Slowly she realized she wasn't listening to the lecture and her cheeks reddened. She had zoned out again. She tried to focus on the professor who was talking about the psychological and psychophysical effects of interactions in different relationships. She took a deep breath and tried to focus again, while straightening her sweater. She listened to his ongoing explanation and wondered how much more he could say on the subject. It seemed to her he'd made it back to the start and was going over it again, but from a different angle. Half listening, half dreaming about him, she started to suck on the back of her pen. Perhaps it was the warmth or the lack of sleep, but she started to zone out again into fantasies and fought to stay focussed.
She looked around to see if others were having the same problem and chuckled soft as she noticed a sleeping student in the back. Then she caught a guy staring at her, sitting in the same row as her, only a couple of chairs away from her. He was younger than her, which didn't mean much. Most students here were. He smiled as their eyes met, then his gaze turned to look at the professor. He wasn't particularly handsome, but definitely attractive. And there was something about him that made her keep looking at him. When he turned his head again and smiled at her, she started to blush. "What's wrong with me today?" she wondered as she focussed on the lecture again and put her pen down. Well, kind of focussed.
She moved her head a little and looked at the guy again from the corner of her eye, or rather the corner of her glasses. Glasses were her curse. She had been teased with them from very young. The most common being 'four-eyes', of course. That had put a big dent in her self-esteem and self-image. Dating in her teenage years wasn't very easy either, she had always been a bookworm and never liked dressing provocative or seductive in any way. She hung out with the other oddballs and geeks. She preferred their conversations which were never dull over the superficial ones from her fellow female students, until she dropped out. Oh, don't get me wrong, her body was curvy and slender. She was ogled enough to know that she was appealing to the male population. She considered her breasts average. Most girls were more endowed than her. She did like her shapely legs and hips. But having glasses made her less attractive, at least in her opinion and she behaved accordingly, rather withdrawn.
