Sorting Out Part 3: Halloween 1971

I remember it was the following fall after my first time
"outside" dressed completely as a girl during 6th grade at
Halloween 1970. Now it was one year later, and I was12 years old
and in 7th grade. My older sister was now a senior in high school
and my younger sister was in 3rd grade. I had relegated dressing
up to just once or twice a month when no one was home. When my
older sister was working or doing something with her friends on a
Saturday and my parents had dragged my younger sister out for a
full day away, I was now old enough to stay home by myself and
not have to go visit relatives on a Saturday from morning until
late evening.
My dressing was now exclusively in my mom's and older sister's
more recent "hand-me-downs", like the Christmas outfit (green
velvet skirt and white ruffled blouse) I wore at Halloween in 6th
grade. I could dress and be very convincing in about 15 minutes
times. I always wore satin/lace panties, the off-white garter
belt, either tan or cream or white stockings, a full slip, or a
half-slip and camisole, and dresses/skirts/blouses that were
either mid teenager (14-16) or were my mom's stuff she no longer
wore. Some of her stuff was very nice and dressy, stuff for nice
parties or for church functions. I would get dressed quickly
after everyone left for the day, and then just spend the morning
watching TV or walking around the house practicing walking,
sitting, crossing my legs, smoothing my skirt/dress underneath me
as I sat down, admiring myself in the full length mirror in my
mom's room. Then after 3-4 hours, I would change and call some
friends and head out for the day. No one in my family knew
anything when they came back home, and none of my friends knew
that the first half of my day was spent in feminine illusion,
while the remainder was spent just being one of the guys.
At the September meeting of our church youth group, the
announcement was made that for October there would be a full
costume party, open to all the kids and friends they invited. My
buddies and I were talking with the girls we hung around with
about costumes, and after about a half dozen ideas were brought
up and turned down, one gal suggested that her older brother (one
of my friends) come as a girl. He had long brown hair, parted in
the middle probably 20+ inches down his back. We all laughed it
off and then she made a revelation to us all that she had many
times French-braided his hair, or used her curling iron and
steamrollers on it, and styled it like a girl dozens of times.
Before long, he was embarrassed, other gals were saying they
wanted to see him with his hair all styled, and in time we all
took up the challenge and agreed to all come dressed as girls.
I was around 5'3" or so and weighed in at a very thin 100+/- lbs.
I had virtually no body hair and was very fair skinned, blue
eyes, curly blonde hair parted down the middle that completely
covered my ears and went about an inch past my shirt collar - the
classic "shag" hair cut of 1971. I was not the one to suggest we
dress like this, but I knew this would be a major chance to leave
the house dressed up again, so I obviously went along with the
plan, but tried to look like I was hesitant in agreeing to this.
Later that week, I told my mom about the costume idea for us guys
and she (like the year before) said I could pick something from
the basement. I think she thought that the regular dressing up
around the house had stopped completely, that I had outgrown that
a year or so ago. So she treated it more like I didn't know where
stuff was or how to do this, so she came down to the basement
with me. After looking at several dresses, we came across a
powder blue polyester pleated skirt and a white long-sleeved
sheer blouse that was a body-suit (one of my sister's old
outfits). It had three buttons in the crotch to keep it tucked in
under the skirt. There were about six pairs of women's shoes in
the last garment bag. We picked a pair of white patent leather
pumps with a 1" heel. I looked through the top drawer of the
steamer trunk under the basement stairs at all the slips,
panties, camisoles, hose, garter belts, stockings, and bras
folded neatly around the top. I had continued dressing in these
1-2 times a month, so I knew them all and which ones I wanted to
wear, but I pretended not to care. I went with a pair of tan
pantyhose (because of the body suit crotch) and a pink half-slip
with a lace-trimmed hem. Mom went to the other side of the
basement and before I undressed I grabbed a pair of bright blue
satin panties and a white stretch-lace bra. I very quickly put on
the panties and the pantyhose, and then my mom walked over and
looked at me standing in blue panties and tan pantyhose over top
and said, "Just don't let your father get a look under your skirt
or you'll have some serious explaining to do".
