It's Greek To Me

With the most sincere apologies to The Professor
From the first Ovid story, Jim had become a fan. It wasn't like him to be
that involved, but he loved the writing, and the cleverness of the stories. He
enjoyed reading CD stories, and had refined his taste to enjoy the R ratings as
opposed to the X and XXX versions. He had even written a couple of notes
to The Professor praising his work, and had written reviews on at least four
of the stories. He had used the Ovid theme to gratify himself while traveling.
Yep, he was a fanatic.
Much of the appeal of the stories was tied to the fact that Jim would need the
magic of the gods to satisfy his desire to not just crossdress, but to actually
look the way he wanted to look. At fifty, and at 6'3" he didn't fall into a
"cute" look, and despite working out, at fifty, well?gravity just sort of takes
over. Being married to a strict fundamentalist didn't add to his opportunities
either. Well, thank god for fictionmania.tv. His laptop was now his one
source of crossdressing solace. He was an old time road warrior, and while
he didn't mind this constant traveling, he no longer spent much time in bars
and searching for trouble, so an occasional mental trip to Ovid was always
welcome.
Normally, Jim's travels took him to only the major cities. He was quite at
home in New York, LA, D.C., Miami, and his home in Chicago. However,
February of this year he had to visit Omaha. While Omaha is a nice enough
town, it isn't New York, and sure doesn't compare to Miami in February.
Oh well, just some more of the glamour of travel he thought as he packed his
carry on for a two day one night trip.
The early United flight from Chicago was crowded with white guys in suits.
The coffee was passable, and Jim passed on the boxed breakfast, empty
calories, he thought. Maybe skipping breakfast would help keep his weight
down. He hustled to his rental car, and then sped off to the daylong meeting.
He normally didn't stay downtown in a town like Omaha overnight, but these
meetings were complicated, and he had to stay two days. He also didn't
typically stay downtown in these smaller cities, but this was a hectic week
there for some reason, and he was booked at the Red Lion downtown. He
did the reverse commute (by Omaha standards) back into town to find the
hotel. A brief lapse in concentration and a missed turn took him out of the
city and across the river into Iowa. Damn, he thought, this is going to cost
me at least a half-hour. He wasn't in any particular hurry, but he wanted to
work out in the hotel gym (assuming they even had a gym!), and knew that
six o'clock would be the busiest time for hotel work out facilities.
Jim cruised into the boonies of Iowa looking for a place to get off of the
interstate and make a U-turn. He went at least six miles without finding an
exit that seemed to have a corresponding entrance ramp to make his way back
west. He saw the billboard for the gambling casino when he realized he
wasn't heading east, but south. Damn, now I am lost he thought. He steered
the car onto the off ramp, and looked for a gas station to get directions.
Unfortunately, there wasn't one, but he soon found himself pulling into the
entranceway for the gambling casino.
"What the hell," he thought, "I ought to try this." Jim wasn't much of a
gambler, and he had never been on one of these riverboat gambling casinos.
He gave the rental car to the valet, and headed into the casino. Two hours
later Jim reminded himself why he wasn't a gambler. He was a hundred
dollars poorer, reeked of cigarette smoke, and had two watered down draft
beers. Now he just wanted to get to the hotel, eat dinner, and get to sleep,
working out had been eliminated from today's schedule.
He got directions back to Omaha from the valet, and aimed the car back
towards the highway. He approached the second intersection, and for some
reason slowed despite having the right of way. Sure enough, his instincts
were right, a couple of kids blew right through the stop sign at about sixty
miles an hour. He was sure they would have nailed him had he not slowed.
He stopped the car in the intersection and watched them disappear into the
night. Jim started up again and as he slowly accelerated, he heard the faint
sound of a police siren grow in intensity. He smiled, and hoped that the cop
would catch the kids. He wasn't being vindictive, he just didn't want them to
get killed, or worse kill some innocent motorist. His smile faded as he saw
the police car make a quick left at the stop sign and chase him down.
Jim pulled onto the shoulder of the country lane and exited the car. He didn't
notice how quickly the policeman was at his side. What he did notice was the
size of the man, and how precise he was in his dress and demeanor. He
immediately asked for Jim's license and registration. Jim produced his
license, and explained that this was a rental car. He retrieved the rental
papers, and then asked why the officer had pulled him over. Jim was
incredulous that the cop thought it was him who was speeding. He told the
cop quietly and politely that the speeding car had almost hit him. It didn't
turn, but kept going straight after it went through the stop sign.
The officer nodded. He seemed to believe Jim. He then asked him if he had
been drinking. Jim replied yes. He stated that he had been at the riverboat,
but he only had two beers. The cop nodded again, and appeared to believe
Jim. Then he said, "Sir, I hate to do this, but you will have to come with me
into town to take a Breathalyzer test."
Jim couldn't believe his ears. He started to protest but the officer's stance
took on an aggressive posture. Jim thought better of it, and merely asked
about the rental car. The officer said he would have it picked up, and brought
into town immediately. He escorted Jim to the back seat of the squad car,
and let him in. Jim sat back there in silence as they drove the few miles into
town.
Jim was lost in his thoughts and never even looked out the window. He
didn't realize how long or short the ride was. He only knew that he should
be fine. He thanked himself for having a good lunch, and for showing the
temperance, he did at the casino. The officer got out of the car, and let Jim
out as well. The officer politely directed him towards the sign marked
"Police". They entered, and while Jim was unfamiliar with small town police
stations, this looked just like it he envisioned on to look. The officer
motioned Jim to take a seat on the bench. He did, and the officer said that
someone would be with him shortly.
Moments later a very tall man with white hair and piercing eyes strode into
the police station. He was impeccably dressed, and looked very much in
charge. He stopped in front of Jim, and said, "were you drinking?" Jim
answered honestly, "sir I had exactly two beers in two hours. The last one
was at least an hour ago. I am sure that I am not impaired in any way." The
man smiled down at Jim, and silently motioned him to walk with him into an
office at the end of the hallway. The office was not overly decorated, but had
beautiful, and noticeably expensive furnishings, even to Jim's untrained eye.
The man motioned Jim to have a seat.
The distinguished gentleman sat down behind his desk, and looked right into
Jim's eyes. He wasted no time and said, "So you like the Ovid stories do
you?" Jim's jaw dropped. My god, this guy fits the description of the judge
in the stories. He was speechless. He thought of the cop, it was Mercury.
This couldn't happen. The Judge interrupted his thoughts as he spoke again,
"Jim we monitor the readership of those stories. We usually don't do
anything other than note the readers, but every once in awhile we have the
opportunity to do something for a loyal reader like you. Now, you need to
know that this is not Ovid. The town you are in is Pindar. The officer that
pulled you over was not named Mercer, but Herman. I think you will like
living here, but you must forget what you know about Ovid. This is Pindar.
