‘Leigh, I’m going to take a shower while the kids are napping, do you need anything? Are you doing okay?’ Melanie peered at her sister in concern. The further along Leigh got in her pregnancy, the more anxious she became.

‘Is mommy okay?’ Jason stopped short in the doorway of the living room when he saw Marine sitting on the couch next to Leigh with a look of concern on her face. Jason swallowed and met Leigh’s eyes and growled when he saw she was trying not to laugh.

Leigh groaned and laughed. ‘Here, turn around and I’ll work on your back a little,’ he offered. ‘How long has your back been spasming?’ Steve wanted to know.

‘I’ll call Paul,’ Jason said and grabbed the phone.
‘Why? He’s working, I’m fine,’ Leigh protested.
‘Leigh, you’re describing the early stages of labor,’ Jason said gently while he waited to be connected to Paul’s work station.
‘I feel …’ Leigh stopped protesting and sat back on the couch as another cramp passed through her.
‘Wonderful, Paul’s in a meeting,’ Jason grumbled. ‘Put me through to his voice mail,’ he told the secretary. ‘Paul, it’s Jason, I’m taking Leigh to Siani Hospital, when you get this message, if you haven’t heard anything else, come straight there,’ Jason said before hanging up. ‘Dad, Mel’s napping, will you stay here? Marine’s eating an apple, the boys and Jessi are napping as well,’ Jason said calmly. Steve nodded and helped Leigh off the couch.

‘Leigh!’ Paul exclaimed when the nurse showed him into the delivery room. Jason patted his sister in law’s hand and backed away when Paul practically rushed the bed.
‘I’m okay,’ Leigh said softly.
‘And yes, the baby is coming. I’m dilated four centimeters,’ she added.
‘Do you want me to stay or go?’ Jason asked quietly. Leigh took a deep breath as a contraction rolled through her.
‘Stay,’ Paul answered, a look of panic on his face. Jason chuckled.
‘Paul, you’ll be fine,’ Jason said, as Paul sat in the chair that Jason just vacated.
‘How badly is this going to hurt?’ Leigh asked when the discomfort of the contraction passed.
‘I’m not the one to ask kiddo, but Mel delivered two without any medication at all, there wasn’t time,’ Jason answered.
‘Is it bad now?’ Paul asked Leigh, reached for her hand.
‘It hurts, but it’s pretty manageable,’ Leigh answered.
‘I need to call home and check on Mel and the kids,’ Jason said. Paul nodded and watched his brother in law walk out of the room.
‘Mel, what are you doing here?’ Leigh asked a few hours later when Melanie walked into the room.
‘Julie gave me a ride, I had to see my only sister before the baby came,’ Melanie answered with a smile.
‘I’m ready to strangle Paul,’ Leigh admitted after Paul had left the room to get a cup of ice water for her to drink.
‘What is he doing?’ Melanie wanted to know.
‘Every time I have a contraction, he just gets so jumpy and touchy … during the last one, he was stroking my arm, and my leg and my abdomen. I wanted to grab him by the balls and squeeze as hard as I could,’ Leigh grumbled. Melanie laughed and hugged her sister gently.
‘How are you doing?’ Melanie asked, sitting down next to the bed.
‘It hurts. I didn’t know it would hurt this badly,’ Leigh admitted. Both girls looked up when Paul walked back into the room with the cup of water and as he closed the door behind him, another contraction gripped Leigh and she grabbed Melanie’s arm as a loud cry of pain escaped her. Melanie merely said, ‘Breathe.’ as Leigh squeezed her hand. Paul watched helplessly until the contraction ended and Leigh let go of Melanie’s hand.
‘Are you sure you don’t want an epidural?’ Paul asked, setting the cup of water on the night stand.
‘If Mel can do this twice without one, I can too,’ Leigh panted. Melanie took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
‘Don’t use me as a reason not to have pain medication Leigh. I know how badly it hurts,’ Melanie said.
‘I don’t want an epidural. The morphine is taking the edge off,’ Leigh told them. None of them said anything as a nurse walked into the room.
‘I’m just going to check your progress now,’ the nurse said as she pulled on her medical gloves. Paul waited impatiently while Melanie hid a smile behind her hand before she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. ‘You’re making wonderful progress. You’re at nine centimeters. You’ll be pushing very soon,’ the nurse announced. ‘I’ll go inform your doctor,’ she added.
‘You’re doing great Leigh, just great,’ Paul said, relieved when she loosened the grip on his hand.
‘Oh shut up Paul! In fact, why don’t you just get out!’ Leigh shouted, pulling her hand away. Paul couldn’t hide the hurt in his eyes.
‘She doesn’t mean it!’ Melanie exclaimed. ‘Leigh, I know it hurts, just calm down sweetie and breathe. You’re almost there,’ she said to her sister. ‘Paul, just hold her hand and wipe her forehead,’ Melanie told the younger man. Paul nodded and slid his hand back into Leigh’s.

‘Well?’ Jason asked when Melanie walked into the house later that night and sank onto the couch.
‘To Paul’s dismay, they had a little girl,’ Melanie answered, remembering the look on her brother in law’s face when the doctor had told them the sex of the baby.
‘What did Paul say?’ Jason wanted to know.
‘That they’d have to keep trying. I thought Leigh was going to rip his balls off right then and there,’ Melanie said with a chuckle. Jason laughed and shook his head.
‘They’ll come around,’ he said with a grin.
‘They named her after mom, named the baby Sue Ellen,’ Melanie added.
‘And continued the Gone with the Wind theme,’ Jason said with a chuckle.
‘If Leigh is hell bent on continuing that theme, Paul may get a hell of a shock when they do have a boy, she may try and name him Ashley,’ Melanie giggled. Jason covered his face with his hands and laughed.
‘You know what this means don’t you?’ Jason asked after a minute.
‘I get to be the one to spoil the baby and send her home,’ Melanie said with a devilish grin.
‘And none of the midnight feeds and sore breasts,’ she added.
‘Which means more play time for me,’ Jason said with a grin before he lowered his lips to hers, slid his hands up under her shirt to tweak a pointed nipple. Melanie moaned and gasped when Jason pulled her into his arms and carried her into the bedroom.
