The little boy stood by his mother's bedside. The mother
didn't look well at all, and if you knew anything about
reading medical charts, it was clear she was not long for
this world. The child looked worried, but wasn't scared.
He didn't understand such things as death or dying yet. He
was too young. Being raised as a good Christian though, he
knew about heaven and hell, mostly heaven. And he some how
felt that his mother was going there.
"Momma, are you going to heaven?" the little boy asked,
holding a brown teddy bear. The mother looked startled.
But then she smiled, a ray of sunshine in the middle of
dark clouds.
"Yes, Charlie, mommy's going to heaven. God is waiting for
me," she said as soothingly as she could manage. It came
out as a whisper.
"Who is God?" asked the young boy, no sense of fear or
worry crossing his youthful face.
"God," the mother said, then coughed. Then quieter, "God
is many things, Charlie. He gives us life, and when our
time has come, he takes it away and brings us up to
heaven."
"When is it our time, momma," the little boy asked.
"Only God knows that. But my time is near," she said,
becoming quieter with every word. She strained to smile,
and even managed to reach out and hold the young boy's
hand comfortingly.
"When will you be back, momma," the boy asked.
"I love you Charlie, I will always love you," she said,
becoming quieter and quieter, until the last words were
barely even audible. Her eyes closed, and her grip on the
young boy's small hand loosened. Charlie squeezed it
harder.
"Momma? Momma? Speak to me momma," the young boy said.
He stood there for a few minutes waiting for his mother to
respond. When she didn't, the boy backed away slowly, eyes
on his mother. He finally made it to the door. Only there
did he turn around, as he opened the door into the next
room. In the next room, there were several people. A nurse
was standing by the door leading into the room where his
mother lies. There was a man, the boy's father, crying in
a chair in the corner with two adults facing him, talking
to him. Finally there was another little boy, Robbie,
Charlie's best friend. It was Robbie's parents who were
talking to the boy's father. When the young boy entered
the room, all faces turned toward him. Poor Charlie could
only think of one thing to say.
"Momma's gone to heaven."

"Hey, Chuck! Chuck! Charlie," called out a young man, well
dressed, as if prepared for or returning from some special
occasion.
He approached another young man who was casually dressed,
having gone nowhere, and anticipating no need to go
anywhere, that there might be required formal attire. He
turned in the hallway.
"Hey, Rob. What's up," Chuck asked his longtime friend.
"Oh nothing," he said as Chuck opened the door to his
apartment and walked in. Rob followed him. "Nothing much.
I, uh, missed you at my dad's funeral."
"Ah, Rob," Chuck said, spinning around to face his friend,
"you know how I feel about churches and everything."
"Yeah, yeah, but that was when you were six. Grow up
already. Your father and my mother are both angry with
you."
"You just don't understand. None of you do," Chuck said,
turning away, walking up to the room's window.
"Try me," Rob said sitting down in a chair. Chuck didn't
move.
"You know my mother died holding my hand. Right in front
of me," he said emotionally, beginning to pace. "You don't
know how painful my education in the realities of death
was. At the time, I had no idea, none at all, about what
death about. And it was never the same from there. Church
was never the same, and eventually I stopped going."
"Did you ever stop believing?"
"Parts of me did right away, but it took years for it to
truly sink in. 'Who is God?' I asked my mother. God is no
one," the passion in his voice escalating. "Miracles don't
happen, not real ones. I don't, no I can't believe
anymore. I'm not sure why you still do. After all...
"Let's not go there again. My preferences are the way they
are. I am another way, and that is God's will. I accept
that. There is probably some reason behind it.
"And what reason is there behind cancer, like the cancer
that killed mom? What kind of being, what kind of creature
could consciously do that to a person? Especially to my
mom. She didn't deserve it. Not at all. I was never the
same after that," Chuck said finally, resignedly.
"Neither was your father. But he kept his faith. It hurts
him a lot to see that you've lost faith. And your mother,
your mother was as firm a believer in God as anyone. What
would she think of you?"
"Now that," Chuck said, spinning around, waving his finger
at his friend, "that is a low blow. And anyway, if my
mother was alive today, I wouldn't have this problem,
would I?"
"Sometimes, Chuck, you just gotta have faith," Rob said
standing up and getting ready to leave.
"Like your faith in the idea that someday God will come
down and make you a woman, and then you won't have to play
your dress up games."
"Speaking of low blows," Rob said sarcastically, "and yes,
I have faith in that. I'm a good Christian, and I believe
that if God is able to fit it into His plans for mankind,
he will do it. I have faith in that. You should try a
little faith. It'll take you a long way, Chuck. And see
you around," Rob said, leaving through the door and
closing it behind him.
"Yeah, see ya," Chuck said staring out the window again,
mulling over his mother. He was not the little boy he had
been at her bedside all those years ago.

The alarm woke Chuck up with alarming suddenness. He also
heard the bell to his apartment being rung. Groggily,
Chuck got up, walked out of the bedroom, over to the door
to the apartment, and after unlocking it, opened it. He
wearily eyed his friend Rob standing there.
"Jesus--," Rob muttered walking in, closing the door
behind him.
"Yes, a stunning sight I make in the morning, isn't it?
And..." Chuck stopped suddenly realizing all was not
right. As he slowly awoke, his senses were giving him all
the wrong signals.
"Chuck, Chuck, is that you. If it is, you're a... you're
a... you're a..." Rob stuttered, falling backward to the
nearest chair to sit down. He didn't need to finish his
sentence. Chuck did.
"I'm a girl," he said, then promptly fainted. When he
awoke, Rob was standing over him, looking scared, nervous,
and confused all at once.
"What's happened to me," Chuck screamed, jumping up after
realizing what he had just said.
He tore off his clothes and saw beneath a pristine example
of feminine beauty. Chuck was hysterical for several
minutes, despite Rob's best efforts to calm him down.
Finally they were seated at the small kitchen table.
"I don't believe it," Rob said, Chuck in stunned silence.
"I, I had a dream, where this happened to you, just last
night. And a voice that told me to be here. And well..."
Rob said, trailing off at the end.
He just looked at his folded hands on the table. Chuck got
up, and Rob watched him, and went into the bedroom. He
came back with a purse, which he promptly, like a robot,
emptied onto the table. The name on the driver's license
was Christine Talbot, and showed a picture of a young
woman. Rob could easily tell that the woman in the picture
was Chuck.
"Why," Chuck asked, still stunned. "I mean, you are the
one who wanted this. I didn't. I... I mean... Was it God?"
Chuck asked, slowly.
Rob nodded. There was a long silence spent mostly watching
the sunrise through the window.
"I think," Rob said slowly, speaking in the same manner he
always used when he was about to say a lot. "I think, I
believe that God did this to you, to prove His existence
to you, to give you back your faith. To give back
something your mother's death had taken away. A
repayment," Rob said, becoming somewhat unsure.
"But," Chuck interjected, "you wanted this. Why didn't God
do this for you? It is, after all your dream, your wish,
your prayer."
"Maybe," Rob postulated, "maybe He was giving hope to me,
or perhaps asking me not to lose faith, but telling me at
the same time that my dream may not come true."
Rob looked downcast. Chuck was still shocked. They sat
together as the sun rose more and more into the sky. Chuck
reached over to his old friend.
"Rob, don't worry, I'm sure your dreams will come true."
