The Perseus was docked in a larger holding area for the bigger space crafts that came through. Charlotte found a seat in the waiting area away from the other passengers leaving Perseus. She looked out to the large opening on the far side of the port that looked as if it were an open door to space. She was aware of the force field that held to protect the people within the port, but the sight was still much more impressive than looking out through a ship’s windows. Thousands of stars and distant nebulas shone brightly. She could even see a sliver of the planet Semati, which Leeto orbited, in one corner of the opening.
Families and other groups of people were beginning to gather at tables, and excited conversations of anticipation buzzed through the air.
Different local aliens were beginning to set up small food carts along the waiting area in anticipation for the large human population coming through.
Charlotte recognized a Colakian, an arthropod species that resembled an Earth millipede standing halfway upright. He stood behind a small cart, gesturing with his many arms at different colored pastes in small ornamental bowls. He had a few people stopping to talk to him, most looking more excited to talk with him than examine his pastes.
Another vendor that had set up shop was an Aranthedian, which excited Charlotte. They were a reptilian species that she had always thought were exceptionally alluring, but she’d only seen them in pictures before. He gave an audible sigh… or grunt, Charlotte wasn’t sure... and stared at her with beady black eyes. He may have been glaring at her, but Charlotte couldn’t read him. His gruff voice rang out again, “Hey. Lady. You’re the job chick, right? For Lindal?”
“Oh, right... Yeah,” Charlotte said quickly. Lindal was the name of her client. She had been under the impression that Lindal himself would be the one reaching out to her. “I was supposed to be contacted with a place to go to meet up with Lindal.”
“The plan changed.” The beady eyed alien stared at her for a moment, sizing her up. Reluctance sat heavy in his round posture, but he finally said, “Ugh, fine. He knows what he’s doing. You’ve got to come with me now. He sent me to pick you up.”
Charlotte felt alarm flags raising in her mind. None of her previous jobs had broken away from the plan that was agreed on. This one had clearly stated she be contacted virtually with the details on where she should go. However, she didn’t want to miss a job, and she had a reputation to maintain. She channeled the cocky persona she held in the virtual world and said, “No problem. Where are we going?”
“Over here,” he said, pointing to a small hover vehicle parked on the opposite side of the plaza. “Don’t get used to this shit. I’m not a fucking chauffeur.”
Charlotte just nodded and followed him to his vehicle. It was a small, two person transport with a decent sized cargo area in the back. She got in and barely had the time to adjust herself in the large seat before he took off. She gripped the edge of the seat, unaccustomed to the acceleration and shaking of the small craft. She was terrified, but she held it in, putting trust in her new sketchy, round lizard guide.
He quickly maneuvered the hover vehicle through traffic, passing large buildings and shops at an alarming speed. The trip probably didn’t take longer than ten minutes, but by the time they arrived, Charlotte noticed the artificial sky had darkened to night. The lights of Leeto were fully illuminated now, and nearly every building and business had some sort of neon lights or digital displays decorating it.
Charlotte exited the vehicle and took a look around her. They were in front of a nightclub with two tall display panels on each side of the entry. Each panel had an amorphous, gelatinous alien woman that was very well endowed and dancing in sync with each other. Other than the digital women, the place seemed a little run down and gritty. The metal outside had grim and rust on sections of it. Stains of different liquids were splattered along the paths leading to it. The name of the place arched over the doorway and digital panels in a large, holographic sign that read “Parallax.”
This was a first. Usually, she went to offices or personal homes for jobs. She’d never been called to a shady nightclub before. She was seriously starting to doubt her decision to take this job.
“Uhhh...” Charlotte glanced back at her guide, but he was already walking around her towards the front door of the place.
His gruff voice echoed behind him, “C’mon.”

The loud, pulsing music and the rumbling of countless conversations reverberated throughout the club. Two doors were on each side of the said, and she assumed they lead to private rooms. The two aliens from the outside digital panels were on the stage, and Charlotte almost lost her composure at the sight of them.
They were the same two gelatinous alien women from the panels. One was a pale pink and the other a pale green, and they were both transparent. Charlotte couldn’t help but smile in their direction, because they were the most interesting aliens she had ever laid her eyes on. As she approached the table, their joking and laughing died down, and they all looked up at her. The beady eyed alien in the middle grinned at her and said, “You must be the human Charlotte. I’m Lindal, the one you’re about to make very rich.”
When he grinned at her, Charlotte had to fight not to recoil from the sight. His tongue protruded briefly to lick his wide, grinning lips, and he reminded her of a brown spiny toad. She forced a smile back and shot off, “Yep. I’m your girl.”
Her guide moved behind her and motioned for her to get into the booth. She followed his direction and sat down, and he immediately squeezed in beside her, pincering her between himself and another beady eyed, round alien.
Charlotte didn’t like this. She was stuck here without a quick getaway, and her senses were on high alert. It took everything she was made of to keep her cool and confident expression in the face of these aliens staring at her.
“All right,” Lindal grunted out, quelling his laughter and taking on a serious tone, “Let’s go over this.”
As she started explaining the details of her plan, Charlotte felt the tension leave her body. This is where she was most comfortable. She explained the process of breaking into Xen’On Corp’s systems and accessing their credit mine with a malicious script. The entire process would be done remotely by Charlotte, and her trail would be completely hidden. She had researched the patterns of Xen’On Corp’s monthly purchases and explained to her beady eyed audience how she’d be able to disguise the transfers without much risk of notice. Once she set the script in place, Lindal and his crew would see a steady flow begin immediately, and they would have the full amount they desired in a six month period. As a bonus, or as an overachiever, she had created an easy program to where they could monitor the process and make changes themselves.
