The Price of Magic

The rain was pouring down hard all over the kingdom of Darst, which
wasn't uncommon for that time of the year. However, a young man dressed
in blue and gray robes was walking through the rain without seeming to
notice it. The thin, oung, minor wizard, Sorven by name, was too lost
in thought about his upcoming Trials to pay ny attention to something so
minor as the weather.
Sorven had recently completed his years journeying after completing his
four years at the Academy, training to become a minor wizard. The day
that he'd ucceeded had been the happiest, and the proudest of his life.
He'd finally gained the title of wizard, earned through all his hard
work at mastering his magics. Then his year long journey began.
Throughout the last year, Sorven had frequently found cause to use his
magic powers as he wandered about the kingdom. As he sought employment,
and further tests of his powers and magic. It had been the hardest
thing that Sorven had ever done, even arder than graduating from the
Academy itself.
But finally he'd completed the required traveling, and was free to
choose his own life and career. For the last year, he'd thought long
and hard about it. About what he was going to do. The choices were so
many. He could go to some castle or lord and seek employment as a court
wizard, or he could open up his own shop and use his magic's for
commoners and peasants. There were other options as well, and Sorven
had put great thought into them all.
Finally though, Sorven had decided. It hadn't been easy, but he did
make up his mind. Sorven had greatly enjoyed the use of his magic, and
the feeling of wonder that he got every time that he did so. He
couldn't help but wanting to use it even more, to gain even more magic.
That was what lead him to his decision to take the Trials, and try to
become a sorcerer.
Sorcerers were the highest ranking and most powerful of the magic
users. They were the select few who'd chosen to undergo the Trials, to
face the Gods and ook into the source of magic itself. Few who
attempted the Trials succeeded. And where success meant greater power,
failure meant death. They were not to be taken lightly.
Slowly, Sorven walked through the rain, towards the Great Hall, where
he was scheduled to take the Trials in just a couple hours. He was
scared and nervous, but he felt anticipation as well. Today was the day
that he'd either succeed in his dreams, or die.
Finally, Sorven stopped where he was, staring at the huge crystal
building in front of him. During sunnier days, light would have been
gleaming from it, making it visible from miles away. But even now in
rain, it was still impressive, making Sorven gulp in awe.
"The Great Hall" he whispered, staring at the magical structure. The
great Hall was the gathering place for the Sorcerers, the great magic
users who were the true power in Darst, and the instructors at the
Academy. And most importantly, at least for the moment, it was the
place where Sorven was to take the Trials.
Sorven shook off his amazement for the moment, carefully walking
forward to where the huge crystal doors swung open for him on their own,
and he went inside.
A tall woman was standing inside the entrance, and Sorven couldn't help
but staring at her. Or more specifically, at her dark green skin.
"My name is Jedai" she introduced herself. "And you are Sorven" Jedai
said the last as a statement, not as a question.
"Yes ma'am" Sorven mumbled, forcing his eyes off of her. He'd heard of
Jedai Greenskin, but then most of the students at the Academy had. She
was a famous sorceress, not only for her skin color, but from the fact
that she'd also once killed a dragon, single handedly. And that was no
mean feat.
"Come supplicant" Jedai stated, gesturing with her hand, "Follow me"
That was all Sorven needed to hurry behind her as she lead him through
the impressive halls.
As they walked through the corridors, Sorven didn't see a single other
person. Not that he really expected to since only sorcerers and
supplicants for the Trials were allowed inside.
Soon they came to another large door, which Jedai gestured to and it
opened. "Come inside" she said, giving Sorven a sad smile. She
obviously expected Sorven to fail the Trials, which made him more
determined to succeed.
Sorven went inside, and stopped where he was, staring in awe at the
incongruent mixture of splendor and simplicity decorating the room. The
walls were made of a gorgeous crystal, with several crystalline pillars
rising up and supporting the stylish ceiling. The floor seemed to have
been made from a single shiny piece of shiny black obsidian, with
several lines and symbols of gold metal carved within it. And around
the room was a single long table, curved all the way around into a giant
horseshoe. The table was very plain looking, and was surrounded by two
dozen plain but sturdy looking chairs, each being filled by a sorcerer.
Sorven barely noticed as Jedai left his side and took her seat in one
of the chairs. His eyes were instead too impressed by his surroundings,
and mostly on the mages. Many of them were obviously different. Like
Jedai. Sorven knew very well that in spite of her green skin, she was
just as human as he was. She, and all the other sorcerers and
sorceresses were marked by the magic.
Unable to help himself, Sorven gulped, remembering what Master Bron had
once told him at the Academy. That all those who pass the Trials and
become sorcerers are marked by the gods. Marked by magic. No one really
knew why, though theories abounded. Some said it was to show who had
been blessed and gifted with the greater magical powers, while others
said that it was to brand them like animals. One theory was that the
magical changes were to remind the mages that they were no longer human,
while another espoused that it was to give them humility, to remind them
that there were still powers greater than themselves. And of course,
there were those who said that it was divine justice.
