Sahi and I have been friends for as long as I would care to remember. It’s been a relationship that is almost right out of a sitcom, best friends that love each other more than anything else in the world but are afraid that accepting and acknowledging it would ruin the special bond they share. I suppose both of us have known for an eternity how much we both love each other but still we choose to turn a blind eye and treat each other as nothing more than friends.
I remember the first day I saw her in her class, slim and petite, curly hair left open to give a naughty girl look, innocence in her eyes that made the look almost surreal giving her a contrasting personality that made her seem mysterious and at the same time ever so endearing. And I will never forget the first look that she gave me, shy eyes and a silent smile that almost sealed us as ‘US.’ And yet, six years on and we were still best friends but not yet a couple.
Admittedly, I am not a great looker or a hunk per se. and I especially don’t think I could ever have done something good to have even dreamt about having a girl like her to call my own. I am a geeky and eccentric young man with boyish looks that girls seem to deem ‘cute’ not making me one of the much sought after or adored chaps around. I am fairly tall and am a natural athlete. I love running and I suppose that has kept me in good stead through the years. There used to be time when I used to run the miles between our dorms every morning to have breakfast with her.
In the time that she then took to get ready and reach class, I was able to reach back to my dorm, have a shower get ready and reach class almost at the same time (and we were always at least 10 minutes late!) I reckon my grades and the fact that almost everyone thought we were a couple saved us from the wrath of the teachers who seemed to consider our arrival as the benchmark for the latest you could arrive into the class without any repercussions.
Well, anyways, Sahi somehow I suppose got tired of waiting around for me to take the first step and I wouldn’t blame her for that. I suppose 5 years is enough time for anybody to decide whether or not they wanna spend the rest of their lives together. She was proposed to by another of her classmates and whilst I was away interning in another city, she had accepted. I reckon they’ve been going around for close to a year or so now. This is where the story begins…
After college had gotten over, Sahi was decidedly going home. I had a few ambitions in mind and I never saw much of a career as an engineering graduate. I reckoned I needed a post graduation at least to move somewhere in life. After applying to several colleges, I finally (and ironically) got a call from one of the best institutes in the country in Sahi’s town. After she had told me she was going around with someone else, somehow what we shared had suffered and being in different towns after graduation, it was an occasional call and a chat over gtalk that kept us in touch.
Although the conversations had grown much shorter and way too formal for our liking. The thought of meeting her again incited mixed emotions of elation and apprehension and I wasn’t even sure she might meet me. But she did. I called her up one day and her dad received the call. I have known her dad well since our first year and he wasn’t aware I was in his city let alone was to be pursuing a course here! He called me over for dinner and after a long and inconvenient bout of refusing with lame excuses, I finally had to relent.
That evening, Sahi and me spoke to each other openly after more than a year and a half. I kind of know her a little too well and she doesn’t necessarily have to say things to express her emotions with me. Her general talk about her relationship and her own ambitions gave me a feeling she wasn’t really happy with the relationship. I didn’t confront her though and in hindsight, that probably was a mistake.
We continued meeting a little more often than we should have and once again were being drawn close to each other. How much had I missed being with her I cannot express. Well, our old group from college had decided to head off on a camping trip through the woods. Around the monsoons, the hills on the outskirts of the town are lush green and the trek although a tad risky, is quite an experience in itself.
We have been doing this for a long time and we always carried just two tents. With the 7 of us, the distribution was uneven and did not qualify us to be able to divide the groups on the basis of gender in each tent. We always joined the two tents and the 7 of us were more or less a snug fit in the tent. With just one couple in the group, the couple had the pleasure of sleeping beside each other, and the others, well the girls were on one side and the guys on another.
This time around though the equation was changed as there were more than one couple now and so they were sleeping next to each other in the tent. That meant I was sleeping next to Sahi. In all these years together, the only thing I have done that is remotely capable of being qualified as intimate has been giving her my shoulder to cry on. Never have we even held hands before! (yup, 7 years and nothing!) Sleeping next to her was a little awkward but I guess the two of us were a little too sapped from the trek to care too much. As we all snuggled in, the couples were busy sharing words of love (and maybe a bout of light petting) whilst the two of us fell asleep. Sometime in the night when my sleep was broken and I lay sort of half aware and half awake, I sensed her hand wrapped around my chest as she lay there snuggled up against me.
