I Dunno, I was very upset at first, I mean when I went to the site to see what
ever S2K was going to be, I expected there to be a new banner, announcing it's
arrival, you know, a big affair, but there wasn't and I just chalked that up to
faster loading times (as a webmaster/computer tech I can see the need lots of
times). But when I went to the latest stories and it was named Number 2000, I
was about to click of the site and not come back for a week or so. I thought,
"After something so important like this, at least to all us readers, that is all
they come up with???" I was extremely disappointed.
But, after a quick breather out on the balcony at my apartment, I went back into
my bedroom and decided to read. As I clicked on the link, something weird
started to happen. I was surrounded. Not with people, or anything physical, but
with a, I don't know how to explain it, it was a sensation unknown to myself,
almost as if there was a force keeping me from moving. Then, all of a sudden,
something happened. First I floated up, about 3 feet above my chair, I then
began to spin and started to shrink. Next thing I know, my computer screen went
black and this circle, that looked like some of the fractal's that I have
created on my Linux box started pulsating. I was soon smaller than the monitor
itself. As if I were a piece of spaghetti, I was sucked into the computer.
I was flying through cyberspace, traveling like a TCP packet, I could see all my
favorite sites fly by, and even some that I had never seen before, next thing I
know, I was in a all white room filled with about 25 other people, they were
running around, trying to figure out where they were, after talking to them, I
found out that similar things had brought them here.....
While the stories differed a little, (the ones on windows machines hit the
screen a couple times and had "Windows Protection Fault at Address:??????" type
errors pop up), we were all transported here after viewing "Number 2000". One
other strange side not, I noticed that while there were both sexes present,
everyone was technically minded as in computers/internet. I noticed a few ex-
colleagues form other IRC networks, which started me thinking. All of a sudden,
a small black portal opened up on the other side of the room and a small woman
popped in.
She said she was part of a supernatural continuum that regulates the balance of
human emotions, and feelings. She told us that we were transported here, as part
of a mistake. She told us that "Number 2000" was never supposed to exist and
that she thinks that there is another "Super Natural Force" at work.
After a brief discussion, I pointed out the fact that we were all technically
minded. The women then said, "Yes, I know this. I have been holding out on you a
little, here is what we know." this peaked my interest. She continued,
"Apparently, there is quite a large group of men being "Magically" transformed
into women and vise versa, women into men." She continued to explain that this
affected all of them after reading "Number 2000" or as they referred to it,
"#2K".
Her theory was that there was someone with "Super Natural" powers using the
latest super high tech equipment combined with their powers to create this
mishap. That there was no way, that she could either place us back in the
natural world with their group's powers alone, and that they couldn't stop what
was happening out there either.
With that, 5 large tech tables were rolled in. Each table had 5 computers on it,
one for each of us. They were all setup, booted and running. All the computers
were networked AMD K7 Anthlon 700Mhz Processors, with 32MB VooDoo3 4000
Videocards, 256MB RAM, and 14.7GB HDD's with the operating system of our choice.
They believed that we were probably sent here to keep us from stumbling on a way
to reverse the technological control that the person responsible had. With that,
we all took our positions, and started to work, some of us teamed up, others,
who thought they were "all that", decided to work on theories by themselves.
While we were working, some transformations started happening to us. Not only
were we switching genders, but it also seemed as if we all started to get
younger. Our hands began to shrink, then our bodies, as if somebody was trying
to hinder our efforts by making us younger, but we still had the same mental
capacity, and after the addition of a few booster seats, we were on our way
again. I have to say, it was quite strange, being a young male child.
All these visions of women in erotic situations were flying through my mind. It
was hard to keep my mind on the task at hand. It was then that I realized that I
was going through male adolescent puberty. I have to say, I did ask to use a
rest room more than once, so that I could relieve myself of some of the urges,
but that's not important (Use your imagination). While I was tracing through the
Fiction Mania server logs, I made a breakthrough.
I found a previously over looked inbound telnet from an almost untraceable IP
Address. It seemed as if they were using some form of IP Masquerading (It's a
way to tell one computer that you are coming from somewhere that you are not).