That said, I am sure you know that we are always looking for new
inhabitants. None of us like the idea of having shadows, but they do serve
their purpose. I am going to give you a wonderful opportunity. We have a
need here for a new history teacher in the high school. You have always
harbored a desire to teach, and to well?be someone else. I am offering you
that opportunity. I am also offering you the chance to go back to your old life
if, after one month here in Pindar, you decide you would rather be back in
your old existence. What do you say?"
Jim couldn't say anything. His brain was totally overloaded. He just nodded
dumbly. At that moment the gentleman said something in a language that Jim
didn't understand, and his ears rang with a sound that caused him to black
out. Moments later he awoke to the sound of the alarm clock. What a great
dream he thought. Too bad I woke up before I found out what that guy
changed me into. He started to move across the bed to turn off the alarm
clock, when he realized he wasn't coming out of a dream! Oh my God! He
sat up in the bed and looked down at the naked body he now inhabited. He
was a woman. This was getting too weird. This couldn't be happening. A
voice from the next room called out, "will you shut off that damn alarm
clock, It is really annoying!"
Who was that? Jim stood up, and felt a need to head to the bathroom. He, or
rather she, padded into the bath, and sat on the toilet. She knew enough
about this situation from reading that by letting her mind get into automatic
pilot she would be able to get dressed and start to know what was going on in
"her" life. She slipped into that state, and within 45 minutes she was
showered and dressed. She was wearing a white blouse; the underwear was
plain white, both bra and panties. She also wore a tan skirt that went to just
above her knees, nude pantyhose, and tan two-inch heels. She wore
minimum make up on a face that appeared to be about twenty-four years old.
Jim looked at him/herself in the mirror, and was pleased to see this young
woman who appeared to be about 5'7", 120 pounds, she had a nice build,
not stunning but 34-22-34. Athletic was the word that came to mind. Her
hair was light brown and it came to just below the shoulder, and eerily
enough her eyes looked just like his. Except this body had no need for
contact lenses. Jim looked around, added earrings (hmm no pierced ears he
noted), and a watch. He picked up his/her purse, and quickly looked inside.
There was the driver's license: Jamie Lynne Williams, age 24, the height and
weight matched his estimate. It further noted she lived at 674 19th Street,
Apartment C. Her birthday was March 25th, and her license was good for
another two years. She stood staring at the license when she heard the voice
again, "Jamie we'll be late if you don't hurry up!" Jamie noted with some
relief that it was female. She headed out of her bedroom, and into the living
room. There stood another young woman. She was about 5'4", slightly
overweight, with short brown hair, and a huge smile. Jamie was in control
enough to note she wasn't a "shade". Her apparent roommate stared at Jamie
with a look of disbelief. Jamie broke the silence by saying, "I had a very
interesting night. What do you know about Pindar?"
The young woman, was instantly moving towards Jamie, and began hugging
Jamie. "I can't believe it. Finally, someone to talk to about this!" Jamie
hugged her back, and then stepped back, I know a little about this place, but I
need to know your name first!" She said and smiled. The young woman
said my name is Betty, Betty Donaldson. We both teach at the high school,
come on, I'll drive today and start to fill you in on what's up.
Jamie walked to the car with a broad smile on her face. She loved her new
body; she loved the feel of the clothes she was wearing. She thrilled to the
sound of her heels clicking on the sidewalk. Betty directed her to a three year
old Ford Mustang. She told Jamie that her car was parked behind the
Mustang, Jamie looked and saw a four year old Chevy Lumina. She didn't
care about the car; she was too excited being Jamie.
The ride to school took fifteen minutes. Jamie learned that she was an
American history teacher in her second year of teaching at the high school.
She coached the freshmen girls' basketball team. She wasn't dating anyone,
and her best friend from college--the local one here, was Betty. Jamie
learned that Betty taught chemistry, and she had been Betty for four months.
Jamie soaked all this in, but didn't have time to ask any questions. They
pulled into the faculty parking lot at the school, and immediately headed up to
their respective classrooms.
Jamie enjoyed the classes immensely she had loved history as Jim, and true
to the old guy's word (who was he? She would need to do some library
work.), she did harbor a desire to be a teacher. As long as she could keep
her Jim side of her brain shut down she found she could remember the names
of her students as well as the names of the faculty. Jamie managed to get
through the morning with only a few minor problems with students, she
noted that there were about 60% shadows in her morning classes.
She met Betty at lunch, but unfortunately they were not able to talk because
they sat with three other faculty members, one female shade about their age
who taught French, and two males that were in their late thirties, one taught
geometry and the other was the Athletic Director. Neither of the men were
shades and neither appeared to have any idea that there was anything unusual
about Pindar. Jamie wanted to meet Betty right after school, but "she" knew
she had basketball practice immediately following her last class. Betty had a
science club meeting after school, so the girls agreed to meet at five p.m. in
the parking lot.
Afternoon classes started out easy enough. February in American history
meant finishing up the reconstruction era in the south and to begin learning
about the industrial revolution and the robber barons. The last classes of the
afternoon started fine until a pair of twins, Mary Jane and Mary Sue Robbins
got into a real fist fight fifteen minutes into class. Jamie ran to the back of the
room and separated them, and put them in opposite corners of the room. She
told them she would deal with them after class.
The twins distracted Jamie for most of the rest of the class. They glared at
each other, and even started to move towards one another just before class
ended. Jamie slipped into Jim mode and casually wandered down between
an aisle of desks and stood in the back of the classroom to use her physical
presence to keep them apart. Mercifully, the bell rang and 27 of the 29
freshmen bolted for the door. Jamie immediately and in her sternest voice
(she loved her new voice, but didn't think it too stern!) told the girls to sit in
two of the desks in the front row.
"What do you to think you are doing? Fighting in my classroom, this could
cause both of you to be suspended. How would you both like to be kicked
off the basketball team? How would you like to spend then next month in
detention?" Jamie paused, and waited for one of them to respond.
Mary Sue spoke up, "what is this bull?" I am not a girl. I am a guy. This
"twin" and he said it with dripping sarcasm isn't a twin at all, but my ex-best
friend. I don't know what happened here, but I am getting out!"
Mary Ann just looked at Jamie with a puzzled expression. She was Mary
Sue's twin, and for all she knew, she had always been Mary Sue's twin.
Jamie knew instinctively that these girls hadn't been these girls long. She
sent Mary Ann to basketball practice, and told her the girls were to begin with
stretching exercises, and she would be there shortly.
Once Mary Ann left the room, she turned to Mary Sue. She soon discovered
that they were two boys who were driving the car that almost hit Jamie (she
was already thinking of herself as Jamie) last night. Evidently, they had been
caught after all. Mary Sue ranted that they had been arrested and spent the
night in jail, without being allowed to make a telephone call or anything.
