The morning broke clear and slightly warmer than usual. Morning chores were taken care of, more out of necessity than usual. The offspring were going home from their visit. June was fighting tears. Royce was about a half hour drive from them, so food was fixed so Royce or the ladies wouldn't need to cook when they got home, and the k**s would have treats on the way to keep them occupied. Betty had packed 6 pounds of beef and venison jerky, Clara had prepared a big bag of caramel popcorn, and 3 HUGE peach cobblers. Robbi had made several batches of Cinnamon sugar, and gingerbread cookies. Liz had fixed crunchy cinnamon sugar twist, and a 3 HUGE APRICOT cobblers. Cathy had roasted 2 large chickens, and cut them up for them to eat on the way, if they wanted. Sharon had fixed a large bowl of macaroni salad, Carol an equally large bowl of mashed potato salad, and Mary had made several loaves of bread, and 2 jelly rolls. Doris and Sue had cut up, and were frying 4 large chickens, and a big pan of biscuits each.
Benny had come by this morning on patrol, and dropped off a cake that Lannie had made for them. He gave them all kisses and hugs from Lannie and him, and had given them HIS kisses in person. Wally, the ambulance driver had called to check on Sue, and had promised to come see them all the next time they visited. He had been one of the three drivers available, and had been VERY busy. He had also wanted to apologize for being so formal with Sue, on the night of the accident, but it was because of his concern for her. He and HIS wife were going to come see them all as soon as they could.
All had tearful farewells for their new neighbors. Jeff and Milt had become extremely fond of Billy and Rick. They loved all of them, but the two brothers had touched them in a special way. At the very last minute, Dave drove up and took a large ice chest out of the back of his truck. He also pulled out 2 smaller ones. They were carried in the house. They decided that the best cure for what was "ailin'" them was to do something. Everyone loaded in their vehicles, and headed out to the pond. Billy and Cathy had gone by and picked up jars of vegetables, and a large pot, and took it out and started a big pot of stew. Carol and Sharon had stayed long enough to make 2 pans of Carol's cornbread. They would take large bowls full to Misti and Sam this afternoon They were all hoping Dr. Immelmann would release her and the babies tonight or tomorrow.
Cathy had disappeared up the stairs as soon as they got to the house. She was gone a few minutes, but was back, and her own usual, cheerful self. She gathered the things to make the stew, and went out the door, humming. Billy had the box blade and the scoop on the big tractor, and they heard the whine of Pete's tractor coming across the field. It would be a few minutes for Tod to get here with their tractor. Cathy loaded the things on the trailer, and started the small tractor, to take out to the pond. Sharon would bring the cornbread and the drinks out in Williams pickup. Betty had the 3 k**s in her car and was following Tod. Carol and Sharon would bring their 2 babies when they came out.
They stood by as Billy and Pete moved the gravel and smoothed it in the water. There was more than enough to cover the floor of the pond all the way to the end of the ramp. As soon as that was completed, Tod and Billy started moving the sand. Before long, there was a nice, thick coating up from the water's edge to almost 30 feet back. Dave, David, Rick, William, and James, after unhitching the trailer, moved the pipes and used Dave's arc welder to assemble the pipes for the pavilion. After determining that they would be getting in each other's way, the other men started measuring the boards to make the flooring. In less than 4 hours they had gone from 12 piles of gravel and sand, several pieces of pipe, and a pile of lumber, to a beach and a sk**ded pavilion. READY TO USE. The only things not completed were the 2 walls. They had used the tarps from Texas to make the end covers. Cathy had gone out and stuck a foot in the water and announced that if they didn't mind a little shivering, they could go swimming. Abe and Gail both laughed at her. "TOMORROW!!!" he answered. "Doc said we can have 'em back tomorrow. ALL 4 OF 'EM. He said the babies are doing better than he EVER expected, with their low birth weight. Their breathing, respiration and appetites are all great. They nurse more often than expected, like they were having a race to see who gets the most from Mommy. They have to be nursed every hour and a half, instead of every two hours, and raise Cain if the nurses are late coming to get them. The nurses claim they haven't had so much fun in a while. Between them, Misti and Sam, they don't know who they'll miss the most. The girls have put on weight like they're getting paid. May is up a pound and a half, and Kay is up 18 ounces already."