That gave me the scent. I knew I as dealing with someone intelligent, as they
had to be using some Unix derivative operating system, since win**** isn't
capable of such efforts. I told my colleagues of my discovery and we decided t
start covering our tracks with the same type of techniques. The next thing you
know we were on a roll (although with small fingers, typing was slow).
It seemed that someone was monitoring what we were doing and was covering there
tracks respectively. As soon as we started covering our tracks, allot of
information started to flow in. It seemed as if they were originating somewhere
on the west coast. And they were on a very large connection. From the packets
that we were able to intercept, it seemed as if they were using something
upwards of an OC12 (an OC12 Stream is capable of transferring 650MB of data
[approximately 1 CD] anywhere in just 1 second). This meant that there had to be
some record somewhere. Large equipment purchases, Fiber links, or something.
There were only a few providers on the west coast that were capable of serving
that size connection, and I started my hunt. While searching around, I decided
to start using some of my old resources at an ISP I used to work at. VERIO, was
one of the newest LARGE Capacity Nation wide networks serving the West coast
region. While there I found out that the west cast was only a hop, and that more
than likely it was originating from somewhere inside the VERIO East Coast
network, and seemed to be coming from their NOC! (NOC=Network Operations Center)
This threw me for a loop. Why would someone in that position be doing this, I
decided to try my old database passwords, and got it... But all that got me was
into the user database system. I needed to get into the engineering department,
the heart of the NOC.
I decided to call in a favor, and asked my old buddy John. John was a real good
friend to me while working at VERIO, and while he was quite skeptical about what
I was telling him, and really didn't want to open such a big security breach, he
finally let got the needed moves, and maneuvers that I needed to know to breach
the NOC Firewall. This was only after he thought about the fact that 95% of the
tech crew called in on emergency leave and said they would be out indefinitely.
He knew something was going on, although, I don't think he really believed my
explanation.
After what seemed like days of searching, and filing through the systems (but
had only been a matter of 4-5 hours), we were in the VERIO NOC. It seemed that
14 Workstations were sending some type of hypnotic suggestions encapsulated in
TCP packets. With that, we took this information to the woman from the council,
who used that information, to figure out that it was all being done by one of
their old ex council members, who was expelled from the council for abuse of
power. It seemed as if he was in the habit of altering fates just to cause a
little havoc in peoples lives, and that was not allowed.
The only problem was that when they expelled him from the council, his will was
too strong and they were unable to strip him of his powers. With that in mind, I
suggested a plan. I told the woman to gather the council in this room, and
together with my colleagues, I would have everything worked out in a bout 30
minutes. With that, she exited through the same portal, and we began to work on
my plan.
When she returned later, with 11 others, (5 Female, 6 Male) we told them our
Idea and how we planned to do it. What I suggested was that we use the same
basic method, and encode their combined powers into our own TCP packets to the
NOC PEOPLESOFT support system. This system was a large, 4x6 Foot monitor,
mounted in the wall, which was a complete call tracking system. With my
experience of using Peoplesoft at our local office, and my new breach in their
security, we figured that we could fake several messages to appear and start
transmitting the packets, this would defiantly peak his curiosity and he would
look, if only to investigate. We would then hopefully have him. The council
agreed.
Next we had to decide what to send as our hypnotic message, as our hold on him
would more than likely only last about 5 minutes at most. What we decided on was
to have him reverse his magic, and then transport him to a similar room (we
later learned that we were in a empty pocket in the lining of time basically)
where he would not be able to escape without the help of the council.
The only problem was channeling the power through the system. We decided on a
small voice actuated chat program that would be able to encrypt the voice and
chants onto the TCP stream itself. While the encryption and coding of the stream
itself only took about 20 minutes, it took about 2 1/2 hours to prepare the
message to be sent....
It was time to send. We started our countdown at T -10, then 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4,
3, 2, 1, we sent the packet, all of us coding along side it to ensure the breach
stayed open, and that transfer was successful. It took about 5 minuets before
the council noted what happened.
While it did work for us, and we re-aged, and returned to mainstream society in
the same genders we left in, it did not seem to affect all of the others. We
figured that most of this was due to a will to remain in their states, and for
others, well you'll have to ask them about their own experiences.