Just then my older sister called down from the top of the stairs
(something about leaving with the car). I panicked big time. I
was dressed in blue panties and pantyhose over top and had just
stepped into the white heels. She left down the hallway and out
the front door, and I was relieved. I don't think she knew I'd
dressed up since maybe 4th or 5th grade when she used to play
with me. My mom went back to the other side of the basement and I
put on the stretch-lace bra, and rolled up some foam padding from
my mom's sewing basket and put these into the bra cups. I then
stepped into the pink half-slip and was getting the white body-
suit unsnapped so I could step into and pull it up over my
shoulders, when I heard my sister at the top of the stairs again
calling down to my mom about money for gas for the car. I froze
as I heard her coming down the stairs. I was nailed, with nowhere
to go. I held the blouse up in front of my chest, but the straps
were visible on my skinny shoulders.
When she saw me she looked surprised, then laughed, and then
looked at the bra and said something like, "Oh mother, are you
going to let him wear my bra with all my clothes?"
My mom walked over and looked at me in blue panties, tan
pantyhose, white heels, and pink slip holding the blouse, and
said, "Oh he's fine, it's just for Halloween, and all his others
friends are dressing as girls too." She then said, "You never
minded before when YOU used to dress him up in your clothes,
remember?" Well she and my mom laughed out loud.
My sister teased me quite a bit, saying, "Well, my little brother
is really a little young lady now and has to grow up sometime." I
felt really embarrassed standing there as she said, "Okay, so
come on, let's see you in your bra." I lowered my arms and her
eyes widened. She came right over and started adjusting the
straps over my arms and shoulders, and said, "You're wearing it
too high up on your chest and back". She slid the strap hooks
down a bit and said, "There, now it's at the right height and
your breasts will be in the right place, just like a real
girl's."
She asked me what I had inside the cups and I showed her the
rolled up foam pillow-fill from mom's sewing bag. I stepped into
the blouse with my sister standing right in front of me, and then
bent over to button the snaps in the crotch. Mom pulled the half-
slip back to my waist level and smoothed the lace hem over my
pantyhose clad legs. She then held open the blue skirt and I
stepped into it and my sister zipped me up in back and fastened
the clasp. It went to about 3" above my knee. My sister said I
looked really convincing from the shoulders on down.
The blouse was silky polyester with a ruffle on the collar that
continued halfway down the front. A matching ruffle was on the
ends of he long sleeves. My mom and sister both said everything
fit like it was made for me. Mom said my costume was all set, now
I just needed to do was my hair, maybe some make-up, and put on
some jewelry. We went upstairs and I wet my hair real well in the
sink. I soaked my hair, toweled it dried it, and we went to her
bedroom. My hair was longer than it had been in 6th grade. I had
been wearing bangs in front in my regular haircut and the sides
were well past my ears. My sister brushed out my wet hair (which
was around 7-8" or so all the way around) and tried to comb it
and part it...then she got the idea... she asked our mom if she
could set my hair in curlers. Wow!
Mom said, "Sue why not?" and I thought it would be fun, but
pretended to resist while she had to urge me on. So she got out
her rollers and set my hair. We went into my sister's bedroom and
I watched in the dresser mirror as she rolled section after
section, some with big curlers, some with smaller ones. She
brushed my bangs straight down on my forehead. I was intrigued by
the illusion (and the incredible silky feeling) of the ruffled
blouse and skirt, and the pantyhose on my legs. And with the bra
and padding pushing out, my thin arms and legs, I knew I probably
looked just like a girl from the neck down.
Once the rollers were all in, she opened her top drawer and put a
little blusher on my cheeks and then some of her pink lip-gloss.
She commented that with my fair features and thin face I didn't
need much make-up at all. My sister was now really into makeup. I
couldn't believe how far we were going with this and she then
said I needed eye make-up too. My mom did not use mascara, but my
sister did, so I let her brush up my lashes and put on just a
small bit of blue eye shadow (classic 1971 to go with the shiny
lip-gloss). The last touch was a few squirts of perfume sprayed
on my neck and wrists. I turned to the mirror and wow, who was
that I was looking at? My eyelashes were dark and the blue eye
shadow really changed my face, along with lip-gloss and blush.
I went my mom's bedroom and opened her jewelry box and chose gold
clip-on earrings, necklace, bracelet, a few rings, and her thin
gold band watch as well. My sister said I was not finished until
I wore nail polish to finish off the look of my hands. She got a
bottle of pink polish, which closely matched the lipstick I was
wearing, and painted my nails while I sat in my mom's bedroom
chair. Just before she did my nails, she pulled the big pink
vinyl hood of her hair dryer over my curlers and hooked up the
plastic hose that connects to the main plastic carrying case with
the dryer motor. I'd seen my mom and sister sit under the dryer
for years, and now here I was sitting there in a silky blouse, a
skirt lying across my thighs, wearing panties, pantyhose and
heels.