Doris handed him a bowl of stew with two pieces of cornbread on top. She knew he liked to crumble one into the stew, and eat the other, outright. "Just so you know. If ya DON'T bring 'em to the house, they'll have a bald headed Daddy, 'cause I"LL SCALP YA!!!" Everyone laughed at her threat. They were all thrilled to have 5 new additions to the family.
Everyone sat in the new pavilion, admiring their handiwork. A few more little things, like hooking the electricity, putting in the floodlights, lights in the pavilion, and waterproofing the woodwork, and it would be done. They were still contemplating putting screen wire under the rafters, to keep birds from roosting there, and making a mess. Sparrows and starlings were the worst about that.
Carol had sat down beside Mike to eat. "You bring 'em out and let Doris take care of 'em, but, if I don't get a little cuddle time with 'em, there will be Hell to pay!!! The frame and drive train were out and the metal had been sand-blasted to the bare metal. The few spots of rust had been ground down, and the painting would be started immediately. He showed her the paint, and a sample spot that had been painted. Rick and Doris had had to hold her down to keep her from dancing with glee. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! she had exclaimed. They had hurried home to await the triumphant return of the Tinsley ladies. Ben and Sam had already, on their Green Cards, changed their names to Tinsley. His commendation was going to be presented by the Secretary of the Air Force. He was there on an inspection tour, and had been invited to present several commendations. Mike was being presented with the "Legion of Merit" award, for outstanding service, "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. It would be his highest honor.
All of the k**s had called home to report their safe return to their homes. Annie and Patti were putting things away, and both had started crying, again.
June had called and said that the k**s were "fretful," from the ride home, and she had bathed them and put them to bed. Her and Milt were going to do the same in a little bit. He shushed her, and went over to pick it up. It was an old white oak acorn. It was a pretty good sized one, too. They were generally about the size of a walnut. Give or take. He bent over to pick it up, and another hit him in his side. Something was throwing them at him. He told Lannie to close her window and went around the Blazer to get in, and another whizzed by his head, barely missing him. As he got in, he activated ALL the overheads. THERE IT WAS!!! A large dark head, covered in a beard. Hair that was either dark brown or black covered down over most of the forehead. It disappeared, and he heard crashing in the woods. Lannie looked at hie, her eyes wide from shock. "WHAT WAS THAT THING?" she asked. He was checking his dash cam, but it was too far to the side o get anything more than a few branches moving. "Don't know, Honey. I'll look around a bit more, tomorrow. He wanted to get Pete to go with him. He was one of the best trackers around. Liz, Clara, and Gail had all made appointments for an initial exam, and, at Dr. Fox's urging, had agreed to see Doris and Sue, after Dr. Fox retired.
The next day, Dr. Fox had cut the cast from Sue's arm and leg, and taken X-rays of both. They were healing nicely. They had gone by and looked at Sue's "baby," at Jerry's shop. The frame and drive train were out and the metal had been sand-blasted to the bare metal. The few spots of rust had been ground down, and the painting would be started immediately. He showed her the paint, and a sample spot that had been painted. Rick and Doris had had to hold her down to keep her from dancing with glee. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! she had exclaimed. They were going to paint it
before installing the new windshield, he told her. She was on Cloud 9 on the way home. The only thing away from original was the tire rims. The original "split rims" had been outlawed, and solid rims would replace them. He showed her the new rims. "Cragar Super Sport" mag wheels.
They had hurried home to await the triumphant return of the Tinsley ladies. Ben and Sam had already, on their Green Cards, changed their names to Tinsley. Mike had another week before his retirement ceremony. He was hoping that Misti would be strong enough, and the weather agreeable, for her to attend. His commendation was going to be presented by the Secretary of the Air Force. He was there on an inspection tour, and had been invited to present several commendations. Mike was being presented with the "Legion of Merit" award, for outstanding service, "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. It would be his highest honor.
All of the k**s had called home to report their safe return to their homes. Annie and Patti were putting things away, and both had started crying, again.