When they woke up this morning, they woke up in a strange house, and had
been turned into teenage girls. Mary Sue was irate, but Mary Ann had no
recollection of what had happened. Jamie told Mary Sue a little bit about
what had happened to her, but basically said she would need some time to
sort this out on her own. She advised Mary Sue to go to basketball practice,
and to let herself relax and "go with the flow". Her body would and
automatic reflexes would help her through the rest of the day.
Mary Sue didn't like it but she went. She pouted through twenty minutes of
practice; finally, Jamie had her run laps until she collapsed totally exhausted.
Jamie thought keeping her tired would be a good idea. She needed to see
someone about Mary Sue as soon as she could.
Practice was totally enjoyable. Jamie found herself becoming instantly
attached to these girls. All of who seemed quite content with who they were
and why they were there. Finally, after running the girls through the dreaded
"suicides". She sent them to the shower. She went over to Mary Sue and
said, "go home see what happens tonight. She if you can talk to your mom
or dad, if not see me in the morning before class. Then I will see if I can't
help you. One last thing, if you don't leave your sister alone, you will be
sorry." Mary Sue sullenly looked at her--looked at her like she was an old
lady teacher. She didn't respond. She just turned and walked out of the
gym.
Jamie thought of changing out of her sweats, but it was already five o'clock.
She didn't want to keep Betty waiting. She headed out to the parking lot to
watch the last of the girls get their rides home. She felt bad she didn't see
Mr. or Mrs. Robbins. She would have liked to have found out if either of
them could help Mary Sue through her first day or just as importantly her first
night.
Jamie walked to the parking lot and saw that Betty was just getting into the
car. Their ride was filled with talk of school, and Jamie asked Betty if she
had the Robbins twins in any of her classes. Betty said no, but she had heard
talk in the faculty lounge about them today. It seems they were shadows until
today. Betty suggested that they go out for a drink, but Jamie asked if she
could go back to the apartment. She was mentally exhausted from her first
day. Betty agreed, and after picking up some Chinese food, they headed to
the apartment.
Jamie found out that Betty was formally a New York fashion model. She
had anorexia, she had a terrible heroin habit, and she had come to Iowa for a
photo shoot a year ago. At first, she resented this new and by her old
standard imperfect body. However, she had come to realize that she was
much happier, and so at ease with herself now that she didn't have to worry
about every calorie, and be on her cell phone every minute. In fact, she had
fallen in love with a local Pindarian. She was sure she was getting an
engagement ring on Valentine's day. Betty said he was a foreman at the
Armenian Electronics company. She laughed between bites of Shrimp Egg
Foo Young, and said, " Eddy is such a great guy, and I would never have
looked at him a year ago. I now thank the Judge for this more than you can
imagine. By the way, Eddy and I will be going to the Pantry tomorrow
night, Wednesday's we are in dart league. Please come."
Jamie said she needed to check her schedule--so she closed her eyes and went
into autopilot. She realized that she had a basketball game tomorrow. The
freshman game was at 3:30, she said that she would try to come after the
game.
Wednesday went as routinely as one could expect. Jamie found herself
knowing more and more about Jamie, yet she still kept an awareness of Jim.
She anticipated her last class with some trepidation. She hoped that Mary
Sue had gotten some help at home, but as she entered her classroom Jamie
knew nothing good had happened.
Mary Sue looked terrible. She was dressed as masculine as possible. She
was scowling, and no one was walking anywhere near her. Jamie made sure
to keep Mary Sue occupied during class, and at the final bell asked her to stay
after class.
Mary Sue sullenly sat in the back of the room. Jamie walked back and sat on
the desk in front of her. She said, "Mary Sue did you talk to your parents
last night?"
"Miss Williams, I don't have parents. Mary Ann and I live with my brother,
and he is clueless. He doesn't know anything!" And then she began to cry.
Jamie got off the desk and went to Mary Sue. She hugged her, and said,
"don't worry it's not that bad. We can work through this. You'll be fine."
The two females stood embracing for a while, finally Jamie stepped back and
said, "you better get down to the locker room and get ready for the game. I
need my point guard."
The Pindar teams won all three games. The freshmen team played a full court
man to man, or rather woman to woman, pressure defense that most teams
couldn't handle at this level. Jamie was proud of the girls. She could see
that even when she was a shadow the girls had liked and respected her. Her
new depth added to their affection for her. She surmised that it didn't hurt
that she played all the girls on a regular basis. After the game, Jamie told
Mary Ann that she wanted to meet her brother. She needed to talk to him
about Mary Sue.
Mary Ann introduced Jamie to Kevin Robbins, her older brother. He took
Jamie's hand and looked right into her eyes. Jamie almost gasped. He was
very handsome. He was no more than 25 years old, at least 6'4', very trim,
eye had the most beautiful brown eyes she had ever seen, and jet black hair.
Jamie felt weak in the knees. She felt something she had never felt before.
She recovered, and said, "Kevin, can we go up to the top of the stands, I
would like to talk to you about the twins, in private." Kevin nodded, and up
they went.
She went right to the crux of the matter. She asked if he had noticed anything
different about the girls. He said that Mary Sue was acting weird lately, but
they each took turns at that. He explained that their parents had been killed in
a car crash last October, and he moved back to the family home to be
guardian of the twins three months ago. He shared that he really hadn't spent
much time with the girls--now or even growing up. They were eleven years
younger than he was, and that age difference was so great that they grew up
as different families. Finally, he asked why Jamie was concerned about the
twins. She knew she couldn't tell him that the girls were shadows, and are
now former boys. So, she said that since they are in the midst of puberty
they would need some assistance from a female. She asked about an Aunt or
a grandmother. He said no relative lived in town. He asked her if she could
be of assistance. Jamie said she would do what she could, but she would
also check with the guidance department.
Kevin got up, and thanked Jamie for her concern. He also said he would try
and keep a better eye on the girls. He also asked if he could call her at school
if he noticed anything out of the ordinary. Jamie said that would be great.
They shook hands and Jamie found herself staring at him with a stupid grin
on her face. She said thanks again, and awkwardly turned and headed down
the stairs to the gym floor. She couldn't believe it, though she had never
been a schoolgirl, that was exactly how she acted in front of this guy. Good
grief she thought, I better work on that part of my life.
Jamie thought about heading over to the Pantry but she really needed to go
over her lesson plan. Plus, this was just her second day in this body and she
hadn't had a chance to really explore her "surroundings". So, she made sure
all the girls got picked by their parents, and drove to the apartment. As she
entered, she realized that this was the first time she had been alone as Jamie.
