Leo and Maya stared at the pregnancy test hopefully. Finally, crestfallen,
Maya said, "Negative."
Leo kissed his wife. "It's okay, hun. There's always next month."
"You've been saying that for six month now. We've finally agreed that it's
the perfect time to start a family, but no matter how hard we try, we can't

Maya sat down, despondent. She wanted a baby so bad, but after a half year
of trying, she was beginning to wonder if maybe there was something
physically wrong with her or Leo. She wanted to go to a fertility clinic, but
their services weren't covered by the health insurance Leo had. It was a bit
ironic that if she got pregnant, the baby and the pregnancy would be covered,
but just getting pregnant was not.
She went upstairs to her room. She sat on the bed for a minute before
remembering a gift her mother had given her on her wedding day. It had
been kind of mysterious. Her mother had taken her aside and given her this
old, old coin. She had said to be very careful with it, hopefully to pass it on
to one of her children, but she also said that if she ever needed help, was in

She went to her lingerie drawer (the one place she was sure Leo would never

her to save it for her kids, but if Maya didn't get some help, she'd never have

the family wish, or save it for a child of yours?"
Maya was incredulous, and for a brief second wondered if she was
dreaming, but wasn't going to pass up a chance to get what she needed. "If I
don't get some help, I don't think I'm going to have a baby to pass anything
on to."
"So you want to be pregnant? Simple enough. Just hold the coin and wish
for it."
Maya looked at the coin for a second and thought about it. She could have
the baby that she and Leo wanted, but what about the next time? She wanted
a BIG family. So she considered it for a while, held the coin and wished, "I
wish my husband and I could get pregnant just by wanting it whenever we

"Uhm, lassie, perhaps you might want to be rethinkin' the wordin' on that
particular wish."
"Can't you grant it?"
"Yes, but I think ye ought to know, I am obliged to grant the wish exactly as

Maya thought about it, but didn't see what was wrong with her wish. "I
wish my husband and I could get pregnant just by wanting it when we had

Patty shook his head. Mortals rarely thought their wishes through, but with a
little twist, Patty could grant this wish and still make them happy. With a
snap of his fingers, and a shower of light, Patty and the coin faded from
view. Maya felt a tingle in her gut and was prepared to go have sex with her
husband, when she heard a scream from downstairs where she left her

IN A PLACE BETWEEN PLACES...
Dannie was sweeping the store floor when she heard the tinkle of the bell

nonplused when a two foot tall man dressed all in green walked in.

"This a social visit, or business?"
"Little of both. Need to make a deposit, but then we can talk."
The Wizard waved his hand and a large pot filled with gold coins appeared on
the counter. Patty pulled some items out of his pocket (a couple rings, a gold
pen, and a couple coins) and dropped them into the pot. As soon as they
stopped moving, there was a bit of magic and anything that wasn't a coin
shifted forms into a coin.
The Wizard then said, "Since we're handling business first, your rental fees
are almost due."
"Of course, of course. Never let it be said that Patty O'Toole ever welshed
on a debt. I believe our agreement was one gold coin?"
"One coin from as far down in the pot as you can reach, Patty."
Patty reached as far into the pot as he could. "Of course, old friend." After a
second Patty pulled his hand out. In it was one coin. "A bit expensive, but
well worth it. The ends of rainbows just aren't as safe as they used to be."
Patty flipped the coin, and with a one handed snatch, the old man caught it in
mid-air. "And that covers you for another decade. Now what else can I get
for you?"
"Got any of that tobacco I like? I'm running a bit low."
"Sure. In my private stash. Come on in back."
Dannie continued her work as the old man and the leprechaun went in back.
About a half hour later, they came back, Patty saying, "So this twit wishes
for a job where he'd have a lot of people under him, all of whom HAD to
listen to him."
The old man stroked his beard, contemplating Patty's words. "I can think of
a half dozen ways to change that wish to have little fun. What'd you do?"
"Why, me old friend, you know full well I can't CHANGE a wish. Surely
you're not insinuating that Patty O'Toole would ever handle a wish in
violation of the rules set down millennia ago?"
The wizard laughed. "Of course not. Let's just say you might have
'creatively re-interpreted' his words. But how did you handle him?"
"Changed him into a housewife. I was going to make him a single mother,
but I sold his wife a wish, and she wished they were still married, so now
she's the husband, and he the wife."
"Wonderful. Are you sure you can't stay longer? Your visits are so rare."
"Wish I could, but gold won't collect itself. Next time I'll try to schedule
more time for socializing."
"It's a deal, Patty."
After Patty left, Dannie was thinking about their visitor when she heard the
wizard say, "Yes, that was a real leprechaun."
"And you store his gold for him?"
"Yes. Although I store his gold mostly to bring him back here every once in
a while. If you ever get to be centuries old, you learn to appreciate those who
can share your extended view of time."
"Is that why you charge him so little? One gold a decade?"
"My dear, that's one bit of leprechaun gold a decade. Leprechaun gold is
powerful magic, and the longer it sits inside a faerie pot, the more powerful it
gets. But even without that extra power, the coin would be worth it. Faerie
magic cannot be duplicated by any person without fae blood."
"Is faerie magic more powerful?"
"In some ways, but it's far more unpredictable in nature. Only a fae can
control all its effects."
"Then why is it so valuable? If it can't be controlled...?"
"Why, my dear, sometimes it's the unpredictability that makes it so fun to
use." The wizard pulled the coin out and flipped it into the air. "The fact is,"
he snatched the coin on its way down, "I actually got the better end of this
deal. Don't forget to dust those shelves."

NINE MONTHS LATER...
Maya's doctor told her, "Okay, on the next contraction I want you to really
bear down and push." Maya lay in bed, fully in labor, and wanting this to be
all over. The worst part was, her "husband" wasn't here with her. But he
had problems of his own right now.
In another room, Lee Ann (once Leo) was giving birth to a child of "his"
own. "One more push and your baby should come right out." She pushed
