew as they checked and rechecked everything in preparation to head for the open Freeway. Maleeza kept looking up and blushing though. Not surprising we were the first ready to roll out of the facility. "Go ahead, you deserve it," she spoke to the primary computer. Suddenly the Transport announced to everyone, "I'm A Star, baby. Welcome to my show?" Randi, Maleeza and Sindee all high fived. "I, M, A, Star, departing Secure Facility," announced Gretchen as she tried not to grin. "Oh, come on Colonel, even you had to make that connection, right?" I finally began laughing. Yes, I had, but I was afraid to be the one to bring it up. But apparently Maleeza had made sure that everyone didn't miss it. "Coming up on Reaper's six," announced Noel Corgi on Navigation. "DIGA Star is right behind us, TIGA Star exiting the gate," called out Judi. "Ma'am?" prompted Randi. "Acknowledged," she finally said. "Time to Portal?" "Five Minutes, Ma'am." "Accelerating to portal Speed." "Reaper transmitting Coordinates." "Locked on to Reapers Portal Coordinates." "Light up the Beacon, Noel," stated Maleeza. "Beacon activated, acquiring beacons from," he began as the other Stars began their own reports. We hurried to get the secondary crew into place so they could begin learning to drive, navigate and communicate. "Jr Commander Shore has the Command Chair," announced Gretchen as she slid into the seat beside Judi. "Randi, teach us what we need to know about procedures. She knew that Wolfs Bane was five weeks away from her scheduled overhaul, and was about to suggest that Reaper slow down. "Ma'am, they have a failing Core in the Primary Induction Sequencer," reported her Navigator Tsuka. "Gripper, can we link with them the same way we link with the other Stars?" she asked. "Roger Commander, reconfiguring rear linkup to accommodate LSF3 Hood," he stated. "Jepp, start slowing to link up with Wolfs Bane." "Break, Wolfs Bane. We read your Primary Induction Coil as close to critical. Suggest you go to secondary, and link up with us." "Negative on secondary Power Train. We've already tried to switch over," responded Lydia. "Tsuka, on my mark brake for three seconds. Commander Shore, when we brake we want you to shoot it into our rear funnel and scram your Power Train." "Roger," "Mark!" The Transport rocked and shuddered a bit as Wolfs Bane was locked into the rear linkup position. "Copa, follow me," ordered the Tank Technician, Gremlin. "LIGA Star do you have a problem?" requested Reaper from the front. "Primary will not Scram." Reported Lydia. She could be heard in the background giving the emergency scram override code, over and over. "Academy Stars, Emergency Link up now," screamed Sassy Nimbus. "All Techs report to Wolfs Bane ASAP." "Lydia, what's happening?" requested Otru. "Super Nova in fifteen minutes," said Lydia. "Turn us loose LIGA." "Negative Commander. She looked at it then dropped the tray back onto the counter and rushed out the door. "What is it?" Trader asked Pam who was herself headed for the exit from the driver's section. "Wolfs Bane is in trouble. They have a failing Induction Coil and the Primary won't Scram," she said just before she too was out the door at a full run. "Shit!" Garr Shore sat frozen in fear. "Garr?" he looked up at Trader. "They'll make it." "Trader, if the Primary isn't disengaging, and won't Scram, the Power Train will blow up when the Induction Coil goes," said Brandi Ferris. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The front grill was gone, cut away by plasma torches. Copa and Sassy Nimbus, having the most experience with IGP Power trains, both lay atop the Primary Power Train. Both taking long deep breaths as they pulled the Primary Induction Coil by hand. They hadn't needed the lubrication to squirt down the inner lining, blood from Sassy's injured right hand had flowed freely to lubricate the shaft. But even injured she had refused to give up. Halfway out, it locked into the retractor which finished the job, Scramming the Primary in the process. Now Copa called behind them for a Med Team as he wrapped parts of his shirt around her hand where the three fingers were missing. There wasn't enough room to tie a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and he knew she was only moments from going into shock. "Are they clear yet?" asked Lydia. "Negative, we have to get Sassy out, she's almost unconscious from blood loss." As she was finally pulled clear another technician activated the force shield. "All clear, you can engage your secondary now." Med Techs were busy working on Sassy. With the full scram of the Primary the Secondary took several minutes to reach full power. Everyone now sat back relieved, but still concerned for Sassy Nimbus. "Nikko, you have the Com. I'm going back to check on Miss Nimbus," Scarlet hurried to the Med Bay. "Doc, how is she?" "She'll be fine. Just a little shock. But with your Med Facilities, she'll have all her fingers again by the time we reach Lyconia," reported the Doc from Wolfs Bane. That was when everyone realized the new Transports were equipped with a Regeneration Bed in their Medical Station. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The six transports dropped through the Portal on Lyconia, Citizens and traffic stopped to Gawk at the four in the middle. It had been almost more than Randi could stand as he remained in Command of IMA Star. All his instincts had told him to rush back to check on his mother and her crew. But he was in the Command Seat, his own crew needed him here. He knew that Maleeza was on the Comm channel with them, and would let him know if anything happened. Gretchen sat fighting her excitement, she'd just shot her first portal as the Driver. Three more and she would be certified as a Novice Driver, the minimum requirement. Then all she would need was to be certified as a Navigator to be considered a fully qualified Transport Commander. She was still driving when they reached LIGA and the Palace. They watched as Wolfs Bane pulled slowly into the Maintenance Barn, an army of technicians ready to descend on her and begin the overhaul. Everyone was wondering who the other Escort was going to be, to get them to the unknown Training Planet. There was an entourage of dignitaries waiting for them as they began filing off to 'stretch their legs'. And then Queen Natani was there with Guardian Commander Preen. "Sassy Nimbus, Copa Void please step forward," requested Preen. When they were standing in front of the Queen, Commander Preen began to read from a parchment. "In recognition of their acts of Heroism while serving aboard the Academy Stars, these brave souls with disregard for their own safety, acted to save not only a sentient Transport but the lives of her crew. I, Queen Natani Yorre, hereby declare you both, Guardians Knights of the Lyconian Quadrant." Her Vershang touched lightly on each shoulder. Then Preen presented both with their own Vershang. This was another first. Never before, had either a Kelvin or a Tank been made a Guardian Knight of Lyconia. And then they walked beside the Queen as she toured the new Transports for the first time. She stepped up to Scarlet, her arms going around her daughter inlaw first and then Nikko. "Don't worry, you will both have one of these to Command as a pair," she whispered into their ears. A feast had been prepared for the Cadet Crews, and they stepped into the Banquet Hall. Dorri instantly latching onto Scarlet. "Have you told him yet?" she asked. "Told him what?" she blushed. "Never mind, you have all the time in the world. But please, refrain from the Tagolian Frost and I want you to be extra careful," Dorri rested her hand gently on Scarlet's tummy. Her smile growing to light up the room. "Dorri?" questioned Natani not having seen the full hand gesture. "I'm just happy to see our oldest and our first Daughter inlaw," she lied. "Nightmare," finished Dessi. "Light em up," called Commander Otru. "Nightmare has an Emergency." They could hear Saniya in the background trying to raise Nightmare. "Reaper to Academy Stars, we are going into the training area HOT!" stated Otru. "This is not a training exercise. You will follow me in and spread out." "Neela, notify IGP Command." "Transports let's roll." The alert warnings were going off through the transports and the IGP Academy, everyone rushing to their duty stations. "Activating Jump Beacon," called out Noel Corgi. "Locking onto Reapers Coordinates," called out Judi at the Navigators Station. They were barely out of the LIGA compound when they hit full power, and Maximum Safe Speed. "Portal in seven, six, five, four, three," "Portal Activation," called out Maleeza as the temporary emergency Portal opened in front of Reaper. The HUD lit up with the destination. The ring of security satellites showed there were quite a few missing. "Nightmare do you copy?" requested Reaper. "Nigh_mar_ is under at____," came the garbled reply. "Deactivating Training Mode Control," called out Saniya. Fifteen long minutes later they were exiting the portal on Eclipse Three. "Ok everyone, Eyes