She painted my nails in no time and as I sat there under the
dryer, I looked at my hands with jewelry and the watch and
painted nails, I looked down past my chest to my legs and thought
maybe we had gotten a bit carried away with the costume. I knew I
would be dressed like this, in front of every one in the Jr. High
youth group later that night and I started to get very
apprehensive about going through with it.
About 20 minutes later the hair dryer was shut down and the hood
removed. My sister unrolled the curlers one by one and began
brushing my hair and spraying on some hairspray. When she was
done, I stood up and walked to her large dresser mirror and was
absolutely shocked at my appearance. There was nothing left of
the 7th grade guy. My hair was large curls everywhere on the
sides, with my part down the middle and straight bangs right to
my dark eyelashes. We placed a white plastic hair-band above my
bangs at the base of my part, while the rest of the curls came
across my ears and on my collar.
I walked to her full-length mirror on the closet and turned back
and forth to look at my outfit from different angles. This was
unbelievable seeing me in full-view. Curly hair, full make-up,
earrings, blouse, necklace, a skirt, my slim legs in pantyhose
and heels. Nothing was missing from the illusion. On the one hand
I felt a bit awkward, but on the other hand I was absolutely,
really enjoying being dressed so differently from my T-shirt,
jeans, and sneakers. The skirt and blouse and pantyhose and heels
felt really comfortable, but I was afraid to say so, because guys
shouldn't like wearing girls' clothes, right? It was fun
pretending to be someone different for a while. My sister went
off to do her errand in the car, and I went to the kitchen with
my mom and made a sandwich and some soup. Sitting there across
the table from her I felt really different, but we just talked
about the party and meeting my friends' in their girl costumes in
the parking lot at the hall around 6:00 PM.
Lots of trick-or-treaters came by between 5:00 and 6:00. After
answering the door over and over and giving out the candy I
started to realize that people had no idea I was a guy in
costume, because no one smiled, or laughed, or asked... they just
reached in their sacks and said thank you. My sister came back
around 5:45 with two of her friends and said she'd give me a ride
to the hall and drop me off. When her friends Sandy and Michelle
came into the living room and saw me standing there, their eyes
almost popped out and they smiled.
Sandy said, "Oh my, look at your brother, this is so
unbelievable."
Michelle blurted out, "So, is he wearing everything?"
My sister giggled a said a quick, "Yes," and then the three of
them just plain laughed, and I was starting to think that maybe
we did go too far with this costume.
It was chilly out that night so my mom gave me a heavy knitted
pink sweater that buttoned down the front and a small black
patent-leather purse with her lipstick and a brush in it. We left
and as I stepped outside onto the porch and down the walkway to
the car. I felt the cool breeze go up my pantyhose and as I
walked, and I had to admit that the swish-swish of the pantyhose
and the body-suit fitted tightly on my crotch, and the slip and
skirt on my thighs was a great feeling. I sat in the backseat
with Michelle and she told me to keep my knees together and hold
my skirt to keep it from sliding back on my thighs. She looked me
over and commented that with my hair and make-up, the skirt and
hose, and my nails and rings I really looked like a girl. She
kept saying to my sister, "If I didn't know, he could easily be
passed off as your younger sister."
When we got to the parking lot I could see my friends standing by
the basketball court windows of the gym in their costumes. My
sister and her friends dropped me off and drove away. I walked
over to see the other guys... my skirt was blowing in a stiff
wind, and unlike last year's balmy night, it was pretty chilly
this evening. I crossed my arms in front of my waist with my
purse to shield the wind and hold the skirt down from flying up
in the breeze. As I got closer, I felt very awkward as we checked
each other out. The other guys were also dressed as girls, but
basically looked very silly, as they were obviously guys with
just a few girls' things on. Their costumes were funny looking,
but mine looked too serious, too ordinary, like it wasn't even a
costume at all. I knew something was up by the way they all
checked me over from head to toe; it actually got a bit quiet. I
had my own hair curled and styled; I was wearing a pink sweater
with my padded chest, the powder blue pleated skirt, tan
pantyhose, and my white heels. Keith said, "Don't tell me you're
wearing perfume too?" It's almost like the laughing stopped once
they got a close look at me. I realized these guys were dressed
for a good laugh, but they made comments to me like, "so it that
a costume, or the new you?"
