I used to love my wife. Lately, however, my love has
dissipated with every nagging and abusive word. If it were
not for the fact that I am much larger than my wife I am
sure that I would be physically mistreated too. But the
verbal abuse, her financial recklessness, and her
reluctance to uphold her side of the marital agreement
(sex, cooking, housekeeping, etc.) has made me realize that
our marriage is at an end.
Alas, what to do? If I divorced her I would forfeit the
house, the car, and most of my income. She would be living
like a queen and I'd have to continue working like a slave
to pay for her lavish lifestyle. Effectively, she would be
rewarded for mistreating me and ruining me and our
marriage.
Killing her would solve the problem, but it would
potentially create many more problems. Getting caught, for
example. But aside from that, I'm just not the killer type.
There had to be another answer.
That's how I came to be enjoying the sight of Lisa sipping
her coffee late on a Sunday morning. She noticed me
grinning at her and asked, "What are you so happy about?"
"Freedom!" I admitted. "Freedom from you and this
oppressive marriage."
"What the devil are you talking about?" she wanted to know.
"And by the way, this coffee you made has a strange
aftertaste today. Can't you learn to make a decent pot of
coffee?"
"The coffee is just the way I intended it, my dear. It
includes a special ingredient I bought from a strange
little man in a store at the mall yesterday. He promised
that it would cure what ails me."
"Are you trying to poison me? You'd never get away with
it!"
"It's not poisonous, it's magical. It grants me one wish to
change someone for the better. You are to be the lucky
recipient of my wish!"
"And what is your wish? Are you wishing I had bigger
breasts? Are you wishing that I would come running every
time you get horny? Or are you simply wishing that I would
cook and clean and be the submissive, perfect Stepford
Wife?"
I smiled. "Those would be wonderful wishes, but they all
have the same flaw. No matter how I wished to enhance your
womanly and wifely attributes, you would still be married
to me. No. I want out."
"So you're wishing I was married to someone else?" she
asked.
"No, I wouldn't wish you on anybody. I just couldn't bring
myself to be so cruel to a stranger. Besides, this wish is
for the betterment of another person, and wishing you on
somebody else would be very detrimental for him."
"Oh!" she said. "Something's happening to me. I feel very
strange. Just what did you wish for, you weasel? Just how
are you changing me for the better?"
"Simple," I admitted. "I wished for you to become a man."
"WHAT? You idiot! How is that going to make me better?" she
asked. Her voice cracked slightly as she said that.
I paused a few seconds, fascinated by the view of her body
bulking up, gaining mass (from where?), and beginning to
show muscles where none were before. Her jaw line squared
up a little, her Adam's apple became visible, and her
hairline receded a fraction of an inch while the length of
her hair somehow became much shorter. Her breasts
diminished at the same time her chest expanded, resulting
in almost the same measurement without the prominent
bulges. Her hips slimmed down and her waist filled out a
little, giving her torso a more masculine appearance. Gone
was any hint of a shapely feminine figure.
While she (he!) groped his freshly reconfigured crotch, a
stunned expression on his face, I explained, "You will
become a better person because you will have to learn
responsibility. Your parasitic existence is over. You will
have to get a job and earn a living because you will no
longer be able to sponge off some poor sap like me. As a
man you will be held accountable for your actions. Running
credit cards to their max and leaving the debt to your
husband won't work any more; you'll have to pay up yourself
or suffer the consequences."
"But this is horrible," he whined. "My clothes won't fit!
Where will I live? What will I do? I don't know how to be a
man!"
"Don't worry, everything will be adjusted. The magic will
alter reality so you were always male. You were born that
way and grew up that way. Everybody you ever knew will know
and remember you as a male. All your photographs and
records will reflect a lifetime as a male. Even your
clothes and personal items will change to fit your male
body. When the magic finishes its work you will discover
that you have an identity and a job. Unless, of course,
your pathetic leech-like habits carry over into this life -
then you'll find yourself jobless and probably homeless." I
smiled at that thought. "The beauty of it is that since you
were 'always' a male - and only you, me, and the strange
little guy at the mall will ever know any differently - we
never met and got married. When the dust settles, I don't
know where you will be or where I'll be, but I'll be rid of
you!"
Lisa stood up and leaned over the table. He said, "I'll get
even with you, you twerp! Before the magic finishes turning
my world upside down I am going to beat you to a pulp! And
I can do it now."
"Yes you can," I conceded, edging my chair back from the
table. "But are you ready to face assault and battery
charges? As a woman you could hit, slap, and kick me with
virtual impunity. But as a man you could get thrown in jail
for hitting someone. Not to mention that I'd sue the pants
off you before the bruises lost their color. Whatever
material wealth and possessions you may have in your new
life would quickly become mine." Lucky for me, he paused
long enough to consider this new dilemma.
Lisa sat down again and put his face in his hands. I could
see that he was trying very hard not to cry. I decided to
leave him in the dining room and go check out the rest of
the house. If the little man at the mall was right, I
should see Lisa's stuff start disappearing from the house
or morphing into equivalent male items. This would be very
interesting.