June had called and said that the k**s were "fretful," from the ride home, and she had bathed them and put them to bed. Her and Milt were going to do the same in a little bit. He was wanting to play "poke her" with her, before they went to sleep. She was looking forward to a little "hide the weinie" herself.
Sue had convinced Doris to allow Rick to stay the night with her. They had both promised to "be good." Doris, after hearing Dr. Fox's prognosis, had agreed. "Just NO WAR WHOOPS!!!" she told them. "You might wake the babies!!!"
He and Doris had helped Sue into the shower, stripped her shorts and tank top off her, and bathed her thoroughly, and dried her carefully. Doris had teased them about bundling Rick, and had been kissed by both. She turned out the lights, and closed the door, leaving them together. Sue was laying on her left side, her arm out in front of her, and Rick cuddled up to her butt, his arm over her. She had asked Doris to braid her hair after her bath, in a long pigtail. It was laying in front of her. She had scooted back to increase the pressure between them and had closed her eyes, enjoying the feel of him between the cheeks of her ass. They drifted off to sleep, keeping their promise to Doris.
Down the road, things weren't so peaceful. Bennie and Lannie were returning from her parents house, and were just down from where Sue had had her wreck. SOMETHING was nagging at his mind. He couldn't put his finger on it, but, he couldn't put it in its place. Lannie was curious, but respected her husband's intuition. He was the sort of man that took his job VERY seriously. He was charged with protecting his neighbors at all costs. The Sheriff was retiring after 46 years in Law Enforcement with different agencies, and had been trying to get Bennie to run to replace him. The other Deputies had added their encouragement, and he was seriously considering the run. He was well thought of in the county, and it shouldn't be a problem. It was quite a step for a 28 year old Deputy, with 7 years experience, to have such support. Nothing to take lightly. All 4 of the County Commissioners had promised their support as well.
He pulled slowly to the place where Sue had gone into the ditch. The tire marks were still plainly visible, due to the lack of rain or wind. He left the motor running, and climbed out to look at the scene, again. He used the light from the headlamps to look at the ground, using his Kell Light when h it was needed. He had his personal weapon, a .44 magnum Smith and Wesson, unsnapped, and available. He had a creepy feeling of being watched. The closer to the ditch he got, the stronger the feeling became. He also felt slightly nauseous. He had been feeling great a minute ago. Something moved in the brush across the ditch. It was just a faint rustling sound, but was STILL out of place. There was absolutely NO wind to move anything. The air was just a bit heavy, hinting that they might get some rain, finally. He told Lannie to pull the switch on the right side spotlight, to give him a better light. When it came on, he saw a slight gleam for just a second, that was gone as soon as he saw it. It was too high to be a deer or a cow's eye shine. It was at least 7, maybe closer to 8 feet off the ground. It might be a 'coon or a possum, but it didn't look right. He had hunted both all his life, and it didn't match up.
Suddenly he saw, from the corner of his eye, something coming through the air to strike the door under Lannie's open window. He heard her cry out in surprise. He shushed her, and went over to pick it up. It was an old white oak acorn. It was a pretty good sized one, too. They were generally about the size of a walnut. Give or take. He bent over to pick it up, and another hit him in his side. Something was throwing them at him. He told Lannie to close her window and went around the Blazer to get in, and another whizzed by his head, barely missing him. As he got in, he activated ALL the overheads. THERE IT WAS!!! A large dark head, covered in a beard. Hair that was either dark brown or black covered down over most of the forehead. It disappeared, and he heard crashing in the woods. Lannie looked at hie, her eyes wide from shock. "WHAT WAS THAT THING?" she asked. He was checking his dash cam, but it was too far to the side o get anything more than a few branches moving. "Don't know, Honey. I'll look around a bit more, tomorrow. He wanted to get Pete to go with him. He was one of the best trackers around. Their new neighbor, Tod Breen had a reputation as a good tracker, too. That hole buch had reputations as woodsmen. Even the women were supposed to be better than most men. Too bad Sue was injured. He knew she was something else. He heard a bang and Lannie screamed. A large dirt clod ad hit the window behind her.
He had a GENUINE mystery hitting him squarely between the eyes. His guts were jumping.