I can still remember looking them over. Kirk had on a pink
bathrobe, fuzzy slippers with a kerchief on his head. Not very
original and certainly not anything that looked real. Underneath
he had on shorts and a T-shirt, and no make-up. Steve had on a
dress to his ankles and a pair of sandals. He had some rolled up
socks on his chest in his undershirt and lipstick and also had a
kerchief. Jeff had a denim skirt with gym shorts underneath and a
pair of red boots. He wore a sweater, a black wig with two long
braids, and some lipstick. Keith had a flowered housecoat with
white sandals and a curly red-haired wig. None of the guys had on
hose, just their bare legs and socks. Richie was a twin with his
sister Diana, so he had on one of her dresses. It was a green
jumper with a white turtleneck sweater underneath and black
women's dress shoes with a small heel. He was the only other guy
besides me wearing pantyhose (he had on dark green tights). His
kept his own hair short so he had on a blonde wig, and some
lipstick. Ken had on a football cheerleader's uniform, but it was
just a team sweater and skirt with some pom-poms in each hand.
His hair was pulled into to pig tails and he had shorts on under
the blue and gold skirt. He had hairy legs showing and wore his
own sneakers.
I could see that Steve and Richie were the only two others that
had each stuffed their chest, but they were both way too big and
didn't look real at all. The guys got their costumes from thrift
store stuff and they wore shorts under their dress or robe. As we
looked around at each other they had hairy legs (Richie had on
dark green tights) and all of them looked really funny. But it
was obvious that my costume was not really all that funny
anymore. It looked too real. There was nothing goofy or silly, it
was basically a very complete and coordinated teenage girl's
outfit. I knew no one else was probably wearing a bra and a lacey
slip, or panties under pantyhose. And my hair didn't look goofy
like the wigs or Ken's two pigtails sticking straight up. It was
my own hair, rolled, styled, and hair sprayed with a hairband.
Richie and I were the only two wearing earrings, but I was the
only one with nail polish and a purse. Oh boy, was I getting some
interesting looks.
We headed over to the gym for the start of the party. We got
inside out of the cold and it was getting very filled up,
probably about 75-80 Jr. High kids and maybe 10-12 adult
chaperones. There was music playing and lots of food set up. The
volleyball court was set up, and there were pool tables, ping-
pong, and air hockey tables. The lights were very low and there
were jack-o-lanterns and spider webs all around, and several
black lights, and a strobe light going full tilt in the gym area.
We all tried to play it very cool as we walked in together and
got a bunch of hoots and laughs as we mingled around. I took off
the knit sweater (it was very warm inside with all those people)
and put it on a chair, and then headed over to talk with some
people near the drinks. As I approached the table and about 6-7
girls we all knew, once again I got some surprised looks and
comments like, "Hey, maybe you got a little too much into this
costume tonight, huh?" or "pardon me, but have we been
introduced?" That's when Shelley started calling me Denise, and
off course everyone did the rest of the night.
I was getting some punch when one of the chaperones - Barbara -
came up behind me and in front of everyone pulled back and
snapped the bra strap across my back through my blouse and said,
"Nice costume, and really cute bra." I wanted to melt on the
spot. Everyone laughed and she grabbed me by the shoulders and
quickly turned me around for the others to see, and I realized
the white blouse was very sheer and showed a complete view of the
bra straps on my back and shoulders.
I guess I hadn't really thought about it or noticed this in the
front when I was home and looked at myself in the mirror. I got
several teasing comments about the bra showing, and Kirk's mom,
(a chaperone), held my shoulders and jokingly said, "Next time,
you should wear a full-slip and your bra won't show through." I
was really embarrassed and got very self-conscious about making
sure not to reveal what I was wearing under the skirt.
Well almost right at that moment - it happened very quickly,
Sharon grabbed a corner of my skirt and flicked it up really
quickly and said something like, "Careful something else doesn't
show." Well I think she meant that purely as a joke thinking I
must have shorts on underneath. But of course as she did this
everyone got a quick peak at the pink lace slip and the thigh
tops of the pantyhose and everyone's eyes got real wide real
fast.
Barbara (who snapped my bra) looked stunned and said something
like, "Oh my gosh, so what else have you got on underneath?" I
held the skirt down against me with my hands and just froze...I
didn't know what to say.