She went into her bathroom and decided to take a bath. She started the water,
and then rummaged around until she found some scented bath gel. She went
back to her room, and undressed. She padded back into the bathroom, and
looked at her naked reflection in the full-length mirror on the back of the
door. She smiled. She fervently thanked whoever it was that changed her.
She had to find out who that was. She went into the living room and looked
on the bookshelf. Sure enough, Betty or she, had Mythology, by Edith
Hamilton on the shelf. She took it with her to the bath, and started looking
through it. She found Pindar, the Greek poet, and police Officer Herman, it
was Hermes. This wasn't a Roman world, but Greek. That meant that the
"old gentleman" must be Zeus. This was so wonderful. She looked like she
had wanted to look since she was old enough to know that she wanted to be a
Jamie and not a Jim.
She lingered in the bath reading the book. Finally, she grabbed a pink razor,
and shaved her legs and underarms in the warm scented water. After at least
45 minutes of soaking, shaving, and a satisfying exploration of her new
body, she got out of the tub and toweled off. She found a wonderful floor
length terry cloth robe. She donned a very unsexy pair of Ally Macbeal
flannel pajamas, sweat sox and the robe. She then ambled into the living
room and turned on the television. She was totally absorbed in a women's
basketball game when the front door opened. Betty entered laughing
followed closely by Eddy. Jamie smiled when she saw them. Eddy was
about 5'9" tall he too was a little over weight, but he looked like he never
stopped smiling. He asked, "Hey, Jamie, how'd the girls do tonight?"
Jamie knew from the sound of his voice that he really cared.
"Eddy, we were awesome. You and Betty should come to the game on
Saturday after next. It's at home and we're playing Council Bluffs Central.
You know they are always a good test for us, especially with the state
tournament starting in two weeks. How did you guys do in darts?"
Eddy reached over and grabbed Betty around the waist and hugged tightly to
him, "You know that Betty can barely hit the wall! We are so far in last place
that we will buy drinks forever!" Betty spun around and kissed Eddy, and
then laughing said, "Eddy how can you say that! I've carried you all
season!" She broke away from his hug, and went into the kitchen to get two
more beers. She called to Jamie and asked if she could bring her one as well.
Jamie said no, and added she was going to bed. She winked at Eddy, and he
winked back and mouthed a thank you to her. Before Jamie could fall asleep,
she could hear giggling and gasps coming from the living room. She smiled
as she thought of how happy Betty and Eddy were.
Jamie drove to school the next day; Betty was smiling but was very tired.
Jamie asked her if she got any sleep. She said yes, and then added she
couldn't believe how much different her life was now, and how much more
she liked it now. Betty asked how Jamie was doing. Jamie replied that she
was fine, but worried about Mary Sue Robbins. Jamie asked her about the
freshman guidance counselor, was she any good? Betty told her that she was
a shadow, and about 55 years old, not exactly the right person in whom to
confide her new persona. Jamie agreed, sighed, and knew that she would
have to step up to the challenge.
Thus began the daily talks. Jamie met with Mary Sue every day after class.
She explained who she was; she listened to Mary Sue. Mary Sue vented,
wept, yelled, and laughed. After a week, she actually wore a skirt to school.
Jamie was so happy. She felt that Mary Sue was finally coming to grips with
the reality of who she was. That afternoon, ten days after they started, Mary
Sue thanked Jamie. She asked that they continue, but she said she had
stopped crying in bed every night.
Jamie had gotten into a routine: school, talk to Mary Sue, coach, go home,
listen to Betty and Eddy on the couch in the living room, and start over the
next day. The last game of the season for the freshmen girls was the
Saturday game with Central. Eddy and Betty came to the game, as did Kevin
Robbins. She wasn't sure but she thought she saw the Judge in the upper
region of the stands. Jamie was never so aware of her appearance. She wore
black slacks with a gray silk blouse, black flats with knee high nylons, she
didn't like knee-highs, but she opted for their comfort. A single strand of
pearls accented the blouse, Jamie knew she was opting for the Pat Richards,
but thought there were worse folks to emulate.
The game was wonderful. Neither team ever had more than a three-point
lead all through the game. There were only fifteen seconds left when Central
went up by two. Jamie called time out, and brought the team together at the
bench. She diagrammed a play that called for the ball to go to their center.
Although she was a shadow, she was a good player, and a steady scorer.
The team joined hands and cheered. Jamie sat back on the bench and
watched the team put the ball in play. The play she diagrammed fell apart in a
matter of seconds. Central anticipated her move, and doubled down on
Pindar's center. Mary Ann Robbins circled the key for a few seconds, and
sensing a trap threw the ball to her sister Mary Sue with six seconds on the
clock. Mary Sue made a quick move to the basket, and with two seconds left
shot the ball?.nothing but net! The girls had won. They were cheering and
pounding on Mary Sue's back. Jamie got them to stop cheering long enough
to line up and congratulate the Central girls. Jamie shook hands with the
male coach of Central who made a comment about wait until next year.
Once the girls got back into the locker room, Jamie congratulated them on
calmly working the ball into Mary Sue, and not panicking, and she told them
she enjoyed having them this year. The girls cheered again, they then
showered, and headed back up to watch the rest of the games. Mary Sue was
the last to leave the locker room, and she went up to Jamie, and asked if they
could talk. Mary Sue told Jamie that she had been asked to go out on a date.
It was for the Valentine's dance next Saturday. She didn't know what to do.
Jamie put her arm around the confused fourteen-year-old, and asked who
was the young man. Mary Sue said it was Jack Cassin, he was a freshman
also. Jamie knew him to be a very nice young man. She said that absolutely
she should go to the dance. She was making great progress in dealing with
who she was, and this was the next logical step.
Mary Sue said ok, and then said she didn't know what to wear. She and her
sister had very different tastes in clothes. Mary Ann was more mod in her
approach, and Mary Sue was still very conservative. Jamie said she would
help. They made an appointment to shopping Sunday, Jamie said she would
meet her at the department store, Aphros' downtown. Jamie knew she
wouldn't be of much help, but she was sure she could get Betty to come
along, she'd know what to do.
The two headed up into the gym. The sophomore girls were losing by eight
points. Jamie went up to sit with Betty and Eddy. They were talking to
Kevin Robbins. Sitting behind them was the Zeus.. He was talking to
someone Jamie didn't know. Jamie sat down, and Eddy started to introduce
Kevin, he interrupted Eddy, and said that they had already met. Kevin then
introduced Jamie to his boss, Arthur Aremian. He smiled, and shook her
hand. He commented on the poise and skill that the girls exhibited, especially
for being only fourteen-years-old. Then Zeus motioned for her to move up
and talk to him. Jamie moved up two benches, and sat next to the man. He
quietly thanked her for helping Mary Sue Robbins. He said that she was
already paying dividends for Pindar, and he was pleased with how well she
was adjusting.