Sorven didn't know which it was, nor did he care. All he knew was that
the way that each sorcerer was marked or changed was different for each
of them. Jedai had green skin, Loxmar the head of the Academy had solid
blue eyes. Sorven's old teacher Bron had four arms and another of his
teachers had a tail.
Around the room, Sorven saw his old teachers, and others that he
ecognized from the Academy. There were also mages that he didn't
recognize, though some that he'd heard from. A woman in the back had a
face which looked decidedly catlike. One man in he corner looked to be
extremely old and had a long white beard, but Sorven knew from
experience that this man was only several years older than himself. A
little girl sat in one hair, and a man with a reptilian hand in another.
Finally, a woman with butterfly wings stood up and asked in a formal
tone "What is the supplicants name?"
Sorven gulped, realizing that the question was directed at him.
Gathering his courage, he answered "Sorven...ma'am"
"Do you know what the Trials entail?" she asked.
"I do" he answered in accordance to the ritual.
The woman with the butterfly wings sat down, while Master Bron stood
up. "All magic's have their price" he stated, repeating what he'd often
told his classes, "and their risks. The Trials are no different."
"I understand" Sorven announced bravely, staring back at Master Bron
and swearing that he could see both pride and worry in the older man's
eyes. "I am ready to take the Trials, and knowingly accept the risks"
The surrounding sorcerers and sorceresses nodded and Master Bron
answered "Very well then"
With that, Jedai got back up and gestured. Suddenly a square glowed in
he middle of the floor, several feet away from Sorven. Then it
vanished, leaving a hole in the floor, with black steps going down into
darkness.
Sorven eyed the steps and gulped, only being able to guess at what was
at the bottom. He nervously glanced at the mages who surrounded him, but
their blank faces gave no answers. All he saw on their faces were looks
of hope, of sorrow and even some of disinterest or amusement.
Taking a deep breath, Sorven looked once again into the darkness below.
He'd come there seeking power, and knowing that there'd be a price to
pay. But did he really want to pay it, he wondered for the thousandth
time. Did he really want the magic that much? Was he willing to pay
any price for magic?
Sorven sighed, forcing himself not to look away. He'd already answered
these questions for himself over the last year. While growing up in the
streets, the son of a poor merchant, he hadn't expected much from life.
He hadn't even demonstrated any talents for following the family
business, and it had looked like he had no other skills either. And no
future. Not until he'd discovered that he had a talent for magic and
recruited for the Academy. Then everything changed. He had an ability
that he loved. Magic. He wanted to learn everything he could about it,
and to become the best he could be. And now, Sorven wanted to take the
next logical step. He wanted to become a sorcerer, even if it meant
risking his life.
Without another word, Sorven stepped down to the first step, then
continued walking down into the darkness below. The steps seemed to go
on forever as Sorven continued to descent, leaving the light above
further and further behind. Then finally, there was no more light, only
the darkness which surrounded him completely.
Sorven's heart raced with fear and excitement both at once. He
couldn't help wondering, where were the challenges that he was supposed
to face. Where were the Trials?
Suddenly a glowing light filled everywhere, and Sorven covered his eyes
so he wouldn't be blinded. A moment later, he cautiously looked out
again, seeing that everything was lit, but that there was no sign of the
stairs that he'd just been on. Instead, he seemed to be standing on a
flat floor which he couldn't see. There were no walls visible, just a
whiteness as far as he could see in any direction.
Then glowing lights of every color started to sweep around Sorven,
filling the whiteness with color. Sorven gasped in amazement and awe as
he tried to make sense f what he was seeing. A faint tingling began to
fill Sorven and he was suddenly able to sense a presence. Or was that
lots of presences? Sorven wasn't really able to tell if there was only
one or more.
"The Gods?" Sorven nervously asked aloud, but no answer was
forthcoming. Instead, all he could feel was the strange distant
presence/s.
The lights and colors began to swirl around faster and faster, making
Sorven begin to get dizzy as he tried to watch them all. Then suddenly
they all seemed to flow into him, nearly causing Sorven to scream as
confusion filled him.
Every moment of Sorven's life went through his mind at once. Every
emotion that he'd ever felt, every thought that he'd ever though and
every bit of magic that he'd ever touched all jumped out at him at once.
The young minor wizard clearly remembered his father and mother as they
argued about the taxes. He remembered his older sister Betal who
married as soon she turned 15 summers old, and leaving them. He hadn't
seen her since. Memories of girls that Sorven had dated filled his
mind, as did his classmates at the Academy. Then even more images and
memories came, one after another, more than he could keep track of.
Sorven tried to scream, but no sounds came out. Instead, he was filled
ith his entire life, all at once, and with the sense that it was being
judged. That his very soul was being judged. And at that same moment, he
was filled with magic. More magic than he'd ver touched before in his
life.