I started in the bathroom. Lisa had seemingly hundreds of
bottles and tubes of various potions, shampoos, gels,
conditioners, skin creams, depilatories, deodorants, and
heaven only knew what else. Then there are all the clips,
rollers, bath aids, disposable razors, feminine hygiene
products, hair dryers, and other things. I expected to see
this stuff vanish, but it didn't happen.
In the bedroom it was the same story. Lisa had so many sets
of panties, slips, bras, stockings, nightshirts, and other
frilly garments that the dresser drawers couldn't close.
Her jewelry was everywhere, spilling off the furniture. The
closets were stuffed with her dresses, skirts, blouses,
pants, shorts, and other costumes and accessories too
numerous to mention. Shoes were everywhere. There was so
much clutter that it was difficult to walk through the room
without tripping over something. I called it Lisa's
obstacle course and I dreamed of seeing it gone. It didn't
happen.
How long does it take this magic to work?
Suddenly I felt a cramp in my gut. I clenched up and fell
across the bed. Slowly the cramp eased up, but my skin felt
like it was crawling around on its own volition.
"Whoa, what's going on here?" a man's voice said from the
doorway. I saw Lisa standing there looking at me. "Looks
like you got caught in your own magical reality
modification. Oh, you're going to be a real cutie!"
I glanced at the full-length mirror on the closet door. My
hair was already shoulder length, my hips were wider and my
waist thinner. My arms and chest had lost considerable mass
(where did it go?), and breasts were beginning to appear. I
let my bathrobe fall open and watched the changes happen. I
panicked and grabbed my crotch when my favorite organs
began to vanish. It didn't help, and I was left cupping a
very feminine set of genitals.
"What happened?" I yelled. "What went wrong?"
"I'd say things went right, for a change. There is justice
in the world after all." Lisa grinned at me. "You wished
for reality to be modified to reflect my lifetime as a
male. Since I am married to you, and in this state men
cannot marry men, then you had to become a woman. We're
still married, but now I am the husband and you're the
wife!"
"Nooooo! That's now how it was supposed to be! We were
supposed to never have been married." I'm going to have
words with that little man at the mall.
"Well, if I have been made better than I was, I'd say you
are also better than you were. You got a two-for-one
bargain!" Lisa was enjoying this far too much.
Who knew there was a Conservation of Reality law governing
magic? Magic, like other natural forces, always takes the
path of least resistance. Changing Lisa to a man required
major adjustments to reality going back twenty-seven years
to her conception. A lifetime is cumulative. All the weight
of her lifetime's accumulation of records, photographs,
friends, experiences, and personal possessions had to be
balanced somehow. Evidently the easiest way to do this was
to swap her life for mine. No, I did not become Lisa nor
did she become me. The magic simply altered our lives in
opposite but equivalent ways, just as other forces have an
"equal-but-opposite" effect.
Balance.
Lisa's stuff in the bathroom didn't disappear because it
became MY stuff. Likewise, all the clutter in the bedroom
turned out to fit me perfectly. Somehow I knew that the
mass I lost equaled the mass Lisa gained, even though the
transformations did not happen at the same time. This meant
the magic did not have to change our clothing. Least
resistance.
We both remembered our previous lives, but discovered that
we now had memories of our new lives too. I can now
identify all that clutter in the bathroom and bedroom, I
know how to apply makeup, I can balance on heels, and I can
even operate zippers, hooks, and clasps positioned in the
middle of my back. I came to realize that my name is now
Sarah and became comfortable with it. Lisa became David and
adopted all the standard masculine habits and mannerisms,
including griping about the mess in the bathroom and
bedroom. Men!
Life settled down. After living with David a few days I
decided I no longer wanted a divorce. In fact, to reduce
HIS desire for a divorce, I have begun to clean up the
house a little bit and I'm rapidly becoming a passable
cook. Our roles in bed have reversed, of course, but we
both discovered that we really like sex from the new
perspective. We've even talked about me going off the pill.
I never did get back to the old man in the mall. Maybe
someday I'll look him up so I can ask a few questions about
the nature of magic. Whenever I reminisce about our
experience with reality-altering magic I have to wonder
about the consequences. Just how real is reality?
Everybody's life affects so many others in a myriad of
ways; can it really be possible to predict the eventual
results of even a modest wish? Chaos theory suggests that
the most trivial event such as the fluttering of a
butterfly's wing could eventually result in a hurricane
halfway around the world. Is chaos theory the major
principle behind magic?
The world you live in today may be drastically different
than the one you woke up in yesterday. You'd never know it
unless you were the magic wielder or the direct object of
the wielder's wish.
What, for example, would be the result if a wish like mine
had been made by a Hollywood celebrity? Suppose this person
had been married several times to different women, and each
of those women had been married two or more times to
different men, and so forth. The chain reaction from that
simple wish might affect half the population of the planet
before it played out!
I also wonder just how thorough magic is when it alters
reality. If you knew where to look could you detect
alterations in reality? Are there subtle traces of magic's
work left behind, like a scar on a lightning rod?
Have you ever felt like a woman trapped in a man's body? Do
you sometimes think you should have been born a woman
instead of a man (or vice-versa)?
Maybe you were.
And maybe you will be (will have been?) again!