As quickly as he finished speaking he and Arthur Aremian were gone. Jamie
moved back down to sit with Betty, Eddy and Kevin. They had already
planned the evening. Betty turned to Jamie and announced that the four of
them were going out. There was a band at the Pantry, and they were all
going. Jamie started to protest, but Kevin said he truly wanted her to go with
them. Jamie couldn't resist those brown eyes. She said okay, but she
needed to shower and to change clothes. They are agreed to meet at the
Pantry at 9:00.
Jamie was in frenzy when she reached the apartment. She didn't know what
to wear; she didn't know how to act. She was going to kill Betty when she
got there. But first she was going to take a shower. By the time she got out
of the shower, Betty had arrived. She had already laid out clothes for Jamie.
Jamie saw what Betty had done, and started laughing. Betty was certainly a
good friend. She knew Jamie would be freaking out, and had already helped
her. Jamie called over to Betty's room, but then heard the shower running in
the other bathroom. Jamie looked around and saw a note taped to a glass of
wine. The note read:
Jamie, I knew you'd need help with tonight. After your
shower, drink the wine. Then, put on the underwear I laid
out for you. Third, wait for me to help with your make up.
Finally, we can go out and knock this town on its ear.
Love, Betty
Jamie smiled and took a long drink of the red wine, she couldn't wait until
after her shower. She noted that it was an excellent Merlot. She may not
know how to dress as a woman yet, but she still remembered her wines.
Jamie was done showering and had just finished putting on her under
garments when Betty came in to the room. She had her hair wrapped in a
towel, and was wearing a long terry cloth robe. She carrying a glass of red
wine and smiling broadly. She told Jamie that Kevin was quite taken with
her. She went on to say that he was very appreciative about all the help Jamie
have been with Mary Sue. He didn't know what to do with her; she just
wouldn't listen to him at all. She finished with, "So, Miss Jamie, you may
have a beau!" Betty laughed, set her glass of wine down, and started
working on Jamie's makeup---after waiting for Jamie to stop blushing.
Jamie sat on the chair facing away from the mirror while Betty began
working on her face. Jamie asked where the black bikini and satin bra set
had come from. She said that she had gone through her underwear the week
before and didn't see this outfit. She was sure she would have noticed it.
Betty told her that she had noticed how plainly Jamie dressed. She decided
when Jamie stopped being a shadow she would need to spruce up her image.
She bought these a while ago, and decided this was the right night to bring
them out. Betty finished Jamie's makeup, and turned her around to face the
mirror. Jamie gasped. She was beautiful. She started to cry. This is what
she always wanted. She got up and hugged Betty. She couldn't thank her
enough. Finally, Betty said, "don't you dare cry. You'll ruin your make up.
Plus, we need to get to the Pantry. Put that dress and hose on girl. We have
hearts to break!"
Jamie went to the bed and for the first time noticed the dress that was on the
bed. She first put on the nude panty hose, as she did she wondered about
buying nylons and a garter belt. Next, she moved to the dress. It was dark
blue. It was fairly plain, long sleeves and a high collar. It showed off her
form a little, but it was certainly the dress of a woman who didn't flaunt her
body. Jamie thought she should look into a better wardrobe. Finally, she
stepped into her shoes. The heels were blue and only about 2" high.
Although she was dressed plainly, Jamie felt like the most beautiful girl in the
world. That scared her, but not enough to change clothes, or chicken out on
the date. She looked on her dresser and found a bottle of perfume, sprayed
herself, and headed out to the living room. She found Betty in there already.
She was wearing a beautiful red dress. Jamie was certain Betty was way
over dressed, but she was so intoxicated by her own look she didn't care.
Betty and Jamie went to the Pantry in Eddy's car. Betty explained that they
didn't want to have four cars to worry about. Jamie nodded, and off they
went. The bar was crowded when they got there. The guys had arrived
already, and had a table. The girls walked through the crowd; Eddy and
Kevin jumped up and greeted them at the table. Eddy kissed Betty
passionately, and Kevin awkwardly shook Jamie's hand. The girls sat
down, and Eddy took over as host. The guys had ordered a pitcher of beer,
and Eddy assumed Jamie wanted one. Kevin picked up his glass, and
proposed a toast to the day's basketball victory. They all smiled at Jamie.
She blushed and thanked them. The evening progressed without significant
event. They had a few pitchers of beer, they managed to talk when the band
was on break, and they all agreed that they were bad country and western line
dancers. Finally, the band called last dance, and Feel so Right, by Alabama
was the selection. The four rose and danced. Jamie smiled up at Kevin as
she took his hand. She smiled again as she realized he was a good dancer.
She didn't know what caused her to do it, but she put her head on his chest,
and brought her arm in close to his chest. She sighed as she did it, the words
to the song were correct; it did feel so right.
The song ended and there was last call. The guys split the bill, despite
Jamie's attempt to pay her share. They walked outside into the cold early
February night. Kevin steered Jamie to his car, and said that Eddy told him
they were going to take the long way home tonight. Kevin opened the
passenger side door, and Jamie slid in to the car. She reached over and
unlocked Kevin's door. She didn't know if he had ever seen the movie A
Bronx Tale, but if he had, he would appreciate the fact that she opened the
door for him.
Kevin slid in, started the car, and aimed towards Jamie's apartment. He
stammered for a few minutes, and then gushed out his "thank yous" to Jamie
for being such a help with Mary Sue. He said he was at wits end with her,
and she needed someone else to talk to about her new status. Jamie listened
in silence. She wanted to learn if Kevin knew who he was before he was
Kevin. Jamie thought he might, but he was not being very forthcoming.
They arrived at Jamie's apartment, and since they were still in such a deep
discussion about the girls, and their progress at school, Jamie, against her
better judgement invited Kevin in for a cup of coffee. He readily accepted,
and she led him into the living room. Instead of coffee, they both opted for
diet Coke's. Jamie sat next to him on the sofa, and after a few minutes of
chitchat about Randy Andy's she finally asked Kevin to tell her more about
what he did at Aremian's
Kevin said that he was an accountant. He was with a "big six" firm in New
York, and when his parents were killed, he came back here, and while he
was doing some work for Arthur Aremian, he wasn't sure how long it would
last, or what he would do long term. Finally, Jamie thought she needed to
take the direct approach, she said, "is that really your life story, or is it your
story for public acceptance here in Pindar?"
"What do you mean, Jamie?" Kevin replied. He blushed furiously as he said
it. Jamie pushed, "I have a feeling that you aren't telling the whole truth."
