“You forgot these, Kathy,” she said and proudly held up

Lyssa got me out of the tub, helped me dry off, and

gentle, and I just needed that so badly that I started

She pulled back the bed covers and had me get in and I
was still weepy. I looked up into her deep brown eyes
and asked her to hold me.
She hesitated and then broke down.
“Oh my God, Kathy, I don’t know if I can,” she said and
sat down on the bed, a flood of tears pouring down her

I was startled by her reaction. How could I have made
her cry? “What’s wrong, darling?,” I asked softly,
sitting up to hold her. “Tell me.”
She just looked at me, tears falling, and asked, “You
really don’t know, Kathy?”
Somehow, I did know, but I didn’t ever let it surface.
We’d been friends so long, so close, but I now, well, I
did know why her feelings were tearing her apart.
I wiped a tear from her cheek. “I think I just really
realized it now, tonight. Talk to me, Lyssa.”
“I love you,” she said, and with those words opened up a
world of revelations for me. “I have for eight years.”
Her head dropped and the tears flowed and I pulled her

scared of losing my dearest friend. And I confessed to

to go with all of these emotions. She was so kind and

And now it was two nights later and I’d decided what to

“Lyssa?” I asked, and she looked up from her rummaging
through her purse. “What would you like for Christmas?”
She gave me a small smile, started to say something, and

will do. I’m surprised you haven’t found something
already.”
I kept shaving my legs, almost finished with them now. I