“I don’t recommend you make many changes though,” she finished.
During the entire time she explained the process, they stayed silent, nodding along. Lindal looked absolutely gleeful, unable to contain his excitement as she explained how easy the process actually was. She also noticed the round alien sitting opposite of her guide looked nervous. He had gotten increasingly more jittery during the explanation and shot his beady eyes toward the door many times.
That bothered Charlotte. What is he worried about?
Lindal clapped his hands together and said, “Great. When can you start this?”
“Well, I can start it tonight,” she said coolly, “but I wouldn’t want to do it from here. I’d rather go somewhere more secure.”
Lindal laughed and banged his fist down on the table, causing the hologram of the girls to flicker briefly, “That sounds good. Let’s drink first to a good deal! Then we will go to our office later.”
The volume levels of her new business partners rose immediately, and they started joking with each other about things she didn’t fully comprehend. Apparently, it was hilarious. A waitress brought suspicious looking, thick beverages to their table, and they started guzzling their new drinks, still cackling amongst themselves.
“Excuse me,” she said, tapping the shoulder of her guide, “Mind if I go to the bar and see if they can have anything I can drink?”
Her guide looked slightly bothered, but he still slid out of the booth and let her out. He immediately slid back in and joined the fun again.
Charlotte let out a breath that felt like she had been holding it for hours as soon as she stepped away from the table. She was mentally screaming inside of her head, but her outside composure remained arrogant and confident.
She looked toward the bar and noticed the bar had cleared out a bit during her conversation with the others. Several people had gotten up and started dancing over by the stage where the two dancing gel aliens were still going at it. Their tentacles seemed to have bioluminescent lights now, and there were bright yellow, blue, and purple lights rotating through their limbs. They twirled around each other, occasionally teasing the other in an erotic spot while they threw their head backs in looks of pleasure. At the bar, only one alien sat there by himself. The loner guy was a humanoid alien with teal colored skin and long, dark blue hair that was tied back behind his head. As Charlotte’s gaze drifted down, checking him out, she noticed that he had a long, cat-like tail flicking back and forth behind the bar stool in rhythm with the music. Ohh… That looks fun.
She walked up to the bar and took a seat a few stools down from the teal alien, giving him plenty of space if he wished to be left alone. The bartender instantly came up to her, smiling at her warmly, before rolling out in a silky accent, “Why, hello there, beautiful. I heard a large human vessel was arriving today. Flattered that you joined us here. Can I get you something?”
Charlotte smiled back at him and asked, “Do you have any drinks from Earth?”
“Yes, we do,” the bartender said motioning behind him to a small rack of dark colored liquid, “Whisky is a popular beverage imported from Earth that we keep in stock. Would that be okay for you?”
She nodded, and he turned around, grabbing a bottle and glass. She watched his fluid movements as he came back to her and poured her a glass. His silky voice rolled out to her, “Please let me know if I can get you anything else.” He left the bottle on the bar in front of her and went back to busy himself with other tasks.
She sipped on the familiar beverage, letting it sit on her tongue briefly before allowing the smooth burn to slide down her throat.
She had discovered it was common for alcoholic beverages from Earth to make their way across the universe at a fast rate than Perseus traveled. Humans were expanding and becoming more and more common around the galaxy. With that, the expansion, trade, diplomacy, and cutthroat politics of humanity spread too. They fit in perfectly with the rest of the known species in the galaxy.
“Mind if I sit next to you?” A deep voice of velvet broke through her thoughts from down the bar.
She looked over at the teal alien to see him staring at her with a slight smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. He held his glass up to her, and she noticed he was drinking whisky too.
“Not at all,” she managed to get out without her pitch rising too much. She smiled at him as he stood up and moved to the stool next to her.
“Whisky,” his voice purred out. “My brother is on a date with a human tonight. I thought it was appropriate to have a drink for him.”
He looked at her and smiled, tapping his glass against her own. “...to wish him good luck and all of that.”
“To wish him luck, huh? I’m sure if he looks anything like you, he won’t need it.”
The teal alien’s smile broke into a grin at her, and he boasted, “I’m much better looking than him, so who knows? He may need it.”
Charlotte looked up at him then, and her eyes met his. She was instantly lost in the void of them, and she nearly gasped. His eyes were solid black… No, not solid. They had different colored lights shimmering throughout them like stars in a night sky. Like looking out the port entry to space. A wicked amusement filled his gaze and sent heat down Charlotte’s body. Suddenly her relief from earlier was forgotten as her body demanded more from these eyes.
She took another sip from her glass, smiling sideways at him. His tail was still flicking back and forth to the music, and he looked pleased with himself. She enjoyed the silent company for a few minutes, and she caught him stealing glances at her several times. Each time, he’d raise an dark blue eyebrow at her, and that wicked amusement would touch his eyes again. The smirk returned to his lips.
Charlotte smirked back.
She was just about to gather the courage to ask if he’d like to meet with her the next night, after she was done with her business here, but hell broke loose.
The music shut off suddenly in the club, leaving it in an eerie silence that echoed confused murmurs and gasps. The two dancers bolted from the stage, exiting through one of the doors to the side of the stage. The crowd in the club parted as a large group of the Leeto Authority were making their way through the crowd with their stun guns raised. An armored alien at the head of the Leeto Authority group raised his gloved hand and pointed to the back corner table, motioning to the rest of the group to make their way in on Lindal and his crew.
Oh God, Charlotte thought wildly. How?
“Okay, human,” the velvet voice next to her said grimly.
Charlotte looked over to the teal alien next to her, and his expression no longer contained that sly amusement. His face was steel, and his eyes were narrowing slightly at her.