Kevin looked at Jamie, and asked why she would say that? He was who he
said he was. There wasn't any reason to think he wasn't. Jamie said she
was sorry for doubting him, but in her mind, she wanted to ask the Z-man
about Kevin. There was something about the eyes that made her think of
someone she knew, someone that she knew in her previous life.
They talked about big cities. Kevin was surprised at how much Jamie knew
about them. Finally, he said that it was time for him to go, and that he had a
wonderful time. He asked if he could see Jamie again? Jamie replied of
course, she too had a great time, and enjoyed his company very much. They
stood up, and Jamie momentarily lost her balance, and fell into Kevin. He
caught her easily and looked down at her with his beautiful brown eyes, and
Jamie lost it--she looked up, stood on her tiptoes, and kissed him. He kissed
her back. She opened her mouth and his tongue slipped into hers. She heard
herself moan and felt herself leaning even further into Kevin. He had his
arms around her now. They felt like they belonged there. She started to feel
lightheaded. The back of her brain was debating furiously over whether to
break off the kiss, or get out of her clothes. She decided on the former. She
backed away from Kevin, and looked up to see the disappointment on his
face. She smiled and said thank you Kevin that was wonderful. I hope to
see you very soon!
He took her hand and gently squeezed it as they walked the few steps to the
door. Jamie turned and faced him once more, and once more, they
passionately embraced. Jamie almost pulled him into the bedroom, but she
fought off that urge at the last moment. They said their good byes, and as
Jamie closed the door, she leaned against it and sighed again. She felt like
the schoolgirl she had never been, but had often dreamed of being. She went
into her room, drew a nice hot bath with lots of soapsuds. She climbed into
the steaming tub, closed her eyes and thought of Kevin. As her hands
explored her body, and she became more and more stimulated, she thought of
the mother in the movie Pleasantville. The first time that woman climaxed
she set the tree in the front yard on fire! Jamie brought herself to a
thunderous climax. She and Kevin had done some wonderful things in her
mind. She lay in the tub enjoying the afterglow of her climax. Her thoughts
drifted to Sunday, she had to meet Mary Sue to Aphros' department store.
Jamie hoped that Betty would be home in time to go with her and meet Mary
Sue. She knew she would need the help.
Jamie was jolted from her sleep at 11:00 am by the ringing of the telephone.
It was Betty. She was all giggles and screams as she tried to talk to Jamie.
Betty was still at Eddy's apartment, and they were having a great time, and
she hoped that Jamie would understand if she didn't come home in time to go
to the department store with Mary Sue and Jamie. Jamie said not to worry
about it, and told Betty to be careful, or she would wind up pregnant. Betty
said maybe that wouldn't be so bad!!
Then before hanging up, Betty asked how Kevin was. Except she didn't just
say Kevin. She said Keeeeviiin. Jamie said he was fine, and that HE was a
perfect gentleman, and left at a decent hour last night. Betty said, "in other
words, nothing happened," with more than a little disappointment in her
voice. Jamie laughed and ignored that last sentence. She told Betty teasingly
that she would see her at school in the morning.
Jamie got out of bed, and padded around the apartment. She had a quick
breakfast, then got ready for her trip downtown. She looked outside and it
looked cold. So, she dressed in plain white underwear, white bobby sox,
jeans, a gray turtle neck sweater, and she grabbed her leather college letter
"person's" jacket. She picked up her black leather purse and her car keys and
headed to the car to meet Mary Sue at 12:15 at the main entrance to Aphros'.
As she drove down the virtually deserted street, she thought about her own
appearance. She had the desire to crossdress since she was thirteen. She
even had three wonderful years in her mid forties when she was afforded the
chance to do just that with a wonderful woman she knew, but circumstances
had caused that to end, although they had remained friends. Yet, here she
was, a real honest to god woman, and she was dressed like she would be if
she were back home in Chicago as Jim! She decided that she needed to add
to her wardrobe. She NEEDED a better dress, and she NEEDED some
shoes, and she absolutely NEEDED some lingerie. She actually laughed out
loud as she reflected on her new needs.
Mary Sue was standing inside the store near the cosmetics counter absent-
mindedly fooling around with the myriad of bottles that were on the counter.
Jamie was sure from her mythology book who ran the store, and why it was
so well stocked for so small a town. Since Betty wasn't there to help her,
Jamie fervently hoped that the one and only Aphrodite herself would make an
appearance. She was a little afraid to meet her, but she knew the best help for
Mary Sue would be the goddess herself.
Mary Sue shyly smiled when she saw Jamie. Jamie said "hi", and then
realized that Mary Sue would have needed a ride to the store. She quickly
added, "how did you get here?" Mary Sue said that her brother drove her and
Mary Ann. He had some things to do at work, and they were to call him
when they were done. She added that Mary Ann was already up in the
Misses department looking around.
Mary Sue then looked at Jamie, and said, "can you help me? I feel so weird.
I don't think I can do this. Maybe I should call Jack and tell him I'm sick."
Jamie looked at her, and said, not. You are a wonderful young lady now.
You had better get used to it. In fact, after I help you, I will need you to help
me. I have to buy some things as well. Let's get started!"
The two new girls headed to the escalator, and went up to the Misses
department. As soon as they stepped off of the moving stairway the smiling
Mary Ann greeted them. She had already found her dress for the dance; in
fact, she had picked out her entire ensemble. She said she would love to help
Mary Sue, but she had left all her clothes with the cashier, and really wanted
to check out some CD's. She promised to come back before they were ready
to leave. Jamie and Mary Sue said their good byes and good lucks to Mary
Ann and in unison breathed a sigh of relief, they both knew that they would
be better off without her assistance. They entered the dress area, and Jamie
asked Mary Sue what size she thought she was. Mary Sue was about to say
that she didn't have a clue, when the most charming woman walked up to
them with a beautiful navy blue velvet dress. She said, "Mary Sue I think
this is just your size."
It was she. Jamie was sure of it. She introduced herself as Anne. But there
was no mistaking it. This woman entranced Jamie and Mary Sue. She took
Mary Sue by the hand, and led her into the changing room. Jamie stood
outside the room. It seemed like every thing else in the universe had stopped.
Moment's later Mary Sue emerged totally transformed. The dress was
magnificent. It was floor length, with a scalloped neckline, short puffy
sleeves. Mary Sue had matching two-inch heels, a gold locket around her
neck, and her hair somehow or another was fixed exactly how it should look
with this dress, it was up in an elegant style. "Jamie, what do you think?"
said Anne. "Mary Sue, you are absolutely gorgeous! Anne, that is perfect
for her!"
Anne smiled, and said, "you expected less?" She then turned to Mary Sue,
and gently asked, "and what do you think you lady?" Mary Sue replied,
"Oh, it is beautiful. I can't wait to wear it to the dance."