open. I want every System ready for," began Otru as a ship came out of nowhere, laser canons firing away at her. Suddenly a hail of what looked like flames shot out from the formation. The ship, smoking and out of control crashed off to the side of the Freeway. "Got em'," called out Erika. "Good shooting Vernia." "Oh shit," breathed Otru. "What is it?" everyone was looking at the drone video of the downed Ship. "Saniya, does that look like the ship Lars Grendel destroyed on Orion?" he asked. "Draco System, Hunter Class Scout," she identified it from the few files they'd gotten before the ship had been destroyed. "Randi, we need to get there now," said Maleeza her finger touching the flashing dot that marked Nightmares location. "IMA Star heading for Eclipse Two," he said as they sped past the others who were stopping to investigate. "LIGA Star on your Six," called out Scarlet. "IMA, do you see what we see?" they were all looking at a Draco System, Swarm Ship high over top of Nightmare. Dozens of the Hunter Scouts swarming around Nightmare and causing the radio interference. "Commander Shore, how high can these Dragons reach?" asked Erika. "They have ten times the range of the Ion-5's." the Ion-5's could reach up into the outer atmosphere. "TIGA you stay here and secure anyone that exits that Ship," commanded Otru as they began following IMA and LIGA. "Emergency Portal activation, on my mark," called out Randi. "Mark!" a temporary portal opened with Nightmares coordinates put in. Two miles away the swarm of hunters only had time to notice the portal opening before the first Transport exited. This one didn't wait, they began dropping the Hunters before they could reorient. As the numbers began to diminish on the surface the Swarm ship tried to lock onto the Transports, and missed with their first Salvo. In the number one Dragon Turret, Erika depressed the gun trigger seconds before the other three Dragons of the two Star's opened fire on it. Great holes were ripped open in her hull, explosions began ripping it apart. Suddenly the swarm ships began dropping, out of control. "TIGA Star to Reaper, this thing was crewed by Skecksies. I repeat, the Hunters are crewed by Skecksies." "Roger, notify Star Command." "Good Job Cadets. I think we know more about how capable the Stars are." The Hunters hadn't tried to destroy Nightmare, they were trying take her without damaging her, for their own use. Of course, they hadn't known that this was a training area and that the weapons had been locked into training mode upon entering. Obviously, these Skecksies weren't completely independent of the Hive Mind. They had shut down as soon as their Command ship had been destroyed. But if another Command group arrived, they could be reactivated. But how had they gotten here? And how had they gotten hold of a Draco Swarm Ship? Why was it even in this Cloud System? "Sir, we have Trackers reporting in, they were on their way to participate in the evaluation of the Stars," stated Reaper's Communications Officer. "Commander Nikkei, I am sending a request to Draconia. I wish to have Lars Grendel come to help in the investigation," stated Otru. "Nightmare was getting things set up for the Academy Stars evaluation, when she was set upon by a Draco Swarm Ship." He was watching Lars eyes and saw the total surprise. "Are, is everyone safe? How many troopers did we lose?" she asked. "None, they were trying to take her intact. But they attacked us and then IMA Star and LIGA Star destroyed the Swarm Ship in orbit. The Hunter Scouts were crewed by Skecksies. But we don't know anything about Draco Ships other than the information we got before Lars Hunter Scout was destroyed." "Keeli, Clarita, I need to go help them discover what they can," stated Lars. "You will take the Second Squad with you," she held up her hand to stop Leonida's protest. "I have Leonida here with me." Other Transports had arrived to assist in the investigation as well. But it was Lars Grendel whom everyone was counting on for answers. The Skecksies had known just where to target Nightmare to disable their weapons as well as their communications. But they hadn't been prepared for the arrival of the new Transports, or the firepower they carried with them. There was a lot of hushed discussions between the IGP Transport Commanders, the Commandants and IGP Command. But no one was sharing it with the crews of the Academy Stars just yet. Those crews were not sitting idly by though, they were gleaning their own information from everything around them.