That's when Jill said, "You're not wearing panties too, are you?"
I said something like, "no way" and tried to change the subject
as I headed for the gym. I was trying to think how I could change
really fast, but I didn't bring other clothes, and couldn't take
the panties off and wear just the hose. All I could think was
borrowing some pants or shorts from one of the other guys.
I went into the gym and played some volleyball under the strobe
light, which was very fun. Then I played some ping-pong with some
friends for a while, and got some food, but kept getting lots of
comments and remarks about how real my costume was, and a bunch
of people were now calling me Denise all the time... But within
20 minutes the rumor mill seemed to spread around that I was
wearing a slip under my skirt (even though no one had seen the
blue panties under my hose and the body-suit). I was trying to
ignore people's looks and teasing, but it got worse. Even Joann
came up and asked me if I was "wearing everything." My friend
Richie (Diana's twin) was also getting teased in his green jumper
and tights, but he responded by heading to the men's room after
about half an hour, where he took off the jumper and tights and
put on his own jeans for the rest of the night. He still wore the
white turtleneck and black heels, but he had on his own
underwear, and he had nothing on under the turtleneck.
Richie getting attention covered some time for me to get away
from the main teasing, but after he changed we went to bob for
apples in the main hall under the black lights and cobwebs. I
felt like at this point maybe people had moved on to other things
than my costume. I didn't want to kneel down on the floor in
front of one of the tubs of water (too wet). So I stood and
watched. But I did agree to pin the guitar on the rock star
poster (like pin the tail on the donkey). So when my turn came, I
took the pin-guitar cutout in hand and was blindfolded. The music
was playing and I hammed it up a bit dancing and shaking my hips
a bit, we were all laughing. But after spinning me around I was
headed toward the poster when my friend Steve pulled up the
entire back of my skirt and exposed the pink slip and my backside
for all to see the fitted body-suit over top of the panties and
panty-hose. I guess some of the edges of the blue satin panties
might have showed through the pantyhose too. I pulled the blind-
fold off and guys were whistling, and everyone was either
laughing or in shock and saying, "Oh my, did you see that, he's
wearing panties". I kept saying, "it's no big deal, it's just a
costume", but now I was really torn. On the one hand I liked
wearing the outfit, it was fun, and I loved it. But on the other
hand I wanted to get out of it and back in my own clothes soon.
I was ready to call for a ride home, but my sister had my
parents' only car, so I lined up a ride with Keith's mom. My
other option was to walk home early, probably about 15 -20
blocks. The final teasing came when three of my "friends" grabbed
my arms when I was near the stairwell talking with Barbara and
they stuffed me into the ladies' bathroom. A few girls were doing
their make-up in the mirrors or brushing their hair, and I could
see a few legs under the stalls. The guys held the door shut
tight, so once the girls stopped laughing, some teased some more
and said, "Come here, let's freshen up your make-up," or, "Can we
brush your pretty hair," and of course things like "Sexy legs and
cute bra straps," and "Don't forget to sit when you use the
stall," The guys would let one girl leave at a time, but I ended
up staying in there about half an hour. Girls came in and used
the stalls, the sinks and mirrors, and left, but I couldn't get
out. Finally around 9PM they opened the door and I was out. I
stayed for the rest of the party until around 11:30 PM with just
some minor teasing.
When Keith's mom picked him and his sister up, we thought it
would be fun to not tell her who I was. When she pulled up, we
went to the driver's window and Kim said, "Mom, this is my friend
Denise, can you drop her off near the skating rink?" She said
okay and Kim got in front and Keith and I got in back. I think I
answered one or two questions with a kind of softened voice. Five
minutes later, she dropped me across from the bottom of my street
corner and I walked home.
I came in the front door and the house was dark, with just the
kitchen light on in back. It was just before midnight and my
parents and my sisters were already asleep. I sat in the kitchen
and had some iced tea and a few cookies. If anyone had been
watching me they would have thought I was losing it, because I
sat sideways at the table with my legs crossed, and I remember
holding the cookies intentionally in a very feminine manner with
my pinky finger up in the air. I went down to the basement, got
undressed, put the stuff back in the garment bags and trunk, and
went up to bed. But I laid awake for at least another half hour
and couldn't stop thinking about how easy it was to play the
female role and get away with it. I knew there'd be no other
chances of going out again for quite some time, maybe next
Halloween, but I did look forward to the next time I could dress
up at home when everyone was out.