Young men and their hormones should not be trusted too much. After much argument with myself and an eternity of trying to lay my qualms to rest, I finally let her head rest on my shoulders as I put my arm under her head and wrapped it up across her resting my palm on the curve of her stomach as she lay sideways facing me. In the dark of the tent, when I looked at her, all I saw was the silhouette of her hair as it ran down her face. I suppose that was when she woke up as she moved her hand across my chest and entwined her fingers with my other hand.
I lay there confused, bewildered and more than anything else, madly in love with the woman I so long held so dear. And in the moment, as I kissed her forehead, she lifted her head and kissed my lips. Although it wasn’t her first kiss, it was mine. In my dreams when I would imagine of a time whence I would share my first kiss, never could I have understood how emoting the act of touching lip to lip could be. Yes, I was 24 when I got my first kiss but that first kiss made every minute of my worthless life worth having lived for. I suppose it was instincts that took over from there.
As I kissed her sweet lips, my hand moved from her stomach and traced the gorgeously smooth curve of her hips stopping at the waistband of her tracks and dragging them a little lower. Then my hand moved back again and lost as I was in the kiss, moved under her hands to reach the side of her breast. Yes I am a novice and I have only her to speak of as a benchmark and her breast (or whatever little I felt of it) felt both soft and succulent and at the same time firm. Her breasts are the size that would fill my hand brilliantly to be an almost perfect fit. The kind that would make for a great stress reliever ball with the perfect degree of softness and hardness, if I was in love before, I must have reached heaven now!
And then I was aware of her movements. Her hands were moving along my chest feeling the rise of the muscle just above my heart, tracing the curves of my chest and then moving to my stomach. Then she moved her hand under my shirt and felt my stomach every so lightly playing around with the hair that grows just under the navel. Then her finger stopped and her thumb and forefinger began playing with my navel. Unlike others, my navel isn’t a small hole in the stomach but is a small rise
instead. She played around with it for some time before her hand once again moved upwards and her finger played and teased my nipple.
At about the same time, my hand which was still moving on her sides, somehow managed to drag her shirt up and in the next sweeping movement felt the smooth skin on her stomach. It was the first time ever that I felt the touch of a woman and touched a woman and I couldn’t stop falling in love with her. As my hand grew bolder and my brain kept losing the fight to stay in control, I brushed the strap of her bra on her back.
She had a trapping that buckled from behind and in that mode of exploring and playing with her strap, it unwittingly unsnapped. I guess the sudden release of pressure on her breasts snapped some sense into her as she finally made sense of what was going on. Her kiss gently parted and as our lips drew further, she said we needed to stop. And almost ashamed of what I had done, I too drew apart. My hand left her body but the other still held on to her hand.
I guess she took control from there on and said we were being stupid just driven by hormones. We both probably needed to cool off and should take a walk. Even though she said that, her hand did not leave mine. As I slowly found my voice, I agreed and so we both sat up. She let go of my hand and we both got out of the tent to head off for a walk.
For some time, neither of us spoke a word. You know the duet between Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman, ‘Something Stupid?’ Well that’s exactly what happened. I blurted the stupid words ‘I love you!’ in that moment of uneasy silence. She stopped and looked at me. In the little light that seeped through the clouds, I could see in her eyes the confusion, the torment of being driven apart and the sadness that followed in her heart.
She turned away and I was sure was sobbing. I felt like an idiot there. I was lost and didn’t know what to do. Whether to step up to her and comfort her and apologize or just wait there and acknowledge what I had just said and see what she had to say. I decided on the former and I stepped up to her. I put my hand on her shoulder and she turned towards me. As I saw her face, words failed me. All I could do was bend lower, move her in my arms and kiss her. This time, the kiss felt different.
I felt I was forcing it on her and was about to withdraw when she returned the kiss. If my first kiss was memorable, my second was eternal. I realized how much the kiss meant. It meant her acceptance, it meant that after 7 years of a childish kiddie romance, we were finally together. It meant so much that we could have been having the worst kiss of our lives but the emotion would’ve been enough to make it one of the best. But it was a good kiss. Eternal. In the woods, under the branches of some tree, stood with the woman of my dreams in my arms as we shared the most wonderfully intimate moment of our lives.
At the break of dawn as the sun finally rose along with mild drops of rain, I stood kissing the girl of my dreams. As our friends walked out of the tent, we were still locked in the embrace. I was one with my soulmate…