The magic screamed out for Sorven to grab hold of it and not let go. To
lash out with it towards the presence/s that surrounded him and fight
back against the overwhelming flood of information. And at the same
time, something inside of him screamed that the magic didn't belong.
That it was foreign to his body and his being and should not be et in.
That he should fight it with every bit of his being, refusing to let it
enter and control him like he sensed it was trying to do.
But Sorven didn't do either. He didn't know how long he was confused
and senseless, but finally reacted out of some inner instinct which he
wasn't aware of, and instead of fighting the magic, grasping it
possessively or violently throwing it at the presence/s, he just relaxed
and let it flow through him.
It seemed to go on forever, but suddenly everything eased away. The
presence/s seemed to vanish, as did the colored lights. And with them,
the rest of he light faded away as well, leaving Sorven standing in the
darkness, unable to see anything at all. His heart was racing and he
felt more tired than he'd ever felt in his life, but at the same time,
he could feel something warm inside of him. It was the magic, he
realized in amazement. It was still inside of him.
Sorven stood there, tired and exhausted for several minutes, reveling
in the knowledge that he still had the magic inside of him. Then he
realized that he was standing on the stairs again, just where he was
when the light had come to him.
"I passed" Sorven whispered in amazement, "at least I think I did" He
wasn't really sure, but what else made sense. The magic was inside of
him, stronger than what he was used to. It was even making his body
feel tingly.
For a moment, Sorven considered continuing down the stairs to see what
was at the bottom, but something inside of him seemed to say that there
was nothing. That there was no bottom to the stairs and that they just
went on and on forever, or at least until the person on them met the
"light." After thinking about it for a moment, Sorven turned and
started back up to the top.
As Sorven went back up, he felt a tingly feeling every time his foot
touched a step. It seemed to go over his entire body, making it almost
feel like something's were changing slightly, though Sorven didn't know
what. Not really. He knew that whatever he was feeling must be the
marks of his new magic, the price that he paid for gaining it, but he
still didn't know how the magic was changing him.
The new sorcerer forced himself to take his time as he went back up the
steps in the dark, not being able to see his way and fearing that he
could easily slip and break an ankle if he wasn't careful. He even tried
briefly using his magic to light the way, but no light came when he
called. None of his spells worked in the dark stairway. So without
nything to light his way, Sorven continued back the way he'd came,
nervously wondering just how the magic would mark him.
Finally Sorven could see the light beginning to make itself noticed,
and with every step, it only started to get lighter and lighter. The
opening for the stairway became visible, and made Sorven sigh in relief.
"Light at last" Sorven whispered to himself, carefully continuing up to
the top.
When Sorven finally stepped out of the stairway, back into the room
he'd started from, he saw that he was still surrounded by all the
sorcerers and sorceresses. Many of them smiled in relief or excitement,
though not all of them.
"Sorven?" Master Bron asked, sounding surprised.
"Yes?" Sorven answered, wondering what was wrong.
Suddenly, Sorven realized that his voice had sounded wrong. For a
second, he thought that his voice being changed must have been how the
magic had marked him, but then he realized that his whole body felt
wrong as well. With a nervous gulp, Sorven forced himself to look down
and get it over with.
Sorven's eyes were met with a pair of breasts that pushed out from his
chest, and a quick examination revealed that the rest of his body had
changed as well. That he seemed to have turned into a woman.
"Congratulations" Master Bron told Sorven, obviously struggling to keep
is eyes from Sorven's chest. Some of the other mages didn't bother. "I
knew that you could do it"
"Thank you Master Bron" Sorven told him, looking at his former teachers
extra arms.
"No" the older sorcerer chuckled, "Just Bron now. You're a sorcerer
now.....er...sorceress I guess"
Bron looked slightly embarrassed, though not nearly as much as Sorven.
but as embarrassed as Sorven was at his sudden gender change, he also
felt thrilled and excited. He'd made it. The new magic filled him,
making Sorven smile at his success and the fulfillment of his dream. He
knew that his new body might be a little embarrassing and uncomfortable,
but it was worth it for the magic. It was worth it for his dream.
One by one the other sorcerers and sorceresses came by and congraduated
Sorven, leaving the chamber afterwards. Finally Jedai came up and gave
Sorven an amused grin.
"Congratulations Sorven" Jedai told him, still smiling, "Or is that
Sorvena now?"
Sorvena chuckled. "Why not?"
For a moment, Jedai and Sorvena looked at each other, then they left
the room together, neither looking back at the stairway which had
disappeared, leaving only the obsidian floor where it had been.
As they were walking out, Jedai noted, "Some changes are more difficult
to get used to than others"
Sorvena nodded agreement, but her mind wasn't really on her new form.
Sure it was strange, and even a little uncomfortable at the moment, but
she knew that wouldn't last too long. She knew that she'd eventually get
used to it, and probably even think of t as natural. At the moment her
new gender wasn't that important. What was important was her success.
The rest was just the price she had to pay for magic.
