An alternate ending after "The Difficult Choice" by Heather St. Claire
Tim turned off the computer.
It took everything he had to resist but getting the perfect life
at the expense of another was just plain wrong. The Devil, Mindy
or whoever that was would have to find another soul to steal. He
wanted to enjoy both a body and a soul!
Suddenly his computer came back on line and Mindy (AKA the Devil)
appeared again, only she looked different. She was dressed in
white and a wondrous light shown around her like the Angels in
"Touched by an Angel."
"Congratulations, Tim! You passed our test! Only someone pure of
heart really may partake of our offer but we must make sure the
person we make the offer of a new life is worthy of such an
honor. If you had even hesitated, you would have never heard from
us again in your lifetime. But you truly care about others, even
a stranger's soul, and thus are one of the few to reach this
final version of our proposal."
"As I said before, we have to tell you truthfully what happens to
the soul of the one you will replace. Now that you have passed
the test of character, I can tell you the true answer. Sheila is
really a nice enough person. She has some flaws but some
positives as well. All that we told you about her life was true,
except that she lived a quite acceptable life, more than enough
to gain entrance to what most on Earth call heaven."
"Sheila is scheduled to pass on in a week in a car accident. A
drunk driver will be taken off the streets. The driver is a
famous musician and his incarceration will help change the
negative image of rock and roll and alcohol being synonymous.
Sheila will enter the gates of Eternity and the rest of her
existence will be pure bliss!"
"Several others will die in the accident and there is no reason
one less will make a difference in the end result I have just
told you. The man in question will still go to jail and serve as
an example to others."
"But we do have this opportunity and you have qualified for a new
life. Unlike the movie "Heaven Can Wait", we don't make mistakes.
There is no one in need of a new body who doesn't already have
one. Those with old or sick bodies have their own karma to
fulfill, but you do not. Your future is an open book. We, as I
said, don't make mistakes, but sometimes nature is permitted to.
The reasons for this are beyond a mortal's comprehension, but we
can correct nature's error and give you the body you were meant
to have if it is truly your desire."
"No strings are attached, all we need is your permission, and
Sheila will 'miraculously' survive the fate of the others in the
car struck by the drunk driver. You will take her place and she
will take her rightful place in eternity. What is your answer,
Tim?"
This time the ends justified the means. Tim's answer was
preordained.