Anne smiled again, and said, "well that was easy. Mary Sue, why don't you
go back into the changing room and take that off. Take off everything, down
to the lingerie, put on your clothes, and then put your new garments by the
cash register. I know that Jamie wants to look at some clothes. Why don't
you see where your sister went." Mary Sue disappeared into the changing
room, and Anne turned to Jamie and said, "let's head over to the section I
know you had in mind."
Jamie moved as if she was floating on air. Soon she was trying on the
sexiest lingerie she had ever seen. She moved from bras and panties to
camisoles, she even put on a wasp waist corset that was absolutely
wonderful. She had garter belts and the sheerest of nylons. She was so
excited, and so pleased to have these she never questioned prices or how she
would ever pay for any of this. Anne had her keep the sexy red bra and
panty set on while she went to the dress section. Anne returned with a
strapless red cocktail dress that was breathtaking. Jamie slid into the dress
and knew she had to have it. It made her think of the Lorrie Morgan song,
Something in Red. As she admired herself in the full-length mirror in the
changing room, she found herself standing in three-inch heels. She smiled at
Anne and the next thing she knew she was arranging for all of her purchases
to be delivered to the apartment.
Jamie was still in her trance like state when the girls came bounding up to the
cashier counter. Jamie turned to see the twins smiling. They had each
purchased a couple of CD's, and were back to get their purchases. Anne
reached behind the counter and handed each girl three large bags. Jamie was
glad to see them both happy. Mary Ann looked to Jamie and said we need to
call Kevin, he can pick us up. Jamie replied, why don't you call him and tell
him I'll take you two home. There is no sense in him having to come back
downtown. They agreed, and Anne suggested they use the telephone at the
cashier counter. After a brief discussion Kevin relented, and agreed to let
Jamie take them home.
The ride out to the Robbins home was uneventful. The twins were
disappointed that Jamie's car didn't have a CD player, but they were happy
that she would stay to see Mary Ann try on her dance outfit, and see Mary
Sue's again.
The girls were in the midst of parading around the living room in their
dresses--they were almost exact opposites. Mary Ann had a dark black mini-
dress that left little or nothing to the imagination, while Mary Sue's was floor
length, but both girls were knockouts! When Kevin arrived from Aremian's,
he grinned broadly when he saw the scene in front of him. His sisters both
jumped right in front of him for his male evaluation of their ensembles, he
complimented both of them profusely. Then he smiled at Jamie. He thanked
her for her help, and then said, "I am starving, have you guys eaten
anything?" The three women said no in unison, so Kevin suggested they go
to the Pantry for a burger. It was quickly agreed to, and the twins hustled
upstairs to change out of their dance dresses. Kevin walked over to Jamie,
and once again thanked her. He went to put his arms around her to kiss her,
but Mary Ann was back into the living room before he could act on this
thought. The four of them piled into Kevin's car, Jamie sat up front with
Kevin, and the girls in the back. The twins were busy telling Kevin how
much fun they had at the store and thanked him for his Visa card. Kevin
laughingly winced, but said, "you're welcome."
Dinner was fun, the twins kept Jamie and Kevin entertained with stories, and
plans. Jamie marveled at how well Mary Sue was adjusting. Kevin looked
to Jamie like he wanted to ask her something, but couldn't get either the
courage or the opening to do it. Finally, the conversation swung back to the
school Valentine's Day dance. Mary Ann said that there would be six
couples coming to their house for pictures. Kevin said that would be fine,
and he would be glad to take pictures. He also asked if he could drive some
of the couples, but Mary Ann said Mr. Cassin and Mr. Rogers were driving
them to the dance, and that there were two other dads driving them all home.
Mary Sue asked Jamie if she could help her get ready. Kevin said he didn't
think that would be necessary, and that Jamie would have better things to do.
Jamie said she would be delighted, besides, she wasn't on the dance
chaperone committee for this dance, and she would love to see some of her
students dressed up.
After dinner, they drove back to the Robbins home, and the twins scampered
out of the car. Jamie said that it was late, and she had better get home.
Kevin walked her over to her car, and once again thanked her for all her help,
today and over the last few weeks with Mary Sue. Then he stammered a bit
and after a minute just blurted out that there was a Valentine's Day dance at
the local club this Saturday night and Mr. Aremian had invited him. He
wanted to know if Jamie would mind being his date. Jamie was a little
shocked, but was thrilled. She said she would love to go to the party with
him. She said that they would have to work out the logistics, since the party
was the same night as the twin's dance, and she promised to help Mary Sue
get ready. She didn't want to come dressed for the Aremian dance at five
o'clock. She looked at Kevin, stepped forward, and kissed him on the lips.
He started to open his mouth but Jamie backed up and smiled. "Save that
thought for next Saturday!" She couldn't believe she said that. Where did
that come from she thought? Oh my, she thought, and her thoughts went
back to the red dress. Anne knew this was going to happen. Jamie smiled as
she drove back to her apartment. She turned on the radio, and Something in
Red came on the country and western channel. Jamie looked at the radio, and
then upward, and said silently, "thank you Zeus, I love this town!"
Jamie walked into the apartment and saw Betty sprawled on the couch. She
was already in her "Ally Macbeal" style pajamas. Jamie couldn't tell if Betty
was intently watching Television, or just staring into space and lost in her
thoughts. "Earth to Betty, Earth to Betty," Jamie called. Betty languorously
stretched, and looked up at Jamie. Betty said, "I just had the most wonderful
weekend of my life. How about you?"
Jamie said it wasn't so bad, but she wanted the details on Betty's weekend
first. Betty filled her in on most of what happened. It boiled down to the fact
that she and Eddy stayed naked from Saturday night until about two hours
ago. They didn't even eat. Betty just sat there with a dreamy look on her
face. Finally, she said, "Jamie, I am so glad you're not a shadow anymore.
I would burst if I couldn't talk to a real person. I really think I am getting a
ring next Saturday. I love Eddy. I love my life. I love this town. I can't tell
you how happy I am." Then she hugged Jamie, and inexplicably they both
started crying. Jamie was happy for Betty, but she completely agreed with
her about the town too.
After more than a few tissues, Betty said she was sorry about not helping
with Mary Sue this morning. Jamie told her it wasn't a problem. She had
received some help from Anne herself. Betty was impressed. Jamie then
told her she bought a few things for herself, and they would be arriving on
Tuesday afternoon. Then?.she told Betty that she would be the guest of
Mr. Kevin Robbins at the Valentine's day party at the club. Mr. Aremian had
invited Kevin and he invited her!
Betty was ecstatic. She said we have to get you a new dress! You don't
have anything to wear. Jamie said not to worry. Anne had taken care of her.
