I was startled when I heard a woman’s voice behind me. I turned my head and there stood Angela with a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and two glasses with ice in the other. Just like her to show up when I needed a friend and some comfort. I smiled realising that she’d always been there to pick me up when I was down.
‘You look like you could use a drink’ she said to me, understanding exactly what was on my mind.
‘Thanks’ I said as I took the bottle from her and drank a few swallows of the dark and fiery liquid.
‘Hey, slow down there before you keel over, I brought the glasses for a reason’ she said laughing.
‘Thanks for the concern, but I’m drowning my sorrows tonight’ I said and I smiled back at her.
She took the bottle from me and sat down next to me, pouring us each a drink over the ice in the glasses. When she handed me my glass our hands touched briefly and we smiled at each other. We’d been the best of friends for a few years, but nothing had progressed beyond that even though I’ll admit that I’d considered trying at least a few times.
I knew that she was also nursing a heart-ache, a relationship with an abusive boyfriend that had taken all of her strength and courage to walk away from. It had been a few weeks but her confidence was growing again and that radiant woman that I had first met was re-appearing again.
We sat talking and drinking, sharing everything with each other as we always did, taking comfort from each other’s company and when the bottle lay empty next to us, we realised just how long we had been sitting there. By now the alcohol had worked its way into my bloodstream and I was definitely feeling the mellowed out effects.
‘Well that just wont do’, Angela said as she started to stand up.
The alcohol had taken its effects on her too. I saw her sway gently from side to side, trying to gain her balance as she reached her feet.
‘I have another bottle downstairs if you’re interested?’ she said and I saw her sly smile and the plain invitation written on her face.
I wasn’t sure how to re-act. Here was a woman that I considered a really close friend inviting me back to her apartment for more than just a drink.
‘Coming?’ she asked sweetly.
‘Sure, give me a few minutes. I need to collect a few things’ I answered. I needed to buy some time to consider this idea a little more. I needed to collect my wits.
I stopped by my apartment and as I closed the door behind me, the doubts set in. Had I really seen an invitation on her face or were my perceptions distorted by the alcohol flowing through my veins? I stood for a few minutes trying to set my mind around the idea.
Angela wasn’t what you’d call drop-dead gorgeous, but there was no doubt that she was beautiful. At 24, she was small and petite with long dark brown hair that flowed half-way down her back and her soft brown eyes and sensual lips were the perfect accent to her tanned complextion. I’d joined her on the rooftop while she tanned in nothing but a bikini once or twice, and so I’d seen what was hidden under the baggy clothes she usually wore.

When I knocked on her door and she answered, I was completely unprepared for what greeted me. In the time that I had been at my apartment Angela had taken a shower and was standing before me in a soft, silky robe and her still damp hair was tumbling down the back of it. I noticed with some delight and a catch in my breath that I could see her firm nipples poking gently against the fabric of her robe.
‘I thought you’d gotten lost’ she said smiling at me.
‘No, I had to take care of a few things’ I answered, trying to hide my wandering eyes from her.
‘Why don’t you come in?’ she asked sweetly.
I crossed the threshold and she closed the door behind me. There was no turning back now.
Her apartment hadn’t changed in the few weeks that I hadn’t seen it. It was still a peaceful place, not over-decorated or under-furnished, it had that touch of just-right and I knew that this was a reflection of the woman who lived here.
I still felt a little giddy from the alcohol I’d drank earlier and I’m sure than Angela noticed that too.
‘Would you like another drink?’ she offered.
‘Sure, what will be our pleasure tonight?’ I questioned back.
She laughed a naughty giggle, ‘Hmmm… I think we might need something a little more mellow for now’ she said as she looked me up and down seductively.
I knew where this was leading and to be honest, I was scared. With both of us recovering from previous relationships, it could turn out to be a messy affair, especially since our friendship was so important to both of us.
Angela opened a bottle of red wine and left it standing on the table, coming over to me she said, ‘You seem a little tense. What’s wrong?’
‘I’m not sure that this is the right thing Angela, I’m worried that it will come between our friendship’ I said nervously, knowing that I was probably blowing my chances completely.
‘I’m sure’ she said and when I looked into her eyes I could s
ee that she was sincere.
‘The wine will take a while to breathe, why don’t you take a quick shower and relax a little?’
I definitely needed to relax, so I decided that her suggestion was a good one and took to the shower. The hot water rushed down over my body and after a few minutes I began feel the tension draining out me. I was glad that the shower helped clear the fogginess in my mind too, I wanted to remember this night for a long time.
When I emerged from the bathroom in nothing but a towel wrapped around my waist, I felt genuinely refreshed and relaxed. I found Angela in the kitchen pouring a glass of red wine for each of us and she smiled when she saw that I’d regained my calm.
‘You definitely look better’ she said as she handed my wineglass to me.
I smiled at her and shook my head, ‘I definitely feel better too’
She came to me then, putting her arms around my shoulders, and as if she sensed my reluctance, she whispered in my ear, ‘Relax, I want this. I’ve wanted this for a very long time but I’ve been too afraid to tell you.’
I moved so that I could see her eyes and there was nothing in them to betray her words to me.
I felt hesitant and I couldn’t decide whether to kiss her or not and she must have sensed that too because a heart-beat later, her soft lips found mine and she kissed me. All my hesitation and reluctance melted away at the taste of those sweet, soft lips and I couldn’t remember why I began fighting this in the first place.
We kissed each other’s lips, sucking them into our mouths and tasting each other for the first time. I suddenly realised that I had been wanting this moment for a long time too and that I had only suppressed those desires for fear of damaging our friendship. All that desire came rushing back to me as I let my inhibitions slip away and gave into the moment.