One of the items she bought today was a dress and it would be perfect for the
dance. Betty gave Jamie a look that showed she knew just how perfect the
dress would be if Anne had helped her pick it out. The girls hugged again
then flipped a coin to see who would drive tomorrow. Jamie won, which
meant Betty would drive.
Jamie went to her room, put on some warm flannel pajamas, and crawled into
bed. She was tired, not physically, but mentally. It had been a busy day.
As she slept, she dreamt that she was in the Lorrie Morgan's song Something
in Red. She went from dancing in that dress with Kevin, to something in
white, to something in blue, back to something in Red. When she awoke,
she was surprised, as Jim, she never seemed to remember dreams, but last
night seemed so vivid. She smiled as she thought of making love to Kevin,
getting married to him, having his baby, Oh my!, and then settling in for a
wonderful life--that was getting way ahead of her proverbial headlights.
Jamie and Betty headed off to school. The talk centered on the dance that
THEY would be going to this weekend. Not the school dance. Betty was
glad that Jamie was making such great progress with Mary Sue. She said
that talk in the teachers lounge was how much Jamie had changed. She was
always considered a nice person, but too much of a jock and a loner. But
lately there was talk that she had softened, and her work with Mary Sue had
one teacher suggesting that she go back and get her masters degree in
counseling. Jamie thanked Betty for the update, and said that the idea of a
degree in counseling wasn't a bad thought.
Monday was just a typical day at school. Betty and Jamie drove home talking
briefly about school, and lesson plans. Tuesday started out calmly enough
until last period. The Robbins twins ran into class smiling and giggling.
They were too excited to sit down. When the bell rang to start class, she
instructed the class to start reading the next chapter, and took the twins out
into the hallway. They were excited because they said they won a free in
home make over from Aphros'. The store would be sending two beauty
representatives to their house Saturday night before the dance. They also said
they could have anyone else they wanted to be there, and the store would help
them too!!! Mary Sue got a serious look on her face, and said they decided
that since Jamie had offered to help already, they wanted her to come, and
take advantage of the make over. They weren't inviting anyone else.
Jamie was flattered, but declined at least three times before relenting. She
promised to be there by five o'clock. Jamie was excited about that
opportunity. She knew she'd look better if she had help, and she also knew
she wouldn't be much help to the twins--other than taking some pictures.
She was telling the story to Betty as they pulled up in front of their apartment.
As they pulled up, they saw the delivery truck from Aphros'. The driver was
delivering her purchases from Sunday afternoon. Jamie couldn't tell who
was more excited she or Betty. The two girls ran to the deliveryman, took
the packages and dashed into the apartment. The next few hours were spent
with Betty sitting on the couch, and Jamie going back and forth from her
bedroom to the living room showing off all of her purchases.
Betty was thrilled at how wonderful Jamie looked in her new red dress. She
said that poor Kevin wouldn't have a chance at keeping his cool once he saw
her in that dress. Jamie blushed, but she "kinda hoped" that Betty was right.
Thursday, Kevin called to work out the details for Saturday night. He
suggested that he could pick her up around four o'clock Saturday afternoon,
that way she wouldn't have to worry about her car. Jamie said fine, and as
she hung up the telephone, she could feel the moisture between her legs! She
was getting nervous about Saturday. She wasn't afraid of what Kevin would
do, but now she was afraid about what she would do to Kevin!
Saturday, February 14th dawned cool and crisp. Both girls were up early.
Betty had a hair dresser appointment, Jamie went with her to get her nails
done. It was a first for her. Betty and Jamie were back by two o'clock, and
they had a light lunch. The girls were both getting excited. Betty because
she was sure she was going to get an engagement ring, and Jamie because
this was her first real date. Jamie got all of her 'stuff' together. She had her
shoes, hose, dress, and undergarments along with her purse and coat. The
twins said she wouldn't need cosmetics, the folks at Aphros' would be
supplying everything.
Kevin was right on time. He rang the doorbell and Betty answered the door.
She was in her robe, and was stilling two hours from getting dressed. She
invited Kevin in, and offered him a drink. He declined because he said they
needed to be back to his house within an hour. Jamie came out of her room
with two bags. She was dressed in sweats. Her hair was pulled back in a
ponytail, but she was wearing a great smile. As soon as he saw her, Kevin
was wearing one too. They kissed awkwardly, and turned to say good bye
to Betty. She told them she'd see them at the dance.
The drive to the Robbins house was filled with small talk. It centered mostly
on the fact that the twins were both making him crazy today. They were both
completely hyper about the dance. He was glad to see that Mary Sue was
excited, and he was nervous about the plans that Mary Ann was concocting.
They pulled into the driveway and the girls were out in a flash. They were
both in their robes, and were barefoot. They were excited to see Jamie, and
wanted to see her dress, and went on and on. Kevin managed to get them
into the house, and slightly calmed down. The three girls went upstairs while
Kevin turned on the television and settled into watching a basketball game.
At precisely five o'clock a minivan pulled in behind Kevin's car. It was the
makeover artists from Aphros'. There were four of them, and they were
carrying more concoctions than Kevin had ever seen. He directed the women
upstairs and went back to the game. He fell asleep, and had a wonderful
dream about spending the night with Jamie. We awoke at 6:45, only fifteen
minutes before the boys would be arriving! He jumped up and called to the
girls to see how they were doing. Jamie came down, still in her sweats, to
tell him that the girls would be ready in a few minutes. She asked about
where the pictures would be taken, and if he had soda for the parents. He
gave Jamie a pained look. She smiled and went into the kitchen. She pulled
some ice out of the freezer, and handed it to Kevin who was smart enough to
get the ice bucket. She then placed an assortment of soda on the table. She
then asked Kevin where his camera was. He thought for a few moments, but
was able to locate it.
They checked for film, and headed back into the living room. The girls were
making there way down the stairs; Kevin saw them and visibly gasped. He
couldn't believe how beautiful the girls looked. They were not overly made
up, but everything about them was perfect. They were both smiling broadly,
obviously very pleased with their look. Jamie suggested pictures. She got
them together, apart, with their brother, and then with her. She said she
looked terrible in her sweats, but they would not relent. She asked for an
extra picture of her and Mary Sue. This made Mary Sue very happy; she had
come to truly like her teacher.
The rest of the dance group started showing up at 7:10. There was a swirl of
activity pictures, parents, and flowers being pinned on lapels and dresses.
By 7:45, it was over. Young Jack Cassin, Mary Sue's date was a fifteen
year old delight. He was in a sport coat just slightly too large, and he was
absolutely bedazzled by Mary Sue. She seemed to be gaining poise and
feminine wiles by the moment. Kevin checked with the parents who were
driving, and the mother who would have the girls over night. Everything
was in order. He looked at Jamie, and said he would take a shower and get
dressed. He asked if leaving at 8:30 was in the realm of possibility. She said
she woul
